Abstract
Hypothesis Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) is a powerful technique for studying soft matter systems such as colloids, polymers, and lyotropic phases, providing nanoscale structural insights. However, its effectiveness is limited by low neutron flux, leading to long acquisition times and noisy data. We hypothesize that Bayesian statistical inference using Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) can reconstruct high-fidelity scattering data from sparse measurements by leveraging intensity smoothness and continuity. Experiments and Simulations The method was benchmarked computationally and validated through SANS experiments on various soft matter systems, including wormlike micelles, colloidal suspensions, polymeric structures, and lyotropic phases. GPR-based inference was applied to both experimental and synthetic data to evaluate its effectiveness in noise reduction and intensity reconstruction. Findings GPR significantly enhances SANS data quality and therefore reducing measurement times by up to two orders of magnitude. This cost-effective approach maximizes experimental efficiency, enabling high-throughput studies and real-time monitoring of dynamic systems. It is particularly beneficial for weakly scattering and time-sensitive studies. Beyond SANS, this framework applies to other low-SNR techniques, including laboratory-based small-angle X-ray scattering and various dynamical scattering methods. Furthermore, it offers transformative potential for compact neutron sources, enhancing their viability for structural analysis in resource-limited settings.

Abstract
As a special type of branched polymers, comb-like polymers simultaneously possess the structural characteristics of a linear backbone profile and crowded sidechain branches/grafts, and such structural uniqueness leads to reduced interchain entanglement, enhanced molecular orientation, and unique stimulus-response behavior, which greatly expands the potential applications in the fields of super-soft elastomers, molecular sensors, lubricants, photonic crystals, etc. In principle, all these molecular features can be traced back to three structural parameters, i.e., the degree of polymerization of the backbone (Nb), the degree of polymerization of the graft sidechain (Ng), and the grafting density (σ). Consequently, it is of great importance to understand the correlation mechanism between the structural characteristics and physicochemical properties, among which, the conformational properties in dilute solution have received the most attention due to its central position in polymer science. In the past decades, the development of synthetic chemistry and characterization techniques has greatly stimulated the progress of this field, and a number of experiments have been executed to verify the conformational properties; however, due to the complexity of the structural parameters and the diversity of the chemical design, the achieved experimental progress displays significant controversies compared with the theoretical predictions. This review aims to provide a full picture of recent research progress on this topic, specifically, (1) first, a few classical theoretical models regarding the chain conformation are introduced, and the quasi-two-parameter (QTP) theory for the conformation analysis is highlighted; (2) second, the research progress of the static conformation of comb-like polymers in dilute solution is discussed; (3) third, the research progress of the dynamic conformation in dilute solution is further discussed. The key issues, existing controversies and future research directions are also highlighted. We hope that this review can provide insightful information for the understanding of the conformational properties of comb-like polymers, open a new door for the regulation of conformational behavior in related applications, and promote related theoretical and experimental research in the community.

Abstract
We performed molecular dynamics simulations of DNA polymer chains confined in helical nano-channels under compression in order to explore the potential of knot-factories with helical geometry to produce knots with a preferred handedness. In our simulations, we explore mutual effect of the confinement strength and compressive forces in a range covering weak, intermediate and strong confinement together with weak and strong compressive forces. The results find that while the common metrics of polymer chain in cylindrical and helical channels are very similar, the DNA in helical channels exhibits greatly different topology in terms of chain knottedness, writhe and handedness of knots. The results show that knots with a preferred chirality in terms of average writhe can be produced by using channels with a chosen handedness.

Abstract
We outline a machine learning strategy for quantitively determining the conformation of AB-type diblock copolymers with excluded volume effects using small angle scattering. Complemented by computer simulations, a correlation matrix connecting conformations of different copolymers according to their scattering features is established on the mathematical framework of a Gaussian process, a multivariate extension of the familiar univariate Gaussian distribution. We show that the relevant conformational characteristics of copolymers can be probabilistically inferred from their coherent scattering cross sections without any restriction imposed by model assumptions. This work not only facilitates the quantitative structural analysis of copolymer solutions but also provides the reliable benchmarking for the related theoretical development of scattering functions.

Abstract
Mixtures of semiflexible polymers with a mismatch in either their persistence lengths or their contour lengths are studied by Density Functional Theory and Molecular Dynamics simulation. Considering lyotropic solutions under good solvent conditions, the mole fraction and pressure is systematically varied for several cases of bending stiffness κ (the normalized persistence length) and chain length N. For binary mixtures with different chain length (i.e., NA=16, NB=32 or 64) but the same stiffness, isotropic-nematic phase coexistence is studied. For mixtures with the same chain length (N=32) and large stiffness disparity (κB/κA=4.9 to 8), both isotropic-nematic and nematic-nematic unmixing occur. It is found that the phase diagrams may exhibit a triple point or a nematic-nematic critical point, and that coexisting phases differ appreciably in their monomer densities. The properties of the two types of chains (nematic order parameters, chain radii, etc.) in the various phases are studied in detail, and predictions on the (anisotropic) critical behavior near the critical point of nematic-nematic unmixing are made.

Abstract
As an important physical quantity to understand the internal structure of polymer chains, the structure factor is being studied both in theory and experiment. Theoretically, the structure factor of Gaussian chains has been solved analytically, but for wormlike chains, numerical approaches are often used, such as Monte Carlo simulations, solving the modified diffusion equation. In these works, the structure factor needs to be calculated differently for different regions of the wave vector and chain rigidity, and some calculation processes are resource consuming. In this work, by training a deep neural network, we obtained an efficient model to calculate the structure factor of polymer chains, without considering different regions of wavenumber and chain rigidity. Furthermore, based on the trained neural network model, we predicted the contour and Kuhn lengths of some polymer chains by using scattering experimental data, and we found that our model can get pretty reasonable predictions. This work provides a method to obtain the structure factor for polymer chains, which is as good as previous and more computationally efficient. It also provides a potential way for the experimental researchers to measure the contour and Kuhn lengths of polymer chains.

Abstract
Density functional theory of rod-coil diblock copolymers, developed recently by the authors, has been generalised and used to study the liquid crystal ordering and microphase separation effects in the hexagonal, lamellar and nematic phases. The translational order parameters of rod and coil monomers and the orientational order parameters of rod-like fragments of the copolymer chains have been determined numerically by direct minimization of the free energy. The phase diagram has been derived containing the isotropic, the lamellar and the hexagonal phases which is consistent with typical experimental data. The order parameter profiles as functions of temperature and the copolymer composition have also been determined in different anisotropic phases. Finally, the spatial distributions of the density of rigid rod fragments and of the corresponding orientational order parameter in the hexagonal phase have been calculated.

Abstract
The conformation and distribution of a flexible and semiflexible chain confined in an array of nanoposts arranged in parallel way in a square-lattice projection of their cross-section was investigated using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. The geometry of the nanopost array was varied at the constant post diameter dp and the ensuing modifications of the chain conformation were compared with the structural behavior of the chain in the series of nanopost arrays with the constant post separation Sp as well as with the constant distance between two adjacent post walls (passage width) wp. The free energy arguments based on an approximation of the array of nanopost to a composite of quasi-channels of diameter dc and quasi-slits of height wp provide semiqualitative explanations for the observed structural behavior of both chains. At constant post separation and passage width, the occupation number displays a monotonic decrease with the increasing geometry ratio dc/wp or volume fraction of posts, while a maximum is observed at constant post diameter. The latter finding is attributed to a relaxed conformation of the chains at small dc/wp ratio, which results from a combination of wide interstitial volumes and wide passage apertures. This maximum is approximately positioned at the same dc/wp value for both flexible and semiflexible chains. The chain expansion from a single interstitial volume into more interstitial volumes also starts at the same value of dc/wp ratio for both chains. The dependence of the axial chain extension on the dc/wp ratio turns out to be controlled by the diameter of the interstitial space and by the number of monomers in the individual interstitial volumes. If these two factors act in the same way on the axial extension of chain fragments in interstitial volumes the monotonic increase of the axial chain extension with the dc/wp in the nanopost arrays is observed. At constant wp, however, these two factors act in opposite way and the axial chain extension plotted against the dc/wp ratio exhibits a maximum. In the case of constant post diameter, the characteristic hump in the single chain structure factor whose position correlates with the post separation is found only in the structure factor of the flexible chain confined in the nanopost array of certain value of Sp. The structure factor of the flexible chain contains more information on the monomer organization and mutual correlations than the structure factor of the semiflexible chain. The stiffer chain confined in the nanopost array is composed of low number of statistical segments important for the presence of respective hierarchical regimes in the structure factor.

Abstract
We use computer simulations to study the relaxation of strongly deformed highly entangled polymer melts in the nonlinear viscoelastic regime, focusing on anisotropic chain conformations after isochoric elongation. The Doi-Edwards tube model and its Graham-Likhtman-McLeish-Milner (GLaMM) extension, incorporating contour length fluctuation and convective constraint release, predict a retraction of the polymer chain extension in all directions, setting in immediately after deformation. This prediction has been challenged by experiment, simulation, and other theoretical studies, questioning the general validity of the tube concept. For very long chains we observe the initial contraction of the chain extension parallel and perpendicular to the stretching direction. However, the effect is significantly weaker than predicted by the GLaMM model. We also show that the first anisotropic term of an expansion of the 2D scattering function qualitatively agrees to predictions of the GLaMM model, providing an option for direct experimental tests.

Abstract
The structural properties of a flexible and semiflexible circular chain confined in an array of parallel nanoposts with a square lattice cross-sectional projection were studied using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. To address the effect of the circular topology, a comparison with linear analogs was also carried out. In the interpretation of the chain structural properties, the geometry of the post array is considered as a combination of a channel approximating the interstitial volume with the diameter dc and a slit approximating the passage aperture with the width wp. The number of interstitial volumes occupied by a chain monotonically increases with the decreasing ratio dc/wp regardless of the way the geometry of the post array is varied. However, depending on how the array geometry is modified, the chain span along the posts displays a monotonic (constant post separation) or a non-monotonic behavior (constant passage width) when plotted as a function of the post diameter. In the case of monotonic trend, the width of interstitial spaces increases with the increasing chain occupation number, while, in the case of non-monotonic trend, the width of interstitial spaces decreases with the increasing chain occupation number. In comparison with linear topology, for circular topology, the stiffness affects more significantly the relative chain extension along the posts and less significantly the occupation number. The geometrical parameters of the post arrays are stored in the single-chain structure factors. The characteristic humps are recognized in the structure factor which ensue from the local increase in the density of segments in the circular chains presented in an interstitial volume or from the correlation of parallel chain fragments separated by a row of posts. Although the orientation correlations provide qualitative information about the chain topology and the character of confinement within a single interstitial volume, information about the array periodicity is missing.

Abstract
The structural properties of novel melt-spun polymer optical fibers (POFs) are investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering. The amorphous PMMA POFs were subjected to a rapid cooling in a water quench right after extrusion in order to obtain a radial refractive index profile. Four fiber samples were investigated with small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The resulting distance-distribution functions obtained from the respective equatorial and meridional SAXS data exhibit a real-space correlation peak indicative of periodic cross-sectional and axial variations in the scattering density contrast. Simple model calculations demonstrate how the structural information contained particularly in the equatorial distance distribution function can be interpreted. The respective results are qualitatively verified for one of the fiber samples by comparison of the model curve with the measured SAXS data. Eventually, the study confirms that the cross-sectional variation of the (scattering-) density is the main reason for the formation of radial refractive-index profiles in the POFs.

Abstract
We use stochastic simulation techniques to sample the conformational space of linear semiflexible polymers in a crowded medium and study how the knotting properties depend on the crowder size and concentration. The abundance of physical knots in the chains, which for definiteness we model on 10 kb long DNA filaments, is shown to have a non-monotonic, unimodal dependence on the colloid diameter, dc. The maximum incidence of knots occurs when dc is about equal to half of the gyration radius of the isolated chain. The degree of enhancement of knots grows rapidly with the solution density and can be very conspicuous relative to the case of isolated chains with no crowders. For instance, at 30% volume fraction the relative increase is more than fourfold. This dramatic enhancement is shown to originate from the depletion-induced chain compaction over multiple and concurring length scales. The same effect accounts for the variations of the knot length that accompany the changes in knotting probability. The findings suggest that crowded media could be viably used as a passive physical means for controlling and modulating the incidence and length of knots in DNA and other types of semiflexible polymers.

Abstract
Single linear polymer chains in dilute solutions under good solvent conditions are studied by Monte Carlo simulations with the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method up to the chain length N~O(10(4)). Based on the standard simple cubic lattice model (SCLM) with fixed bond length and the bond fluctuation model (BFM) with bond lengths in a range between 2 and √10, we investigate the conformations of polymer chains described by self-avoiding walks on the simple cubic lattice, and by random walks and non-reversible random walks in the absence of excluded volume interactions. In addition to flexible chains, we also extend our study to semiflexible chains for different stiffness controlled by a bending potential. The persistence lengths of chains extracted from the orientational correlations are estimated for all cases. We show that chains based on the BFM are more flexible than those based on the SCLM for a fixed bending energy. The microscopic differences between these two lattice models are discussed and the theoretical predictions of scaling laws given in the literature are checked and verified. Our simulations clarify that a different mapping ratio between the coarse-grained models and the atomistically realistic description of polymers is required in a coarse-graining approach due to the different crossovers to the asymptotic behavior.

Abstract
We investigated the recently suggested advantageous analysis of chain linearization experiments with macromolecules confined in a stripe-like channel (Huang and Battacharya, EPL, 2014, 106, 18004) using Monte Carlo simulations. The enhanced chain extension in a stripe, which is due to the significant excluded volume interactions between the monomers in two dimensions, weakens considerably on transition to an experimentally feasible slit-like channel. Based on the chain extension-confinement strength dependence and the structure factor behavior for a chain in a stripe, we infer the excluded volume regime (de Gennes regime) typical for two-dimensional systems. On widening of the stripe in a direction perpendicular to the stripe plane, i.e. on the transition to the slab geometry, the advantageous chain extension decreases and a Gaussian regime is observed for not very long semiflexible chains. The evidence for pseudo-ideality in confined chains is based on four indicators: the extension curves, variation of the extension with the persistence length P, estimated limits for the regimes in the investigated systems, and the structure factor behavior. The slab behavior can be observed when the two-dimensional stripe (originally of a one-monomer thickness) reaches a reduced thickness D larger than approximately D/P ≈ 0.2 in the third dimension. This maximum height of a slab at which the advantage of a stripe is retained is very low and has implications for DNA linearization experiments.

Abstract
An efficient and convenient numerical approach to calculate the structure factor of a wormlike chain model is proposed by directly dealing with a formal solution of the Green's function. A precise numerical representation of the structure factor of the wormlike chain model is then obtained, for arbitrary chain rigidity. On one hand, in the flexible limit, the numerical results recover the well-known Debye function of the structure factor of a Gaussian chain and furthermore predict the correct large-k behavior that a Gaussian model fails to capture; on the other hand, in the rigid limit, the numerical results recover the well-known Neugebauer function of the structure factor of a rigid rod. Based on the calculated structure factor, the random phase approximation is employed to study the physical properties of the order-disorder transition for asymmetric wormlike diblock copolymers; particularly, the spinodal line of the disordered phase is calculated. For the case of symmetric diblock copolymer microphase separation, the present calculation reproduces the phase boundary previously determined by self-consistent field theories and yields the entire picture crossing over from the flexible-chain limit to the rigid-chain limit.

Abstract
The details surrounding the cross-over from wormlike-specific to universal polymeric behavior has been the subject of debate and confusion even for the simple case of a dilute, unconfined wormlike chain. We have directly computed the polymer size, form factor, free energy and Kirkwood diffusivity for unconfined wormlike chains as a function of molecular weight, focusing on persistence lengths and effective widths that represent single-stranded and double-stranded DNA in a high ionic strength buffer. To do so, we use a chain-growth Monte Carlo algorithm, the Pruned-Enriched Rosenbluth Method (PERM), which allows us to estimate equilibrium and near-equilibrium dynamic properties of wormlike chains over an extremely large range of contour lengths. From our calculations, we find that very large DNA chains (≈ 1,000,000 base pairs depending on the choice of size metric) are required to reach flexible, swollen non-draining coils. Furthermore, our results indicate that the commonly used model polymer λ-DNA (48,500 base pairs) does not exhibit "ideal" scaling, but exists in the middle of the transition to long-chain behavior. We subsequently conclude that typical DNA used in experiments are too short to serve as an accurate model of long-chain, universal polymer behavior.
