Angular and energy distribution of fragment ions in dissociative double photoionization of acetylene molecules at 39 eV

Smallest Organic Tetracation in the Gas Phase: Stability of Multiply Charged Diiodoacetylene Produced in Intense Femtosecond Laser Fields

Coulomb explosion imaging, which is the reconstruction of a molecular structure by measuring the three-dimensional momenta of atomic ions formed by a Coulomb explosion of multiply charged molecular cations (MMCs), has been utilized widely. In contrast, intact MMCs, whose properties and reactions are interesting from both fundamental and applied scientific perspectives, themselves have been little explored to date. This study demonstrates that the four-atom molecule diiodoacetylene (DIA) can survive as a long-lived species in the gas phase after the removal of four electrons in intense femtosecond laser fields. The electron configurations of the equilibrium structures of the electronic ground states calculated by the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) method reveal the stability of multiply charged DIA. The dissociation energies are estimated to be 3.01, 3.59, 2.57, 1.82, and 1.61 eV for neutral, cation radical, dication, trication radical, and tetracation, respectively. A fairly deep potential well suggests that a DIA tetracation is metastable toward dissociation, whereas the repulsive potential of a pentacation radical confirms its absence in the mass spectrum. With their sufficiently long lifetimes, minimum number of atoms, and simple dissociation paths, DIA MMCs are promising candidates for further experimental and theoretical investigations of multiply charged ion chemistry.

Coincident angle-resolved state-selective photoelectron spectroscopy of acetylene molecules: a candidate system for time-resolved dynamics

The acetylene-vinylidene system serves as a benchmark for investigations of ultrafast dynamical processes where the coupling of the electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom provides a fertile playground to explore the femto- and sub-femto-second physics with coherent extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) photon sources both on the table-top as well as free-electron lasers. We focus on detailed investigations of this molecular system in the photon energy range 19-40 eV where EUV pulses can probe the dynamics effectively. We employ photoelectron-photoion coincidence (PEPICO) spectroscopy to uncover hitherto unrevealed aspects of this system. In this work, the role of excited states of the C2H2+ cation, the primary photoion, is specifically addressed. From photoelectron energy spectra and angular distributions, the nature of the dissociation and isomerization channels is discerned. Exploiting the 4π-collection geometry of the velocity map imaging spectrometer, we not only probe pathways where the efficiency of photoionization is inherently high but also perform PEPICO spectroscopy on relatively weak channels.

Production and Characterization of Molecular Dications: Experimental and Theoretical Efforts

Molecular dications are doubly charged cations of importance in flames, plasma chemistry and physics and in the chemistry of the upper atmosphere of Planets. Furthermore, they are exotic species able to store a considerable amount of energy at a molecular level. This high energy content of several eV can be easily released as translational energy of the two fragment monocations generated by their Coulomb explosion. For such a reason, they were proposed as a new kind of alternative propellant. The present topic review paper reports on an overview of the main contributions made by the authors’ research groups in the generation and characterization of simple molecular dications during the last 40 years of coupling experimental and theoretical efforts.

Angular Distribution of Ion Products in the Double Photoionization of Propylene Oxide

A photoelectron-photoion-photoion coincidence technique, using an ion imaging detector and tunable synchrotron radiation in the 18.0–37.0 eV photon energy range, inducing the ejection of molecular valence electrons, has been applied to study the double ionization of the propylene oxide, a simple prototype chiral molecule. The experiment performed at the Elettra Synchrotron Facility (Trieste, Italy) allowed to determine angular distributions for ions produced by the two-body dissociation reactions following the Coulomb explosion of the intermediate (C₃H₆O)²⁺ molecular dication. The analysis of the coincidence spectra recorded at different photon energies was done in order to determine the dependence of the β anisotropy parameter on the photon energy for the investigated two-body fragmentation channels. In particular, the reaction leading to CH3+ + C₂H₃O⁺ appears to be characterized by an increase of β, from β ≈ 0.00 up to β = 0.59, as the photon energy increases from 29.7 to 37.0 eV, respectively. This new observation confirms that the dissociation channel producing CH3+ and C₂H₃O⁺ final ions can occur with two different microscopic mechanisms as already indicated by the bimodality obtained in the kinetic energy released (KER) distributions as a function of the photon energy in a recent study. Energetic considerations suggest that experimental data are compatible with the formation of two different stable isomers of C₂H₃O⁺: acetyl and oxiranyl cations. These new experimental data are inherently relevant and are mandatory information for further experimental and theoretical investigations involving oriented chiral molecules and linearly or circularly polarized radiation. Proton migration in hydrocarbons induced by slow highly charged ion impact

Different from most of the previous studies using light or photons, we use highly charged ions as projectiles to activate proton migration in the smallest saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbon molecules, i.e., CH₄ and C₂H₂. The H₃ ⁺ formation channel (H₃ ⁺ + CH⁺) and isomerization channel (C⁺ + CH₂ ⁺), serving as indicators of proton migration, are observed in the fragmentation of CH₄ and C₂H₂ dications. Corresponding kinematical information, i.e., kinetic energy release, is for the first time obtained in the collisions with highly charged ions. In particular, for the C⁺ + CH₂ ⁺ channel, a new pathway is identified, which is tentatively attributed to the isomerization on high-lying states of acetylene dication. The kinetic energy release spectra for other two-body breakup channels are also determined and precursor dication states could thus be identified.

Dependence on the Initial Configuration of Strong Field-Driven Isomerization of C2H2 Cations and Anions

We have investigated the femtosecond laser-induced fragmentation of C₂H₂ ^q ion beam targets in various initial configurations, including acetylene (linear HCCH), vinylidene (H₂CC), and cis/ trans. The initial configuration is shown to have a tremendous impact on the branching ratio of acetylene-like (CH ^q₁ + CH ^q₂) and vinylidene-like (C ^q₁' + CH₂ ^q₂') dissociation of a specific C₂H₂ ^q molecular ion. In particular, whereas C₂H₂⁺ generated from C₂H₂, a linear HCCH target, exhibits comparable levels of acetylene-like and vinylidene-like fragmentation, vinylidene or cis/ trans configuration ion beams preferably undergo vinylidene-like fragmentation, with an acetylene branching ratio ranging from 13.9% to zero.

Double photoionization of propylene oxide: A coincidence study of the ejection of a pair of valence-shell electrons

Propylene oxide, a favorite target of experimental and theoretical studies of circular dichroism, was recently discovered in interstellar space, further amplifying the attention to its role in the current debate on protobiological homochirality. In the present work, a photoelectron-photoion-photoion coincidence technique, using an ion-imaging detector and tunable synchrotron radiation in the 18.0-37.0 eV energy range, permits us (i) to observe six double ionization fragmentation channels, their relative yields being accounted for about two-thirds by the couple (C₂H₄⁺, CH₂O⁺) and one-fifth by (C₂H₃⁺, CH₃O⁺); (ii) to measure thresholds for their openings as a function of photon energy; and (iii) to unravel a pronounced bimodality for a kinetic-energy-released distribution, fingerprint of competitive non-adiabatic mechanisms.

Chemical Characterization of Lodoicea maldivica Fruit

In the present study, we report the attempt to characterize the chemical composition of fruit kernel of Lodoicea maldivica coco nucifera palm (commonly named as 'Coco de mer') by gas chromatographic method. The analysis was performed by HS-SPME and GC/MS techniques to determine volatile aroma, sterol, and fatty acid composition profiles in the internal and external pulp of two distinct coconuts. Although no qualitative differences in flavour composition were observed between the two analysed coconuts and the relative two pulp parts, variations in the abundance levels of the prominent compounds have been recorded. The averaged quantity of total phytosterols, resulting from the two analysed 'Coco de mer' samples, was almost constant in both kernels coconut, being 24.5 μg/g (of dry net matter) for the external, and 26.9 μg/g (of dry net matter) for the internal portion. In both coconuts, the fatty acid pattern composition was characterized by seven saturated acids ranged from C14:0 (myristic) to C20:0 (arachidic) and two monounsaturated acids, the palmitoleic (C16:1, ω7) and the oleic (C18:1, ω9). Palmitic acid (C16:0) was the predominant one with an average contribution of about 49.0%, followed by pentadecanoic 16.5%, stearic (C18:0) 11.6%, and myristic (C14:0) 9.9% acids in all two examined kernel portions.

Ultrafast electron diffraction imaging of bond breaking in di-ionized acetylene

Visualizing chemical reactions as they occur requires atomic spatial and femtosecond temporal resolution. Here, we report imaging of the molecular structure of acetylene (C₂H₂) 9 femtoseconds after ionization. Using mid-infrared laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED), we obtained snapshots as a proton departs the [C₂H₂]²⁺ ion. By introducing an additional laser field, we also demonstrate control over the ultrafast dissociation process and resolve different bond dynamics for molecules oriented parallel versus perpendicular to the LIED field. These measurements are in excellent agreement with a quantum chemical description of field-dressed molecular dynamics.

Phenomena are described within a unifying picture, by isolating charge/electron transfer as an interaction component triggering chemical reactivity.

Stereoselectivity in Autoionization Reactions of Hydrogenated Molecules by Metastable Noble Gas Atoms: The Role of Electronic Couplings

Focus in the present paper is on the analysis of total and partial ionization cross sections, measured in absolute value as a function of the collision energy, representative of the probability of ionic product formation in selected electronic states in Ne*-H2 O, H2 S, and NH3 collisions. In order to characterize the imaginary part of the optical potential, related to electronic couplings, we generalize a methodology to obtain direct information on the opacity function of these reactions. Such a methodology has been recently exploited to test the real part of the optical potential (S. Falcinelli et al., Chem. Eur. J., 2016, 22, 764-771). Depending on the balance of noncovalent contributions, the real part controls the approach of neutral reactants, the removal of ionic products, and the structure of the transition state. Strength, range, and stereoselectivity of electronic couplings, triggering these and many other reactions, are directly obtained from the present investigation.

The soft X-ray absorption spectrum of the allyl free radical

The first experimental study of the X-ray absorption spectrum (XAS) of the allyl free radical, CH(2)CHCH(2), is reported. A supersonic He seeded beam of hyperthermal allyl radicals was crossed by a high resolution synchrotron radiation (SR) in the focus of a 3D ion momentum imaging time-of-flight (TOF) spectrometer to investigate the soft X-ray absorption and fragmentation processes. The XAS, recorded as Total-Ion-Yield (TIY), is dominated by C1s electron excitations from either the central carbon atom, C(C), or the two terminal carbon atoms, C(T), to the frontier orbitals, the semi-occupied-molecular-orbital (SOMO) and the lowest-unoccupied-molecular-orbital (LUMO). All of the intense features in the XAS could only be assigned with the aid of ab initio spectral simulation at the Multi-Configuration Self-Consistent-Field (MCSCF) level of theory, this level being required because of the multi-reference nature of the core-excited state wavefunctions of the open shell molecule. The ionization energies (IEs) of the singlet and triplet states of the C1s ionized allyl radical (XPS) were also calculated at the MCSCF level.
