Pyrene-Based Cationic Fluorophores with High Affinity for BF4-, PF6-, and ClO4- Anions: Detection and Removal

Anions play an indispensable role in the balance and regulation of the ecological environment and human health; however, excess anions can cause serious ecological and environment problems. Therefore, the detection and removal of excess anions in aqueous solution is not only a technological problem but also crucial for environmental protection. Herein, a set of water-soluble pyrene-based cationic fluorophores were synthesized, which exhibit high sensitivity for the detection of the anions BF4-, PF6-, and ClO4- via electrostatic interactions. Such fluorescent probes exhibit "turn-on" emission characteristics even at low concentrations of anions due to anion-π+ interactions. Moreover, these fluorescence probes act as efficient precipitating agents for the removal of the BF4-, PF6-, and ClO4- anions from an aqueous environment. This work opens up new avenues for future research on pyrene-based fluorophores as turn-on fluorescence probes for anion detection and as excellent precipitating agents in environmental settings.

Current Advances in Diazoles-based Chemosensors for CN- and FDetection

Advances in molecular probes have recently intensified because they are valuable tools in studying species of interest for human health, the environment, and industry. Among these species, cyanide (CN-) and fluoride (F-) stand out as hazardous and toxic ions in trace amounts. Thus, there is a significant interest in probes design for their detection with diverse diazoles (pyrazole and imidazole) used for this purpose. These diazole derivatives are known as functional molecules because of their known synthetic versatility and applicability, as they exhibit essential photophysical properties with helpful recognition centers. This review provides an overview of the recent progress (2017-2021) in diazole-based sensors for CN- and F- detection, using the azolic ring as a signaling or recognition unit. The discussion focuses on the mechanism of the action described for recognizing the anion, the structure of the probes with the best synthetic simplicity, detection limits (LODs), application, and selectivity. In this context, the analysis involves probes for cyanide sensing first, then probes for fluoride sensing, and ultimately, dual probes that allow both species recognition.

Unveiling of a smartphone-mediated ratiometric chemosensor towards the nanomolar level detection of lethal CN-: combined experimental and theoretical validation with the proposition of a molecular logic circuitry

A promising naphthalene-functionalized ratiometric chemosensor (E)-1-((naphthalen-5-yl) methylene)-2-(2,4-dinitrophenyl) hydrazine (DNMH) is unveiled in the present work. DNMH demonstrates brisk discernible colorimetric response from yellow to red in the presence of CN⁻, a lethal environmental contaminant, in a near-perfect aqueous medium with a LOD of 278 nM. The “key role marker” controlling the electrochemical and non-covalent H-bonding interaction between DNMH and CN⁻ is through the commendable role of acidic –NH functionalities. Kinetic studies reveal a pseudo second order reaction rate and the formation of an unprecedented photostable adduct. The negative value of ΔG as evaluated from ITC substantiates the spontaneity of the DNMH⋯CN⁻ interaction. The sensing mechanism was further reinforced with state-of-the-art theoretical investigations, namely DFT, TDDFT and Fukui indices (FIs). Moreover, the proposition of a reversible multi-component logic circuitry implementing Boolean functions in molecular electronics has also been triggered by the turn-over spectrophotometric response of the ditopic ions CN⁻ and Cd²⁺. The cytotoxicity of DNMH towards Bacillus thuringiensis and Escherichia coli is successfully investigated via the MTT assay. Impressively, “dip stick” and “easy to prepare” test paper device and silica gel-based solid-phase CN⁻ recognition validate the on-site analytical application of DNMH. Furthermore, the involvement of a synergistic approach between ‘chemistry beyond the molecule’ and ‘engineering’ via an exquisitely implemented smartphone-assisted colorimetric sensory prototype makes this work unprecedented among its congeners and introduces a new frontier in multitudinous material-based functional product development.

Colorimetric and turn-on fluorescent chemosensor with large stokes shift for sensitively probing cyanide anion in real samples and living systems

Cyanide anion is a ubiquitous chemical substance in the ecosystem, however, human daily life is severely threatened by its toxicity at any time. In this paper, a novel colorimetric and turn-on chemosensor 4-(4-(2,2-difluoro-6-methyl-2H-1,3,2-dioxaborinin-4-yl)buta-1,3-dien-1-yl)-N,N-dimethylaniline (NBF) for detecting cyanide anion was synthesized based on the 4-(dimethylamino)cinnamaldehyde and β-diketone difluoroboron complex. This fluorescent probe exhibited excellent spectroscopy properties such as large stokes shift, long emission wavelength, and good sensitivity. The detection limit of NBF towards cyanide ion was determined as low as 2.23 μM. Additionally, the detection mechanism towards cyanide ion was confirmed to be the nucleophilic addition interaction by high resolution mass spectrum (HRMS), ¹H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) titration, and quantum chemistry theory calculation. In addition, the probe NBF had been successfully utilized in detecting cyanide ions in water and food samples as well as imaging in the biological system, which broadened its practical application prospects.

An efficient chemodosimeter for the detection of Hg(II) via diselenide oxidation

Mercury ions are toxic and exhibit hazardous effects on the environment and biological systems, and thus demand for the selective and sensitive detection of mercury has become considerably an important issue. Here, we have developed a diselenide containing coumarin-based probe 3 for the selective detection of Hg(II) with a "turn-on" response (a 48 fold increase in fluorescence intensity) at 438 nm. The probe could quantitatively detect Hg(II) with a detection limit of 1.32 μM in PBS solution. Moreover, the probe has operable efficiency over the physiological range with an increase in the quantum yield from 1.2% to 57.3%. The reaction of the probe with Hg(II) yielded a novel monoselenide based coumarin 4via diselenide oxidation, which was confirmed by single crystal XRD. Furthermore, the biological use of the probe for the detection of Hg(II) was confirmed in the MCF-7 cell line. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reaction-based probe for Hg(II) via diselenide oxidation.

Rosmarinic Acid-Capped Silver Nanoparticles for Colorimetric Detection of CN- and Redox-Modulated Surface Reaction-Aided Detection of Cr(VI) in Water

Rosmarinic acid-capped silver nanoparticles (Ro-AgNPs) were prepared and applied as a probe for selective colorimetric detection of cyanide (CN-) and chromium(VI) [Cr(VI)] under different conditions in aqueous media. The carbon atom of CN- interacts with the AgNPs, and the carbon atom donates electrons from the HOMO to the vacant orbitals of the coordinatively unsaturated surface atom (Ag0). After donating electrons, CN- attached onto the surface of the nanoparticles becomes very reactive and interacts with dissolved oxygen and generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide (O2 -), singlet oxygen (1O2), and so forth. In this process, Ag0 oxidizes to Ag+ and combines with CN- forming water-insoluble AgCN, and the ROS (O2 -) formed reacts with Ag/Ag+ to form Ag2O. The oxidation of Ag0 to Ag+ resulted in dissolution of AgNPs, which causes disappearance of the surface plasmon resonance band and color change from yellow to colorless. For detection of Cr(VI), ascorbic acid and CN- were added first; the ascorbic acid replaced the rosmarinic acid and then reduced the added Cr(VI) to Cr(III), and, in this process, ascorbic acid was oxidized to dehydroascorbic acid, which moved away from the nanoparticles' surface. CN- then interacted with the surface Ag0 atom, got activated, and interacted with dissolved oxygen forming Ag+ and ROS, which then followed the same process as described for CN- to form AgCN and Ag2O with a color change. The limits of detection were found to be 0.01 and 0.03 μM for CN- and Cr(VI), respectively. The material was also used for sensing CN- and Cr(VI) in real samples, and the results obtained were satisfactory. For field application, agarose-based strips were prepared by immobilizing the nanoparticles onto the agarose film and successfully used for the detection of CN- and Cr(VI) in water.

Colorimetric fluoride detection in dimethyl sulfoxide using a heteroleptic ruthenium(ii) complex with amino and amide groups: X-ray crystallographic and spectroscopic analyses

A bis-heteroleptic ruthenium(ii) complex, [Ru(Hdpa)₂(H₂pia)]X₂ (1·X₂; X = Cl, OTf, or F; Hdpa = di-2-pyridylamine; H₂pia = 2-pycolinamide; OTf⁻ = CF₃SO₃⁻), was synthesized and spectroscopically and crystallographically characterized. The crystal structures of 1·Cl₂·2.5H₂O and 1·F₂·2EtOH revealed essentially identical geometries for the 1²⁺ dication; however, the dihedral angle between the two pyridyl groups in the Hdpa ligands, which represented the degree of bending of the bent conformation, was affected by hydrogen-bonding interactions between the NH group and counterions. In 1·F₂·2EtOH, one of the Hdpa ligands had an unusually smaller dihedral angle (15.8°) than the others (29.9°–35.0°). The two NH groups of each Hdpa ligand and the NH₂ group of the H₂pia ligand in 1²⁺ acted as receptors for F⁻ anion recognition via hydrogen-bonding interactions in a dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution, and the reaction showed an unambiguous color change in the visible region. Upon the addition of tetra-n-butylammonium fluoride to the red DMSO solution of 1·(OTf)₂·H₂O, the solution turned dark brown. ¹H NMR analysis and absorption spectroscopy of the reaction between 1²⁺ and the added F⁻ anions revealed that the F⁻ anions did not distinguish between the two amino groups of Hdpa and the amide group of H₂pia, although they were in different environments in the DMSO solution. A tris-F-adduct with 1²⁺, 1·F₃⁻, was formed when sufficient F⁻ anions were present in the solution, despite the presence of four NH protons in 1²⁺. Time-dependent DFT calculations of 1²⁺ and 1·F₃⁻ were consistent with their absorption spectra.

Small molecule-based chromogenic and fluorogenic probes play an indispensable role in many sensing applications. Ideal optical chemosensors should provide selectivity and sensitivity towards a variety of analytes. Synthetic accessibility and attractive photophysical properties have made squaraine dyes an enticing platform for the development of chemosensors. This review highlights the versatility of modular assemblies of squaraine-based chemosensors and chemodosimeters that take advantage of the availability of various structurally and functionally diverse recognition motifs, as well as utilizing additional recognition capabilities due to the unique structural features of the squaraine ring.

Advancement in functionalized luminescent frameworks and their prospective applications as inkjet-printed sensors and anti-counterfeit materials

Supramolecular luminescent frameworks with conjugated architectures exhibits interesting photophysical properties with phenomenal chemical and thermal stability. This has instigated global researchers towards its extensive application in toxic analyte detection and the formulation of anti-counterfeit materials. In correlation with this present scenario, luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs), possessing tailorable structural and functional properties and exceptional physicochemical features, have been categorized as emerging 'smart materials'. Interestingly, LMOFs have assisted in the rapid development of an effectual sensing platform and swift fabrication of anti-counterfeit materials on desirable substrates with the aid of 'Inkjet Printing', which is a viable, low-cost, and high-resolution technology. Inkjet printing is an excellent material deposition technique in the modern era owing to its easy settling over flexible substrates, simplistic emergence of large area image patterns with improved throughput, minimal cost, explicit resolution, and least waste generation. The present review provides state-of-the-art progress on LMOFs based (i) luminescent security ink fabrication with static and dynamic multinodal luminescent materials and (ii) sensory device formulation for the easy and instantaneous recognition of hazardous analytes through the 'Inkjet Printing' technology. This techno-chemical integration will be certainly beneficial to prevent the growth of counterfeit materials and monitor the bioaccumulation of hazardous analytes in our ecological system.

High-contrast colourimetric probes for fluoride and trace water based on tautomerization of naphthalimide and application in fingerprint imaging

Three probes for fluoride ion and trace water based on naphthalimide were designed and synthesized. A new sensing mechanism based on naphthalimide tautomerization induced by fluoride ion and water was explored in the aprotic organic solvent. In the fluoride ion sensing process, the probes exhibited a remarkable absorption peak centred at 560 nm in the visible range of 400-700 nm. When trace water presented, the newly formed absorption peak centred at 560 nm gradually disappeared. The sensitive colour variation of the probe also was used in fingerprint imaging. Accordingly, the significant changes in chemical shift of dept135 and ¹HNMR spectrum confirmed the structural transformation of the probes with high contrast. Furthermore, this work also presented an optimization strategy for the sensitivity of the probe based on regulatory tautomerization.
