Controlling the thermally activated delayed fluorescence of axially chiral organic emitters and their racemate for information encryption

Thermal control over phosphorescence or thermally activated delayed fluorescence in a metal-organic framework

By integrating a tailor-made donor-acceptor (D-A) ligand in a metal-organic framework (MOF), a material with unprecedented features emerges. The ligand combines a pair of cyano groups as acceptors with four sulfanylphenyls as donors, which expose each a carboxylic acid as coordination sites. Upon treatment with zinc nitrate in a solvothermal synthesis, the MOF is obtained. The new material combines temperature-assisted reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) and intersystem crossing (ISC). As these two mechanisms are active in different temperature windows, thermal switching between their characteristic emission wavelengths is observed for this material. The two mechanisms can be activated by both, one-photon absorption (OPA) and two-photon absorption (TPA) resulting in a large excitement window ranging from ultraviolet (UV) over visible light (VL) to near infrared (NIR). Furthermore, the emission features of the material are pH sensitive, such that its application potential is demonstrated in a first ammonia sensor.

Synthetic progress of organic thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters via C-H activation and functionalization

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters have become increasingly prominent due to their promising applications across various fields, prompting a continuous demand for developing reliable synthetic methods to access them. This review aims to highlight the progress made in the last decade in synthesizing organic TADF compounds through C-H bond activation and functionalization. The review begins with a brief introduction to the basic features and design principles of TADF emitters. It then provides an overview of the advantages and concise development of C-H bond transformations in constructing TADF emitters. Subsequently, it summarizes both transition-metal-catalyzed and non-transition-metal-promoted C-H bond transformations used for the synthesis of TADF emitters. Finally, the review gives an outlook on further challenges and potential directions in this field.

Achievement of efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials based on 1,8-naphthalimide derivatives exhibiting piezochromic and thermochromic luminescence

In this study, we developed a D-A type imide derivative based on 1,8-naphthalimide, NI-mPCz, which exhibited outstanding thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) properties. Additionally, it demonstrates characteristics of piezochromic and thermochromic luminescence. The thermochromic luminescence observed is attributed to crystalline transformations occurring during the heating process, as evidenced by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and microscopic examinations. Moreover, the good compatibility of NI-mPCz with HeLa cells and its excellent imaging performance indicate its potential for application in the field of biological imaging. These results provide valuable insights for the design and development of new organic electronic and bioimaging materials with high-efficiency TADF characteristics.

Recent advances in the design of afterglow materials: mechanisms, structural regulation strategies and applications

Afterglow materials are attracting widespread attention owing to their distinctive and long-lived optical emission properties which create exciting opportunities in various fields. Recent research has led to the discovery of many new afterglow materials featuring high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) and lifetimes of up to several hours under ambient conditions. Afterglow materials are typically categorized according to their luminescence mechanism, such as long-persistent luminescence (LPL), room temperature phosphorescence (RTP), or thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Through rational design and novel synthetic strategies to modulate spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and populate triplet exciton states (T1), luminophores with long lifetimes and bright afterglow characteristics can be realized. Initial research towards afterglow materials focused mainly on pure inorganic materials, many of which possessed inherent disadvantages such as metal toxicity or low energy emissions. In recent years, organic-inorganic hybrid afterglow materials (OIHAMs) have been developed with high PLQY and long lifetimes. These hybrid materials exploit the tunable structure and easy processing of organic molecules, as well as enhanced SOC and intersystem crossing (ISC) processes involving heavy atom dopants, to achieve excellent afterglow performance. In this review, we begin by briefly discussing the structure and composition of inorganic and organic-inorganic hybrid afterglow materials, including strategies for regulating their lifetime, PLQY and luminescence wavelength. The specific advantages of organic-inorganic hybrid afterglow materials, including low manufacturing costs, diverse molecular/electronic structures, tunable structures and optical properties, and compatibility with a variety of substrates, are emphasized. Subsequently, we discuss in detail the fundamental mechanisms used by afterglow materials, their classification, design principles, and end applications (including sensing, anticounterfeiting, and photoelectric devices, among others). Finally, existing challenges and promising future directions are discussed, laying a platform for the design of afterglow materials for specific applications.

Switchable and Highly Robust Ultralong Room-Temperature Phosphorescence from Polymer-Based Transparent Films with Three-Dimensional Covalent Networks for Erasable Light Printing

In this work, an efficient polymer-based organic afterglow system, which shows reversible photochromism, switchable ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP), and prominent water and chemical resistance simultaneously, has been developed for the first time. By doping phenoxazine (PXZ) and 10-ethyl-10H-phenoxazine (PXZEt) into epoxy polymers, the resulting PXZ@EP-0.25 % and PXZEt@EP-0.25 % films show unique photoactivated UOP properties, with phosphorescence quantum yields and lifetimes up to 10.8 % and 845 ms, respectively. It is found that the steady-state luminescence and UOP of PXZ@EP-0.25 % are switchable by light irradiation and thermal annealing. Moreover, the doped films can still produce conspicuous UOP after soaking in water, strong acid and base, and organic solvents for more than two weeks, exhibiting outstanding water and chemical resistance. Inspired by these exciting results, the PXZ@EP-0.25 % has been successfully exploited as an erasable transparent film for light printing.

Color-Tunable Dual-Mode Organic Afterglow from Classical Aggregation-Caused Quenching Compounds for White-Light-Manipulated Anti-Counterfeiting

Color-tunable dual-mode organic afterglow excited by ultraviolet (UV) and white light was achieved from classical aggregation-caused quenching compounds for the first time. Specifically, two luminescent systems, which could produce significant organic afterglow composed of persistent thermally activated delayed fluorescence and ultralong organic phosphorescence under ambient conditions, were constructed by doping fluorescein sodium and calcein sodium into aluminum sulfate. Their lifetimes surpassed 600 ms, and the dopant concentrations were as low as 5×10^-6  wt %. Moreover, the persistent luminescence colors of the materials could be tuned from blue to green and then to yellow by simply varying the concentrations of guest compounds or the temperature in the range of 260-340 K. Inspired by these exciting results, the afterglow materials were used for UV- and white-light-manipulated anti-counterfeiting and preparation of elastomers with different colors of persistent luminescence.

9,9-Bis[4-(N-aryl)phenyl]methylidene-xanthylidene Derivatives Displaying Mechano-, Crystallo-, and Thermochromism

Tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivatives bearing a xanthene moiety are of interest because they have novel optical properties. 9,9-Bis[4-(N,N-diphenylamino)phenyl] and 9,9-bis[4-(9-carbazolyl)-phenyl]methylidene-xanthylidenes 3 and 4 were synthesized using Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of 9,9-dibromomethylidene-xanthylidene with the corresponding boronic acids. Diphenylamino derivative 3 exhibits mechanochromism and mechanofluorochromism (MC and MFC) reflected in absorption and fluorescence color changes. In contrast, carbazolyl derivative 4 displays thermo- and crystallo-chromism in addition to MC and MFC in the solid state. Powder X-ray diffraction and single crystal X-ray crystallographic analysis reveal that the solid state photophysical properties of these substances are governed by conformational changes rather by the creation of planar π-conjugation extended geometries.

Bright Organic Mechanoluminescence and Remarkable Mechanofluorochromism from Circularly Polarized TADF Enantiomers with Aggregation-Induced Emission Properties

The development of circularly polarized thermally activated delayed fluorescence (CP-TADF) luminogens with stimuli-response characteristics remains challenging. Herein, a pair of organic enantiomers, S-CzTA and R-CzTA, with aggregation-induced emission properties, have been successfully developed by introducing chiral 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene and carbazole to phthalimide. They present CP-TADF properties in toluene solutions, giving dissymmetric factors of 0.84×10^-3 and -1.03×10^-3 , respectively. In the crystalline state, both S-CzTA and R-CzTA can emit intense blue TADF and produce very bright sky-blue mechanoluminescence (ML) and remarkable mechanofluorochromism (MFC) under the stimuli of mechanical force. Single-crystal analysis and theoretical calculation results suggest that their ML activities are probably associated with their chiral and polar molecular structures and unique non-centrosymmetric molecular packing modes. Furthermore, the MFC properties of the enantiomers likely originate from the destruction of crystal structure, leading to the planarization of molecular conformation. This work may provide helpful guidance for developing new CP-TADF materials with force-stimuli-responsive properties.

Dynamically stable and amplified circularly polarized excimer emission regulated by solvation of chiral co-assembly process

Chiral supramolecular assembly has been assigned to be one of the most favorable strategies for the development of excellent circularly polarized luminescent (CPL)-active materials. Herein, we report our study of an achiral boron-containing pyrene (Py)-based chromophore (PyBO) as a circularly polarized excimer emission (CPEE) dye induced by chiral co-assemblies containing chiral binaphthyl-based enantiomers (R/S-M). Chiral co-assembly R/S-M-(PyBO)₄ fresh film spin-coated from toluene solution can exhibit orderly nanofibers and strong green CPEE (λ_em = 512 nm, g_em = ±0.45, Φ_FL = 51.2 %) resulting from an achiral PyBO excimer. In contrast, only a very weak blue CPL was observed (λ_em = 461 nm, g_em = ±  0.0125, Φ_FL = 19.0 %) after 187 h due to PyBO monomer emission as spherulite growth. Interestingly, this kind of chiral co-assembly R-M-(PyBO)₄-T film from tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution retains uniform morphology and affords the most stable and strongest CPEE performance (λ_em = 512 nm, g_em = + 0.62, Φ_FL = 53.3 %) after 10 days.

Chiral supramolecular assembly is an important strategy for the development of excellent circularly polarized luminescent (CPL)-active materials, but often they suffer from low quantum yield and luminescence dissymmetry factor. Herein, the authors we report a chiral coassembly process of achiral pyrene-based dyes leading to chiral excimers emitting with a high dissymmetry factor.

Efficient and Color-Tunable Dual-Mode Afterglow from Large-Area and Flexible Polymer-Based Transparent Films for Anti-Counterfeiting and Information Encryption

It remains a great challenge to develop polymer-based materials with efficient and color-tunable organic afterglow. Two indolocarbazole derivatives IaCzA and IbCzA have been synthesized and doped into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrices. It is found that the resulting films can produce unique dual-mode afterglow, which is composed of persistent thermally activated delayed fluorescence and ultralong organic phosphorescence. Besides, the IbCzA-doped PVA film exhibits intense blue afterglow with Φ_afterglow and τ_afterglow up to 19.8 % and 1.81 s, respectively, representing state-of-the-art dual-mode organic afterglow performance. Moreover, our reported film has high flexibility, excellent transparency, and large-area producibility; and the afterglow color of the film can be linearly tuned by temperature. Inspired by these distinctive properties, the PVA doped with IbCzA was employed as temperature-sensitive security ink for anti-counterfeiting and information encryption.

Inverted Circularly Polarized Luminescence Behavior Induced by Helical Nanofibers through Chiral Co-Assembly from Achiral Liquid Crystal Polymers and Chiral Inducers

Chiral supramolecular assembly can provide a powerful strategy for developing circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active materials by forming helices or superhelices into single or multiple components. Herein, we chose three achiral liquid crystal polymers (LC-P1/P2/P3) and chiral binaphthyl-based inducers (R/S-M) with anchored dihedral angles to construct chiral co-assemblies and explore the induced CPL behavior from pyrenyl (Py) emitters in achiral LC polymers through the regulation of helical nanofibers during the supramolecular co-assembly process. Most interestingly, chiral co-assembly (R/S-M)_0.1-(P3)_0.9 emitted an inverted blue-colored CPL signal during thermal annealing treatment at the glass transition temperature due to the flexible main chain of the LC polymer (LC-P3). The strongest blue-colored CPL emission for the (R/S-M)_0.1-(P3)_0.9 spin-coated film (λ_em = 455 nm, |g_em| = 6.47 × 10^-2, Φ_F = 48.5%) could be detected by using thermal annealing treatment at 105 °C.
