From Laves Phases to Quasicrystal Approximants in the Na-Au-Cd System

The exploratory synthesis of gold-based polar intermetallic phases has revealed many new compounds with unprecedented crystal structures, unique bonding arrangements, and interesting electronic features. Here, we further understand the complexity of gold's crystal chemistry by studying the Na-Au-Cd ternary composition space. A nearly continuous structure transformation is observed between the seemingly simple binary NaAu₂-NaCd₂ phases, yielding three new intermetallic compounds with the compositions Na(Au_0.89(5)Cd_0.11(5))₂, Na(Au_0.51(4)Cd_0.49(4))₂, and Na₈Au_3.53(1)Cd_13.47(1). Two compounds adopt different Laves phases, while the third crystallizes in a complex decagonal quasicrystal approximant. All three compounds are related through Friauf-Laves polyhedral building units with the gold/cadmium ratio found to control the transition among the unique crystal structures. Electronic structure calculations subsequently revealed the metallic nature of all three compounds with a combination of polar covalent Na-(Au/Cd) interactions and covalent (Au/Cd)-(Au/Cd) bonding interactions stabilizing each structure. These results highlight the crystal and electronic structure relationship among Laves phases and quasicrystal approximants enabled by the unique chemistry of gold.

The Use of Synthesized CoO/Co3O4 Nanoparticles as A Corrosion Inhibitor of Low-Carbon Steel in 1 M HCl

CoO/Co₃O₄ nanoparticles (CoO/Co₃O₄ NPs) were synthesized with egg white. The effectiveness of CoO/Co₃O₄ NPs to inhibit the corrosion of carbon steel has verified in acidic medium (1 M HCl). It has been found that Langmuir adsorption isotherm is the dominant adsorption process of CoO/Co₃O₄ NPs on the surface of low-carbon steel. The thermodynamic parameters also demonstrated that the adsorption process of CoO/Co₃O₄ NPs was a physicochemical, spontaneous, and exothermic process. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique and potentiodynamic polarization were applied. The results obtained in this study showed that CoO/Co₃O₄ NPs acted as a mixed inhibitor for the anodic reaction and the cathodic reaction, and the efficiency to inhibit the corrosion was 93% at 80 ppm of the inhibitor. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray electron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the effectiveness that was obtained using the inhibitor to protect the surface of low carbon steel. Thus, low-carbon steel can be protected against corrosion in acidic medium using CoO/Co₃O₄ NPs as inhibitors.

Catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol and methylene blue pollutants in water by copper and nickel nanoparticles decorated polymer sponges

In the present study, two catalysts based-on copper and nickel nanoparticles anchored on agarose-coated sponge (Cu-AG-sponge and Ni-AG-sponge) were prepared, respectively. Both catalysts were characterized by analytical techniques of thermogravimetric analysis energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Spherical Cu and Ni nanoparticles on struts of AG-coated sponge were observed by FESEM and the samples' elemental composition was confirmed by EDX technique. After characterization, the Cu-AG-sponge and Ni-AG-sponge catalysts were tested in 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and methylene blue dye (MB) reduction in an aqueous medium. The reduction of the 4-NP to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) was achieved up to 95% using the NaBH₄ reductant and Cu-AG-sponge and Ni-AG-sponge catalysts, respectively. Similarly, the rate of reduction of MB was faster for the Cu-AG-sponge as compared to the Ni-AG-sponge which was discussed based-on the catalyst morphology and other factors. The high rate of reactions for the 4-NP and MB reduction suggests that the Cu-AG-sponge and Ni-AG-sponge catalyst possess high catalytic efficiency, low cost and good reusability having the potential to be used in similar other reactions.
