Studies on polishing of Ti and Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy with five dental abrasives

Influence of dental abrasives on surface roughness, gloss, and color of titanium

PURPOSE

The influence of three dental abrasives on the surface roughness, glossiness, and color of titanium (Ti) after mechanical polishing was investigated.

METHODS

The specimens were divided into groups, referred to as SM, SR, and TP, to distinguish the different polishing processes. SM: rubber polishing using a rubber point containing SiC abrasive particles at 20,000 rpm, followed by gloss polishing; SR: rubber polishing using a rubber point containing Al₂O₃ abrasive particles at 20,000 rpm, followed by gloss polishing; TP: rubber polishing using a rubber point containing TiO₂ abrasive particles at 6,000 rpm, followed by gloss polishing. Gloss polishing was carried out at 10,000 rpm using a leather buffing wheel. Measurements to evaluate the surface conditions of Ti were performed after each polishing process.

RESULTS

There were no significant differences in the Ra and glossiness values between the SM and TP groups; these specimens were not as smooth and glossy as the SR group. The SM group showed relatively high values of lightness and chroma after gloss polishing.

CONCLUSION

Rubber polishing with abrasives containing SiC or TiO₂ particles before gloss polishing did not achieve appropriate surface conditions on Ti.

Castability and mechanical properties of Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al alloy in dental casting

The castability, mechanical properties, and fracture characteristics of Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al alloy were compared with those of Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy and pure titanium (CP Ti) for application of this β-type titanium alloy in cast dental prostheses. Cast specimens were prepared with a centrifugal casting machine. A tensile test was performed according to ISO standard 22674. The castability index for Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al was lower than those for Ti-6Al-7Nb and CP Ti. The tensile strength of Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al was 852 MPa, which was lower than that of Ti-6Al-7Nb and higher than that of CP Ti. The proof strength of Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al was 799 MPa, which was comparable to that of Ti-6Al-7Nb and higher than that of CP Ti. The elastic modulus of Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al was 81.0 GPa, which was lower than the values for Ti-6Al-7Nb and CP Ti. Elongation of Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al was 5.1%, which was comparable to that of Ti-6Al-7Nb and less than that of CP Ti. The shape of the fractured segment was narrower for Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al than for Ti-6Al-7Nb and CP Ti. The deformation characteristics of Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al may result in decreased stress relative to increased strain during plastic deformation in the stress-strain diagram. In conclusion, Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al alloy has a low elastic modulus and exhibits limited ductile plastic deformation in cast dental prostheses.

Effects of polishing methods on Candida albicans adhesion on cast pure titanium surfaces

OBJECTIVE

To explore the effects of different polishing methods on Candida albicans adhesion to cast pure titanium surfaces.

METHODS

Pure titanium test specimens randomly divided into 4 groups: not specially treated (CT), manual polishing (MPT), electrolytic polishing (EPT), and centrifugal barrel polishing (CPT). Surface roughness was measured with surface profilometer. Contact angles of water, diiodomethane, and ethylene glycol on specimen surface were measured, and the free energy was calculated. Each group were immersed in a C. albicans suspension for 48 hours, and cell count of C. albicans adhesion were taken. Morphology of C. albicans adhesion was observed by SEM.

RESULTS

Surface roughness (Ra) were in the following order: CT > EPT > MPT > CPT. The amount of C. albicans adhesion to the surface of CPT was significantly less than CT, MPT, and EPT by cells count (P < 0.05). In SEM, less C. albicans aggregation formed on the surface of CPT than other 3 groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Specimens treated by the CPT method showed superior effect to the specimens treated with MPT and EPT methods in reducing the adhesion of C. albicans.

Hardness and microstructure of Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al alloy for dental casting

OBJECTIVE

The hardness and microstructures of Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al alloy castings were investigated for application to dental cast prostheses.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Cast specimens of Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al alloy, Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy and CP Ti were prepared using a centrifugal-type casting machine and a magnesia-based investment material. The hardness of the cross-sections of the cast specimens were measured. The microstructure of the castings was observed using an optical microscope and was then analyzed by X-ray diffractometry.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS

The hardness of Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al alloy at the inner part of the castings was 361 Hv, while the hardnesses of Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy and CP Ti were 384 and 269 Hv, respectively. The thickness of the surface hardened layer for Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al alloy was thinner than those for Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy and CP Ti. The microstructure of the Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al alloy casting was confirmed to be β phase.

Large-area electron beam irradiation for surface polishing of cast titanium

Cast titanium is a known hard-to-polish material, and its final polishing step is a perpetual challenge. The best way to tackle this challenge lies in automatic and non-mechanical polishing methods. Against this background, the suitability of large-area electron beam (EB) irradiation was examined in this study. In parallel, the optimum condition for efficient surface polishing was investigated. Cast titanium specimens were prepared, whereby their surface glossiness, surface roughness, and corrosion resistance were measured before and after EB irradiation. After EB irradiation, favorable results were observed: the cast titanium surface became smooth, the glossiness increased, and corrosion resistance was enhanced. These results were attributed to the low heat conductivity of titanium. With mechanical polishing, this property results in temperature rise and burnout reaction of the titanium surface with oxygen and the abrasives. However, during EB irradiation, the low heat conductivity of titanium was an advantage in raising the surface temperature to the melting point, such that a smooth surface was yielded after solidification. Based on the results obtained, automatic polishing by EB seemed to be a suitable polishing method for metal frameworks of removable dentures, and an efficient one too by saving time and effort.

Effect of Different Finishing and Polishing Agents on the Surface Roughness of Cast Pure Titanium

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of finishing and polishing agents on surface roughness of cast commercially pure titanium using scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A standardized square steel die measuring 10 x 10 mm with a thickness of 2 mm was machine cut. An impression of this die was used to create wax patterns for casting. Sixty specimens were cast in commercially pure titanium. These were divided into three groups (A, B, and C) of 20 specimens each. Group A specimens were polished with black, brown, and green rubber discs followed by green polishing compound with buff. Group B specimens were polished with black, brown, and green rubber cones, buffed with yellow polishing cake designed for gold alloy. Group C specimens were polished with silicium carbide cones and buffed with orange polishing cake. Surface roughness of the test specimens was measured in microns with a perthometer. Data were analyzed with ANOVA and Tukey's honest significant difference (HSD) multiple comparison tests among the different groups. Qualitative analysis was done by SEM photomicrographs.

RESULTS

Surface roughness values R(a) for Groups A, B, and C were 0.68 microm, 0.78 microm, and 0.27 microm, respectively. SEM photomicrographs and the statistical analysis revealed that the finishing and polishing were better with Group C test specimens with lower surface roughness values compared with groups A and B. Tests showed that Group C was statistically smoother (p< or = 0.01).

CONCLUSION

Within the limitations of this study, surface roughness was less on cast CpTi specimens that were finished and polished from the cutters designed specifically for titanium.
