Probing the high performance of photoinduced birefringence in V-shaped azo/PMMA guest-host films

A Two-Dimensional Hybrid Perovskite With Heat Switching Birefringence

Birefringent crystals that can switch light polarization have important applications in optoelectronics. In the last decades, birefringence is mostly optimized by chemical strategies. Recently, switching birefringence by physical means has attracted much attention. Here, this work reports the observation of heat switching birefringence in a 2D layered hybrid halide perovskite (C2 N3 H4 )2 PbCl4 ((C2 N3 H4 )+ =1,2,4-triazolium). This heat switching birefringence leads to a significant change in the interference color for the crystal plate under the illumination of orthogonal polarized light. Structure analyses reveal a heat dependent structure transition in (C2 N3 H4 )2 PbCl4 , whose birefringence is switched by the change in the distortion degree of PbCl6 octahedron. This discovery may be beneficial to the further development of stimuli-responsive polarization optical devices.

Size-dependent photoinduced transparency in colloidal CdTe quantum dots in the strong confinement regime: an inverse linear relationship

Nanomaterials have been investigated as saturable absorbers for ultrafast lasers because of their large photoinduced transparency related to ground-state bleaching. However, the quantum dot size effect on the photoinduced transparency in the strong confinement regime has not been explored due to the challenge of accurately measuring the ground state and the excited-state absorption cross-sections. At the same time, these optical properties are essential to calculate several chemical and physical quantities at the nanoscale. In this context, we have employed the photoluminescence saturation method to determine the ground-state absorption cross-section and the femtosecond open-aperture Z-scan technique to investigate the size-dependent ground-state bleaching of glutathione-capped CdTe QDs synthesized in an aqueous medium. The results were modeled using rate equations within the three-energy levels approach. Our results pointed out that the photoinduced transparency rate at the 1S_3/2(h) → 1S(e) transition peak presents an inverse linear relationship with the QD diameter (from 2.2 nm up to 3 nm). Otherwise, the larger QDs have a higher ground-state cross-section, which is directly proportional to the ground-state bleaching. To explain this apparent contradiction, we calculate the effective absorption coefficient α_eff = σ/V (σ is the absorption cross section and V is the QD volume) for the QDs and observed that the smaller QDs have a higher absorption from the ground to the first excited state, corroborating our results. Finally, our results showed that the saturable absorption effect in CdTe-QDs is slightly higher than that obtained for graphene and other 2D materials and smaller than the black phosphorus in the visible region.

Multiple Azoarenes Based Systems - Photoswitching, Supramolecular Chemistry and Application Prospects

In the recent decades, the investigations on photoresponsive molecular systems with multiple azoarenes are quite popular in diverse perspectives ranging from fundamental understanding of multiple photoswitches, supramolecular chemistry, and various application prospects. In fact, several insightful and conceptual designs of such systems were investigated with architectural distinctions. In particular, the demonstration of applications such as data storage with the help of multistate or orthogonal photoswitches, light modulation of catalysis via cooperative switching, sensors using supramolecular host-guest interactions, and materials such as liquid crystals, grating, actuators, etc. are some of the milestones in this area. Herein, we cover the recent advancements in the research areas of multiazoarenes containing systems that have been classified into Type-1 {linear, non-linear, and core-based (A)}, Type-2 {tripodal C₃ -symmetric (C3)} and Type-3 {macrocyclic (M)} structural motifs.

Tautomeric influence on the photoinduced birefringence of 4-substituted phthalimide 2-hydroxy Schiff bases in PMMA matrix

The photoinduced birefringence of two 4-substituted phthalimide 2-hydroxy Schiff bases, containing salicylic (4) and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl (5) moieties has been investigated in PMMA matrix. Their optical behaviour as nanocomposite films was revealed by combined use of DFT quantum chemical calculations (in ground and excited state) and experimental optical spectroscopy (UV-Vis and fluorescence). The results have shown that solid-state reversible switching takes place by enol/keto tautomerization and Z/E isomerization. Birefringence study was performed in the PMMA nanocomposite films using pump lasers at λ_rec = 355 nm and λ_rec = 442 nm. Fast response time and high stability of anisotropy up to 58% for (4) and 95% for (5) after turning off the excitation laser, was observed, which makes these materials appropriate candidates for cutting-edge optical information technology materials. The possibility for multiple cycles of recording, reading and optical erasure of the photoinduced birefringence at λ_rec = 442 nm in 5 has been demonstrated. The obtained results have shown that the maximum value of the measured birefringence is close to the anisotropic characteristics of the most frequently used azo materials.
