A mass spectrometric and density functional study of the intermetallic molecules AuBe, AuMg, and AuCa

Dopant induced modulation in the structure and electronic properties of Au10 cluster

DFT calculations at PBE0/SDD ∪ 6-31++G(d,p) level suggest that doped Au₁₀ clusters (with alkali and alkaline earth metals as dopants) are better potential candidates for use in heterogeneous catalysis.

The uncertain bond energy of the NaAu molecule: experimental redetermination and coupled cluster calculations

The dissociation energy of the intermetallic molecule NaAu, for which two largely at variance experimental values are available in the literature, has been redetermined by the Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry method. The molecule has been produced in the vapor phase by a specially designed experimental setting inspired by the double oven technique. The equilibrium of dissociation to atoms as well as the exchange equilibrium with the gold dimer were monitored mass-spectrometrically over about a 600 K temperature range. The third-law analysis of the equilibrium data provides the dissociation energy D0° (NaAu, g) = 245.3 ± 6.8 kJ/mol, corresponding to a formation enthalpy at 298 K of 228.3 ± 7.5 kJ/mol. The NaAu species was also studied computationally at the CCSD(T) level with basis sets of increasing zeta quality thus allowing to evaluate the molecular parameters and the dissociation energy at the complete basis set limit.

Equilibrium geometries, stabilities, and electronic properties of the cationic Au n Be + (n = 1-8) clusters: comparison with pure gold clusters

Ab initio method based on density functional theory at PW91PW91 level has been applied in studying the geometrical structures, relative stabilities, and electronic properties of small bimetallic Au(n)Be(+) (n = 1-8) cluster cations. The geometrical optimizations indicate that a transition point from preferentially planar (two-dimensional) to three-dimensional (3D) structures occurs at n = 6. The relative stabilities of Au(n)Be(+) clusters for the ground-state structures are analyzed based on the averaged binding energies, fragmentation energies, and second-order difference of energies. The calculated results reveal that the AuBe(+) and Au(5)Be(+) clusters possess higher relative stability for small size Au(n)Be(+) (n = 1-8) clusters. The HOMO-LUMO energy gaps as a function of the cluster size exhibit a pronounced even-odd alternation phenomenon. Sequently, the natural population analysis and polarizability for our systems have been analyzed and compared further.

A systematic search for the structures, stabilities, and electronic properties of bimetallic Ca₂-doped gold clusters: comparison with pure gold clusters

The local meta-GGA exchange correlation density functional (TPSS) with a relativistic effective core potential was employed to systematically investigate the geometric structures, stabilities, and electronic properties of bimetallic Ca(2)Au( n ) (n = 1-9) and pure gold Au( n ) (n ≤ 11) clusters. The optimized geometries show that the most stable isomers for Ca(2)Au( n ) clusters have 3D structure when n > 2, and that one Au atom capping the Ca(2)Au( n-1) structure for different-sized Ca(2)Au( n ) (n = 1-9) clusters is the dominant growth pattern. The average atomic binding energies and second-order difference in energies show that the Ca(2)Au(4) isomer is the most stable among the Ca(2)Au( n ) clusters. The same pronounced even-odd alternations are found in the HOMO-LUMO gaps, VIPs, and hardnesses. The polarizabilities of the Ca(2)Au( n ) clusters show an obvious local minimum at n = 4. Moreover, the inverse corrections to the polarizabilities versus the ionization potential and hardness were found for the gold clusters.

The Electronic Structure of Alkali Aurides. A Four-Component Dirac−Kohn−Sham Study

Spectroscopic constants, including dissociation energies, harmonic and anharmonic vibrational frequencies, and dipole moments, are calculated for the complete alkali auride series (LiAu, NaAu, KAu, RbAu, CsAu). The four-component formulation of relativistic density functional theory has been employed in this study, using the G-spinor basis sets implemented recently in the program BERTHA. The performance of four standard nonrelativistic density functionals employed is investigated by comparing the results with the best available theoretical and experimental data. The present work provides the first theoretical predictions on the molecular properties of RbAu. The intermetallic bond that occurs in the alkali auride series is highly polar and is characterized by a large charge transfer from the alkali metals to gold. The extent of this electron transfer has been investigated using several different charge analysis methods, enabling us to reach some general conclusions on their relative performance. We further report a detailed analysis of the topological properties of relativistic electron density in the bonding region, discussing the features of this approach which characterize the nature of the chemical bond. We have also computed the fully relativistic density for the alkali halides MBr and MI (M = Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs). The comparative study shows that, on the basis of several topological properties and the variation in bond lengths, the gold atom behaves similarly to a halogen intermediate between Br and I.
