Performance of ionic liquid functionalized metal organic frameworks in the adsorption process of phenol derivatives

The growth of industrial activities has produced a significant increase in the release of toxic organic pollutants (OPs) to the environment from industrial wastewater. On this premise, this study reports the use of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) impregnated with various ionic liquids (ILs) in the adsorption of phenol derivatives, i.e., 2,6-dimethylphenol and 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl. MOFs were prepared starting from 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) with divalent (Co, Ni, Cu) and trivalent (Ce) metal salts in mild hydrothermal conditions using water as a green solvent. Imidazolium base ionic liquids, namely 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, and 1-hexyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride, were used to modify MOFs, leading to composite materials (IL@MOF), which show the structural characteristics of MOFs, and complement the advantages of ILs. SEM, EDX images, and TG data indicate that the IL is just attached on the surface of the adsorbent material, with no changes in crystal size or morphology, but with slightly altered thermal stabilities of IL@MOF composites compared to the original ILs and MOFs, pointing to some interionic interaction between IL and MOF. This research consists of equilibrium experiments, studying the effect of the initial concentration of OPs on the adsorption efficiency of the as-prepared MOFs and IL@MOF, in order to determine the influence of the nature of the adsorbent on its developed adsorption capacity and to investigate the performance of both ILs and MOFs. To determine the maximum adsorption capacity, several empirical isotherms were used: Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson, and Dubinin-Radushkevich. The characteristic parameters for each isotherm and the correlation coefficient (R2) were identified. The IL modification of MOFs increased the adsorption capacity of IL@MOF for the removal of phenol derivatives from aqueous solution. The adsorption capacity function of the MOF structure follows the trend CeHEDP > CoHEDP > NiHEDP > CuHEDP. The best performance was achieved by adsorbent materials based on Ce.

Facile Synthesis of Anhydrous Rare-Earth Trichlorides from their Oxides in Chloridoaluminate Ionic Liquids

Wide applications of anhydrous rare-earth (RE) trichlorides RECl3 in organometallic chemistry, for the synthesis of optical and magnetic materials, and as catalysts require a facile approach for their synthesis. The known methods use or produce toxic substances, are complicated and have limited reliability and upscaling. It has been shown that task-specific ionic liquids (ILs) can dissolve many metal oxides without special reaction conditions at moderate temperature, making the metals accessible to downstream chemistry. Using imidazolium chloridoaluminate ILs, pure crystalline anhydrous RECl3 (RE=La-Nd, Sm-Dy) can be synthesized in one step from RE oxides in high yield. The Lewis acidic IL acts as solvent and reaction partner. The by-product [Al4 O2 Cl10 ]2- , which was detected spectroscopically, remains in solution. The reacted IL can be removed quantitatively by washing. ILs with various imidazolium cations and AlCl3 content and the effect of temperature and reaction time were tested.

Proton transfer between sulfonic acids and various propylamines by density functional theory calculations

CONTEXT

Proton transfer in acid-base systems is not well understood. Some acid-base reactions do not proceed to the extent that is expected from the difference in the pK_a values between the base and acid in aqueous solutions, yet some do. In that regard, we have computationally studied the process of proton transfer from the acids of varying strength (benzenesulfonic acid (BSu), methansulfonic acid (MsO), and sulfuric acid (SA)) to the amines with different numbers of propyl substituents on the nitrogen atom (propylamine (PrA), dipropylamine (DPrA), and tripropylamine (TPrA)) upon complexation. Density functional theory calculations were used to thoroughly examine the energetic and structural aspects of the molecular complexes and/or ionic pairs resulting from the acid-base interaction. The potential energy curves along the proton transfer coordinate in these acid-amine systems were analyzed. The change in free energies accompanying the molecular complexes and ionic pair formations was calculated, and the relationship between the energy values and the ΔРА parameter (difference in proton affinity of the acid anion and amine) was established. The larger ΔРА values were found to be unfavorable for the formation of ionic pairs. Using structural, energy, QTAIM, and NBO analyses, we determined that the hydrogen bonds in the molecular complexes PrA-MsO and PrA-BSu are stronger than those in their corresponding ionic pairs. The ionic pairs with the TPrA cation possess the strongest hydrogen bonds of all the ionic pairs being studied, regardless of the anion. The results showed that hydrogen bonding interactions in the molecular complexes contribute significantly to the energies of the acid-base interaction, while in the ionic pairs, the most important energy contribution comes from Coulomb interactions, followed by hydrogen bonding and dispersion forces. The ionic pairs with propylammonium, dipropylammonium, and tripropylammonium cations have stronger ion-ion interactions than tetrapropylammonium (TetPrA)-containing ionic pairs with the same anions. This effect rises with the order of the cation: TetPrA → TPrA → DPrA → PrA, and the sequence of anions is SA → BSu → MsO. The results obtained here expand the concept of acid-base interaction and provide an alternative to experimental searches for suitable acids and bases to obtain new types of protic ionic liquids.

METHODS

All quantum-chemical calculations were carried out by using the DFT/B3LYP-GD3/6-31++G(d,p) level as implemented in the Gaussian 09 software package. For the resulting structures, the electron density distribution was analyzed by the "atoms in molecules" (QTAIM) and the natural bond orbital (NBO) methods on the wave functions obtained at the same level of theory by AIMAll Version 10.05.04 and Gaussian NBO Version 3.1 programs, respectively.

Screening of Ionic Liquids against Bamboo Mildew and Its Inhibition Mechanism

Ionic liquids are a class of organic molten salts that consist entirely of cations and anions. They are characterized by their low vapor pressure, low viscosity, low toxicity, high thermal stability, and strong antifungal potential. In this study, the inhibitory performance of ionic liquid cations against Penicillium citrinum, Trichoderma viride, and Aspergillus niger was investigated, along with the mechanism of cell membrane disruption. The Oxford cup method, SEM, and TEM were employed to examine the extent of damage and the specific site of action of ionic liquids on the mycelium and cell structure of these fungi. The results showed that 1-decyl-3-methylimidazole had a strong inhibitory effect on TV; benzyldimethyldodecylammonium chloride had a weak inhibitory effect on PC, TV, AN, and a mixed culture; while dodecylpyridinium chloride exhibited significant inhibitory effects on PC, TV, AN, and Mix, with more prominent effects observed on AN and Mix, exhibiting MIC values of 5.37 mg/mL, 5.05 mg/mL, 5.10 mg/mL, and 5.23 mg/mL, respectively. The mycelium of the mildews showed drying, partial loss, distortion, and uneven thickness. The cell structure showed separation of the plasma wall. The absorbance of the extracellular fluid of PC and TV reached the maximum after 30 min, while that of AN reached the maximum after 60 min. The pH of the extracellular fluid decreased initially and then increased within 60 min, followed by a continuous decrease. These findings provide important insights for the application of ionic liquid antifungal agents in bamboo, medicine, and food.

Nucleation, Coalescence, and Thin-Film Growth of Triflate-Based Ionic Liquids on ITO, Ag, and Au Surfaces

This study investigates the nucleation and growth of micro-/nanodroplets of triflate-based ionic liquids (ILs) fabricated by vapor deposition on different surfaces: indium tin oxide (ITO); silver (Ag); gold (Au). The ILs studied are constituted by the alkylimidazolium cation and the triflate anion—[CnC1im][OTF] series. One of the key issues that determine the potential applications of ILs is the wettability of surfaces. Herein, the wetting behavior was evaluated by changing the cation alkyl chain length (C2 to C10). A reproducible control of the deposition rate was conducted employing Knudsen cells, and the thin-film morphology was evaluated by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The study reported here for the [CnC1im][OTF] series agrees with recent data for the [CnC1im][NTf2] congeners, highlighting the higher wettability of the solid substrates to long-chain alkylimidazolium cations. Compared to [NTf2], the [OTF] series evidenced an even more pronounced wetting ability on Au and coalescence processes of droplets highly intense on ITO. Higher homogeneity and film cohesion were found for cationic groups associated with larger alkyl side chains. An island growth was observed on both Ag and ITO substrates independently of the cation alkyl chain length. The Ag surface promoted the formation of smaller-size droplets. A quantitative analysis of the number of microdroplets formed on Ag and ITO revealed a trend shift around [C6C1im][OTF], emphasizing the effect of the nanostructuration intensification due to the formation of nonpolar continuous domains.

Strong-field ionization of CH3Cl: proton migration and association

Strong-field ionization of CH₃Cl using femtosecond laser pulses, and the subsequent two-body dissociation of CH₃Cl²⁺ along H_n⁺ (n = 1-3) and HCl⁺ forming pathways, have been experimentally studied in a home-built COLTRIMS (cold target recoil ion momentum spectrometer) setup. The single ionization rate of CH₃Cl was obtained experimentally by varying the laser intensity from 1.6 × 10¹³ W cm^-2 to 2.4 × 10¹⁴ W cm^-2 and fitted with the rate obtained using the MO-ADK model. Additionally, the yield of H_n⁺ ions resulting from the dissociation of all charge states of CH₃Cl was determined as a function of intensity and pulse duration (and chirp). Next, we identified four two-body breakup pathways of CH₃Cl²⁺, which are H⁺ + CH₂Cl⁺, H₂⁺ + CHCl⁺, H₃⁺ + CCl⁺, and CH₂⁺ + HCl⁺, using photoion-photoion coincidence. The yields of the four pathways were found to decrease on increasing the intensity from I = 4.2 × 10¹³ W cm^-2 to 2I = 8.5 × 10¹³ W cm^-2, which was attributed to enhanced ionization of the dication before it can dissociate. As a function of pulse duration (and chirp), the H_n⁺ forming pathways were suppressed, while the HCl⁺ forming pathway was enhanced. To understand the excited state dynamics of the CH₃Cl dication, which controls the outcome of dissociation, we obtained the total kinetic energy release distributions of the pathways and the two-dimensional coincidence momentum images and angular distributions of the fragments. We inferred that the H_n⁺ forming pathways originate from the dissociation of CH₃Cl dications from weakly attractive metastable excited states having a long dissociation time, while for the HCl⁺ forming pathway, the dication dissociates from repulsive states and therefore, undergoes rapid dissociation. Finally, quantum chemical calculations have been performed to understand the intramolecular proton migration and dissociation of the CH₃Cl dication along the pathways mentioned above. Our study explains the mechanism of H_n⁺ and HCl⁺ formation and confirms that intensity and pulse duration can serve as parameters to influence the excited state dynamics and hence, the outcome of the two-body dissociation of CH₃Cl²⁺.

Effects of the Cationic Structure on the Adsorption Performance of Ionic Polymers toward Au(III): an Experimental and DFT Study

Ionic polymers have been proven to be promising adsorbents in recovering Au(III) due to their advantages of simple synthesis and high adsorption efficiency. However, the unclarity of the relationship between the adsorption ability of ionic polymers and their cationic structures hinders further optimization of their adsorption performance. This study synthesized a series of ionic polymers with pyridinium, imidazolium, piperidinium, pyrrolidinium, and triethylammonium cations to discover the effects of the cationic structure on their adsorption properties. Experimental results show that the existence of anion-π interaction between aromatic cations and [AuCl₄]^- makes the aromatic cations-anion interaction stronger, which does not enhance the adsorption performance of the aromatic-based ionic polymer. This is due to the charge delocalization in the aromatic ring, resulting in a lower electrostatic potential (ESP) of aromatic cations than that of aliphatic cations with a localized charge. The higher the ESP of cations, the better the adsorption performance of the corresponding ionic polymer. This study serves as a deep understanding of the cationic structure-adsorptive performance relationship of the ionic polymer at the molecular level and further provides a theoretical guidance to optimize the adsorption performance of ionic polymers.

A comprehensive multidisciplinary investigation on CO2 capture from diesel engine

Climate change and global warming are the visible consequences of the increased amount of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the atmosphere. Among the various sources of anthropogenic CO₂ emission, the diesel engine has a significant contribution. The development of a reliable system to efficiently minimize CO₂ emissions from diesel engines to the safest level is lacking in the open literature. Therefore, a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach has been applied in this paper to investigate the efficacy of the post-combustion carbon capture (PCC) process for the diesel engine. The experiments have been performed on the exhaust of a direct injection diesel engine at five different brake powers with blends of aqueous ammonia (AQ_NH₃), monoethanolamine (MEA), N,N-dimethylethanolamine (DMEA), and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (C₂mim BF₄) ionic liquid (IL) as an absorbent for CO₂ capture. The reaction mechanism of these absorbent with CO₂ are also studied by the geometrical, energetical, MESP, frontier molecular orbitals, and NBO analysis using the first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The maximum CO₂ absorption efficiency of almost 97% was achieved for the blend consisting of 67% of AQ_NH₃ and 33% of MEA. Moreover, AQ_MEA and blend of AQ_NH₃, DMEA, and C₂mim BF₄ ionic liquid showed 96% and 94% CO₂ absorption efficiency, respectively.

Vibrational and conformational analysis of structural phase transition in Estradiol 17β valerate with temperature

Estradiol 17β valerate (E2V) is a hormonal medicine widely used in hormone replacement therapy. E2V undergoes a reversible isosymmetric structural phase transition at low temperature (̴ 250 K) which results from the reorientation of the valerate chain. The reversible isosymmetric structural phase transition follows Ehrenfest's classification when described as first-order and Buerger's classification when classified as order-disorder. The conformational difference also induces changes in molecular torsional angles and on the hydrogen bond pattern. In combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, vibrational spectroscopy has been used to correlate the valerate chain modes with the modifications of the dihedral angles on phase transition. We are expecting improvement in our understanding of the phase transition mechanism driven by the temperature. The Conformational analysis reveals the feasible structures corresponding to changes in the dihedral angles associated with the valerate chain. The infrared spectra of calculated conformers are in good agreement with the experimental spectra of E2V structure recorded at room temperature revealing that the changes in valerate chain modes at 1115 cm^-1, 1200 cm^-1and 1415 cm^-1 fingerprint the molecular conformation. An investigation made to determine the ligand-protein interaction of E2V through docking against estrogen receptor (ER) reveals the inhibitive and agonist nature of E2V.

MAS-NMR of [Pyr13][Tf2N] and [Pyr16][Tf2N] Ionic Liquids Confined to Carbon Black: Insights and Pitfalls

Electrolytes based on ionic liquids (IL) are promising candidates to replace traditional liquid electrolytes in electrochemical systems, particularly in combination with carbon-based porous electrodes. Insight into the dynamics of such systems is imperative for tailoring electrochemical performance. In this work, 1-Methyl-1-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and 1-Hexyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide were studied in a carbon black (CB) host using spectrally resolved Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) and 13-interval Pulsed Field Gradient Stimulated Echo (PFGSTE) Magic Angle Spinning Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (MAS-NMR). Data were processed using a sensitivity weighted Laplace inversion algorithm without non-negativity constraint. Previously found relations between the alkyl length and the aggregation behavior of pyrrolidinium-based cations were confirmed and characterized in more detail. For the IL in CB, a different aggregation behavior was found compared to the neat IL, adding the surface of a porous electrode as an additional parameter for the optimization of IL-based electrolytes. Finally, the suitability of MAS was assessed and critically discussed for investigations of this class of samples.

Understanding the Photoexcitation of Room Temperature Ionic Liquids

Photoexcitation of (neat) room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) leads to the observation of transient species that are reminiscent of the composition of the RTILs themselves. In this minireview, we summarize state-of-the-art in the understanding of the underlying elementary processes. By varying the anion or cation, one aim is to generally predict radiation-induced chemistry and physics of RTILs. One major task is to address the fate of excess electrons (and holes) after photoexcitation, which implies an overview of various formation mechanisms considering structural and dynamical aspects. Therefore, transient studies on time scales from femtoseconds to microseconds can greatly help to elucidate the most relevant steps after photoexcitation. Sometimes, radiation may eventually result in destruction of the RTILs making photostability another important issue to be discussed. Finally, characteristic heterogeneities can be associated with specific physicochemical properties. Influencing these properties by adding conventional solvents, like water, can open a wide field of application, which is briefly summarized.

The structural properties of a ZnCl2-ethylene glycol binary system and the peculiarities at the eutectic composition

ATR-FTIR spectroscopy was performed on a series of ZnCl2-ethylene glycol (EG) mixtures with a wide-range of compositions (1 : 1.5-1 : 14 in molar ratios), involving the stable ZnCl2-4EG deep-eutectic solvent (DES) composition, to explore the spectral variations, structural heterogeneity, and hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) properties. To enhance the resolution of the spectra, excess absorption and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopies were employed. In the initial IR spectra, a quasi-isosbestic point was identified, signaling that the major disturbance on EG microstructures by adding ZnCl2 is to form a distinct complex. Further analysis uncovered the main transformation process to be from the EG tetramer to the ZnCl2-4EG complex. It was also found that as the EG content increases, negative charge increasingly transfers to ZnCl2, resulting in the strengthening of the Zn ← O coordination bonds and the weakening and finally dissociation of Zn-Cl bonds. Regarding the ZnCl2-4EG DES, several incomparable specificities were observed. It was found that ZnCl2 destructed the H-bonding network of pure EG to the largest extent, resulting in the highest production of the dimer and trimer of EG. Moreover, in comparison with other compositions, the ZnCl2-4EG DES showed abrupt increases in the negative charge of the salt, the length of the Zn-Cl bond, and the strength of the Zn ← O coordination bond. All these imply the strongest intermolecular interactions and the highest solvation of ZnCl2 in EG at the eutectic composition compared to those of other mixtures, resulting in a super-stable liquid mixture. The work provides physical insights into the structural and interactive properties of deep-eutectic solvents.
