Abstract
There are abundant glycosylated substances such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and phytochemical glycosides in plants, which could be converted into functional chemicals such as monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, and bioactive aglycones by cleavage of glycosidic bonds using glycoside hydrolases (GHs). Among those GHs, β-glucosidase and β-xylosidase are the rate-limiting enzymes for degrading cellulose and hemicellulose, respectively, and can convert a variety of glycosylated substances. These two enzymes play important roles in the high value use of plant resources and have great potential applications. However, the fragility of enzymes suggests there is an urgent need to improve the activity, stability and reusability of GHs under industrial conditions. Enzyme immobilization is an efficient approach to meet the need. Inorganic materials are preferred carriers for enzyme immobilization, since they possess high surface area, pore size, stability and long service life. Recently, many reports have showed that GHs immobilized on inorganic materials exhibit potential applications on industry and will benefit the process economy. The present review provides an overview of these reports from the perspectives of materials, strategies, activities, stability and reusability, as well as an insight into the related mechanisms, with a view to providing a reference for the GHs immobilization and their applications.

Abstract
Herein, a novel multifunctional enzyme β-glucosidase/xylanase/feruloyl esterase (GXF) was constructed by fusion of β-glucosidase and bifunctional xylanase/feruloyl esterase. The activities of β-glucosidase, xylanase, feruloyl esterase and acetyl xylan esterase displayed by GXF were 67.18 %, 49.54 %, 38.92 % and 23.54 %, respectively, higher than that of the corresponding single functional enzymes. Moreover, the GXF performed better in enhancing aroma and quality of Longjing tea than the single functional enzymes and their mixtures. After treatment with GXF, the grassy and floral odors of tea infusion were significantly improved. Moreover, GXF treatment could improve concentrations of flavonoid aglycones of myricetin, kaempferol and quercetin by 68.1-, 81.42- and 77.39-fold, respectively. In addition, GXF could accelerate the release of reducing sugars, ferulic acid and xylo-oligosaccharides by 9.48-, 8.25- and 4.11-fold, respectively. This multifunctional enzyme may have potential applications in other fields such as food production and biomass degradation.

Abstract
Enzyme immobilization has emerged as a prodigious strategy in the enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) promising enhanced efficacy and stability of the enzymes. Further, enzyme immobilization on magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) facilitates the easy recovery and reuse of biocatalysts. This results in the development of a nanobiocatalytic system, that serves as an eco-friendly and inexpensive LCB deconstruction approach. This review provides an overview of nanomaterials used for immobilization with special emphasis on the nanomaterial-enzyme interactions and strategies of immobilization. After the succinct outline of the immobilization procedures and supporting materials, a comprehensive assessment of the catalysis enabled by nanomaterial-immobilized biocatalysts for the conversion and degradation of lignocellulosic biomasses is provided by gathering state-of-the-art examples. The challenges and future directions associated with this technique providing a potential solution in the present article. Insight on the recent advancements in the process of nanomaterial-based immobilization for the hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass has also been highlighted in the article.

Abstract
Tea is the second largest nonalcoholic beverage in the world due to its characteristic flavor and well-known functional properties in vitro and in vivo. Global tea production reaches 6.397 million tons in 2022 and continues to rise. Fresh tea leaves are mainly harvested in spring, whereas thousands of tons are discarded in summer and autumn. Herein, pruned tea biomass refers to abandon-plucked leaves being pruned in the non-plucking period, especially in summer and autumn. At present, no relevant concluding remarks have been made on this undervalued biomass. This review summarizes the seasonal differences of intrinsic metabolites and pays special attention to the most critical bioactive and flavor compounds, including polyphenols, theanine, and caffeine. Additionally, meaningful and profound methods to transform abandon-plucked fresh tea leaves into high-value products are reviewed. In summer and autumn, tea plants accumulate much more phenols than in spring, especially epigallocatechin gallate (galloyl catechin), anthocyanins (catechin derivatives), and proanthocyanidins (polymerized catechins). Vigorous carbon metabolism induced by high light intensity and temperature in summer and autumn also accumulates carbohydrates, such as soluble sugars and cellulose. The characteristics of abandon-plucked tea leaves make them not ideal raw materials for tea, but suitable for novel tea products like beverages and food ingredients using traditional or hybrid technologies such as enzymatic transformation, microbial fermentation, formula screening, and extraction, with the abundant polyphenols in summer and autumn tea serving as prominent flavor and bioactive contributors.

Abstract
High-value chemicals and energy-related products can be produced from biomass. Biorefinery technology offers a sustainable and cost-effective method for this high-value conversion. β-glucosidase is one of the key enzymes in biorefinery processes, catalyzing the production of glucose from aryl-glycosides and cello-oligosaccharides via the hydrolysis of β-glycosidic bonds. Although β-glucosidase plays a critical catalytic role in the utilization of cellulosic biomass, its efficacy is often limited by substrate or product inhibitions, low thermostability, and/or insufficient catalytic activity. To provide a detailed overview of β-glucosidases and their benefits in certain desired applications, we collected and summarized extensive information from literature and public databases, covering β-glucosidases in different glycosidase hydrolase families and biological kingdoms. These β-glucosidases show differences in amino acid sequence, which are translated into varying degrees of the molecular properties critical in enzymatic applications. This review describes studies on the diversity of β-glucosidases related to the classification, catalytic mechanisms, key molecular characteristics, kinetics models, and applications, and highlights several β-glucosidases displaying high stability, activity, and resistance to glucose inhibition suitable for desired biotechnological applications.

Abstract
Flavonoids and their glycosides are abundant in many plant-based foods. The (de)glycosylation of flavonoids by retaining glycoside hydrolases has recently attracted much interest in basic and applied research, including the possibility of altering the glycosylation pattern of flavonoids. Research in this area is driven by significant differences in physicochemical, organoleptic, and bioactive properties between flavonoid aglycones and their glycosylated counterparts. While many flavonoid glycosides are present in nature at low levels, some occur in substantial quantities, making them readily available low-cost glycosyl donors for transglycosylations. Retaining glycosidases can be used to synthesize natural and novel glycosides, which serve as standards for bioactivity experiments and analyses, using flavonoid glycosides as glycosyl donors. Engineered glycosidases also prove valuable for the synthesis of flavonoid glycosides using chemically synthesized activated glycosyl donors. This review outlines the bioactivities of flavonoids and their glycosides and highlights the applications of retaining glycosidases in the context of flavonoid glycosides, acting as substrates, products, or glycosyl donors in deglycosylation or transglycosylation reactions.

Abstract
Tailoring magnetic nanocarriers with tunable properties is of great significance for the development of multifunctional candidate materials in numerous fields. Herein, we report a one-pot biomimetic silicification-based method for the synthesis of silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles. The synthesis process was mild, low cost, and highly efficient, which took only about 21 min compared with 4.5-120 h in other literature. Then, the carriers had been characterized by VSM, SEM, TEM, XRD, FT-IR, and EDS to confirm their function. To evaluate the usefulness of the carriers, they were adopted to couple the purification and immobilization of β-1,3-xylanase from the cell lysate in a single step with high immobilization yield (92.8 %) and high activity recovery (82.4 %). The immobilized enzyme also retained 58.4 % of the initial activity after 10 cycles and displayed good storage properties, and improved thermal stability, which would be promising in algae biomass bioconversion as well as other diverse applications.

Abstract
Mulberry twigs are an important source of α-glucosidase inhibitors. To date, research studies on α-glucosidase in mulberry twigs have mainly focused on alkaloids such as 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ). Preliminary studies have shown that there may be more active nonalkaloid α-glucosidase inhibitors in mulberry twigs. In this study, we immobilized α-glucosidase on Fe3O4@SiO2 for the first time and rapidly screened four nonalkaloid α-glucosidase inhibitors (kuwanon G, kuwanon C, kuwanon H, and morusin) using ligand fishing technology with ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) from the mulberry twig extract of Jialing 20, the excellent artificial triploid variety of mulberry cultivated extensively in Southwest China. The half maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of kuwanon H and kuwanon G were 2.82 ± 0.68 and 2.83 ± 0.31 μM, respectively, with better inhibition activity than that of DNJ (with an IC50 of 7.04 ± 0.82 μM). Meanwhile, the molecular docking results showed that the action sites of these two isopentenyl flavonoids on α-glucosidase were different from that of DNJ. In brief, this work is beneficial to discovering new α-glucosidase inhibitors from mulberry twigs quickly and accurately and provides a theoretical basis for the mulberry twig extract as a functional food or a natural hypoglycemic drug source, as well as a reference for directional breeding of mulberry, which greatly improves the exploitation and utilization value of mulberry twigs as an agricultural byproduct in the fields of agricultural production, functional food, and natural medicine.

Epigenetics, including DNA methylation, histone modification, and noncoding RNA regulation, are physiological regulatory changes that affect gene expression without modifying the DNA sequence. Although epigenetic disorders are considered a sign of cell carcinogenesis and malignant events that affect tumor progression and drug resistance, in view of the reversible nature of epigenetic modifications, clinicians believe that associated mechanisms can be a key target for cancer prevention and treatment. In contrast, epidemiological and preclinical studies indicated that the epigenome is constantly reprogrammed by intake of natural organic compounds and the environment, suggesting the possibility of utilizing natural compounds to influence epigenetics in cancer therapy. Flavonoids, although not synthesized in the human body, can be consumed daily and are common in medicinal plants, vegetables, fruits, and tea. Recently, numerous reports provided evidence for the regulation of cancer epigenetics by flavonoids. Considering their origin in natural and food sources, few side effects, and remarkable biological activity, the epigenetic antitumor effects of flavonoids warrant further investigation. In this article, we summarized and analyzed the multi-dimensional epigenetic effects of all 6 subtypes of flavonoids (including flavonols, flavones, isoflavones, flavanones, flavanols, and anthocyanidin) in different cancer types. Additionally, our report also provides new insights and a promising direction for future research and development of flavonoids in tumor prevention and treatment via epigenetic modification, in order to realize their potential as cancer therapeutic agents.

Abstract
In this work, porous biochar was obtained from sugarcane bagasse by alkali activation and pyrolysis and then magnetized with γ-Fe2O3 by calcination. After functionalization with chitosan and activation with glutaraldehyde, the as-prepared chitosan/magnetic porous biochar served as a support to immobilize cellulase by covalent bonds. The immobilization amount of cellulase was 80.5 mg cellulase/g support at pH 5 and 25 °C for 12 h of immobilization. To determine the enzymatic properties, 1% carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (CMC) (dissolved in 0.1 M buffer) was considered as a substrate for hydrolysis at different pH values (3–7) and temperatures (30–70 °C) for 30 min. The results showed that the optimum pH and temperature of the free and immobilized cellulase did not change, which were pH 4 and 60 °C, respectively. The immobilized cellulase had a relatively high activity recovery of 73.0%. However, it also exhibited a higher Michaelis–Menten constant (Km) value and a slower maximum reaction velocity (Vmax) value compared to the free enzyme. In the reusability assay, the immobilized cellulase showed initial glucose productivity of 330.9 mg glucose/g CMC and remained at 86.0% after 10 uses. In conclusion, the chitosan/magnetic porous biochar has great potential applications as a support for enzyme immobilization.

Abstract
The aroma changes in instant white tea resulting from β-glucosidase treatment was investigated by quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), odour activity value analysis (OAV), aroma reconstruction and omission tests. The grassy, floral and sweet notes increased significantly (P < 0.05), and the roasted note decreased significantly (P < 0.05) upon β-glucosidase treatment. Quantitative analysis showed that the concentrations of benzaldehyde, benzeneacetaldehyde, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, linalool, phenylethyl alcohol, cis-linalool oxide, trans-linalool oxide, hexanol, hotrienol and (E)-2-hexen-1-ol increased significantly (P < 0.05) after treatment; however, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol isomerized to (E)-2-hexen-1-ol. OAV analysis, aroma reconstruction and the omission test showed that the grassy, floral and sweet notes increased as the (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, cis/trans-linalool oxide and benzeneacetaldehyde increased, whereas the roasted note declined under the same conditions. The enzymatic hydrolysis of glycosidic precursors and the auto-isomerization of volatile compounds provide new information for understanding how β-glucosidase treatment improves the aroma of tea products.
