A dynamic light scattering study of the hypersonic relaxation in liquid toluene

Microscopically based calculations of the free energy barrier and dynamic length scale in supercooled liquids: the comparative role of configurational entropy and elasticity

We compute the temperature-dependent barrier for α-relaxations in several liquids, without adjustable parameters, using experimentally determined elastic, structural, and calorimetric data. We employ the random first order transition (RFOT) theory, in which relaxation occurs via activated reconfigurations between distinct, aperiodic minima of the free energy. Two different approximations for the mismatch penalty between the distinct aperiodic states are compared, one due to Xia and Wolynes (Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 2000, 97, 2990), which scales universally with temperature as for hard spheres, and one due to Rabochiy and Lubchenko (J. Chem. Phys. 2013, 138, 12A534), which employs measured elastic and structural data for individual substances. The agreement between the predictions and experiment is satisfactory, given the uncertainty in the measured experimental inputs. The explicitly computed barriers are used to calculate the glass transition temperature for each substance--a kinetic quantity--from the static input data alone. The temperature dependence of both the elastic and structural constants enters the temperature dependence of the barrier over an extended range to a degree that varies from substance to substance. The lowering of the configurational entropy, however, seems to be the dominant contributor to the barrier increase near the laboratory glass transition, consistent with previous experimental tests of the RFOT theory using the XW approximation. In addition, we compute the temperature dependence of the dynamical correlation length, also without using adjustable parameters. These agree well with experimental estimates obtained using the Berthier et al. (Science 2005, 310, 1797) procedure. Finally, we find the temperature dependence of the complexity of a rearranging region is consistent with the picture based on the RFOT theory but is in conflict with the assumptions of the Adam-Gibbs and "shoving" scenarios for the viscous slowing down in supercooled liquids.

Microscopic calculation of the free energy cost for activated transport in glass-forming liquids

Activated transport in liquids--supercooled liquids in particular--occurs via mutual nucleation of alternative, aperiodic minima of the free energy. Xia and Wolynes [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 97, 2990 (2000)] have made a general argument that at temperatures near the ideal glass transition, the surface penalty for this kind of nucleation is largely determined by the temperature and the logarithm of the size of the vibrational fluctuation of rigid molecular units about the local minimum. Here, we independently show how to estimate this surface tension and, hence, the activation barrier for the activated transport for several actual liquids, using their structure factors and knowledge of the finite-frequency elastic constants. In this estimate, the activation free energy, while depending on the configurational entropy, also depends on the elastic modulus as in the "shoving" models. The resulting estimates are however consistent with the estimate provided by Xia and Wolynes' argument near the glass transition and, in addition, reflect the barrier softening effects predicted earlier for fragile substances.

Gold nanoparticle chemiresistors operating in biological fluids

Functionalised gold nanoparticle (Au(NP)) chemiresistors are investigated for direct sensing of small organic molecules in biological fluids. The principle reason that Au(NP) chemiresistors, and many other sensing devices, have limited operation in biological fluids is due to protein and lipid fouling deactivating the sensing mechanism. In order to extend the capability of such chemiresistor sensors to operate directly in biofluids, it is essential to minimise undesirable matrix effects due to protein and lipidic components. Ultrafiltration membranes were investigated as semi-permeable size-selective barriers to prevent large biomolecule interactions with Au(NP) chemiresistors operating in protein-loaded biofluids. All of the ultrafiltration membranes protected the Au(NP) chemiresistors from fouling by the globular biomolecules, with the 10 kDa molecular weight cut-off size being optimum for operation in biofluids. Titrations of toluene in different protein-loaded fluids indicated that small molecule detection was possible. A sensor array consisting of six different thiolate-functionalised Au(NP) chemiresistors protected with a size-selective ultrafiltration membrane successfully identified, and discriminated the spoilage of pasteurised bovine milk. This proof-of-principle study demonstrates the on-chip protein separation and small metabolite detection capability, illustrating the potential for this technology in the field of microbial metabolomics. Overall, these results demonstrate that a sensor array can be protected from protein fouling with the use of a membrane, significantly increasing the possible application areas of Au(NP) chemiresistors ranging from the food industry to health services.

Light-scattering study of vibrational relaxation in liquid xylenes

Brillouin spectra obtained in dynamic light-scattering experiments are reported for the three isomeric xylenes (ortho-, meta-, and paradimethylbenzenes) between 288 and 363 K. Limiting sound velocities and relaxation times, as obtained from the polarized spectra using the theory developed by Mountain [J. Res. Natl. Bur. Stand. 70A, 207 (1966)], reveal the existence of a relaxation process. Our results suggest that the relaxation process in liquid xylenes has a purely vibrational nature. Vibrational-translational energy exchanges in xylenes are analyzed in terms of available molecular models and compared to those previously obtained for toluene and benzene. The results presented here confirm the important role played by the molecular geometry in the vibrational relaxation process, as the relative arrangement of the methyl groups has significant effect in determining the relaxing vibrational modes.

Evidences of Nonideal Mixing in Poly(ethylene Glycol)/Organic Solvent Mixtures by Brillouin Scattering

The concentration dependence of the hypersonic properties of solutions of poly(ethylene glycol) of mean molecular mass 600 g/mol (PEG600) in benzene and toluene has been investigated by Brillouin scattering. The two solvents are very similar in structure and chemical properties, but while benzene is nonpolar, toluene possess a modest dipole. In both solvents a high-frequency relaxation process has been observed at high concentrations which has been assigned to conformational rearrangements of the polymeric chains, triggered by reorientation of the side groups. In both cases, the concentration dependence of the adiabatic compressibility deviates significantly from linearity, indicating the existence of nonideal mixing phenomena driven by aggregation processes taking place in the systems. However, there is no temperature dependence for solutions of PEG600 in benzene; on the contrary, the results obtained for solutions of PEG600 in toluene are noticeably dependent on the temperature. The comparison of the experimental data with the results of previous experiments on similar systems allows a general picture for weakly interacting mixtures of hydrogen-bonded systems and organic solvents to be developed. In particular, in the presence of a nonpolar solvent molecule the local structure of the mixture is dominated by solute self-association processes and any resulting solute-solvent correlation is barely induced by excluded volume effects. At high enough dilution the self-aggregation of solute molecules produces a variety of new local topologies that cannot be observed in bulk solute, and as a consequence, the concentration evolution of the system is too rich to be described in terms of a linear combination of a few components over the whole concentration range. The situation seems to be simpler for the polar toluene solvent molecules, where a three-component model seems able to fit the experimental concentration dependence of the hypersonic velocity. This result is interpreted to imply that the interaction between the solvent dipoles and the active sites of the solute produces a relatively stable heterocoordination, while the relevance of self-association is partially reduced.

Dynamic light scattering in liquid and supercooled diphenylmethane

We use a dynamic light scattering technique to measure both polarized (VV) and depolarized (VH) spectra of liquid diphenylmethane (DPM) between 288 and 362 K, covering both normal and supercooled liquid ranges. Our results allow extracting information on structural relaxation processes, rotational motions, rotation-translation couplings, and molecular reorientation phenomena in liquid DPM. The VV spectra are modeled according to the microscopic theory of Wang, which assumes that a structural relaxation process dominates the spectrum. We find that the relaxation time of the structural relaxation in DPM follows an Arrhenius behavior. The Rayleigh dip was observed in the VH spectra, which are described using the Andersen-Pecora theory. Our results are discussed in terms of the rotation-translation coupling parameter, which we find independent of temperature over the experimental range. The collective reorientation time also follows an Arrhenius behavior with temperature. Finally, we calculate the hydrodynamic volumes for the reorientation process from geometric molecular models in two hydrodynamic limits: slip and stick boundary conditions. Our results suggest that the DMP molecule reorientates in quasi-slipping conditions in the bulk liquid.
