Importance of many-body correlations in glass transition: An example from polydisperse hard spheres

Effect of the presence of pinned particles on the structural parameters of a liquid and correlation between structure and dynamics at the local level

Pinning particles at the equilibrium configuration of the liquid is expected not to affect the structure and any property that depends on the structure while slowing down the dynamics. This leads to a breakdown of the structure dynamics correlation. Here, we calculate two structural quantities: the pair excess entropy, S2, and the mean field caging potential, the inverse of which is our structural order parameter (SOP). We show that when the pinned particles are treated the same way as the mobile particles, both S2 and SOP of the mobile particles remain the same as those of the unpinned system, and the structure dynamics correlation decreases with an increase in pinning density, "c." However, when we treat the pinned particles as a different species, even if we consider that the structure does not change, the expression of S2 and SOP changes. The microscopic expressions show that the interaction between a pinned particle and a mobile particle affects S2 and SOP more than the interaction between two mobile particles. We show that a similar effect is also present in the calculation of the excess entropy and is the primary reason for the well-known vanishing of the configurational entropy at high temperatures. We further show that, contrary to the common belief, the pinning process does change the structure. When these two effects are considered, both S2 and SOP decrease with an increase in "c," and the correlation between the structural parameters and the dynamics continues even for higher values of "c."

Dynamic heterogeneity in polydisperse systems: A comparative study of the role of local structural order parameter and particle size

In polydisperse systems, describing the structure and any structural order parameter (SOP) is not trivial as it varies with the number of species we use to describe the system, M. Depending on the degree of polydispersity, there is an optimum value of M = M0 where we show that the mutual information of the system increases. However, surprisingly, the correlation between a recently proposed SOP and the dynamics is highest for M = 1. This effect increases with polydispersity. We find that the SOP at M = 1 is coupled with the particle size, σ, and this coupling increases with polydispersity and decreases with an increase in M. Careful analysis shows that at lower polydispersities, the SOP is a good predictor of the dynamics. However, at higher polydispersity, the dynamics is strongly dependent on σ. Since the coupling between the SOP and σ is higher for M = 1, it appears to be a better predictor of the dynamics. We also study the Vibrality, an order parameter independent of structural information. Compared to SOP, at high polydispersity, we find Vibrality to be a marginally better predictor of the dynamics. However, this high predictive power of Vibrality, which is not there at lower polydispersity, appears to be due to its stronger coupling with σ. Therefore, our study suggests that for systems with high polydispersity, the correlation of any order parameter and σ will affect the correlation between the order parameter and dynamics and need not project a generic predictive power of the order parameter.

Structural Signatures of Ultrastability in a Deposited Glassformer

Glasses obtained from vapor deposition on a cold substrate have superior thermodynamic and kinetic stability with respect to ordinary glasses. Here we perform molecular dynamics simulations of vapor deposition of a model glassformer and investigate the origin of its high stability compared to that of ordinary glasses. We find that the vapor deposited glass is characterized by locally favored structures (LFSs) whose occurrence correlates with its stability, reaching a maximum at the optimal deposition temperature. The formation of LFSs is enhanced near the free surface, hence supporting the idea that the stability of vapor deposited glasses is connected to the relaxation dynamics at the surface.

Choice of diameters in a polydisperse model glassformer: Deterministic or stochastic?

In particle-based computer simulations of polydisperse glassforming systems, the particle diameters σ=σ_{1},⋯,σ_{N} of a system with N particles are chosen with the intention to approximate a desired distribution density f with the corresponding histogram. One method to accomplish this is to draw each diameter randomly and independently from the density f. We refer to this stochastic scheme as model S. Alternatively, one can apply a deterministic method, assigning an appropriate set of N values to the diameters. We refer to this method as model D. We show that, for sample-to-sample fluctuations, especially for the glassy dynamics at low temperatures, it matters whether one chooses model S or model D. Using molecular dynamics computer simulations, we investigate a three-dimensional polydisperse nonadditive soft-sphere system with f(s)∼s^{-3}. The swap Monte Carlo method is employed to obtain equilibrated samples at very low temperatures. We show that for model S the sample-to-sample fluctuations due to the quenched disorder imposed by the diameters σ can be explained by an effective packing fraction. Dynamic susceptibilities in model S can be split into two terms: one that is of thermal nature and can be identified with the susceptibility of model D, and another one originating from the disorder in σ. At low temperatures the latter contribution is the dominating term in the dynamic susceptibility. Our study clarifies the pros and cons of the use of models S and D in practice.

Bottom-up Coarse-Graining: Principles and Perspectives

Large-scale computational molecular models provide scientists a means to investigate the effect of microscopic details on emergent mesoscopic behavior. Elucidating the relationship between variations on the molecular scale and macroscopic observable properties facilitates an understanding of the molecular interactions driving the properties of real world materials and complex systems (e.g., those found in biology, chemistry, and materials science). As a result, discovering an explicit, systematic connection between microscopic nature and emergent mesoscopic behavior is a fundamental goal for this type of investigation. The molecular forces critical to driving the behavior of complex heterogeneous systems are often unclear. More problematically, simulations of representative model systems are often prohibitively expensive from both spatial and temporal perspectives, impeding straightforward investigations over possible hypotheses characterizing molecular behavior. While the reduction in resolution of a study, such as moving from an atomistic simulation to that of the resolution of large coarse-grained (CG) groups of atoms, can partially ameliorate the cost of individual simulations, the relationship between the proposed microscopic details and this intermediate resolution is nontrivial and presents new obstacles to study. Small portions of these complex systems can be realistically simulated. Alone, these smaller simulations likely do not provide insight into collectively emergent behavior. However, by proposing that the driving forces in both smaller and larger systems (containing many related copies of the smaller system) have an explicit connection, systematic bottom-up CG techniques can be used to transfer CG hypotheses discovered using a smaller scale system to a larger system of primary interest. The proposed connection between different CG systems is prescribed by (i) the CG representation (mapping) and (ii) the functional form and parameters used to represent the CG energetics, which approximate potentials of mean force (PMFs). As a result, the design of CG methods that facilitate a variety of physically relevant representations, approximations, and force fields is critical to moving the frontier of systematic CG forward. Crucially, the proposed connection between the system used for parametrization and the system of interest is orthogonal to the optimization used to approximate the potential of mean force present in all systematic CG methods. The empirical efficacy of machine learning techniques on a variety of tasks provides strong motivation to consider these approaches for approximating the PMF and analyzing these approximations.

Densest ternary sphere packings

We present our exhaustive exploration of the densest ternary sphere packings (DTSPs) for 45 radius ratios and 237 kinds of compositions, which is a packing problem of three kinds of hard spheres with different radii, under periodic boundary conditions by a random structure searching method. To efficiently explore DTSPs we further develop the searching method based on the piling-up and iterative balance methods [Koshoji et al., Phys. Rev. E 103, 023307 (2021)2470-004510.1103/PhysRevE.103.023307]. The unbiased exploration identifies diverse 38 putative DTSPs appearing on phase diagrams in which 37 DTSPs of them are discovered in the study. The structural trend of DTSPs changes depending especially on the radius of small spheres. In case that the radius of small spheres is relatively small, structures of many DTSPs can be understood as derivatives of densest binary sphere packings (DBSPs), while characteristic structures specific to the ternary system emerge as the radius of small spheres becomes larger. In addition to DTSPs, we reveal a lot of semi-DTSPs (SDTSPs) which are obtained by excluding DBSPs in the calculation of phase diagram, and investigate the correspondence of DTSPs and SDTSPs with real crystals based on the space group, showing a considerable correspondence of SDTSPs having high symmetries with real crystals including Cu_{2}GaSr and ThCr_{2}Si_{2} structures. Our study suggests that the diverse structures of DBSPs, DTSPs, and SDTSPs can be effectively used as structural prototypes for searching complex crystal structures.

A structural study and its relation to dynamic heterogeneity in a polymer glass former

The relationship between structure and dynamical behavior (super-Arrhenius temperature dependence of relaxation time accompanied by heterogeneous dynamics) in glassy materials remains an open issue in the physics of condensed matter. The question of whether this dynamic phenomena have a thermodynamic origin or not still remains unanswered. In this work we analyze several dynamic and structural parameters in a polymer glass-former by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The results obtained in this work indicate that the structure does affect dynamic behavior, whereas structural conditioning becomes noticeable below the temperature at which the non-Arrhenius behavior manifests and increases as the system approaches the glass transition temperature. Moreover, we observed that the short-range order parameters are related to local dynamics at the single-particle level. These results reinforce the idea of a connection between the structure and dynamics and that could indicate the thermodynamic nature of glass transition.

Diverse densest binary sphere packings and phase diagram

We revisit the densest binary sphere packings (DBSPs) under periodic boundary conditions and present an updated phase diagram, including newly found 12 putative densest structures over the x-α plane, where x is the relative concentration and α is the radius ratio of the small and large spheres. To efficiently explore the DBSPs, we develop an unbiased random search approach based on both the piling-up method to generate initial structures in an unbiased way and the iterative balance method to optimize the volume of a unit cell while keeping the overlap of hard spheres minimized. With those two methods, we have discovered 12 putative DBSPs and thereby the phase diagram is updated, while our results are consistent with those of a previous study [Hopkins et al., Phys. Rev. E 85, 021130 (2012)]PLEEE81539-375510.1103/PhysRevE.85.021130 with a small correction for the case of 12 or fewer spheres in the unit cell. Five of the discovered 12 DBSPs are identified in the small radius range of 0.42≤α≤0.50, where several structures are competitive to each other with respect to packing fraction. Through the exhaustive search, diverse dense packings are discovered and, accordingly, we find that packing structures achieve high packing fractions by introducing distortion and/or combining a few local dense structural units. Furthermore, we investigate the correspondence of the DBSPs with crystals based on the space group. The result shows that many structural units in real crystals, e.g., LaH_{10} and SrGe_{2-δ} being high-pressure phases, can be understood as DBSPs. The correspondence implies that the densest sphere packings can be used effectively as structural prototypes for searching complex crystal structures, especially for high-pressure phases.

Systems with Size and Energy Polydispersity: From Glasses to Mosaic Crystals

We use Langevin dynamics simulations to study dense 2d systems of particles with both size and energy polydispersity. We compare two types of bidisperse systems which differ in the correlation between particle size and interaction parameters: in one system big particles have high interaction parameters and small particles have low interaction parameters, while in the other system the situation is reversed. We study the different phases of the two systems and compare them to those of a system with size but not energy bidispersity. We show that, depending on the strength of interaction between big and small particles, cooling to low temperatures yields either homogeneous glasses or mosaic crystals. We find that systems with low mixing interaction, undergo partial freezing of one of the components at intermediate temperatures, and that while this phenomenon is energy-driven in both size and energy bidisperse systems, it is controlled by entropic effects in systems with size bidispersity only.

Structural Ordering in Liquid Gallium under Extreme Conditions

The atomic-scale structure, melting curve, and equation of state of liquid gallium has been measured to high pressure (p) and high temperature (T) up to 26 GPa and 900 K by in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations up to 33.4 GPa and 1000 K are in excellent agreement with the experimental measurements, providing detailed insight at the level of pair distribution functions. The results reveal an absence of dimeric bonding in the liquid state and a continuous increase in average coordination number n[over ¯]_{Ga}^{Ga} from 10.4(2) at 0.1 GPa approaching ∼12 by 25 GPa. Topological cluster analysis of the simulation trajectories finds increasing fractions of fivefold symmetric and crystalline motifs at high p-T. Although the liquid progressively resembles a hard-sphere structure towards the melting curve, the deviation from this simple description remains large (≥40%) across all p-T space, with specific motifs of different geometries strongly correlating with low local two-body excess entropy at high p-T.

Packing Polydisperse Colloids into Crystals: When Charge-Dispersity Matters

Monte Carlo simulations, fully constrained by experimental parameters, are found to agree well with a measured phase diagram of aqueous dispersions of nanoparticles with a moderate size polydispersity over a broad range of salt concentrations, c_{s}, and volume fractions, ϕ. Upon increasing ϕ, the colloids freeze first into coexisting compact solids then into a body centered cubic phase (bcc) before they melt into a glass forming liquid. The surprising stability of the bcc solid at high ϕ and c_{s} is explained by the interaction (charge) polydispersity and vibrational entropy.

Structural order as a genuine control parameter of dynamics in simple glass formers

Glass transition is characterised by drastic dynamical slowing down upon cooling, accompanied by growing spatial heterogeneity. Its rationalisation by subtle changes in the liquid structure has been long debated but remains elusive, due to intrinsic difficulty in detecting the underlying complex structural ordering. Here we report that structural order parameter characterising local packing capability can well describe the glassy dynamics not only macroscopically but also microscopically, no matter whether it is driven by temperature or density. A Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann (VFT)-like relation is universally identified between the structural relaxation time and the order parameter for supercooled liquids with isotropic interactions. More importantly, we find such an intriguing VFT-like relation to be statistically valid even at a particle level, between spatially coarse-grained structural order and microscopic particle-level dynamics. Such a unified description of glassy dynamics based solely on structural order is expected to contribute to the ultimate understanding of the long-standing glass-transition problem.

The glass-forming materials exhibit dynamical slowing down together with spatial heterogeneity at microscales, but their origin remains debated. Tong and Tanaka show that this phenomenon can be unified based on a structural order parameter capable of detecting subtle ordering in instantaneous liquid states.

Direct determination of structural heterogeneity in metallic glasses using four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy

We report the first direct quantification of the structural heterogeneity in metallic glasses using intensity variance and angular correlation analyses of the 4-dimensional (4-D) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) data. We demonstrate that the real-space reconstruction and analyses of the 4-D nanodiffraction data acquired using a pixelated fast STEM detector enables quantitative determination of the details of local structural heterogeneity, including the type, size, volume fraction and spatial distribution of local ordering at the nano- to meso-scale, beyond the limits of the previous measurements using conventional detectors. We show that different types of local ordering are present in Zr₅₅Co₂₅Al₂₀ glass, leading to a high degree of structural heterogeneity, with the total volume of locally ordered regions making up to ∼14% of the entire volume. These findings are significant, as the structure-property relationship in metallic glasses and other amorphous materials has been difficult to establish because of the lack of detailed structural information from experiments.

The race to the bottom: approaching the ideal glass?

Key to resolving the scientific challenge of the glass transition is to understand the origin of the massive increase in viscosity of liquids cooled below their melting temperature (avoiding crystallisation). A number of competing and often mutually exclusive theoretical approaches have been advanced to describe this phenomenon. Some posit a bona fide thermodynamic phase to an 'ideal glass', an amorphous state with exceptionally low entropy. Other approaches are built around the concept of the glass transition as a primarily dynamic phenomenon. These fundamentally different interpretations give equally good descriptions of the data available, so it is hard to determine which-if any-is correct. Recently however this situation has begun to change. A consensus has emerged that one powerful means to resolve this longstanding question is to approach the putative thermodynamic transition sufficiently closely, and a number of techniques have emerged to meet this challenge. Here we review the results of some of these new techniques and discuss the implications for the existence-or otherwise-of the thermodynamic transition to an ideal glass.

Local structure in deeply supercooled liquids exhibits growing lengthscales and dynamical correlations

Glasses are among the most widely used of everyday materials, yet the process by which a liquid's viscosity increases by 14 decades to become a glass remains unclear, as often contradictory theories provide equally good descriptions of the available data. Knowledge of emergent lengthscales and higher-order structure could help resolve this, but this requires time-resolved measurements of dense particle coordinates-previously only obtained over a limited time interval. Here we present an experimental study of a model colloidal system over a dynamic window significantly larger than previous measurements, revealing structural ordering more strongly linked to dynamics than previously found. Furthermore we find that immobile regions and domains of local structure grow concurrently with density, and that these regions have low configurational entropy. We thus show that local structure plays an important role at deep supercooling, consistent with a thermodynamic interpretation of the glass transition rather than a principally dynamic description.

Extending the range and physical accuracy of coarse-grained models: Order parameter dependent interactions

Order parameters (i.e., collective variables) are often used to describe the behavior of systems as they capture different features of the free energy surface. Yet, most coarse-grained (CG) models only employ two- or three-body non-bonded interactions between the CG particles. In situations where these interactions are insufficient for the CG model to reproduce the structural distributions of the underlying fine-grained (FG) model, additional interactions must be included. In this paper, we introduce an approach to expand the basis sets available in the multiscale coarse-graining (MS-CG) methodology by including order parameters. Then, we investigate the ability of an additive local order parameter (e.g., density) and an additive global order parameter (i.e., distance from a hard wall) to improve the description of CG models in interfacial systems. Specifically, we study methanol liquid-vapor coexistence, acetonitrile liquid-vapor coexistence, and acetonitrile liquid confined by hard-wall plates, all using single site CG models. We find that the use of order parameters dramatically improves the reproduction of structural properties of interfacial CG systems relative to the FG reference as compared with pairwise CG interactions alone.

Nucleation in Sheared Granular Matter

We present an experiment on crystallization of packings of macroscopic granular spheres. This system is often considered to be a model for thermally driven atomic or colloidal systems. Cyclically shearing a packing of frictional spheres, we observe a first order phase transition from a disordered to an ordered state. The ordered state consists of crystallites of mixed fcc and hcp symmetry that coexist with the amorphous bulk. The transition, initiated by homogeneous nucleation, overcomes a barrier at 64.5% volume fraction. Nucleation consists predominantly of the dissolving of small nuclei and the growth of nuclei that have reached a critical size of about ten spheres.

Structural predictor for nonlinear sheared dynamics in simple glass-forming liquids

Glass-forming liquids subjected to sufficiently strong shear universally exhibit striking nonlinear behavior; for example, a power-law decrease of the viscosity with increasing shear rate. This phenomenon has attracted considerable attention over the years from both fundamental and applicational viewpoints. However, the out-of-equilibrium and nonlinear nature of sheared fluids have made theoretical understanding of this phenomenon very challenging and thus slower to progress. We find here that the structural relaxation time as a function of the two-body excess entropy, calculated for the extensional axis of the shear flow, collapses onto the corresponding equilibrium curve for a wide range of pair potentials ranging from harsh repulsive to soft and finite. This two-body excess entropy collapse provides a powerful approach to predicting the dynamics of nonequilibrium liquids from their equilibrium counterparts. Furthermore, the two-body excess entropy scaling suggests that sheared dynamics is controlled purely by the liquid structure captured in the form of the two-body excess entropy along the extensional direction, shedding light on the perplexing mechanism behind shear thinning.

Suppression of crystalline fluctuations by competing structures in a supercooled liquid

We propose a geometrical characterization of amorphous liquid structures that suppress crystallization by competing locally with crystalline order. We introduce for this purpose the crystal affinity of a liquid, a simple measure of its propensity to accumulate local crystalline structures on cooling. This quantity is explicitly related to the high-temperature structural covariance between local fluctuations in crystal order and that of competing liquid structures: favoring a structure that, due to poor overlap properties, anticorrelates with crystalline order reduces the affinity of the liquid. Using a lattice model of a liquid, we show that this quantity successfully predicts the tendency of a liquid to either accumulate or suppress local crystalline fluctuations with increasing supercooling. We demonstrate that the crystal affinity correlates strongly with the crystal nucleation rate and the crystal-liquid interfacial free energy of the low-temperature liquid, making our theory a predictive tool to determine which amorphous structures enhance glass-forming ability.

Effect of Energy Polydispersity on the Nature of Lennard-Jones Liquids

In the companion paper [ Ingebrigtsen , T. S. ; Tanaka , H. J. Phys. Chem. B 2015 , 119 , 11052 ] the effect of size polydispersity on the nature of Lennard-Jones (LJ) liquids, which represent most molecular liquids without hydrogen bonds, was studied. More specifically, it was shown that even highly size polydisperse LJ liquids are Roskilde-simple (RS) liquids. RS liquids are liquids with strong correlation between constant volume equilibrium fluctuations of virial and potential energy and are simpler than other types of liquids. Moreover, it was shown that size polydisperse LJ liquids have isomorphs to a good approximation. Isomorphs are curves in the phase diagram of RS liquids along which structure, dynamics, and some thermodynamic quantities are invariant in dimensionless (reduced) units. In this paper, we study the effect of energy polydispersity on the nature of LJ liquids. We show that energy polydisperse LJ liquids are RS liquids. However, a tendency of particle segregation, which increases with the degree of polydispersity, leads to a loss of strong virial-potential energy correlation but is mitigated by increasing temperature and/or density. Isomorphs are a good approximation also for energy polydisperse LJ liquids, although particle-resolved quantities display a somewhat poorer scaling compared to the mean quantities along the isomorph.

Structures of Local Rearrangements in Soft Colloidal Glasses

We image local structural rearrangements in soft colloidal glasses under small periodic perturbations induced by thermal cycling. Local structural entropy S_{2} positively correlates with observed rearrangements in colloidal glasses. The high S_{2} values of the rearranging clusters in glasses indicate that fragile regions in glasses are structurally less correlated, similar to structural defects in crystalline solids. Slow-evolving high S_{2} spots are capable of predicting local rearrangements long before the relaxations occur, while fluctuation-created high S_{2} spots best correlate with local deformations right before the rearrangement events. Local free volumes are also found to correlate with particle rearrangements at extreme values, although the ability to identify relaxation sites is substantially lower than S_{2}. Our experiments provide an efficient structural identifier for the fragile regions in glasses and highlight the important role of structural correlations in the physics of glasses.

Local structure controls the nonaffine shear and bulk moduli of disordered solids

Paradigmatic model systems, which are used to study the mechanical response of matter, are random networks of point-atoms, random sphere packings, or simple crystal lattices; all of these models assume central-force interactions between particles/atoms. Each of these models differs in the spatial arrangement and the correlations among particles. In turn, this is reflected in the widely different behaviours of the shear (G) and compression (K) elastic moduli. The relation between the macroscopic elasticity as encoded in G, K and their ratio, and the microscopic lattice structure/order, is not understood. We provide a quantitative analytical connection between the local orientational order and the elasticity in model amorphous solids with different internal microstructure, focusing on the two opposite limits of packings (strong excluded-volume) and networks (no excluded-volume). The theory predicts that, in packings, the local orientational order due to excluded-volume causes less nonaffinity (less softness or larger stiffness) under compression than under shear. This leads to lower values of G/K, a well-documented phenomenon which was lacking a microscopic explanation. The theory also provides an excellent one-parameter description of the elasticity of compressed emulsions in comparison with experimental data over a broad range of packing fractions.

Assessing the role of static length scales behind glassy dynamics in polydisperse hard disks

The possible role of growing static order in the dynamical slowing down toward the glass transition has recently attracted considerable attention. On the basis of random first-order transition theory, a new method to measure the static correlation length of amorphous order, called "point-to-set" (PTS) length, has been proposed and used to show that the dynamic length grows much faster than the static length. Here, we study the nature of the PTS length, using a polydisperse hard-disk system, which is a model that is known to exhibit a growing hexatic order upon densification. We show that the PTS correlation length is decoupled from the steeper increase of the correlation length of hexatic order and dynamic heterogeneity, while closely mirroring the decay length of two-body density correlations. Our results thus provide a clear example that other forms of order can play an important role in the slowing down of the dynamics, casting a serious doubt on the order-agnostic nature of the PTS length and its relevance to slow dynamics, provided that a polydisperse hard-disk system is a typical glass former.

Influence of patch-size variability on the crystallization of tetrahedral patchy particles

The understanding of disorder effects on crystallization is of fundamental and technological importance. It is well established by both theory and experiment that particle-size polydispersity hinders crystallization for isotropically interacting particles. Here, we address the effects of patch variability in a model for tetrahedral colloids, where polydispersity is introduced independently on the size, position, and strength of the attractive patches. Our simulations indicate that, unlike particle-size polydispersity, angular polydispersity has a minor impact on the crystallization properties of tetrahedral colloidal particles. Particles with angular polydispersity well within current experimental possibilities fully retain their crystallization properties, a result which should encourage the realization of colloidal crystals in experiment.

Structural evolution in the aging process of supercooled colloidal liquids

When a liquid is rapidly quenched to a temperature below the glass-transition point, it is driven out of equilibrium; it then slowly relaxes to a (quasi)equilibrium state. This slow relaxation process is called aging. By definition, any glasses are inevitably in the process of aging and actually slowly evolving with time. Thus the study of aging phenomena is of fundamental importance for understanding not only the nonequilibrium nature of the glass transition, but also the stability of glassy materials. Here we consider aging after a rather shallow quench, for which a system is still able to reach (metastable) equilibrium. By using polydisperse colloidal liquids as a model, we show the validity of dynamical scaling that there is only one relevant length scale not only for a quasiequilibrium supercooled state but also for a nonequilibrium process of aging, which is reminiscent of dynamical critical phenomena. Our finding indicates that the aging toward (metastable) equilibrium may be regarded as the growth process of critical-like fluctuations of static order associated with low-free-energy configurations, further suggesting that this ordering is the origin of cooperative slow dynamics in the systems studied. The generality of this statement for other glass-forming systems remains for a future study.

Structural signatures of dynamic heterogeneities in monolayers of colloidal ellipsoids

When a liquid is supercooled towards the glass transition, its dynamics drastically slows down, whereas its static structure remains relatively unchanged. Finding a structural signature of the dynamic slowing down is a major challenge, yet it is often too subtle to be uncovered. Here we discover the structural signatures for both translational and rotational dynamics in monolayers of colloidal ellipsoids by video microscopy experiments and computer simulations. The correlation lengths of the dynamic slowest-moving clusters, the static glassy clusters, the static local structural entropy and the dynamic heterogeneity follow the same power-law divergence, suggesting that the kinetic slowing down is caused by a decrease in the structural entropy and an increase in the size of the glassy cluster. Ellipsoids with different aspect ratios exhibit single- or double-step glass transitions with distinct dynamic heterogeneities. These findings demonstrate that the particle shape anisotropy has important effects on the structure and dynamics of the glass.

To establish a structural signature of slow dynamics as a system approaches the glass transition is challenging. Here, the authors identify, by performing video microscopy experiments and simulations, two structural signatures for the rotational and translational dynamics in monolayers of colloidal ellipsoids.

The crystallization process of liquid vanadium studied by ab initio molecular dynamics

We present a study of the crystallization process in liquid vanadium over a temperature range from 3000 K down to 1500 K using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Short-range order evolution during solidification is studied using various structural analysis methods. We show that the icosahedral-like short-range order is detected in the stable liquid phase and grows upon supercooling. The system undergoes a first-order phase transition (from a liquid to a solid state) at a temperature of about 1600 K. The crystal nucleation process is further studied using the time-temperature transformation mechanism by annealing the system at 1650 K. The nucleation is examined using bond-orientational order and density fluctuation analysis. Our finding is that various precursors appear in the region of high bond-orientational order with the majority having body-centered cubic (bcc)-like symmetry. This bcc-like region grows on annealing via thermal fluctuations. Our results reveal that the bond-orientational order precedes the density fluctuation, and is the main driving factor for nucleation.
