Plant cell wall chemistry: implications for ruminant utilisation

Ruminants have adapted to cope with bulky, fibrous forage diets by accommodating a large, diverse microbial population in the reticulo-rumen. Ruminants are dependent on forages as their main sources of energy and other nutrients. Forages are comprised of a complex matrix of cellulose, hemicellulose, protein, minerals and phenolic compounds (including lignin and tannins) with various linkages; many of which are poorly defined. The composition and characteristics of polysaccharides vary greatly among forages and plant cell walls. Plant cell walls are linked and packed together in tight configurations to resist degradation, and hence their nutritional value to animals varies considerably, depending on composition, structure and degradability. An understanding of the inter-relationship between the chemical composition and the degradation of plant cell walls by rumen microorganisms is of major economic importance to ruminant production. Increasing the efficiency of fibre degradation in the rumen has been the subject of extensive research for many decades. This review summarises current knowledge of forage chemistry in order to develop strategies to increase efficiency of forage utilisation by ruminants.

Effects of phytases and dehulling treatments on in vitro iron and zinc bioavailability in faba bean (Vicia faba L.) flour and legume fractions

In vitro digestions were performed on faba bean flours with decreased phytate contents and on 2 dephytinized or nondephytinized faba bean fractions, a dehulled faba bean fraction, and a hull fraction with low and high fiber and tannin contents, respectively. In vitro bioavailability iron and zinc was defined as the relative amount of iron and zinc that became soluble after enzymatic treatment. Faba bean samples were sequentially digested with enzymes, including amylase, pepsin, pancreatin, and bile, under certain conditions following the enzymatic degradation procedure. Iron and zinc in vitro bioavailability of whole faba bean flours were significantly improved by phytate degradation, even if the phytate were not all degraded. Total dephytinization of dehulled faba bean led to an obvious increase in iron and zinc in vitro bioavailability, but that of hulls had no effect on either iron or zinc in vitro bioavailability. Fibers and tannins other than phytate are more important in chelating a high proportion of iron and zinc in faba bean hulls.

Broiler responses to supplementation of phytase and admixture of carbohydrases and protease in maize-soyabean meal diets with or without maize Distillers' Dried Grain with Solubles

1. This experiment investigated growth performance and nutrient utilisation responses of broilers to partial replacement of maize and soyabean meal in broiler diets with 100 g kg(-1) maize Distillers' Dried Grain with Solubles (mDDGS) as well as responses to supplementation of an admixture of carbohydrases and protease (XAP) or phytase individually or in combination in the diets. 2. A total of 288 one-day-old broilers were allocated to 8 treatments in a randomised complete block design and a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. The three factors were two levels each of mDDGS (0 or 100 g kg(-1)), phytase (0 or 1000 FTU kg(-1)), and XAP (0 or 500 mg kg(-1)). 3. Each treatment had 6 replicate cages with 6 birds per replicate cage. The control diets were formulated to meet all nutrient requirements of broilers according to National Research Council recommendations of 1994, but were marginally deficient in non-phytate P and ME. 4. Weight gain and gain:food were higher in broilers receiving diets containing mDDGS. The coefficient of apparent ileal N digestibility was lower in diets with mDDGS. Phytase increased the coefficient of apparent ileal DM digestibility in all diets. 5. Phytase improved the coefficient of the apparent total tract DM retention independently of mDDGS and tended to improve the coefficient of apparent P retention in the diets without mDDGS. The enzymes were additive in their effects in the diets with mDDGS. Overall, the results showed that adding 100 g kg(-1) mDDGS to a maize-soyabean meal diet had no negative effect on growth when energy and nutrient concentrations were similar to the maize-soyabean meal diet, and that phytase or an admixture of carbohydrases and protease individually or in combination modestly improved nutrient utilisation independently of mDDGS addition. Combination of the enzymes did not produce greater benefit than the use of phytase alone.

A revised model for studying phosphorus and calcium kinetics in growing sheep

The objective of the study was to revise a model of P kinetics proposed by Vitti et al. (2000) and extend its use to study Ca flows in growing sheep. Twelve Santa Ines male sheep, 8 mo of age, with average BW of 31.6 kg were injected with 32P and 45Ca to trace the movement of P and Ca in the body. The original model had 4 pools representing the gut, plasma, soft tissues, and bone. In the revised model, instantaneous values rather than averages for pool derivatives were incorporated, and the model was extended to represent absorption and excretion of phytate P explicitly. The amendments improved the model, resulting in higher flows between plasma and bone than between plasma and tissue and, therefore, a more accurate representation of P metabolism. Phosphorus and Ca metabolism were then assessed conjointly using the revised model. The results showed that P and Ca metabolism are closely related as evidenced by the ratio of these minerals in the bidirectional flows between plasma and bone and between plasma and tissue. Phytate P digestibility was 47%, and P retention was negative (-1.4 g/d), suggesting that a feed characteristic impaired P utilization and led to P deficiency. The revised model provides an improved prediction of P and Ca metabolism that can be used to assess mineral requirements and to estimate losses to the environment.

Utilization of distillers dried grains with solubles and phytase in sow lactation diets to meet the phosphorus requirement of the sow and reduce fecal phosphorus concentration1

Two experiments were completed to determine the potential for using distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) in diets with or without phytase to provide available P, energy, and protein to highly productive lactating sows without increasing their fecal P. In Exp. 1, the dietary treatments were as follows: (1) corn and soybean meal with 5% beet pulp (BP) or (2) corn and soybean meal with 15% DDGS (DDGS). Besides containing similar amounts of fiber, diets were isonitrogenous (21% CP, 1.2% Lys) and isophosphorus (0.8% P). Sixty-one sows were allotted to dietary treatments at approximately 110 d of gestation (when they were placed in farrowing crates) based on genetics, parity, and date of farrowing. Sows were gradually transitioned to their lactation diet. On d 2 of lactation, litters were cross-fostered to achieve 11 pigs/litter. Sows and litters were weighed on d 2 and 18. Fecal grab samples were collected on d 7, 14, and 18 of lactation. Dietary treatment did not affect the number of pigs weaned (10.9 vs. 10.8) or litter weaning weight. On d 14, DDGS sows had less fecal P concentration than BP sows (28.3 vs. 32.8 mg/g; P = 0.04). Fecal Ca of sows fed DDGS decreased for d 7, 14, and 18 (55.6, 51.4, and 47.1 mg/g of DM, respectively; P = 0.05) but not for BP sows. In Exp. 2, the dietary treatments were as follows: (1) corn and soybean meal (CON), (2) CON + 500 phytase units of Natuphos/kg diet, as fed (CON + PHY), (3) corn and soybean meal with 15% DDGS and no phytase (DDGS), or (4) DDGS + 500 FTU of Natuphos/kg of diet, as fed (DDGS + PHY). Sows (n = 87) were managed as described for Exp 1. Litter BW gain (46.0, 46.3, 42.1, and 42.2 kg; P = 0.25) and sow BW loss (8.1, 7.2, 7.4, and 6.3 kg for CON, CON + PHY, DDGS, and DDGS + PHY, respectively; P = 0.97) were not affected by dietary treatment. Fecal P concentration did not differ among dietary treatments but was reduced at d 14 and 18 compared with d 7 (P = 0.001). However, fecal phytate P concentration was decreased by the addition of DDGS when DDGS and DDGS + PHY were compared with the CON sows except on d 7 (P < 0.05). Sows fed CON diet had greater fecal phytate P than sows fed DDGS, and sows fed DDGS + PHY had less fecal phytate P than sows fed DDGS with no phytase (P = 0.001). Although these experiments were only carried out for 1 lactation, these results indicate that highly productive sows can sustain lactation performance with reduced fecal phytate P when fed DDGS and phytase in lactation diets.

Iron and zinc in vitro availability in pearl millet flours (Pennisetum glaucum) with varying phytate, tannin, and fiber contents

Simulations of gastro-intestinal digestion, used to estimate in vitro iron and zinc availability, were performed on two kinds of samples: (i) samples with decreased phytate contents from whole pearl millet flour and (ii) nondephytinized or dephytinized samples from two pearl millet grain fractions, a decorticated fraction with low fiber and tannin contents and a bran fraction with high fiber and tannin contents. Iron and zinc in vitro availabilities of whole pearl millet flour were significantly improved by phytate degradation, even if the IP6 were not all degraded. Total dephytinization of decorticated fraction led to a marked increase in iron and zinc in vitro availabilities, but that of bran fraction had no effect on either iron or zinc in vitro availability. Even if phytates are involved in reducing in vitro iron and zinc availability in pearl millet flour, fibers and tannins play an important role by chelating a high proportion of iron and zinc in grain hulls.
