Photocatalysis Meets Confinement: An Emerging Opportunity for Photoinduced Organic Transformations

The self-assembled metal-organic cages (MOCs) have been evolved as a paradigm of enzyme-mimic catalysts since they are able to synergize multifunctionalities inherent in metal and organic components and constitute microenvironments characteristic of enzymatic spatial confinement and versatile host-guest interactions, thus facilitating unconventional organic transformations via unique driving-forces such as weak noncovalent binding and electron/energy transfer. Recently, MOC-based photoreactors emerged as a burgeoning platform of supramolecular photocatalysis, displaying anomalous reactivities and selectivities distinct from bulk solution. This perspective recaps two decades journey of the photoinduced radical reactions by using photoactive metal-organic cages (PMOCs) as artificial reactors, outlining how the cage-confined photocatalysis was evolved from stoichiometric photoreactions to photocatalytic turnover, from high-energy UV-irradiation to sustainable visible-light photoactivation, and from simple radical reactions to multi-level chemo- and stereoselectivities. We will focus on PMOCs that merge structural and functional biomimicry into a single-cage to behave as multi-role photoreactors, emphasizing their potentials in tackling current challenges in organic transformations through single-electron transfer (SET) or energy transfer (EnT) pathways in a simple, green while feasible manner.

Sequential radical and cationic reactivity at separated sites within one molecule in solution

Distonic radical cations (DRCs) with spatially separated charge and radical sites are expected to show both radical and cationic reactivity at different sites within one molecule. However, such "dual" reactivity has rarely been observed in the condensed phase. Herein we report the isolation of crystalline 1λ2,3λ2-1-phosphonia-3-phosphinyl-cyclohex-4-enes 2a,b˙+, which can be considered delocalized DRCs and were completely characterized by crystallographic, spectroscopic, and computational methods. These DRCs contain a radical and cationic site with seven and six valence electrons, respectively, which are both stabilized via conjugation, yet remain spatially separated. They exhibit reactivity that differs from that of conventional radical cations (CRCs); specifically they show sequential radical and cationic reactivity at separated sites within one molecule in solution.

Linker-Guided Growth of Single-Crystal Covalent Organic Frameworks

The core features of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystallinity and porosity. However, the synthesis of single-crystal COFs with monomers of diverse reactivity and adjustment of their pore structures remain challenging. Here, we show that linkers that can react with a node to form single-crystal COFs can guide other linkers that form either COFs or amorphous polymers with the node to gain single-crystal COFs with mixed components, which are homogeneous on the unit cell scale with controlled ratios. With the linker-guided crystal growth method, we created nine types of single-crystal COFs with up to nine different components, which are more complex than any known crystal. The structure of the crystal adapted approximately to that of the main component, and its pore volume could be expanded up to 8.8%. Different components lead to complex and diverse pore structures and offer the possibilities to gain positive synergies, as exemplified by a bicomponent COF with 2200 and 733% SO2 uptake capacity of that of the two pure-component counterparts at 298 K and 0.002 bar. The selectivity for separation of SO2/CO2 ranges from 1230 to 4247 for flue gas based on ideal adsorbed solution theory, recording porous crystals. The bicomponent COF also exhibits a 1300% retention time of its pure-component counterparts for SO2 in a dynamic column breakthrough experiment for deep desulfurization.

Microporous Fluorinated MOF with Multiple Adsorption Sites for Efficient Recovery of C2H6 and C3H8 from Natural Gas

Purifying C2H6/C3H8 from a ternary natural gas mixture through adsorption separation is an important but challenging process in the petrochemical industry. To address this challenge, the industry is exploring effective strategies for designing high-performance adsorbents. In this study, we present two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), DMOF-TF and DMOF-(CF3)2, which have fluorinated pores obtained by substituting linker ligands in the host material. This pore engineering strategy not only provides suitable pore confinement but also enhances the adsorption capacities for C2H6/C3H8 by providing additional binding sites. Theoretical calculations and transient breakthrough experiments show that the introduction of F atoms not only improves the efficiency of natural gas separation but also provides multiple adsorption sites for C2H6/C3H8-framework interactions.

Characterization of Four Complete Mitogenomes of Monolepta Species and Their Related Phylogenetic Implications

Monolepta is one of the diverse genera in the subfamily Galerucinae, including 708 species and 6 sub-species worldwide. To explore the information on the mitogenome characteristics and phylogeny of the section "Monoleptites", especially the genus Monolepta, we obtained the newly completed mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) of four Monolepta species using high-throughput sequencing technology. The lengths of these four new mitochondrial genomes are 16,672 bp, 16,965 bp, 16,012 bp, and 15,866 bp in size, respectively. All four mitochondrial genomes include 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs), and one control region, which is consistent with other Coleoptera. The results of the nonsynonymous with synonymous substitution rates showed that ND6 had the highest evolution rate, while COI displayed the lowest evolution rate. The substitution saturation of three datasets (13 PCGs_codon1, 13 PCGs_codon2, 13 PCGs_codon3) showed that there was no saturation across all datasets. Phylogenetic analyses based on three datasets (ND1, 15 genes of mitogenomes, and 13 PCGs_AA) were carried out using maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) methods. The results showed that mitogenomes had a greater capacity to resolve the main clades than the ND1 gene at the suprageneric and species levels. The section "Monoleptites" was proven to be a monophyletic group, while Monolepta was a non-monophyletic group. Based on ND1 data, the newly sequenced species whose antennal segment 2 was shorter than 3 were split into several clades, while, based on the mitogenomic dataset, the four newly sequenced species had close relationships with Paleosepharia. The species whose antennal segment 2 was as long as 3 were split into two clades, which indicated that the characteristic of "antennal segment 2 as long as 3" of the true "Monolepta" evolved multiple times in several subgroups. Therefore, to explore the relationships among the true Monolepta, the most important thing is to perform a thorough revision of Monolepta and related genera in the future.

Anionic Ni-Based Metal-Organic Framework with Li(I) Cations in the Pores for Efficient C2H2/CO2 Separation

Acetylene (C2H2) is widely used as a raw material for producing various downstream commodities in the petrochemical and electronic industry. Therefore, the acquisition of high-purity C2H2 from a C2H2/CO2 mixture produced by partial methane combustion or thermal hydrocarbon cracking is of great significance yet highly challenging due to their similar physical and chemical properties. Herein, we report an anionic metal-organic framework (MOF) named LIFM-210, which has Li+ cations in the pores and shows a higher adsorption affinity for C2H2 than CO2. LIFM-210 is constructed by a unique tetranuclear Ni(II) cluster acting as a 10-connected node and an organic ligand acting as a 5-connected node. Single-component adsorption and transient breakthrough experiments demonstrate the good C2H2 selective separation performance of LIFM-210. Theoretical calculations revealed that Li+ ions strongly prefer C2H2 to CO2 and are primary adsorption sites, playing vital roles in the selective separation of C2H2/CO2.

Dynamic Stereochemistry of M8 Pd6 Supramolecular Cages Based on Metal-Center Lability for Differential Chiral Induction, Resolution, and Recognition

A series of isostructural supramolecular cages with a rhombic dodecahedron shape have been assembled with distinct metal-coordination lability (M8 Pd6 -MOC-16, M=Ru2+ , Fe2+ , Ni2+ , Zn2+ ). The chirality transfer between metal centers generally imposes homochirality on individual cages to enable solvent-dependent spontaneous resolution of Δ8 /Λ8 -M8 Pd6 enantiomers; however, their distinguishable stereochemical dynamics manifests differential chiral phenomena governed by the cage stability following the order Ru8 Pd6 >Ni8 Pd6 >Fe8 Pd6 >Zn8 Pd6 . The highly labile Zn centers endow the Zn8 Pd6 cage with conformational flexibility and deformation, enabling intrigue chiral-Δ8 /Λ8 -Zn8 Pd6 to meso-Δ4 Λ4 -Zn8 Pd6 transition induced by anions. The cage stabilization effect differs from inert Ru2+ , metastable Fe2+ /Ni2+ , and labile Zn2+ , resulting in different chiral-guest induction. Strikingly, solvent-mediated host-guest interactions have been revealed for Δ8 /Λ8 -(Ru/Ni/Fe)8 Pd6 cages to discriminate the chiral recognition of the guests with opposite chirality. These results demonstrate a versatile procedure to control the stereochemistry of metal-organic cages based on the dynamic metal centers, thus providing guidance to maneuver cage chirality at a supramolecular level by virtue of the solvent, anion, and guest to benefit practical applications.

Dynamic Metallosupramolecular Cages Containing 12 Adaptable Pockets for High-Order Guest Binding Beyond Biomimicry

Molecular recognition lies at the heart of biological functions, which inspires lasting research in artificial host syntheses to mimic biomolecules that can recognize, process, and transport molecules with the highest level of complexity; nonetheless, the design principle and quantifying methodology of artificial hosts for multiple guests (≥4) remain a formidable task. Herein, we report two rhombic dodecahedral cages [(Zn/Fe)8Pd6-MOC-16], which embrace 12 adaptive pockets for multiguest binding with distinct conformational dynamics inherent in metal-center lability and are able to capture 4-24 guests to manifest a surprising complexity of binding scenarios. The exceptional high-order and hierarchical encapsulation phenomena suggest a wide host-guest dynamic-fit, enabling conformational adjustment and adaptation beyond the duality of induced-fit and conformational selection in protein interactions. A critical inspection of the host-guest binding events in solution has been performed by NMR and ESI-MS spectra, highlighting the importance of acquiring a reliable binding repertoire from different techniques and the uncertainty of quantifying the binding affinities of multiplying guests by an oversimplified method.

Room temperature stable E,Z-diphosphenes: their isomerization, coordination, and cycloaddition chemistry

E,Z-isomers display distinct physical properties and chemical reactivities. However, investigations on heavy main group elements remain limited. In this work, we present the isolation and X-ray crystallographic characterization of N-heterocyclic vinyl (NHV) substituted diphosphenes as both E- and Z-isomers (L[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-P[double bond, length as m-dash]P-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]L, E,Z-2b; L = N-heterocyclic carbene). E-2b is thermodynamically more stable and undergoes reversible photo-stimulated isomerization to Z-2b. The less stable Z-isomer Z-2b can be thermally reverted to E-2b. Theoretical studies support the view that this E ↔ Z isomerization proceeds via P[double bond, length as m-dash]P bond rotation, reminiscent of the isomerization observed in alkenes. Furthermore, both E,Z-2b coordinate to an AuCl fragment affording the complex [AuCl(η2-Z-2b)] with the diphosphene ligand in Z-conformation, exclusively. In contrast, E,Z-2b undergo [2 + 4] and [2 + 1] cycloadditions with dienes or diazo compounds, respectively, yielding identical cycloaddition products in which the phosphorus bound NHV groups are in trans-position to each other. DFT calculations provide insight into the E/Z-isomerisation and stereoselective formation of Au(i) complexes and cycloaddition products.

Radio- and Photosensitizing Os(II)-Based Nanocage for Combined Radio-/Chemo-/X-ray-Induced Photodynamic Therapies, NIR Imaging, and Drug Delivery

Integration of clinical imaging and collaborative multimodal therapies into a single nanomaterial for multipurpose diagnosis and treatment is of great interest to theranostic nanomedicine. Here, we report a rational design of a discrete Os-based metal-organic nanocage Pd6(OsL3)828+ (MOC-43) as a versatile theranostic nanoplatform to meet the following demands simultaneously: (1) synergistic treatments of radio-, chemo-, and X-ray-induced photodynamic therapies (X-PDT) for breast cancer, (2) NIR imaging for cancer cell tracking and tumor-targeting, and (3) anticancer drug transport through a host-guest strategy. The nanoscale MOC-43 incorporates high-Z Os-element to interact with X-ray irradiation for dual radiosensitization and photosensitization, showing efficient energy transfer to endogenous oxygen in cancer cells to enhance X-PDT efficacy. It also features intrinsic NIR emission originating from metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) as an excellent imaging probe. Meanwhile, its 12 pockets can capture and concentrate low-water-soluble molecules for anticancer drug delivery. These multifunctions are implemented and demonstrated by micellization of coumarin-loaded cages with DSPE-PEG2000 into coumarin ⊂ MOC-43 nanoparticles (CMNPs) for efficient subcellular endocytosis and uptake. The cancer treatments in vitro/in vivo show promising antitumor performance, providing a conceptual protocol to combine cage-cargo drug transport with diagnosis and treatment for collaborative cancer theranostics by virtue of multifunction synergism on a single-nanomaterial platform.

One/Two-Photon-Excited ESIPT-Attributed Coordination Polymers with Wide Temperature Range and Color-Tunable Long Persistent Luminescence

The multiple metastable excited states provided by excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) molecules are beneficial to bring temperature-dependent and color-tunable long persistent luminescence (LPL). Meanwhile, ESIPT molecules are intrinsically suitable to be modulated as D-π-A structure to obtain both one/two-photon excitation and LPL emission simultaneously. Herein, we report the rational design of a dynamic CdII coordination polymer (LIFM-106) from ESIPT ligand to achieve the above goals. By comparing LIFM-106 with the counterparts, we established a temperature-regulated competitive relationship between singlet excimer and triplet LPL emission. The optimization of ligand aggregation mode effectively boost the competitiveness of the latter. In result, LIFM-106 shows outstanding one/two-photon excited LPL performance with wide temperature range (100-380 K) and tunable color (green to red). The multichannel radiation process was further elucidated by transient absorption and theoretical calculations, benefiting for the application in anti-counterfeiting systems.

Synergistic Modulation of Electronic Interaction to Enhance Intrinsic Activity and Conductivity of Fe-Co-Ni Hydroxide Nanotube for Highly Efficient Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalyst

The large-scale hydrogen production and application through electrocatalytic water splitting depends crucially on the development of highly efficient, cost-effective electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which, however, remains challenging. Here, a new electrocatalyst of trimetallic Fe-Co-Ni hydroxide (denoted as FeCoNiOx Hy ) with a nanotubular structure is developed through an enhanced Kirkendall process under applied potential. The FeCoNiOx Hy features synergistic electronic interaction between Fe, Co, and Ni, which not only notably increases the intrinsic OER activity of FeCoNiOx Hy by facilitating the formation of *OOH intermediate, but also substantially improves the intrinsic conductivity of FeCoNiOx Hy to facilitate charge transfer and activate catalytic sites through electrocatalyst by promoting the formation of abundant Co3+ . Therefore, FeCoNiOx Hy delivers remarkably accelerated OER kinetics and superior apparent activity, indicated by an ultra-low overpotential potential of 257 mV at a high current density of 200 mA cm-2 . This work is of fundamental and practical significance for synergistic catalysis related to advanced energy conversion materials and technologies.

Trinuclear Re(I)-Coordinated Organic Cage as the Supramolecular Photocatalyst for Visible-Light-Driven CO2 Reduction

Photocatalytic reduction of excess CO₂ in the atmosphere to value-added chemicals by visible light can be an effective solution to fuel shortage and global warming. Considering these issues, we designed and successfully synthesized a trinuclear Re(I)-coordinated organic cage (Re-C₄^R) as the supramolecular photocatalyst. Photophysical, electrochemical properties, and photocatalytic performance comparison of Re-C₄^R and its mononuclear analogue Re-bpy are discussed in detail. Notably, the covalent linkage of three Re(I) subunits in Re-C₄^R leads to TON_CO = 691 (per Re(I) site in 4 h) more than three times as much as TON_CO = 208 of Re-bpy. Compared to Re-bpy, higher current enhancement in the control CV experiments under CO₂ was observed for Re-C₄^R. CO₂ adsorption process can be promoted because of the cryptand structure and multiple amine groups of Re-C₄^R. Moreover, decay lifetimes of Re-C₄^R are shorter than those of Re-bpy in the ultrafast transient absorption (TA) and photoluminescence (PL) decay spectra, indicating that the trinuclear cryptate structure of Re-C₄^R could facilitate electron transfer efficiency during CO₂ reduction.

Scalable and Depurative Zirconium Metal-Organic Framework for Deep Flue-Gas Desulfurization and SO2 Recovery

Deep SO₂ removal and recovery as industrial feedstock are of importance in flue-gas desulfurization and natural-gas purification, yet developing low-cost and scalable physisorbents with high efficiency and recyclability remains a challenge. Herein, we develop a viable synthetic protocol to produce DUT-67 with a controllable MOF structure, excellent crystallinity, adjustable shape/size, milli-to-kilogram scale, and consecutive production by recycling the solvent/modulator. Furthermore, simple HCl post-treatment affords depurated DUT-67-HCl featuring ultrahigh purity, excellent chemical stability, fully reversible SO₂ uptake, high separation selectivity (SO₂/CO₂ and SO₂/N₂), greatly enhanced SO₂ capture capacity, and good reusability. The SO₂ binding mechanism has been elucidated by in situ X-ray diffraction/infrared spectroscopy and DFT/GCMC calculations. The single-step SO₂ separation from a real quaternary N₂/CO₂/O₂/SO₂ flue gas containing trace SO₂ is implementable under dry and 50% humid conditions, thus recovering 96% purity. This work may pave the way for future SO₂ capture-and-recovery technology by pushing MOF syntheses toward economic cost, scale-up production, and improved physiochemical properties.

Elaborating E/Z-Geometry of Alkenes via Cage-Confined Arylation Catalysis of Terminal Olefins

A visible light photosensitizing metal-organic cage is applied as an artificial supramolecular reactor to control the reaction of aryl radicals with terminal olefins under green light/solvent conditions, which facilitates selective transformation in the confined enzyme-mimicking environment to give a series of geometrically defined E/Z-alkenes. The hydrophobic cage displays good host-guest inclusion with aromatic substrates, promoting Meerwein arylation and protecting E-isomeric products during reaction; while a small amount of benzonitrile can turn on efficient E→Z isomerization. Besides π-π stacking, the hydrogen bonding and halogen bonding interactions also act as control forces for the arylation of aliphatic terminal olefins known as poor acceptors in classic Meerwein arylation. The application of this switchable cage-confined arylation catalysis has been demonstrated by the syntheses of Tapinarof and a marine natural product from the same substrate via controllable E/Z selectivity.

Epitaxially grown silicon-based single-atom catalyst for visible-light-driven syngas production

Improving the dispersion of active sites simultaneous with the efficient harvest of photons is a key priority for photocatalysis. Crystalline silicon is abundant on Earth and has a suitable bandgap. However, silicon-based photocatalysts combined with metal elements has proved challenging due to silicon's rigid crystal structure and high formation energy. Here we report a solid-state chemistry that produces crystalline silicon with well-dispersed Co atoms. Isolated Co sites in silicon are obtained through the in-situ formation of CoSi₂ intermediate nanodomains that function as seeds, leading to the production of Co-incorporating silicon nanocrystals at the CoSi₂/Si epitaxial interface. As a result, cobalt-on-silicon single-atom catalysts achieve an external quantum efficiency of 10% for CO₂-to-syngas conversion, with CO and H₂ yields of 4.7 mol g_(Co)^-1 and 4.4 mol g_(Co)^-1, respectively. Moreover, the H₂/CO ratio is tunable between 0.8 and 2. This photocatalyst also achieves a corresponding turnover number of 2 × 10⁴ for visible-light-driven CO₂ reduction over 6 h, which is over ten times higher than previously reported single-atom photocatalysts.

Interplay of Dual-Proton Transfer Relay to Achieve Full-Color Panel Luminescence in Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer (ESIPT) Fluorophores

A new design was applied for the facile synthesis of pure organic photoluminescent molecules with dual excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) sites. In this novel class of emitters, full-color panel emission from blue, green, and yellow to red, including white light, can be achieved in different solvents as modulated by the enol-keto(1st)-keto(2nd) tautomer emissions. A comprehensive transient photophysical study verifies that keto(1st) and keto(2nd) have a precursor (<0.8 ps)-successor (∼20 ps)-relayed absorbance relationship, and then a fast equilibrium between the two is established, resulting in dual emissions in the nanosecond scale (∼1900 ps). Through the research on copper ions' selective PL response, the dual-ESIPT mechanism was further verified; in addition, the study of solid-state PL changes upon the stimulus of organic vapor manifests the potential application sensitivity of the molecules as dual-ESIPT sensors. Theoretical results including reaction potential energy surface analyses manifest the fact that dual-proton transfer goes along a sequential route with a smaller energy barrier, firmly supporting the experimental results. An intrinsic system that undergoes intramolecular double proton relayed transfer is thus established for the achievement of much broadened optical responses and full-color display, providing reference for the design and application of advanced dual-ESIPT optical materials.

Engineering Single-Atom Sites into Pore-Confined Nanospaces of Porphyrinic Metal-Organic Frameworks for the Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

As a type of heterogeneous catalyst expected for the maximum atom efficiency, a series of single-atom catalysts (SACs) containing spatially isolated metal single atoms (M-SAs) have been successfully prepared by confining M-SAs in the pore-nanospaces of porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The prepared MOF composites of M-SAs@Pd-PCN-222-NH₂ (M = Pt, Ir, Au, and Ru) display exceptionally high and persistent efficiency in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction with a turnover number (TON) of up to 21713 in 32 h and a beginning/lasting turnover frequency (TOF) larger than 1200/600 h^-1 based on M-SAs under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm). The photo-/electrochemical property studies and density functional theory calculations disclose that the close proximity of the catalytically active Pt-SAs to the Pd-porphyrin photosensitizers with the confinement and stabilization effect by chemical binding could accelerate electron-hole separation and charge transfer in pore-nanospaces, thus promoting the catalytic H₂ evolution reaction with lasting effectiveness.

MIL-101-Cr/Fe/Fe-NH2 for Efficient Separation of CH4 and C3H8 from Simulated Natural Gas

Adsorptive separation based on porous solid adsorbents has emerged as an excellent effective alternative to energy-intensive conventional separation methods in a low energy cost and high working capacity manner. However, there are few stable mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for efficient purification of methane from other light hydrocarbons in natural gas. Herein, we report a series of stable mesoporous MOFs, MIL-101-Cr/Fe/Fe-NH2, for efficient separation of CH4 and C3H8 from a ternary mixture CH4/C2H6/C3H8. Experimental results show that all three MOFs possess excellent thermal, acid/basic, and hydrothermal stability. Single-component adsorption suggested that they have high C3H8 adsorption capacity and commendable selectivity for C3H8 and C2H6 over CH4. Transient breakthrough experiments further certified the ability of direct separation of CH4 from simulated natural gas and indirect recovery of C3H8 from the packing column. Theoretical calculations illustrated that the van der Waals force proportional to the molecular weight is the key factor and that the structural integrity and defect can impact separation performances.

Co-Fe-P Nanosheet Arrays as a Highly Synergistic and Efficient Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The rational design and synthesis of highly efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of critical importance to the large-scale production of hydrogen by water electrolysis. Here, we develop a bimetallic, synergistic, and highly efficient Co-Fe-P electrocatalyst for OER, by selecting a two-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF) of Co-ZIF-L as the precursor. The Co-Fe-P electrocatalyst features pronounced synergistic effects induced by notable electron transfer from Co to Fe, and a large electrochemical active surface area achieved by organizing the synergistic Co-Fe-P into hierarchical nanosheet arrays with disordered grain boundaries. Such features facilitate the generation of abundant and efficiently exposed Co³⁺ sites for electrocatalytic OER and thus enable Co-Fe-P to deliver excellent activity (overpotential and Tafel slope as low as 240 mV and 36 mV dec^-1, respectively, at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in 1.0 M KOH solution). The Co-Fe-P electrocatalyst also shows great durability by steadily working for up to 24 h. Our work thus provides new insight into the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts based on nanoscale and/or electronic structure engineering.

A Redox-Active Supramolecular Fe4L6 Cage Based on Organic Vertices with Acid-Base-Dependent Charge Tunability for Dehydrogenation Catalysis

Supramolecular cage chemistry is of lasting interest because, as artificial blueprints of natural enzymes, the self-assembled cage structures not only provide substrate-hosting biomimetic environments but also can integrate active sites in the confined nanospaces for function synergism. Herein, we demonstrate a vertex-directed organic-clip chelation assembly strategy to construct a metal-organic cage Fe₄L₆⁸⁺ (MOC-63) incorporating 12 imidazole proton donor-acceptor motifs and four redox-active Fe centers in an octahedral coordination nanospace. Different from regular supramolecular cages assembled with coordination metal vertices, MOC-63 comprises six ditopic organic-clip ligands as vertices and four tris-chelating Fe(N∩N)₃ moieties as faces, thus improving its acid, base, and redox robustness by virtue of cage-stabilized dynamics in solution. Improved dehydrogenation catalysis of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline derivatives is accomplished by MOC-63 owing to a supramolecular cage effect that synergizes multiple Fe centers and radical species to expedite intermediate conversion of the multistep reactions in a cage-confined nanospace. The acid-base buffering imidazole motifs play a vital role in modulating the total charge state to resist pH variation and tune the solubility among varied solvents, thereby enhancing reaction acceleration in acidic conditions and rendering a facile recycling catalytic process.

Thermally Activated Fluorescence vs Long Persistent Luminescence in ESIPT-Attributed Coordination Polymer

Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) molecules demonstrating specific enol-keto tautomerism and the related photoluminescence (PL) switch have wide applications in displaying, sensing, imaging, lasing, etc. However, an ESIPT-attributed coordination polymer showing alternative PL between thermally activated fluorescence (TAF) and long persistent luminescence (LPL) has never been explored. Herein, we report the assembly of a dynamic Cd(II) coordination polymer (LIFM-101) from the ESIPT-type ligand, HPI2C (5-(2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)isophthalic acid). For the first time, TAF and/or color-tuned LPL can be achieved by controlling the temperature under the guidance of ESIPT excited states. Noteworthily, the twisted structure of the HPI2C ligand in LIFM-101 achieves an effective mixture of the higher-energy excited states, leading to ISC (intersystem crossing)/RISC (reverse intersystem crossing) energy transfer between the high-lying keto-triplet state (T_n(K*)) and the first singlet state (S₁(K*)). Meanwhile, experimental and theoretical results manifest the occurrence probability and relevance among RISC, ISC, and internal conversion (IC) in this unique ESIPT-attributed coordination polymer, leading to the unprecedented TAF/LPL switching mechanism, and paving the way for the future design and application of advanced optical materials.

High Water Adsorption MOFs with Optimized Pore-Nanospaces for Autonomous Indoor Humidity Control and Pollutants Removal

The indoor air quality is of prime importance for human daily life and health, for which the adsorbents like zeolites and silica-gels are widely used for air dehumidification and harmful gases capture. Herein, we develop a pore-nanospace post-engineering strategy to optimize the hydrophilicity, water-uptake capacity and air-purifying ability of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with long-term stability, offering an ideal candidate with autonomous multi-functionality of moisture control and pollutants sequestration. Through variant tuning of organic-linkers carrying hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups in the pore-nanospaces of prototypical UiO-67, a moderately hydrophilic MOF (UiO-67-4Me-NH₂ -38 %) with high thermal, hydrolytic and acid-base stability is screened out, featuring S-shaped water sorption isotherms exactly located in the recommended comfortable and healthy ranges of relative humidity for indoor ventilation (45 %-65 % RH) and adverse health effects minimization (40-60 % RH). Its exceptional attributes of water-uptake working capacity/efficiency, contaminants removal, recyclability and regeneration promise a great potential in confined indoor environment application.

Creating Dynamic Nanospaces in Solution by Cationic Cages as Multirole Catalytic Platform for Unconventional C(sp)-H Activation Beyond Enzyme Mimics

Herein we demonstrate that, based on the creation of dynamic nanospaces in solution by highly charged positive coordination cage of [Pd₆ (RuL₃ )₈ ]²⁸⁺ , multirole and multi-way cage-confined catalysis is accomplishable for versatile functions and anomalous reactivities with the aid of the biomimetic cage effect. The high cationic-host charges drive partial deprotonation of 24 imidazole-NHs on cage sphere alike imidazole-residuals in proteins, generating amphoteric heterogeneity in solution to enforce effective cavity-basicity against solution-acidity. Synergistic actions arisen from cage hydrophobicity, host-guest electrostatic interactions and imidazole-N coordination facilitate C(sp)-H activation and carbanionic intermediate stabilization of terminal alkynes to achieve unusual H/D-exchange and Glaser coupling under acidic conditions, and enable phase transfers of water-insoluble substrates/products/co-catalysts to make immiscible-phase and bi-phase catalysis feasible, thus providing a useful catalytic protocol to combine merits from homogeneous, heterogeneous, enzymatic and phase transfer catalysis.

Charge State of Au25(SG)18 Nanoclusters Induced by Interaction with a Metal Organic Framework Support and Its Effect on Catalytic Performance

We investigated the charge transfer between Au₂₅(SG)₁₈ nanoclusters and metal-organic framework (MOF) supports including Mil-101-Cr, Mil-125-Ti, and ZIF-8 by an X-ray photoemission technique and discussed the influence of resulted charge states of supported Au₂₅(SG)₁₈ nanoclusters on the 4-nitrophenol reduction reaction. Charge transfer from Au₂₅(SG)₁₈ to Mil-101-Cr induces positive charge Au^δ+ (0 < δ < 1) while charge transfer from ZIF-8 to Au₂₅(SG)₁₈ generates negative charge Au^δ- due to different metal-support interactions. Au₂₅(SG)₁₈ on Mil-125 shows metallic Au⁰, similar to unsupported Au₂₅(SG)₁₈, due to negligible charge transfer. The resulted charge state of Au^δ- inhibits the formation of adsorbed hydride (H^-) species because of electrostatic repulsion, while Au^δ+ impairs the reductive ability of adsorbed hydride (H^-) species due to strong affinity between them. In comparison, metallic Au⁰ in Au₂₅(SG)₁₈/Mil-125 and unsupported Au₂₅(SG)₁₈ presents the optimum catalytic activity. The current work provides guidelines to design effective metal nanoclusters in heterogeneous catalysis through metal-support interaction exerted by metal-oxo/nitric clusters within MOFs.

Acidic open-cage solution containing basic cage-confined nanospaces for multipurpose catalysis

The nanoscale chemical spaces inherent in porous organic/coordination cages or solid/liquid materials have been continuously explored for their nanoconfinement effect on selective adsorption and reaction of small gas or organic molecules. Herein, we aim to rationalize the unconventional chemical reactivities motivated by the cage-confined nanospaces in aqueous solutions, where the robust yet permeable nanospaces defined by the open cages facilitate dynamic guest exchange and unusual chemical reactions. The high positive charges on [(Pd/Pt)₆(RuL₃)₈]²⁸⁺ nanocages drive imidazole–proton equilibrium to display a significantly perturbed pK_a shift, creating cage-defined nanospaces in solution with distinct intrinsic basicity and extrinsic acidity. The supramolecular cage effect plays pivotal roles in elaborating robust solution nanospaces, controlling ingress-and-egress molecular processes through open-cage portals and endowing nanocages with transition-state stabilization, amphoteric reactivities and the phase transfer of insoluble molecules, thus promoting chemical transformations in unconventional ways. Consequently, a wide range of application of cage-confined catalysis with anomalous reactivities may be expected based on this kind of open-cage solution medium, which combines cage nanocavity, solution heterogeneity and liquid-phase fluidity to benefit various potential mass transfer and molecular process options.

Reversible Stereoisomerization of 1,3-Diphosphetane Frameworks Revealed by a Single-Electron Redox Approach

The discovery of pyramidal inversion has continued to impact modern organic and organometallic chemistry. Sequential alkylation reactions of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligated dicarbondiphosphide 1 with RI (R = Me, Et, or iBu) and ZnMe₂ give rise to the highly stereoselective synthesis of cis-1,3-diphosphetanes 3. cis-3 is conformationally favorable at room temperature, whereas inversion to trans-3 is observed at 110 °C. One-electron oxidation of cis-3 with Fc⁺(BAr^F) (Fc = [Fe(C₅H₅)₂]; BAr^F = [B(3,5-(CF₃)₂C₆H₃)₄)]^-) leads to the stereoselective formation of trans-1,3-diphosphetane radical cation salts 3^•+(BAr^F), which can be reversibly transformed to cis-3 upon one-electron reduction. Salts 3^•+(BAr^F) represent the first examples of 1,3-diphosphetane radical cations. These results provide a potential application of planar four-membered heterocycle-based building blocks for electrically fueled molecular switches.

Iron(II), Cobalt(II), and Nickel(II) Complexes of Bis(sulfonamido)benzenes: Redox Properties, Large Zero-Field Splittings, and Single-Ion Magnets

Metal complexes of 1,2-diamidobenzenes have been long studied because of their intriguing redox properties and electronic structures. We present here a series of such complexes with 1,2-bis(sulfonamido)benzene ligands to probe the utility of these ligands for generating a large zero-field splitting (ZFS, D) in metal complexes that possibly act as single-ion magnets. To this end, we have synthesized a series of homoleptic ate complexes of the form (X)_n[M{bis(sulfonamido)benzene}₂] (n equals 4 minus the oxidation state of the metal), where M (Fe/Co/Ni), X [K⁺/(K-18-c-6)⁺/(HNEt₃)⁺, with 18-c-6 = 18-crown ether 6], and the substituents (methyl and tolyl) on the ligand [bmsab = 1,2-bis(methanesulfonamido)benzene; btsab = 1,2-bis(toluenesulfonamido)benzene] were varied to analyze their effect on the ZFS, possible single-ion-magnet properties, and redox behavior of these metal complexes. A combination of X-ray crystallography, (spectro)electrochemistry, superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry, high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to investigate the electronic/geometric structures of these complexes and the aforementioned properties. These investigations show that the cobalt(II) complexes display very high negative D values in the range of -100 to -130 cm^-1, and the nickel(II) complexes display very high positive D values of 76 and 58 cm^-1. In addition, the cobalt(II) complexes shows barriers of 200-260 cm^-1 and slow relaxation of the magnetization in the absence of an external magnetic field, underscoring the robustness of this class of complexes. The iron(II) complex exhibits a D value of -3.29 cm^-1 and can be chemically oxidized to an iron(III) complex that has D = -1.96 cm^-1. These findings clearly show that bis(sulfonamido)benzenes are ideally suited to stabilize ate complexes, to generate very high ZFSs at the metal centers with single-ion-magnet properties, and to induce exclusive oxidation at the metal center (for iron) despite the presence of ligands that are potentially noninnocent. Our results therefore substantially enhance the scope for this class of redox-active ligands.

Modulating electronic structure of metal-organic frameworks by introducing atomically dispersed Ru for efficient hydrogen evolution

Developing high-performance electrocatalysts toward hydrogen evolution reaction is important for clean and sustainable hydrogen energy, yet still challenging. Herein, we report a single-atom strategy to construct excellent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) hydrogen evolution reaction electrocatalyst (NiRu0.13-BDC) by introducing atomically dispersed Ru. Significantly, the obtained NiRu0.13-BDC exhibits outstanding hydrogen evolution activity in all pH, especially with a low overpotential of 36 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 1 M phosphate buffered saline solution, which is comparable to commercial Pt/C. X-ray absorption fine structures and the density functional theory calculations reveal that introducing Ru single-atom can modulate electronic structure of metal center in the MOF, leading to the optimization of binding strength for H2O and H*, and the enhancement of HER performance. This work establishes single-atom strategy as an efficient approach to modulate electronic structure of MOFs for catalyst design.

Multi-Mode Color-Tunable Long Persistent Luminescence in Single-Component Coordination Polymers

Materials with tunable long persistent luminescence (LPL) properties have wide applications in security signs, anti-counterfeiting, data encrypting, and other fields. However, the majority of reported tunable LPL materials are pure organic molecules or polymers. Herein, a series of metal-organic coordination polymers displaying color-tunable LPL were synthesized by the self-assembly of HTzPTpy ligand with different cadmium halides (X=Cl, Br, and I). In the solid state, their LPL emission colors can be tuned by the time-evolution, as well as excitation and temperature variation, realizing multi-mode dynamic color tuning from green to yellow or green to red, and are the first such examples in single-component coordination polymer materials. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and theoretical calculations reveal that the modification of LPL is due to the balanced action from single molecule and aggregate triplet excited states caused by an external heavy-atom effect. The results show that the rational introduction of different halide anions into coordination polymers can realize multi-color LPL.

One-/Two-Photon Excited Cell Membrane Imaging and Tracking by a Photoactive Nanocage

Cell membrane imaging by predesigned molecular and supramolecular photoluminescence probes is of great importance in understanding the nano-biointeractions for potential applications in cellular tracking, drug delivery, cancer diagnosis, and treatment. Herein, we report an effective strategy for cell membrane imaging in both living cell and tissue levels on the basis of a multifunctional nanocage (MOC-16) integrating one-/two-photon active phosphorescence, high charges, balanced hydrophobicity/lipophilicity, and proton sensitivity attributes. The intrinsic optical characters, including strong one-/two-photon excitation and pH-dependent red emission, make MOC-16 powerful optical probes for membrane imaging in living cell and tissue levels under both visible and near-infrared irradiations. Meanwhile, the highly positive charges of +28 endow MOC-16 with adequate water solubility and deprotonation ability while still maintaining its hydrophobicity, thus enabling balanced hydrophobic-lipophilic interactions at the nano-biointerface to facilitate a pH-dependent membrane absorption within the biological pH range of 5.3-7.4. However, the low-charged RuL₃ metalloligand or polyethylene glycol (PEG)-modified MOC-16^PEG with less hydrophobicity cannot offer enough nano-biointeractions for cell membrane tracking. These findings advance the fundamental understanding of nano-biointerface interactions of MOCs with cell membranes and provide further guidance in their biological applications.

Coordinative-to-covalent transformation, isomerization dynamics, and logic gate application of dithienylethene based photochromic cages

Photochromic coordinative cages containing dynamic C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> N imine bonds are assembled from a dithienylethene-based aldehyde and tris-amine precursors via metallo-component self-assembly. The resulting metal-templated cages are then reduced and demetalated into pure covalent-organic cages (COCs), which are otherwise difficult to prepare via de novo organic synthesis. Both the obtained coordinative and covalent cages can be readily interconverted between the ring-open (o-isomer) and one-lateral ring-closed (c-isomer) forms by UV/vis light irradiation, demonstrating distinct absorption, luminescence and photoisomerization dynamics. Specifically, the ring-closed c-COCs show a blue-shifted absorption band compared with analogous metal-templated cages, which can be applied in photoluminescence (PL) color-tuning of upconversion materials in different ways, showing potential for constructing multi-readout logic gate systems.

Metal-templated component self-assembly and then demetalation affords photochromic covalent organic cages applicable for upconversion PL-color tuning for logic gates.

Enhanced Long Persistent Luminescence by Multifold Interpenetration in Metal-Organic Frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with long persistent luminescence (LPL) have attracted widespread attention due to potential applications in displays, anticounterfeiting, and so on. However, MOFs often have large pore size, which restricts the formation of efficient inter- and intramolecular interactions to realize LPL. Herein, a new approach to achieving LPL in MOFs by multifold interpenetration of discrete frameworks is reported. By comparison between threefold- and twofold-interpenetrating MOFs, it was found that the former, which have higher multiplicity and denser frameworks, can be endowed with enhanced inter- and intramolecular interactions, and thus enhanced LPL is obtained. Meanwhile, metal-cluster and heavy-halogen effects could also cause variations in LPL duration and color.

Well-distributed Pt-nanoparticles within confined coordination interspaces of self-sensitized porphyrin metal-organic frameworks: synergistic effect boosting highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Effective conversion of solar energy into chemical energy by visible light represents a potential strategy for sustainable development. Among which, photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with a relatively small activation energy (1.23 eV, around 1000 nm light irradiation) is especially attractive. In this work, well-distributed platinum nanoparticles (Pt-NPs) with a width of about 3 nm have been successfully immobilized into the confined coordination interspaces of 3.7 nm diameter, which are facilitated by early transition metal Hf(iv)-based clusters of a self-sensitized palladium porphyrin metal-organic framework. Under visible light irradiation, the resultant Pt@Pd-PCN-222(Hf) (which is also denoted as Pt@Pd-PMOF-2(Hf)) displays superb photocatalytic activity, achieving an unprecedented maximum H2 evolution rate of 22 674 μmol g-1 h-1 with a turn-over number (TON) of 4131.2 in 32 h and the highest turn-over frequency (TOF) of 482.5 h-1 based on Pt-NPs. This photocatalyst can be recycled and reused for three successive runs without significant loss of catalytic activity. This effective strategy takes advantage of the synergetic effect between Pd-porphyrin photosensitizers and Pt-NP co-catalysts confined within nanoscale coordination interspaces incorporating hydrophilic Hf(iv)-oxo clusters.

Unusual adsorption behaviours and responsive structural dynamics via selective gate effects of an hourglass porous metal-organic framework

An hourglass porous metal–organic framework, LIFM-12, constructed on a T-shaped flexible ligand with Cu²⁺ paddle-wheel clusters, shows temperature and gas adsorption responsive structural dynamics upon reversible molecular guest binding. Temperature-dependent single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction experiments show that the open gate status of the framework with adaptive behaviours facilitates kinetic diffusion of gas molecules resulting in the sequential filling of pores of different sizes, thus creating a breathing behaviour reminiscent of the observation of several steps in adsorption isotherms. In addition, adsorption studies revealed that LIFM-12 performs exceptional adsorption selectivity of 10–25 for CO₂versus light gases N₂, CH₄, and CO and up to 200 for C₃H₆versus CH₄.

A Cu²⁺ based metal–organic framework exhibits dynamic behaviour upon guest inclusion/release process, and performing stepwise sorption isotherms for various gas. We elucidate detailed mechanisms under its exceptional sorption behavior.

Missing-linker metal-organic frameworks for oxygen evolution reaction

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recognized as compelling platforms for the development of miscellaneous applications because of their structural diversity and functional tunability. Here, we propose that the electrocatalytic properties could be well modified by incorporating missing linkers into the MOF. Theoretical calculations suggest the electronic structure of MOFs can be tuned by introducing missing linkers, which improves oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of the MOF. Inspired by these aspects, we introduced various missing linkers into a layered-pillared MOF Co₂(OH)₂(C₈H₄O₄) (termed as CoBDC) to prepare missing-linker MOFs. Transmission electron microscope and synchrotron X-ray measurements confirmed that the missing linkers in the MOF could be introduced and well controlled by our strategy. The self-supported MOF nanoarrays with missing linkers of carboxyferrocene exhibit excellent OER performance with ultralow overpotential of 241 mV at 100 mA cm⁻². This work opens a new prospect to develop efficient MOF-based electrocatalysts by introducing missing linkers.

While water splitting electrocatalysis provides a means to store electrical energy as fuel, the water oxidation catalysts typically show low performances. Here, authors employ metal-organic frameworks with missing-linkers as highly active oxygen evolution electrocatalysts.
