Abstract
Sirtuins are a family of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD)+-dependent histone deacetylases, comprising seven members SIRT1-SIRT7. Sirtuins have been extensively studied in regulating ageing and age-related diseases. Sirtuins are also pivotal modulators in oxidative stress and inflammation, as they can regulate the expression and activation of downstream transcriptional factors (such as Forkhead box protein O3 (FOXO3a), nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB)) as well as antioxidant enzymes, through epigenetic modification and post-translational modification. Most importantly, studies have shown that aberrant sirtuins are involved in the pathogenesis of infectious and inflammatory oral diseases, and oral cancer. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the regulatory patterns of sirtuins at multiple levels, and the essential roles of sirtuins in regulating inflammation, oxidative stress, and bone metabolism. We summarize the involvement of sirtuins in several oral diseases such as periodontitis, apical periodontitis, pulpitis, oral candidiasis, oral herpesvirus infections, dental fluorosis, and oral cancer. At last, we discuss the potential utilization of sirtuins as therapeutic targets in oral diseases.

Abstract
Objectives The epidemiologic distribution of non-albicans species in the oral cavity of oral lichen planus (OLP) patients remains uncertain. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify factors associated with the presence of C. dubliniensis and other non-albicans species. Furthermore, independent risk factors for Candida superinfection in OLP should be identified. Material and methods Epidemiologic data and microbiological findings from 268 symptomatic OLP patients who underwent continuous oral swab culture over a 5-year period (2015–2019) were retrospectively reviewed. Candida species identification and semi-quantification were obtained by culture on CHROMagar Candida, followed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Results C. albicans was the most frequently isolated species (72.3%), followed by C. glabrata (7.3%), C. dubliniensis (5.8%), C. krusei and C. parapsilosis (both 2.6%). The presence of C. dubliniensis was significantly associated with tobacco smoking. Other non-albicans spp. were significantly more often detected in patients using removable dentures. Increasing age and the intake of psychotropic drugs were identified as independent risk factors of Candida superinfection in OLP. Conclusion In OLP patients, certain local and systemic factors increase the risk of carrying potentially drug-resistant Candida species and the development of Candida superinfection of OLP lesions. Clinical relevance Due to the frequent detection of non-albicans species in OLP, resistance or at least reduced sensitivity to azole antifungals should be expected, especially in smokers and patients using removable dentures. In the case of oral complaints, a superinfection with Candida should be considered, whereby older patients and patients taking psychotropic drugs have an increased risk for oral infection with Candida.

Abstract
Candidiasis is a common opportunistic infection caused by fungi of the Candida genus that affects mainly mucocutaneous tissues (e.g., vaginal, oral, and mammary). This condition has been known for a long time; thus, innumerous topical and systemic treatments are already available on the market worldwide. Yet, recurrent superficial candidiasis (RSC) is an expected outcome, still lacking effective and convenient treatments. Although several individual conditions may contribute to disease recurrence, biofilms' presence seems to be the main etiological factor contributing to antifungal resistance. More than proposing novel antifungal agents, current research seems to be focusing on improving the pharmaceutical technology aspects of formulations to address such a challenge. These include extending and improving intimate contact of drug delivery systems with the mucocutaneous tissues, increasing drug loading dose, and enhancing topical drug permeation. This review discusses the current understanding of the RSC and the use of pharmaceutical technology tools in obtaining better results. Even though several drawbacks of conventional formulations have been circumvented with the help of nano- or microencapsulation techniques and with the use of mucoadhesive formulation excipients, many challenges remain. In particular, the need to mask the unpalatable taste of formulations for the treatment of oral candidiasis, and the necessity of formulations with a "dryer" sensorial feeling and improved performances in providing higher bioavailability for the treatment of mammary and vaginal candidiasis.

Background: Fungal infections are a health issue paradoxically fuelled by the developments in medical care. Objectives: Our study is an investigation on the correlation between the infection site and the genotypes of Candida albicans strains isolated from Romanian patients. Methods: A total number of 301 isolates from different clinical sites were investigated in terms of genotype determination. Results: The isolates were clustered in three groups according to their genotype: 55.81% showed genotype A, 14.62% genotype B, and 29.57% genotype C. Conclusions: No significant correlation was found between the genotype and the infection site, but a significant correlation was found between genotype C and isolates from HIV patients proving that C. albicans pathogenicity probably relies on factors related to the host.

Abstract
Oral candidiasis (OC) is an infectious disease caused by microorganisms of the genus Candida, leading to lesions in the buccal cavity. Its treatment consists of the administration of topical or systemic antifungal agents, which may compromise the patient compliance due to its side effects, highlighting the need for alternative treatments. In this scenario, bullfrog oil, an animal oil composed of a pool of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, is introduced as a potential antifungal raw material. Thus, the aim of this work was to produce a mucoadhesive emulsified system able to deliver the bullfrog oil in the buccal cavity to treat the OC. The emulsion was produced and characterized by visual inspection, droplet size, polydispersity index (PdI), and zeta potential over the course of 60 days. In addition, its mucoadhesive ability was evaluated using an in vitro mucin model. The antifungal activity, evaluated by the broth microdilution assay and the biocompatibility, performed against human erythrocytes, were also carried out. The emulsion showed a droplet size of 320.79 ± 35.60 nm, a PdI of 0.49 ± 0.08, and a zeta potential of -38.53 ± 6.23 mV, with no significant changes over 60 days. The mucoadhesive properties of the system was improved by the use of pharmaceutical excipients. The antifungal activity showed that the bullfrog oil and the emulsion were able to inhibit the growth of different Candida species. Furthermore, the emulsion showed no significant hemolytic effect. Overall, the system showed suitable physicochemical characteristics and biocompatibility, with substantial in vitro antifungal activity, suggesting that this system can be further investigated for OC treatment.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: During the last two decades a major increase in the proportion of severe fungal infections has been noted due to the excessive use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, catheters, and a growing number of immunocompromised patients.
Objectives: This is the first investigation providing complete data regarding the phenotypic and genotypic profiles of Candida albicans (C. albicans) isolates in Romanian patients.
Methods: We investigated 301 isolates in terms of genotype determination (G), resistogram (R), phospholipase activity (Pl), haemolysis (Hl), proteinase activity (Pt), and biofilm formation (BF).
Results: The analyzed isolates of C. albicans showed low values for Pt (61.73%), Hl (95.49%), and BF (60.71%), and did not present any Pl activity (92.23%). More than half of the investigated samples were genotype A with 450 bp (52.92%) and the majority (86.19%) were resistant to sodium selenite (A), boric acid (B), sodium periodate (D) and silver nitrate (E), but sensitive to cetrimide (-). One-way ANOVA analysis revealed significant effects of the infection site on biofilm formation (p = 0.0137) and no significant correlation was found between the genotype (A, B, C) and the infection site (p =0.449).
Conclusions: Based on the obtained results it can be concluded that C. albicans isolates in Romanian patients exhibit different genotypic and phenotypic patterns, and no significant correlations between genotype and infection site could be observed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interest in the association between oral cancer risk and Candida-associated promotion of mucosal dysplasia continues. However, little is known of the presence and amount of oral yeast in the mouths of healthy patients without mucosal lesions. The purpose of this prospective cross-sectional clinical study was to ascertain the prevalence and degree of carriage of Candida in the oral cavities of a non-cancer population, with reference to a range of parameters affecting the oral environment. METHODS Oral rinse samples were collected from a sample of 203 patients attending the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne and analysed for the presence and degree of colonization of yeast species that were phenotypically identified as albicans and non-albicans species. RESULTS Oral yeast carriage was found in 98/203 patients (48.3%), and of these, 83 (84.7%) patients carried C. albicans. There was no statistical difference in carriage when comparing gender, age, or presence of a removable prosthesis. CONCLUSIONS Both smoking and the presence of active carious lesions were found to be positively correlated with the carriage of oral Candida. Individuals who are current smokers are nearly seven times more likely to have oral Candida, and participants with high candidal colonization are more likely to be current smokers. Participants with active carious lesions were also more likely to carry oral Candida.

Abstract
Candida albicans is strongly associated with severe early childhood caries (S-ECC). However, the roles of secreted aspartyl proteinases (Saps), an important virulence factor of C. albicans, in the progress of S-ECC are not clear. In our study, the Saps activities were evaluated by the yeast nitrogen base–bovine serum albumi (YNB–BSA) agar plate method and by the MTT method with bovine serum albumin (BSA) as the substrate. Genotypes of C. albicans and gene expression of Sap1–5 were evaluated. The relationships of Saps activities and genotypes with S-ECC were analyzed. The results showed that enzyme activities of Saps in the S-ECC group were significantly higher than those in the caries free (CF) group (p < 0.05). Genotypes A, B and C were detected in the S-ECC group, and genotypes A and C were detected in the CF group. In the genotype A group, Saps activity in the S-ECC group was significantly different from that in the CF group (p < 0.05). The gene expression level of Sap1 in the S-ECC group was significantly higher than that in the CF group (p = 0.001), while Sap4 expression was significantly lower than that in the CF group (p = 0.029). It can be concluded that Sap1–5 are the predominant proteinase genes expressed in C. albicans from dental biofilm and Sap1 may play an important role in the development of S-ECC.

Abstract
SUMMARY Introduction: The majority of nosocomial fungal infections are caused
by Candida spp. where C. albicans is the species
most commonly identified. Molecular methods are important tools for assessing the
origin of the yeasts isolated in hospitals. Methods: This is a study on the genetic profifiles of 39 nosocomial
clinical isolates of C. albicans using two typing methods: random
amplifified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and microsatellite, two different primers for
each technique were used. Results: RAPD provided 10 and 11 different profiles with values for
SAB of 0.84 ± 0.126 and 0.88 ± 0.08 for primers M2 and P4, respectively.
Microsatellite using two markers, CDC3 and HIS3, allowed the observation of six
and seven different alleles, respectively, with combined discriminatory power of
0.91. Conclusions: Although genetic variability is clear, it was possible
to identify high similarity, suggesting a common origin for at least a part of
isolates. It is important to emphasize that common origin was proven from yeasts
isolated from colonization (urine, catheter or endotracheal secretions) and blood
culture from the same patient, indicating that the candidemia must have started
from a site of colonization. The combination of RAPD and microsatellite provides a
quick and efficient analysis for investigation of similarity among nosocomial
isolates of C. albicans.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Candida albicans is the most common fungal pathogen in humans, but other Candida species cause candidosis. Candida species display significant differences in their susceptibility to antimycotic drugs. Patients with symptomatic or erythematous oral lichen planus (OLP) commonly have Candida infection requiring correct identification of Candida species in order to initiate adequate antimycotic therapy. Therefore, conventional cytosmear and culture tests were compared with genetic diagnostics on oral rinse followed by agar culture and material collected by cytobrush from OLP patient mucosal lesion. METHODS The genetic approach was validated on a reference panel of 60 well-defined unrelated fungal species. The study included 37 OLP patients. Oral candidosis (OC) was established based on clinical signs of OC and/or oral mucosal symptoms and at least one hypha in lesional cytosmear. Antimycotic treatment was initiated after OC diagnosis, and symptomatic treatment was initiated in no-candidosis situations. RESULTS The composition of Candida species in oral rinse/culture test was different from that of lesional cytobrush sampling as more non-albicans species were detected by the latter. Unexpectedly, Candida dubliniensis was found to be overrepresented among patients with a history of antimycotic treatment indicating unintentional iatrogen selection. Of the 22 OLP patients receiving treatment, 27% of these should have been offered alternative therapy based on the improved diagnostic approach. CONCLUSION This study highlights the importance of lesional sampling in OLP patients with suspected OC. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Correct fungal identification is critical in order to initiate adequate antimycotic therapy, thus minimizing iatrogen selection of non-albicans species.

Abstract
Oral candidosis is the most common fungal infection encountered in general dental practice. It manifests in a variety of clinical presentations which may mimic more sinister diseases, and can occasionally be refractory to treatment requiring the attention of an oral medicine specialist. Management of oral candidosis should always include a thorough investigation of underlying predisposing conditions, as the disease often presents when the patient is systemically compromised. This update highlights the pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and management strategies of oral Candidal lesions commonly encountered in dental practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Candidal colonization in diabetics is a matter of debate. The aim of this study is to investigate oral candidal colonization, strain diversity, antifungal susceptibility, and the influence of local and systemic host factors on candidal colonization in adult diabetics. METHODS We conducted a case-control study that compared 150 diabetics (49 type 1, 101 type 2) with 50 healthy controls. Two salivary samples were collected, using the oral rinse sampling method: one for salivary flow rate and pH determination, and the other for candidal colonization assessment. The candidal isolates were identified and tested in vitro for antifungal susceptibility using the commercial kit, Candifast. The relationship between specific host factors and candidal colonization was also investigated. RESULTS Diabetics had a higher candidal carriage rate compared to controls, but not density. Candida albicans was the most frequently isolated species, but diabetics had a variety of other candidal species present. None of the control samples were resistant to any tested antifungal, while the diabetic samples had differing resistances to azole antifungals. Although there was a significant positive correlation between glycemic control and candidal colonization in type 2 diabetics, there was a negative correlation between salivary pH and candidal carriage in the controls versus density in type 2 diabetics. CONCLUSIONS Diabetic patients not only had a higher candidal carriage rate, but also a variety of candidal species that were resistant to azole antifungals. Oral candidal colonization was significantly associated with glycemic control, type of diabetes, and salivary pH.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to investigate the oral colonization profile of Candida albicans strains isolated from diabetic patients and their non-diabetic consorts. In addition hydrolytic enzyme activity of these isolates was analysed. METHODS The genetic diversity of C. albicans oral isolates from 52 couples was established using isoenzyme marker and cluster analysis. Hydrolytic enzyme characteristics, namely secreted aspartyl proteinases (SAPs) and phospholipases (PLs) were also analysed. RESULTS Simultaneous colonization by C. albicans was observed in the consorts of 12 couples (23.1%). Patterns of monoclonal and polyclonal oral colonization by C. albicans strains were identified and the coexistence of identical or highly related strains was observed in both members of eight couples. The genetic diversity observed in the total yeast population revealed four large, genetically distinct groups (A to D) and the coexistence of strains in couples or consorts conjugally unrelated. SAP and PL activity was observed in the majority of C. albicans isolates without any association to particular strain, strain clusters (highly related isolates), or clinical characteristics of the consorts (diabetic, non-diabetic, and gender). CONCLUSION Possible sources of transmission and oral propagation of groups (clusters) of strains of C. albicans can occur between diabetic and non-diabetic consorts. A conjugal genotypic identity exists in most C. albicans-positive couples, that is, both consorts share identical or highly related strains; however, this identity is not couple-specific as seen by the coexistence of clusters in couples and unrelated consorts.

Abstract
The molecular epidemiology of Candida dubliniensis has been studied using large complex DNA probes for Southern analysis and has revealed the existence of distinct genotypes within this species. The aim of the present study was to utilize a PCR-based analysis of molecular co-dominant markers to assess the relatedness of a global and temporally diverse collection of well characterized isolates of C. dubliniensis. Sixty-two C. dubliniensis strains were collected from the authors of previously published studies. Co-dominant PCR-based markers utilizing five separate PCR fingerprints were obtained in the present investigation. Phylogenetic and statistical analyses utilizing permutation tests were undertaken to assess correlations amongst the isolates. Three distinct PCR-groups were observed and there was evidence that strains isolated since 1990 were genotypically more similar to each other than they were to strains recovered prior to 1990.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Mucosal surfaces are the primary oral reservoirs of Candida species, but these species can also be found in subgingival biofilm. The present study investigated the genetic diversity and production of exoenzymes of C. albicans and C. dubliniensis isolated from the oral cavity of systemically healthy patients with periodontitis. DESIGN Fifty-three patients were analysed. Samples were collected from three oral cavity sites (periodontal pocket, gingival sulci and oral mucosa), plated and, after isolation, suspect strains of C. albicans and C. dubliniensis were identified by PCR. The genetic diversity of the isolates was evaluated by RAPD and the activities of the secreted aspartyl proteinases and phospholipases were evaluated by the agar plate method. RESULTS Twenty-one patients showed positive results for Candida spp. There were no statistically significant differences between genders, or between sites. C. albicans was the most frequently found specie, while C. dubliniensis was isolated from the periodontal pocket of only one patient. Sixteen genotypes were detected among the C. albicans isolates, and one among the C. dubliniensis isolates. The similarity coefficient (S(SM)) values among the C. albicans genotypes ranged from 0.684 to 1.0 with an average of 0.905+/-0.074. All isolates produced high levels of Saps and most of them produced high levels of phospholipases. No relationship was found between the genotypes and the pattern of enzymatic production. There was no association between specific genotypes and their site of isolation. CONCLUSIONS The results of the present study suggest that genetically homogeneous strains of C. albicans are present in the oral cavity of patients with periodontitis and that these strains are capable of producing high levels of exoenzyme.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to describe the degree of yeast-colonization in diabetic and hemodialysed-users of dental prostheses. Individuals (306) were examined using an oral rinse technique in order to evaluate the incidence of yeast-carriage, and genotype of C. albicans. Yeasts were isolated from 68.4% (91/133) individual's dental prostheses users. Dental prostheses were found to be a significant factor for the yeast colonization (P < 0.05). Overall, the intensity of carriage was higher in diabetic patients as compared with health and hemodialysed individuals (P < 0.05). The isolation rates were: C. albicans (51.7%), C. parapsilosis (20.9%), C. tropicalis (14.3%), C. glabrata (6.6%), C. krusei (3.3%), C. rugosa (1.1%), and Pichia (Pichia ohmeri, 2.2%). Ready-To-Go RAPD Analysis Beads were used and primer OPJ 6 distinguished the C. albicans isolates found in prostheses users. All the isolates were grouped into 11 RAPD profiles in four main clusters and, the average S (AB) for the entire collection of 47 C. albicans isolates were 0.779 +/- 0.178. Over 85% of isolates had a similarity level higher than or equal to 0.8 reinforcing the idea that the use of dental prostheses, independently of the host's clinical condition, probably provides the necessary conditions for these strains to gain a growth-specific advantage over others.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Topical steroids are the first choice for the treatment of oral lichen planus (OLP). Antifungal drugs are often employed together with them, to prevent secondary oral candidosis, although it has been suggested anecdotally that they can also be beneficial for OLP itself. OBJECTIVES To compare the effect of clobetasol propionate with and without a topical antifungal drug (miconazole) on the symptoms and extension of OLP. METHODS A randomized, parallel, double-blind trial was conducted at the Unit of Oral Medicine and Pathology of the University of Milan. Thirty-five outpatients with histologically proven OLP were randomly assigned to receive either clobetasol propionate and miconazole, or clobetasol propionate and placebo for 6 weeks. Primary outcomes included symptoms and extension of lesions; adverse effects were also recorded. RESULTS All the patients who concluded the study (30 of 35) showed clinical and subjective improvement within 3 weeks. The addition of miconazole did not affect in a significant way the signs and symptoms of OLP. No cases of clinical candidosis were seen in the patients taking miconazole, while one-third (five of 15) of the placebo group were affected. CONCLUSIONS Although effective in preventing iatrogenic candidosis, the addition of miconazole to topical steroid treatment does not improve the efficacy of the therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus is a common disease found worldwide and it has been previously suggested that oral candidal infections may be more frequent or severe in patients with this disease. Systemic and local factors may influence the balance between the host and yeasts, and favour the transformation of Candida isolates from commensal to pathogenic microorganisms. Candida species have developed specific virulence mechanisms that confer the ability to colonise host surfaces, to invade deeper host tissue, or to evade host defences. Few studies have investigated the expression of the virulence attributes of oral Candida isolates in patients with diabetes mellitus. MATERIAL AND METHODS The in vitro extracellular proteinase production and the in vitro ability to adhere to fibronectin of 229 Candida isolates of two geographic different groups of patients with diabetes mellitus and of healthy subjects were assessed. RESULTS Candida isolates of patients with diabetes mellitus expressed a higher ability to adhere than those of healthy subjects. Higher levels of adhesion were also recorded in patients with a lower oral Candida colonisation. No differences were observed in the in vitro expression of extracellular proteinase of Candida isolates of patients with diabetes mellitus and those of non-diabetic subjects. Isolates of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus expressed greater levels of proteinase than isolates of type 1 diabetes mellitus. CONCLUSIONS Diabetes mellitus could be considered as an additional variable that may influence not only oral Candida carriage but also the ability of isolates to enhance the expression of virulence attributes.

Abstract
The most common antifungal drugs in current clinical use for the treatment of oral candidosis are polyenes and azoles, mainly used topically. Poor glycaemic control in association with other local factors, such as the presence of oral dental prostheses, salivary pH, salivary flow rate and tobacco habits, may lead to the development of oral candidosis. Topical antifungal agents are frequently used to prevent the development of candidal infections in patients with poor metabolic control, particularly in the elderly wearing dentures. The aim of this study was to assess the antifungal susceptibility of Candida isolates to six antifungal agents using a commercially available kit, Fungitest. The isolated were collected from patients affected by diabetes mellitus from two different geographic localities (London, UK, and Parma, Italy) and from a group of healthy non-diabetic subjects. No differences in antifungal susceptibility to the six agents tested were observed between Candida isolates from diabetic and non-diabetic subjects. However, differences were observed between the two geographically different diabetes mellitus populations. Oral yeast isolates from diabetes mellitus patients in the UK more often displayed resistance or intermediate resistance to fluconazole (P=0.02), miconazole (P<0.0001), and ketoconazole (P=0.01) than did isolates from diabetes mellitus patients in Italy. In addition, more C. albicans isolates were found in diabetic and non-diabetic subjects that were susceptible to fluconazole (P=0.0008 and P=0.01, respectively) than non-albicans isolates. The difference in the antifungal resistance of isolates from the two populations of diabetes mellitus patients may be related to differences in the therapeutic management of candidal infections between the two centres.

Abstract
It has been reported that poor glycaemic control predisposes to oral candidal infection in diabetic patients. For instance, the carriage of Candida species and the density of candidal growth in the oral cavity is frequently claimed to be increased in patients with diabetes mellitus. However, the validity of these observations remains controversial. Hence, we review and discuss here the clinical data in the literature on the relationship between diabetes and oral candidal carriage and infection, and possible mechanisms associated with its pathogenicity.

Abstract
This paper reviews the current concepts of mycology and candidal infections as they relate to the oral cavity. Proposed classification for the presentation of oral candidosis is outlined as are examples of these topical infections, such as erythematous, pseudomembranous and hyperplastic candidosis, as well as angular chelitis and median rhomboid glossitis. The diagnosis and principles of management of oral candidosis are discussed, the therapeutic agents available for the management of these infections are presented and a treatment protocol for the management of patients with oral candidosis is given.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS A monoclonal killer anti-idiotypic antibody (mAbK10) and a synthetic killer peptide, acting as internal images of a microbicidal, wide-spectrum yeast killer toxin (KT) have been recently shown to express candidacidal in vitro and an in vivo therapeutic activity against experimental mucosal and systemic candidosis models caused by a reference strain of Candida albicans (10S). MATERIAL AND METHODS The in vitro candidacidal activity of mAbK10 and synthetic killer peptide was compared using a colony forming unit assay against a large number of isolates of different Candida spp., obtained from oral saliva of adult diabetic (type 1 and 2) and nondiabetic subjects from Parma (Italy) and London (UK). RESULTS Both the KT-mimics exerted a strong dose-dependent candidacidal activity, probably mediated by the interaction with beta-glucan KT receptors on target yeast cells, against all the tested strains, regardless of their species and pattern of resistance to conventional antifungal agents. CONCLUSIONS These observations open new perspectives in the design and production of candidacidal compounds whose mechanism reflects that exerted in nature by killer yeasts.

Abstract
We determined the in vitro activity of fluconazole against 1565 clinical Candida spp. isolates collected from different specimens of non-AIDS outpatients and inpatients in 3 different regions of Italy. Susceptibility testing was performed by agar disk diffusion using the NCCLS document M44-A guidelines. Candida albicans was the most frequently isolated yeast (68%) followed by C. glabrata (15%), C. tropicalis (5%), C. parapsilosis (5%), and C. krusei (5%). Other yeasts represented 4% of all isolates. Of the 1565 isolates tested, 1449 (92.6%) were susceptible (S) to fluconazole, 43 (2.7%) were susceptible dose-dependent (S-DD) and 73 (4.7%) were resistant (R). Almost all (98.2%) of the C. albicans isolates were classified as S or S-DD. Despite its widespread use, fluconazole displayed good activity against the isolates we tested, and the disk diffusion method was confirmed as a reliable approach to the evaluation of in vitro susceptibility of yeasts to this antimycotic agent.

Abstract
The aim of this investigation was to determine the ability of Candida albicans to form biofilms on enamel, dentine and denture acrylic of various surface roughnesses. Biofilms of C. albicans were grown on various materials in a constant depth film fermenter (CDFF) and maintained with artificial saliva. Enamel, dentine and denture acrylic were prepared to the same surface roughness using silicon carbide grit. In a separate experiment, denture acrylic was prepared to different surface roughnesses. At various intervals, the materials were removed from the CDFF, the biofilms disrupted and the number of yeast and hyphae present determined. The total number of yeast cells present on enamel was higher than either dentine or acrylic. The highest numbers of yeast cells were found on the roughest surfaces at 6 h; however, higher numbers of hyphae were found on enamel at 6 h and 24 h. Confocal laser scanning microscopy images revealed that the maturation of biofilms on denture acrylic may be dependent upon hyphal cells. The results of the present study show that both the type of surface and their roughness affect the initial formation and subsequent structure of developing of C. albicans biofilms.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown a high incidence (77%) of isolation of Candida spp. from the oral cavities of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. The aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence of yeast in the oral cavities of patients suffering from type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The patients were classified according to the level of diabetic control (HbA1c), and further stratified on the presence or absence of dental prosthesis. Oral rinse samples were assessed for the growth of yeast and the degree of colonization. Oral isolates were defined to the species level by both phenotypic and novel molecular methods. The overall proportion (60%) of diabetic patients who had Candida spp. isolated from the oral cavity was similar to that previously reported. Local oral factors, such as the presence of dentures, seemed to have a greater influence than diabetic status on the amount and species of Candida isolated from the oral cavities of diabetic patients. Diabetic patients with dentures had more non-albicans Candida isolated from their mouths than dentate diabetic patients. Candida dubliniensis was isolated from diabetic patients and may have a predilection for dentate patients.
