Abstract
Organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs), with the capability of simultaneously functioning as a light-emitting stack and a thin-film transistor, have received considerable attention for potential applications in active-matrix flat-panel displays. Here, we demonstrate host-free deep-blue OLETs based on a novel small-molecule fluorescent emitter, 10,10'-bis(4-(1-phenyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)phenyl)-10H,10'H-9,9'-spirobi[acridine] (SPA-PBI), and a high-k dielectric, cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) polymer. The deep-blue OLETs based on 2,2',2″-(1,3,5-benzinetriyl)-tris(1-phenyl-1-H-benzimidazole) (TPBi) as an electron-transport layer showed an extraordinarily high hole mobility of 4.6 cm2 V-1 s-1, a brightness of 570 cd m-2 under a low gate and source-drain voltages of -24 V, and an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 0.87% at 100 cd m-2. Besides, an electroluminescence peak was observed to be at 432 nm and the corresponding CIE coordinates were as deep as (0.16, 0.08). By replacing TPBi with TmPyPB as the electron-transport layer (ETL), the electron transport and hole blocking capability were greatly improved, which led to ∼60% enhancement of the EQE (1.39% at 100 cd m-2). These results suggest that using a highly twisted double-donor-acceptor emitter with rationally optimized charge injection could lead to highly efficient deep-blue OLETs.

Abstract

We
describe a general scheme to obtain force-field parameters for
classical molecular dynamics simulations of conjugated polymers. We
identify a computationally inexpensive methodology for calculation
of accurate intermonomer dihedral potentials and partial charges.
Our findings indicate that the use of a two-step methodology of geometry
optimization and single-point energy calculations using DFT methods
produces potentials which compare favorably to high level theory calculation.
We also report the effects of varying the conjugated backbone length
and alkyl side-chain lengths on the dihedral profiles and partial
charge distributions and determine the existence of converged lengths
above which convergence is achieved in the force-field parameter sets.
We thus determine which calculations are required for accurate parametrization
and the scope of a given parameter set for variations to a given molecule.
We perform simulations of long oligomers of dioctylfluorene and hexylthiophene
in explicit solvent and find peristence lengths and end-length distributions
consistent with experimental values.

Abstract
The specific optical absorption of an organic semiconductor is critical to the performance of organic optoelectronic devices. For example, higher light-harvesting efficiency can lead to higher photocurrent in solar cells that are limited by sub-optimal electrical transport. Here, we compare over 40 conjugated polymers, and find that many different chemical structures share an apparent maximum in their extinction coefficients. However, a diketopyrrolopyrrole-thienothiophene copolymer shows remarkably high optical absorption at relatively low photon energies. By investigating its backbone structure and conformation with measurements and quantum chemical calculations, we find that the high optical absorption can be explained by the high persistence length of the polymer. Accordingly, we demonstrate high absorption in other polymers with high theoretical persistence length. Visible light harvesting may be enhanced in other conjugated polymers through judicious design of the structure.

Abstract
Conformational disorder in π-conjugated cyclic systems plays a crucial role in controlling the extent of exciton delocalization in much the same way as that in linear counterparts. However, to date, there have been no detailed spectroscopic investigations on the nature of excitons in π-conjugated cyclic systems at the single-molecule level. Herein, we studied the effect of conformational disorder on the excitonic behaviors of cyclic oligothiophenes composed of 6, 8, 10, and 12 subunits (C-6T, C-8T, C-10T, and C-12T, respectively) by employing single-molecule fluorescence spectroscopy. We found that, due to the cyclic symmetry constraint which suppresses S1-S0 transition, small and rigid C-6T and C-8T exhibit extremely long fluorescence lifetimes, while short lifetimes typical of linear systems are dominant in large, flexible C-10T and C-12T. Two-dimensional correlation maps between fluorescence lifetimes and spectral positions show that, by torsional defects created through continued photoexcitation, fully delocalized cyclic excitons shrink to form acyclic excitons in the case of C-10T, while localized acyclic excitons from initial states are maintained in the case of C-12T. The distribution of linear dichroism values from C-6T to C-10T gradually broadens but narrows in C-12T, suggesting a cyclic-to-acyclic transition in excitonic nature between C-10T and C-12T.

The diffusion of p-nitrotoluene vapours into polymer or dendrimer sensing films follows Super Case II dynamics in which the quenching efficiency is strongly correlated to an accelerating analyte front propagating through the neat film rather than being reliant on exciton diffusion.

Abstract
Charge trapping is taken for granted in modeling the characteristics of organic semiconductor devices, but very few techniques actually exist to spectroscopically pinpoint trap states. For example, trap levels are often assumed to be discrete in energy. Using the well-known keto defect in polyfluorene as a model, we demonstrate how single-molecule spectroscopy can directly track the formation of charge and exciton traps in conjugated polymers in real time, providing crucial information on the energetic distribution of trap sites relative to the polymer optical gap. Charge traps with universal spectral fingerprints scatter by almost 1 eV in depth, implying that substantial heterogeneity must be taken into account when modeling devices.

Abstract
Star-shaped molecules are of growing interest as organic optoelectronic materials. Here a detailed study of their photophysics using fluorescence depolarisation is reported. Fluorescence depolarisation dynamics are studied in branched oligofluorene-truxene molecules with a truxene core and well-defined three-fold symmetry, and are compared with linear fluorene oligomers. An initial anisotropy value of 0.4 is observed which shows a two-exponential decay with time constants of 500 fs and 3-8 ps in addition to a long-lived component. The femtosecond component is attributed to exciton localisation on one branch of the molecule and its amplitude reduces when the excitation is tuned to the low energy tail of the absorption spectrum. The picosecond component shows a weak dependence on the excitation wavelength and is similar to the calculated rate of the resonant energy transfer of the localised exciton between the branches. These assignments are supported by density-functional theory calculations which show a disorder-induced splitting of the two degenerate excited states. Exciton localisation is much slower than previously reported in other branched molecules which suggests that efficient light-harvesting systems can be designed using oligofluorenes and truxenes as building blocks.
