On the nature of short-term memory encoding by the deaf

The associative learning of the deaf: The effects of word imagery and signability

In two experiments, deaf and hearing subjects learned paired associate lists in which rated visual imagery and signability (a measure of the ease with which a word can be represented as a gestural sign) were orthogonally varied. Visual presentation of three alternating study-recall trials resulted in significant positive effects of imagery for both deaf and hearing subjects, whereas signability facilitated recall only for deaf subjects. Examination of the relation between item attributes and reported learning strategy indicated that both deaf and hearing subjects used imaginal mediators more frequently for high-imagery than low-imagery pairs. A gestural sign strategy was reported almost exclusively by deaf subjects, particularly for high-signability pairs. These results suggest that an examination of the effects of sign language variables will contribute to an understanding of the qualitative differences in the associative learning of the deaf and hearing.

Orthographic structure and deaf spelling errors: syllables, letter frequency, and speech

Syllable structure influences hearing students' reading and spelling (e.g., Badecker, 1996; Caramazza & Miceli, 1990; Prinzmetal, Treiman, & Rho, 1986; Rapp, 1992; Treiman & Zukowski, 1988). This may seem unsurprising since hearers closely associate written and spoken words. We analysed a corpus of spelling errors made by deaf students. They would have learned English orthography with an attenuated experience of speech. We found that the majority of their errors were phonologically implausible but orthographically legal. A tendency to replace uncommon letter sequences with common sequences could not account for this pattern, nor could residual influence from speech. Since syllabically defined constraints are required to keep sequences orthographically legal, the deaf data are marked by an influence of syllable structure. Two main conclusions follow: (1) Our results contribute to evidence that abstract constraints, not derived from peripheral speech or hearing mechanisms, govern the organization of linguistic knowledge; and (2) statistical redundancy could not explain the deaf results. It does not offer a general alternative to suprasegmental structure.

Recall of order information by deaf signers: phonetic coding in temporal order recall

To examine the claim that phonetic coding plays a special role in temporal order recall, deaf and hearing college students were tested on their recall of temporal and spatial order information at two delay intervals. The deaf subjects were all native signers of American Sign Language. The results indicated that both the deaf and hearing subjects used phonetic coding in short-term temporal recall, and visual coding in spatial recall. There was no evidence of manual or visual coding among either the hearing or the deaf subjects in the temporal order recall task. The use of phonetic coding for temporal recall is consistent with the hypothesis that recall of temporal order information is facilitated by a phonetic code.

Role of vocal labeling in memory for object arrangements by deaf and hearing children

To determine the effects of vocal labels in memory using an object arrangement task 60 deaf and 30 hearing Ss were divided into two MA levels, primary and intermediate. Within each level, Ss were assigned to treatment, defined as employing vocal labels. Six groups of 15 Ss each were formed. When the groups were viewed by level, there were significant differences between primary and intermediate Ss. Vocal labels, with some notable exceptions, had little or no facilitating effects on performance of object recall. The results suggested that the availability of additional modes of mediation accounted for differences between the primary and intermediate levels. Data from the object-arrangement task provided implications for further study of conceptual behavior of deaf children.
