Enhancing the activity of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from CdSe quantum dots with a polyoxovanadate cluster

Concurrent Ammonia Synthesis and Alcohol Oxidation Boosted by Glutathione-Capped Quantum Dots under Visible Light

Mother nature accomplishes efficient ammonia synthesis via cascade N2 oxidation by lightning strikes followed with enzyme-catalyzed nitrogen oxyanion (NOx -, x = 2,3) reduction. The protein environment of enzymatic centers for NOx --to-NH4 + process greatly inspires the design of glutathione-capped (GSH) quantum dots (QDs) for ammonia synthesis under visible light (440 nm) in tandem with plasma-enabled N2 oxidation. Mechanistic studies reveal that GSH induces positive shift of surface charge to strengthen the interaction between NOx - and QDs. Upon visible light irradiation of QDs, the balanced and rapid hole and electron transfer furnish GS·radicals for 2e-/2H+ alcohol oxidation and H·for 8e-/10H+ NO3 --to-NH4 + reduction simultaneously. For the first time, mmol-scale ammonia synthesis is realized with apparent quantum yields of 5.45% ± 0.64%, and gram-scale synthesis of value-added acetophenone and NH4Cl proceeds with 1:4 stoichiometry and stability, demonstrating promising multielectron and multiproton ammonia synthesis efficiency and sustainability with nature-inspired artificial photocatalysts.

Water-soluble fullerenol-mediated electron transfer in molecular systems toward enhanced solar hydrogen production

We present here that visible-light-induced electron transfer from an excited dye to an in situ generated Pt cocatalyst can be promoted by employing water-soluble fullerenol (C60(OH)24) as an electron mediator, and as a result, the fullerenol-based molecular system shows a 3 times higher H2 evolution activity than C60(OH)24-free system.

Efficient Hole Transfer from CdSe Quantum Dots Enabled by Oxygen-Deficient Polyoxovanadate-Alkoxide Clusters

A limitation of the implementation of cadmium chalcogenide quantum dots (QDs) in charge transfer systems is the efficient removal of photogenerated holes. Rapid hole transfer has typically required the ex situ functionalization of hole acceptors with groups that can coordinate to the surface of the QD. In addition to being synthetically limiting, this strategy also necessitates a competitive binding equilibrium between the hole acceptor and native, solubilizing ligands on the nanocrystal. Here we show that the incorporation of oxygen vacancies into polyoxovanadate-alkoxide clusters improves hole transfer kinetics by promoting surface interactions between the metal oxide assembly and the QD. Investigating the reactivity of oxygen-deficient clusters with phosphonate-capped QDs reveals reversible complexation of the POV-alkoxide with a phosphonate ligand at the nanocrystal surface. These findings reveal a new method of facilitating QD-hole acceptor association that bypasses the restrictions of exchange interactions.

Effect of a redox-mediating ligand shell on photocatalysis by CdS quantum dots

Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are efficient organic photoredox catalysts due to their high extinction coefficients and easily tunable band edge potentials. Despite the majority of the surface being covered by ligands, our understanding of the effect of the ligand shell on organic photocatalysis is limited to steric effects. We hypothesize that we can increase the activity of QD photocatalysts by designing a ligand shell with targeted electronic properties, namely, redox-mediating ligands. Herein, we functionalize our QDs with hole-mediating ferrocene (Fc) derivative ligands and perform a reaction where the slow step is hole transfer from QD to substrate. Surprisingly, we find that a hole-shuttling Fc inhibits catalysis, but confers much greater stability to the catalyst by preventing a build-up of destructive holes. We also find that dynamically bound Fc ligands can promote catalysis by surface exchange and creation of a more permeable ligand shell. Finally, we find that trapping the electron on a ligand dramatically increases the rate of reaction. These results have major implications for understanding the rate-limiting processes for charge transfer from QDs and the role of the ligand shell in modulating it.

Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 respires CdSe quantum dots for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Living bio-nano systems for artificial photosynthesis are of growing interest. Typically, these systems use photoinduced charge transfer to provide electrons for microbial metabolic processes, yielding a biosynthetic solar fuel. Here, we demonstrate an entirely different approach to constructing a living bio-nano system, in which electrogenic bacteria respire semiconductor nanoparticles to support nanoparticle photocatalysis. Semiconductor nanocrystals are highly active and robust photocatalysts for hydrogen (H2) evolution, but their use is hindered by the oxidative side of the reaction. In this system, Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 provides electrons to a CdSe nanocrystalline photocatalyst, enabling visible light-driven H2 production. Unlike microbial electrolysis cells, this system requires no external potential. Illuminating this system at 530 nm yields continuous H2 generation for 168 h, which can be lengthened further by replenishing bacterial nutrients.

Multifunctional theranostic nanoplatform loaded with autophagy inhibitor for enhanced photothermal cancer therapy under mild near-infrared irradiation

Photothermal therapy (PTT) usually causes hyperthermia and damages healthy tissues. Developing a PTT platform with enhanced therapeutic effects and reduced side effects to normal tissues attracts increasing attention. Herein, we developed a multifunctional theranostic nanoplatform using poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) loaded with near-infrared (NIR) photothermal agent (new indocyanine green IR820), fluorescence imaging agent (ZnCdSe/ZnS quantum dots, QDs) and autophagy inhibitor (chloroquine, CQ). These PLGA/IR820/Fluorescence imaging agent/CQ co-loading nanoparticles (termed PIFC NPs) displayed photothermal effects, enhanced the stability of IR820 in vivo, and enabled QDs to have stable fluorescent signals in vitro and in vivo. The PIFC NPs with particle size around 240 nm aggregated to tumor sites through the high permeability and retention effects of solid tumors. The intracellular delivery of CQ molecules through PIFC NPs significantly attenuated the degradation of autophagic lysosomes in tumor cells and effectively inhibited the autophagy mediated repair of photothermal damaged cells. Under milder NIR irradiation conditions, PIFC NPs exhibited high antitumor effect. By regulating autophagy, PTT can be effectively sensitized, which will provide a new idea for future cancer treatment research.

Assessing the Environmental Effects Related to Quantum Dot Structure, Function, Synthesis and Exposure

Quantum dots (QDs) are engineered semiconductor nanocrystals with unique fluorescent, quantum confinement, and quantum yield properties, making them valuable in a range of commercial and consumer imaging, display, and lighting technologies. Production and usage of QDs are increasing, which increases the probability of these nanoparticles entering the environment at various phases of their life cycle. This review discusses the major types and applications of QDs, their potential environmental exposures, fates, and adverse effects on organisms. For most applications, release to the environment is mainly expected to occur during QD synthesis and end-product manufacturing since encapsulation of QDs in these devices prevents release during normal use or landfilling. In natural waters, the fate of QDs is controlled by water chemistry, light intensity, and the physicochemical properties of QDs. Research on the adverse effects of QDs primarily focuses on sublethal endpoints rather than acute toxicity, and the differences in toxicity between pristine and weathered nanoparticles are highlighted. A proposed oxidative stress adverse outcome pathway framework demonstrates the similarities among metallic and carbon-based QDs that induce reactive oxygen species formation leading to DNA damage, reduced growth, and impaired reproduction in several organisms. To accurately evaluate environmental risk, this review identifies critical data gaps in QD exposure and ecological effects, and provides recommendations for future research. Future QD regulation should emphasize exposure and sublethal effects of metal ions released as the nanoparticles weather under environmental conditions. To date, human exposure to QDs from the environment and resulting adverse effects has not been reported.

Organic building blocks at inorganic nanomaterial interfaces

This tutorial review presents our perspective on designing organic molecules for the functionalization of inorganic nanomaterial surfaces, through the model of an "anchor-functionality" paradigm. This "anchor-functionality" paradigm is a streamlined design strategy developed from a comprehensive range of materials (e.g., lead halide perovskites, II-VI semiconductors, III-V semiconductors, metal oxides, diamonds, carbon dots, silicon, etc.) and applications (e.g., light-emitting diodes, photovoltaics, lasers, photonic cavities, photocatalysis, fluorescence imaging, photo dynamic therapy, drug delivery, etc.). The structure of this organic interface modifier comprises two key components: anchor groups binding to inorganic surfaces and functional groups that optimize their performance in specific applications. To help readers better understand and utilize this approach, the roles of different anchor groups and different functional groups are discussed and explained through their interactions with inorganic materials and external environments.

Influence of Ligand Structure on Excited State Surface Chemistry of Lead Sulfide Quantum Dots

The ligand-nanocrystal boundaries of colloidal quantum dots (QDs) mediate the primary energy and electron transfer processes that underpin photochemical and photocatalytic transformations at their surfaces. We use mid-infrared transient absorption spectroscopy to reveal the influence that ligand structure and bonding to nanocrystal surfaces have on the changes of the excited state surface chemistry of this boundary in PbS QDs and the corresponding impact on charge transfer processes between nanocrystals. We demonstrate that oleate ligands undergo marked changes in their bonding to surfaces in the excitonic excited states of the nanocrystals, indicating that oleate passivated PbS surfaces undergo significant structural changes following photoexcitation. These changes can impact the surface mobility of the ligands and the ability of redox shuttles to approach the nanocrystal surfaces to undergo charge transfer in photocatalytic reactions. In contrast, markedly different transient vibrational features are observed in iodide/mercaptoproprionic acid passivated PbS QD films that result from charge transfer between neighboring nanocrystals and localization of holes at the nanocrystal surfaces near MPA ligands. This ability to distinguish the influence that excitonic excited states vs charge transfer processes have on the surface chemistry of the ligand-nanocrystal boundary lays the groundwork for exploration of how this boundary can be understood and controlled for the design of nanocrystalline materials tailored for specific applications in solar energy harvesting and photocatalytic reactions.

Molecular Vanadium Oxides for Energy Conversion and Energy Storage: Current Trends and Emerging Opportunities

Molecular vanadium oxides, or polyoxovanadates (POVs), have recently emerged as a new class of molecular energy conversion/storage materials, which combine diverse, chemically tunable redox behavior and reversible multielectron storage capabilities. This Review explores current challenges, major breakthroughs, and future opportunities in the use of POVs for energy conversion and storage. The reactivity, advantages, and limitations of POVs are explored, with a focus on their use in lithium and post-lithium-ion batteries, redox-flow batteries, and light-driven energy conversion. Finally, emerging themes and new research directions are critically assessed to provide inspiration for how this promising materials class can advance research in sustainable energy technologies.

Light-driven hydrogen production with CdSe quantum dots and a cobalt glutathione catalyst

A photocatalytic hydrogen (H₂) production system is reported using glutathione (GSH)-capped CdSe QDs with a cobalt precatalyst, yielding 130 000 mol H₂ per mol cobalt over 48 hours. Analysis of the reaction mixtures after catalysis indicates that the active catalyst is a labile complex of cobalt and GSH formed in situ.
