DFT study of H2 adsorption at a Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite: a cluster approach

Tailored Metal-Organic Frameworks for Water Purification: Perfluorinated Fe-MOFs for Enhanced Heterogeneous Catalytic Ozonation

An industrially viable catalyst for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (HCO) in water purification requires the characteristics of good dispersion of active species on its surface, efficient electron transfer for ozone decay, and maximum active species utilization. While metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent an attractive platform for HCO, the metal nodes in the unmodified MOFs exhibit low catalytic activity. Herein, we present a perfluorinated Fe-MOF catalyst by substituting H atoms on the metalated ligands with F atoms (termed 4F-MIL-88B) to induce structure evolution. The Lewis acidity of 4F-MIL-88B was enhanced via the formation of Fe nodes, tailoring the electron distribution on the catalyst surface. As a result of catalyst modification, the rate constant for degradation of the target compounds examined increased by ∼700% compared with that observed for the unmodified catalyst. Experimental evidence and theoretical calculations showed that the modulated polarity and the enhanced electron transfer between the catalyst and ozone molecules contributed to the adsorption and transformation of O3 to •OH on the catalyst surface. Overall, the results of this study highlight the significance of tailoring the metalated ligands to develop highly efficient and stable MOF catalysts for HCO and provide an in-depth mechanistic understanding of their structure-function evolution, which is expected to facilitate the applications of nanomaterial-based processes in water purification.

Studying the adsorption of emerging organic contaminants in zeolites with dispersion-corrected density functional theory calculations: From numbers to recommendations

Adsorption energies obtained from dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT) calculations show a considerable dependence on the choice of exchange-correlation functional and dispersion correction. A number of investigations have employed different approaches to compute adsorption energies of small molecules in zeolites, using reference values from high-level calculations and/or experiments. Such comparative studies are lacking for larger functional organic molecules such as pharmaceuticals or personal care products, despite their potential relevance for applications, e. g., in contaminant removal or drug delivery. The present study aims to fill this gap by comparing adsorption energies and, for selected cases, equilibrium structures of emerging organic contaminants adsorbed in MOR- and FAU-type all-silica zeolites. A total of 13 dispersion-corrected DFT approaches are compared, including methods using a pairwise dispersion correction as well as non-local van der Waals density functionals. While absolute values of adsorption energies vary widely, qualitative trends across the set of zeolite-guest combinations are not strongly dependent on the choice of functional. For selected cluster models, DFT adsorption energies are compared to reference values from coupled cluster (DLPNO-CCSD(T)) calculations. Although all DFT approaches deliver systematically more negative adsorption energies than the coupled cluster reference, this tendency is least pronounced for the rev-vdW-DF2 functional.

A Theoretical Investigation of Cu+, Ni2+ and Co2+-exchanged Zeolites for Hydrogen Storage

This study investigates the H 2 adsorption on Cu + , Ni 2+ and Co 2+ -exchanged SSZ-13 (CHA) and SSZ-39 (AEI) using periodic DFT computations. Most stable Cu + position was found to be the 6-membered-ring window for both zeolites. Similarly, for investigated Ni 2+ and Co 2+ loadings on 6-membered-ring windows, the third nearest neighbor Al positions, i.e., Al-O-Si-O-Si-O-Al coordination, was found to be the most stable position. H 2 adsorption was investigated for all the Cu + , Ni 2+ and Co 2+ centers. AEI and CHA resulted in similar H 2 -Cu interactions for the Al and B substituted structures. H 2 adsorption on Cu + located in the 8-membered-ring gave the highest adsorption energy for both frameworks. Replacing Al with B in the framework increased the electron back donation from Cu + (3d) orbitals to H 2 antibonding orbital (s H2 * ). The H 2 adsorption energies on the Ni 2+ and Co 2+ -exchanged zeolites were found to be between -15 and -44 kJ/mol. Higher energy values were observed on the AEI framework, especially when two Al atoms have the Al-O-Si-O-Al configuration. Lesser interaction of the d-orbitals in the case of the Co 2+ and Ni 2+ cations resulted in heat of H 2 adsorption close to optimum values required for H 2 storage on porous materials.
