Evaluation of the SOA Formation in the Reaction of Furfural with Atmospheric Oxidants

An experimental product study of the reactions of furfural with the main tropospheric oxidants (Cl, OH and NO3) has been carried out using a Fourier Transform Infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR) and a gas chromatograph–mass spectrometer with a time of flight detector (GC–TOFMS). The main gas-phase products detected were 5-chloro-2(5H)-furanone, maleic anhydride, 2-nitrofuran and CO. Molar yields were quantified for the detected products in these reactions, thus suggesting the existence of nongaseous products that could not be observed with the analytical techniques employed. The formation of Secondary Organic Aerosol (SOA) from the oxidation of furfural with Cl atoms, OH, NO3 and ozone was investigated in a smog chamber in the absence of inorganic seed aerosols. The experimental results show the formation of ultrafine particles (less than 1 µm in diameter) for all of the studied reactions except for the nitrate radical. Given their small size, these ultrafine particles (<1 µm) can easily penetrate into the respiratory tract and reach the alveolar region. These particles, therefore, have the potential to cause severe damage to the respiratory system. The aerosol yield obtained, Y, was low (<0.04) in all cases, which means that the aerosols generated from furfural, under atmospheric conditions, could have little impact.

ArF and KrF laser-induced gas-phase photolysis of selenophene and tellurophene: extrusion of Te and Se and intramolecular 1,3-H shift competing with beta-C-C cleavage in C4H4 residue

ArF (193 nm) and KrF (248 nm) laser-induced photolysis of gaseous selenophene and tellurophene (C4H4M, M=Se and Te) has been examined. It is shown that, unlike thiophene and furan, selenophene and tellurophene cleave both M-C bonds and yield the elemental heteroatom (Se, Te), 1-buten-3-yne, and ethyne. The proposed mechanism involves an intermediate .HC=CH-CH=CH. diradical that decomposes via two competitive pathways, namely, 1,3-H shift to 1-buten-3-yne and beta-cleavage to two molecules of ethyne. It is shown that the relative importance of the channels depends both on the energy of the photon and on the heteroatom. Specifically, the 1,3-H shift/beta-cleavage ratios are 2.3 (193 nm, M=Se), 3.6 (248 nm, M=Se), 1.4 (193 nm, M=Te), and 10.5 (248 nm, M=Te). The inertness of the Te residuum and the high preference for the 1,3-H shift in KrF laser photolysis of tellurophene suggest that this photolysis can serve as a source of the C4H4 diradical for mechanistic studies.

Ab initio study on the photochemical isomerization of furan derivatives

The photochemical isomerization reactions of furan, 2-methylfuran, 2-trimethylsilylfuran, and furan-2-carbonitrile were studied using ab initio methods. The results are in agreement with the previously reported data obtained through semiempirical methods. In particular, the sensitized irradiation of furan derivatives populates the first excited triplet state of the furan, and this triplet state can evolve only through O-Ca cleavage. The selection of the bond to be broken can depend on energetic factors (furan-2-carbonitrile) or on kinetic factors (2-methylfuran, 2-trimethylsilylfuran). The direct irradiation of furan derivatives populates the singlet excited state and leads to a conversion into the Dewar isomer or into the corresponding triplet state through the usual intersystem crossing procedure. The efficiency of these processes determines the presence or the absence of isomerized furan derivatives in the reaction mixtures.
