Abstract
Abstract
Background
In end-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD), patients experience disabilities stemming from organ failure. These can be worsened by symptoms and complications of underlying cause(s), and the conditions associated with the CKD. There is a dearth of literature regarding palliative rehabilitation in end-stage CKD. Our case highlights the complex medical and rehabilitative issues that such patients face.
Case presentation
A 64-year-old male had end-stage CKD and declined dialysis. After sustaining a myocardial infarction, he suffered a posterior circulation stroke the following month. Whilst undergoing stroke rehabilitation, his progress was further hampered by symptoms of kidney failure. The patient underwent interdisciplinary rehabilitation for 29 days. Goal-setting was performed with the patient and family to allow contextualization to the patient’s stage of disease, beliefs and environment. Care-giver training was provided to facilitate discharge back home. He demonstrated improvements in physical endurance and function. His Functional Independence Measure score improved from 51 to 82. He outlived his prognosis of 3–6 months and demised 15 months after discharge.
Conclusions
In end-stage CKD without renal replacement therapy, rehabilitation and palliative care efforts align to enhance quality of life, in the face of unlikely cure. While palliative care provides symptom management and supportive care, rehabilitation safeguards physical endurance and ability. It is in the hope of doing so, independence and thence, self-esteem, can be maintained. Future research should explore the benefits of palliative rehabilitation in renal failure.

Abstract
Rationale & Objective People receiving maintenance hemodialysis (HD) experience significant activity barriers but desire the ability to do more and remain independent. To learn about how to help people who require dialysis stay active, a mixed methods study was designed to assess functional status and explore participants’ lived activity experiences. Study Design A concurrent mixed methods design was chosen to increase understanding of the real-life activity experiences of people who require dialysis through in-depth interviews paired with functional status measures. The qualitative findings were fully integrated with the quantitative results to link characteristics associated with different physical activity levels. Setting & Participants A purposive sample of 15 adult patients receiving maintenance HD for at least 3 months was recruited from 7 dialysis centers in Newark, New Jersey. Analytical Approach Thematic analysis using principles of interpretive phenomenology. Fully integrated quantitative and qualitative data with joint displays and conversion mixed methods. Results Participants had a median age of 58 years and were predominantly African American (83%) and men (67%). Three descriptive categories were generated about the participants. They described physical activity as a routine daily activity rather than structured exercise. All participants experienced substantial hardship in addition to chronic kidney disease and expressed that family, friends, and faith were essential to their ability to be active. An overarching theme was generated for participants’ mindsets about physical activity. Within the mindset theme, we discerned 3 subthemes comprising characteristics of participants’ mindsets by levels of engagement in physical activity. Limitations While code saturation and trends in functional status measures were achieved with 15 participants, a larger sample size would allow for deeper meaning saturation and statistical inference. Conclusions Patients receiving maintenance HD with an engaged mindset exhibited more adaptive coping skills, moved more, wanted to help others, and had a normal body weight habitus. These participants employed adaptive coping skills to carry out daily life activities of importance, highlighting the value of adaptive coping to help overcome the challenges of being physically active.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Kidney transplantation (KT) is the gold standard for treatment of patients with end- stage-renal disease. To expand the donor reserve, it is necessary to use marginal/suboptimal kidneys. METHODS We retrospectively evaluated the short/long-term outcome of 34 KT elderly patients who received allografts with vascular abnormalities (MRA group), in comparison with 34 KT patients who received a kidney with a single renal artery (SRA group) pair-matched by age, length of time on dialysis, comorbidity and donor age. RESULTS All participants completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire at KT, and then 4, 8, and 12 weeks after transplantation. Our data indicate that kidney with vascular anatomical variants may be successfully transplanted, since the overall rate of surgical complications was 20.6% in the SRA group and 17.6% in the MRA group and that the 5-year survival rate after KT was 100% in both groups. CONCLUSIONS The data also underline that individualized physical activity programs induced similar excellent results in both groups, improving physical capacities, arterial pressure, lipid metabolism, insulin sensitivity, quality of life and physical and mental status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to compare the effects of a physical activity program on daily physical activity and quality of life in kidney transplant (KTx) recipients and in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). MATERIALS AND METHODS The study group consisted of 24 KTx recipients and 15 patients with stage 3 to 4 CKD. Habitual physical activity was monitored for 72 hours. Individualized structured programs of increased physical activity were prepared based on baseline physical performance. The measurements were repeated after 1 and 3 months. Participants completed the 36-item Short Form Health Survey questionnaire and an International Physical Activity Questionnaire at baseline and after 1, 2, and 3 months. RESULTS Physical activity duration and total energy expenditure significantly increased after 3 months in both KTx recipients (from 126 ± 87 to 200 ± 132 min/d, P = .001, and from 1.73 ± 0.37 to 2.24 ± 0.59 cal/min, P < .001, respectively) and CKD patients (from 79 ± 78 to 129 ± 114 min/d, P < .001, and from 1.5 ± 0.5 to 1.92 ± 0.47 cal/min, P < .001, respectively). Short Form Health Survey total score and physical component scale score improved significantly in both groups. Mental component scale score increased significantly only in KTx patients. CONCLUSION Increased physical activity induces similar beneficial effects on total and physical activity component of quality of life and habitual daily activity in CKD and KTx patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Benefits of exercise on dialysis (EOD) are well established, however, uptake in our local satellite haemodialysis units is low. The implications of the status quo are risks to treatment efficiency, equity and patient centredness in managing personal health risks. The current study aimed to identify and address barriers to exercise participation while on dialysis by substantiating local EOD risks, assigning context, implementing changes and evaluating their impact. Our primary objective was to increase the uptake of EOD across our five dialysis units. METHODS Semi-structured interview and questionnaire data from patients and nursing staff were used to inform a root-cause analysis of barriers to exercise participation while on dialysis. Intervention was subsequently designed and implemented by a senior physiotherapist. It consisted of patient and nursing staff education, equipment modification and introduction of patient motivation schemes. RESULTS Staff knowledge, patient motivation and equipment problems were the main barriers to EOD. A significant increase in the uptake of EOD from 23.3% pre-intervention to 74.3% post-intervention was achieved [χ2 (1, N = 174) = 44.18, P < 0.001]. CONCLUSIONS Barriers to EOD are challenging, but there is evidence that patients wish to participate and would benefit from doing so. The input of a physiotherapist in the dialysis units had a significant positive effect on the uptake of EOD. National guidelines should encourage dialysis units to include professional exercise provision in future service planning.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Differential item functioning (DIF) occurs when members from different groups respond differently to particular items in a health-related quality of life (HRQoL) questionnaire after controlling for underlying HRQoL construct. This study aimed to assess DIF in the SF-36 questionnaire and its effect on comparing HRQoL scores across patients on HD and healthy people. METHODS One hundred fifty patients on maintenance hemodialysis (HD) and 642 healthy individuals filled out the Persian version of the SF-36 questionnaire. Multiple-group multiple-indicator multiple-causes (MG-MIMIC) model was used to assess DIF across patients on HD and healthy population. RESULTS Sixteen out of 36 (44.4 %) items were flagged with DIF. Six out of 16 items (37.5 %) were flagged with uniform DIF, nine items (56.2 %) with non-uniform DIF, and one item (6.2 %) with both uniform DIF and non-uniform DIF. DIF items were associated with all subscales with the exception of the limitation due to physical problems and bodily pain subscales. The significant lower HRQoL scores of patients on HD in comparison with healthy people in the physical functioning and vitality subscales did not change after removing the items with uniform DIF. CONCLUSIONS Our findings revealed that patients on HD and healthy people perceived the meaning of the items in SF-36 questionnaire differently. Although the impact of DIF is minimal, the cross-group comparison across patients on HD and healthy people should be performed with caution.

Abstract
Despite consensus among nephrologists that exercise is important and probably beneficial for their patients, assessment of physical function or encouragement of physical activity is not a part of the routine management of patients with CKD. In order to plan an useful strategy for exercise training we need to clearly define some questions. First of all, nephrologists need to be aware of physical exercise benefits; lack of motivation and increased perceived risk by health care professionals have been identified as contributing factors to physical inactivity. Moreover, the main elements necessary for sustaining exercise programs in this population have to take in account, such as the requirement of exercise professionals, equipment and space, individual prescription, adequate commitment from dialysis and medical staff. When PA may not be implemented, a comprehensive, individualized occupational therapy program may improve functional independence and activity of daily living. Finally, physical function has to be careful monitored and assesses by medical staff.

Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text. Background and Objectives: Physical functional disabilities in hemodialysis (HD) patients may increase their mortality and long-term care needs. The aim of this study was to estimate the changes of proportion for different physical functional disabilities along time after beginning HD and the lifelong care needs. Methods: We used a population-based cohort consisting of 84,657 incident HD patients in Taiwan between 1998 and 2009 to estimate the survival function and extrapolate to lifetime through a semiparametric method. The Barthel Index (BI) was used to measure the functional disability levels cross-sectionally in 1334 HD patients recruited from 9 HD centers. A BI score <50 was considered as severe disability. Lifetime care needs were obtained by extrapolating the age-stratified survival functions to lifetime and then multiplying them with proportions of different kinds of functional disabilities over time. Results: On average, HD patients had at least 6.4, 2.0, and 1.3 years without disability, with moderate disability, and severe disability, respectively. The most common care needs were stair-climbing and bathing, which were 3.0 and 1.7 years, respectively. HD patients were expected to have about 3 years living with disabilities for those beginning HD at an age above 35 years; however, the older the patient, the higher the proportion of functional disabilities and care needs. Conclusions: HD patients are in need of long-term care and require early intervention and resource planning. The method developed in this study can also be applied to other chronic illnesses with various functional disabilities.

Abstract
Muscle-wasting in chronic kidney disease (CKD) arises from several factors including sedentary behaviour and metabolic acidosis. Exercise is potentially beneficial but might worsen acidosis through exercise-induced lactic acidosis. We studied the chronic effects of exercise in CKD stage 4-5 patients (brisk walking, 30 min, 5 times/week), and non-exercising controls; each group receiving standard oral bicarbonate (STD), or additional bicarbonate (XS) (Total n = 26; Exercising + STD n = 9; Exercising +XS n = 6; Control + STD n = 8; Control + XS n = 3). Blood and vastus lateralis biopsies were drawn at baseline and 6 months. The rise in blood lactate in submaximal treadmill tests was suppressed in the Exercising + XS group. After 6 months, intramuscular free amino acids (including the branched chain amino acids) in the Exercising + STD group showed a striking chronic depletion. This did not occur in the Exercising + XS group. The effect in Exercising + XS patients was accompanied by reduced transcription of ubiquitin E3-ligase MuRF1 which activates proteolysis via the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. Other anabolic indicators (Akt activation and suppression of the 14 kDa actin catabolic marker) were unaffected in Exercising + XS patients. Possibly because of this, overall suppression of myofibrillar proteolysis (3-methylhistidine output) was not observed. It is suggested that alkali effects in exercisers arose by countering exercise-induced acidosis. Whether further anabolic effects are attainable on combining alkali with enhanced exercise (e.g. resistance exercise) merits further investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a worldwide public health problem. In the National Kidney Foundation Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative guidelines it is stressed that lifestyle issues such as physical activity should be seen as cornerstones of the therapy. The physical fitness in adults with CKD is so reduced that it impinges on ability and capacity to perform activities in everyday life and occupational tasks. An increasing number of studies have been published regarding health effects of various regular exercise programmes in adults with CKD and in renal transplant patients. OBJECTIVES We aimed to: 1) assess the effects of regular exercise in adults with CKD and kidney transplant patients; and 2) determine how the exercise programme should be designed (e.g. type, duration, intensity, frequency of exercise) to be able to affect physical fitness and functioning, level of physical activity, cardiovascular dimensions, nutrition, lipids, glucose metabolism, systemic inflammation, muscle morphology and morphometrics, dropout rates, compliance, adverse events and mortality. SEARCH STRATEGY We searched the Cochrane Renal Group's specialised register, CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, Biosis, Pedro, Amed, AgeLine, PsycINFO and KoreaMed. We also handsearched reference lists of review articles and included studies, conference proceeding's abstracts. There were no language restrictions.Date of last search: May 2010. SELECTION CRITERIA We included any randomised controlled trial (RCT) enrolling adults with CKD or kidney transplant recipients undergoing any type of physical exercise intervention undertaken for eight weeks or more. Studies using less than eight weeks exercise, those only recommending an increase in physical activity, and studies in which co-interventions are not applied or given to both groups were excluded. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Data extraction and assessment of study and data quality were performed independently by the two authors. Continuous outcome data are presented as standardised mean difference (SMD) or mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). MAIN RESULTS Forty-five studies, randomising 1863 participants were included in this review. Thirty two studies presented data that could be meta-analysed. Types of exercise training included cardiovascular training, mixed cardiovascular and resistance training, resistance-only training and yoga. Some studies used supervised exercise interventions and others used unsupervised interventions. Exercise intensity was classed as 'high' or 'low', duration of individual exercise sessions ranged from 20 minutes/session to 110 minutes/session, and study duration was from two to 18 months. Seventeen per cent of studies were classed as having an overall low risk of bias, 33% as moderate, and 49% as having a high risk of bias.The results shows that regular exercise significantly improved: 1) physical fitness (aerobic capacity, 24 studies, 847 participants: SMD -0.56, 95% CI -0.70 to -0.42; walking capacity, 7 studies, 191 participants: SMD -0.36, 95% CI-0.65 to -0.06); 2) cardiovascular dimensions (resting diastolic blood pressure, 11 studies, 419 participants: MD 2.32 mm Hg, 95% CI 0.59 to 4.05; resting systolic blood pressure, 9 studies, 347 participants: MD 6.08 mm Hg, 95% CI 2.15 to 10.12; heart rate, 11 studies, 229 participants: MD 6 bpm, 95% CI 10 to 2); 3) some nutritional parameters (albumin, 3 studies, 111 participants: MD -2.28 g/L, 95% CI -4.25 to -0.32; pre-albumin, 3 studies, 111 participants: MD - 44.02 mg/L, 95% CI -71.52 to -16.53; energy intake, 4 studies, 97 participants: SMD -0.47, 95% CI -0.88 to -0.05); and 4) health-related quality of life. Results also showed how exercise should be designed in order to optimise the effect. Other outcomes had insufficient evidence. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS There is evidence for significant beneficial effects of regular exercise on physical fitness, walking capacity, cardiovascular dimensions (e.g. blood pressure and heart rate), health-related quality of life and some nutritional parameters in adults with CKD. Other outcomes had insufficient evidence due to the lack of data from RCTs. The design of the exercise intervention causes difference in effect size and should be considered when prescribing exercise with the aim of affecting a certain outcome. Future RCTs should focus more on the effects of resistance training interventions or mixed cardiovascular- and resistance training as these exercise types have not been studied as much as cardiovascular exercise.

Abstract
Although it is widely accepted that exercise is beneficial in patients with end-stage renal disease as in the general population, it is not easy to incorporate exercise programs into routine clinical practice. This review aimed to investigate the beneficial effects of exercise during hemodialysis and also to introduce various intradialytic exercise programs and their advantages as a first step in combining exercise programs into clinical practice. Aerobic and resistance exercise are beneficial not only in improving physical functioning, including maximal oxygen uptake and muscle strength, but also in improving anthropometrics, nutritional status, hematological indexes, inflammatory cytokines, depression, and health-related quality of life. However, it is not clear whether the beneficial effects of exercise are limited to only relatively healthy dialysis patients. Therefore, the effects of individualized exercise programs for elderly patients or patients with comorbid conditions need to be studied further.

Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is becoming a serious health problem throughout the world and is one of the most potent known risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Deterioration of physical function is accelerated in patients with CKD to levels that significantly impact on clinically and patient-important outcomes such as morbidity, employment, quality of life and, ultimately, survival. However, meaningful interpretation of the existing physical function-related literature in adult patients with CKD is hindered, possibly due to inconsistent choice of methodology, assessment tools and reporting of data. The current comprehensive review of the literature aims to provide the theoretical rationale and framework for physical function assessment and to identify the prevailing approaches to (i) the characterization (classification and terminology), (ii) interpretation, and (iii) reporting of physical function assessment in people with CKD. Comprehensive assessment of physical function can provide important information about the presence of 'physiological impairment' at a body systems level (exercise tolerance under well controlled, laboratory-based procedures), 'functional limitations' (physical performance during tasks imitating usual daily, personal or occupational tasks) and 'functional disability' (via self-reported physical functioning in the context of a socio-cultural environment). The selection of physical function assessment tools should be guided by the primary purpose of the assessment (e.g. research or routine clinical monitoring), by the overall scientific 'soundness' of the chosen tool (e.g. validity, utility, reproducibility, responsiveness characteristics) and by operational factors (e.g. patient collaboration, cost, personnel expertise). Recommendations for tests, methods and protocols are therefore presented, for the assessment of cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness, physical performance and self-reported physical functioning. These recommendations are based on synthesis of available information as derived from controlled exercise training interventions in adult patients with CKD. Special considerations for physical function assessment and suggestions for future research are also addressed. Such an information synthesis might promote greater standardization of the physical function assessment of patients with CKD in routine clinical care or research settings. This would potentially lead to generation of adequate scientific decision-making criteria to help researchers and healthcare providers in selecting the most appropriate measures according to the physical function areas assessed, and to accurately and meaningfully characterize and compare patients' responses to therapeutic interventions.

Abstract
This article reviews the literature addressing exercise programs for dialysis patients to identify elements necessary for sustaining exercise programs in this population. Literature searches for publications (January 1980-February 2009) in Medline (OVID), PubMed, CINAHL (EBSCO), EBSCOhost EJS, ProQuest Central, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink (Kluwer), and Wiley Interscience (Blackwell) were performed. Reference lists from relevant articles were hand-searched for further publications. Criteria for inclusion included full-text primary research and review articles focused on exercise for adult hemodialysis patients. One hundred and seventy one publications were found with a primary focus on exercise in hemodialysis. Of these, 28 primary research and 14 review articles addressed one or more aspects of sustainability of hemodialysis exercise programs. Factors contributing to sustainable exercise programs included: dedicated exercise professionals; encouragement to exercise intradialytically; dialysis and medical staff commitment; adequate physical requirements of equipment and space; interesting and stimulating; cost implications need to be addressed; exercise is not for everyone; requires individual prescription; and there is no age barrier to exercise on hemodialysis.

Abstract
Hemodialysis (HD) patients exhibit poor functional capacity and reduced quality of life as a result of the complications associated with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). A review of the literature indicates that regular physical activity can reduce the complications associated with ESRD by inducing adaptations in the cardiovascular, nervous, and musculoskeletal systems. In turn, this increases functional capacity and enhances quality of life in patients on HD. Hemodialysis patients can safely participate in a variety of exercise programs with minimal adverse effects. Intradialytic exercise programs that can incorporate aerobic and resistance exercise promote exercise adherence and should be encouraged on dialysis units.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore and describe the degree of social participation after kidney transplantation and to examine associated factors. METHOD A cross-sectional study on 239 adult patients 1-7.3 years after kidney transplantation was performed via in-home interviews on participation in obligatory activities (i.e., employment, education, household tasks) and leisure activities (volunteer work, assisting others, recreation, sports, clubs/associations, socializing, going out). RESULTS Kidney transplantation patients had a lower educational level, spent less time on obligatory activities, had part-time jobs more often, and participated less in sports compared to a control group from the general population. No difference was found in socializing, church attendance, volunteer work and going out. Multivariate regression analysis showed a negative association of age and a positive association of educational status and time since transplantation with obligatory participation. Multivariate logistic regression showed positive associations of education and time since transplantation with volunteer work; age was negatively and education positively associated with sports and going out, whereas living arrangement was also associated with going out. CONCLUSIONS Although kidney transplantation patients participate less in employment and sports, they do participate in household tasks, volunteer work, going out, socializing and other leisure activities. Participation is associated with factors as age, educational status and time since transplantation.

Abstract
Physical therapists commonly treat people with diabetes for a wide variety of diabetes-associated impairments, including those from diabetes-related vascular disease. Diabetes is associated with both microvascular and macrovascular diseases affecting several organs, including muscle, skin, heart, brain, and kidneys. A common etiology links the different types of diabetes-associated vascular disease. Common risk factors for vascular disease in people with diabetes, specifically type 2 diabetes, include hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, hypertension, tobacco use, and obesity. Mechanisms for vascular disease in diabetes include the pathologic effects of advanced glycation end product accumulation, impaired vasodilatory response attributable to nitric oxide inhibition, smooth muscle cell dysfunction, overproduction of endothelial growth factors, chronic inflammation, hemodynamic dysregulation, impaired fibrinolytic ability, and enhanced platelet aggregation. It is becoming increasingly important for physical therapists to be aware of diabetes-related vascular complications as more patients present with insulin resistance and diabetes. The opportunities for effective physical therapy interventions (such as exercise) are significant.

Abstract
The 2 objectives of this review are to provide background information about functional status in older dialysis patients and to discuss the utility of geriatric dialysis rehabilitation. We performed a literature search using PubMed and MedLine. All relevant texts were reviewed for information on functional status and disability in the renal population and in the general population. Data pertaining to geriatric rehabilitation and geriatric dialysis rehabilitation were also reviewed. We show how disability and functional limitations are more prevalent in populations with advanced stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) compared with those with only mild stages of CKD. We describe data showing that dedicated geriatric dialysis rehabilitation units, using interdisciplinary care models, result in more than 70% of patients meeting their rehabilitation goals and being successfully discharged home. Nephrologists increasingly will be faced with problems arising from functional decline. We conclude by offering suggestions for future changes that may help to stem the rising tide of dialysis disability.

Abstract
End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is a serious illness with significant health consequences and high-cost treatment options. This study estimates direct and indirect cost associated with ESRD from a societal perspective. A prevalence-based approach was used to estimate direct health-care costs and productivity losses from short- and long-term disability. An incident-based human capital approach was used to estimate mortality costs as the sum of the discounted present value of current and future productivity losses from premature deaths. Less than 0.1% of Canadians have ESRD; however, the disease generated direct health-care costs of $1.3 billion in the year 2000. The amount of direct spending per person with ESRD is much more than the average spending per person for all health-care conditions. Adding indirect morbidity and mortality cost brings the total burden associated with ESRD to $1.9 billion. This economic impact is higher than that for skin or infectious diseases, about the same as for genitourinary or endocrine diseases, but lower than that for conditions such as cancer or stroke. This economic weight is borne by a relatively small number of individuals. With the rapid increase in the incidence of ESRD, these findings may be useful in setting priorities for research, prevention programs, and in the planning of treatments. A better understanding of the scope and magnitude of the total economic burden of ESRD would help to inform those making policy decisions.

Abstract
There is no uniformity regarding patient disability following kidney transplantation. Given improved results of patient and graft survival, and the link between insurance, medication coverage and disability, efforts must be made to define disability after a successful transplant. We conducted an individual questioner study of kidney transplant patients to determine factors relating to patient-perceived disability. Seventy patients participated in the study. Patient perception of disability did not correlate with education or ethnicity. Most patients believed they were disabled on dialysis and this did not change following transplantation. While 42 (60%) of the patients felt that they could work, either full-time or part-time, only 20 (28%) were actually working or in school. Most patients believe that working will eliminate disability status and, therefore, insurance and medication coverage. Patients considered disability more related to their status as a kidney transplant patient than any specific physical limitations. The link, whether real or perceived, between 'disability' and immunosuppressive medication coverage is a significant barrier for many patients. The transplant community must reach some degree of consensus regarding post-transplant activity restrictions. The transplant community needs to find a way to take an active role in post-transplant education and employment.

Abstract
We aimed at comparing the elderly adults and normal subjects with regard to their disability, psychological status, and quality of life (QOL). One hundred and twenty-five dialysis patients and 61 controls were recruited in the study. Depression and anxiety symptoms of the patients were evaluated with the Psychological Symptom Screening List (SCL 90-R). For evaluating the disability, the Rivermead mobility index (RMI) was utilized. For evaluating the QOL, we used the short form-36 (SF-36) scale. The Rivermead mobility index of the patients (9.6 +/- 3.4) was found. When compared with controls, dialysis patients had higher levels of disability (p = 0.0001). Depression and anxiety symptom scores of these patients were also significantly higher than that of the controls (p < 0.05). There was a correlation between the disability and depression symptom scores (r: 0.171, p = 0.037). Both physical and mental capacity scores of the dialysis patients were lower than those of the controls (p < 0.05 and p < 0.05) QOL scores for elderly hemodialysis patients were found to be lower. Their disability was higher, making them dependable on others during their daily lives. Specific exercise programs should be developed for these patients. Even the smallest effort in this regard will result in improvements in physical functioning while bringing them significant benefits.
