Abstract
Accurate band gap prediction in semiconductors is crucial for materials science and semiconductor technology advancements. This paper extends the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional for a wide range of semiconductors, tackling the exchange and correlation enhancement factor complexities within density functional theory (DFT). Our customized functionals offer a clearer and more realistic alternative to DFT+U methods, which demand large negative U values for elements like sulfur (S), selenium (Se), and phosphorus (P). Moreover, these functionals are more cost-effective than GW or Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) hybrid functional methods, therefore, significantly facilitating the way for unified workflows in analyzing electronic structure, dielectric constants, effective masses, and further transport and elastic properties, allowing for seamless calculations across various properties. We point out that such development could be helpful in the creation of comprehensive databases of band gap and dielectric properties of the materials without expensive calculations. Furthermore, for the semiconductors studied, we show that these customized functionals and the strongly constrained and appropriately normed semilocal density functional (SCAN) perform similarly in terms of the band gap.

Abstract
The random phase approximation of time-dependent auxiliary density functional theory (TDADFT) is rederived from auxiliary density perturbation theory. Our exhaustive validation of TDADFT reveals an upshift of the excitation energies by ∼0.1 eV with respect to standard time-dependent density functional theory. For the computationally efficient implementation of TDADFT, floating point operation optimized three-center electron repulsion integral recurrence relations and their double asymptotic expansions are implemented into the Davidson solver. The computational efficiency of TDADFT is benchmarked with four sets of molecules comprising alkanes, fullerenes, DNA fragments, and zeolites. The results show that TDADFT has a computational scaling between 1.3 and 1.9 with respect to the number of basis functions, which is lower than the scaling of standard time-dependent density functional theory. Due to its computational simplifications, TDADFT is particularly well suited for Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations. As illustrative examples, we present the temperature effects on the gas-phase absorption spectra of benzene, naphthalene, and anthracene.

Abstract
Five effects of correction of the asymptotic potential error in density functionals are identified that significantly improve calculated properties of molecular excited states involving charge-transfer character. Newly developed materials-science computational methods are used to demonstrate how these effects manifest in materials spectroscopy. Connection is made considering chlorophyll-a as a paradigm for molecular spectroscopy, 22 iconic materials as paradigms for 3D materials spectroscopy, and the VN - defect in hexagonal boron nitride as an example of the spectroscopy of defects in 2D materials pertaining to nanophotonics. Defects can equally be thought of as being "molecular" and "materials" in nature and hence bridge the relms of molecular and materials spectroscopies. It is concluded that the density functional HSE06, currently considered as the standard for accurate calculations of materials spectroscopy, should be replaced, in most instances, by the computationally similar but asymptotically corrected CAM-B3LYP functional, with some specific functionals for materials-use only providing further improvements.

Abstract
Analytical calculation of alchemical derivatives based on auxiliary density perturbation theory is described, coded, and validated. For the case where the nucleus is a hydrogen atom and the nuclear charge is changed from 1 to 0, it turns out that a good estimate of the proton binding energies can be obtained very efficiently. First-order results correspond exactly to the molecular electrostatic potential evaluated at the hydrogen nucleus location (removing self-repulsion), in agreement with previously reported extensive studies. Therefore, the second-order results reported here are refinements in accuracy that finally allow a quantitative exploration of differential acidity. Furthermore, the recently reported h function is produced in its analytical form as a byproduct and local descriptor associated with the proton binding energy values found with this approach. In an example application, proton binding energies are computed for a family of imidazolium derivatives to demonstrate the capabilities and the stability of the method with respect to changes in basis set or exchange-correlation functional.

Abstract
The working equations for the extension of auxiliary density perturbation theory (ADPT) to hybrid functionals, employing the variational fitting of the Fock potential, are derived. The response equations in the resulting self-consistent ADPT (SC-ADPT) are solved iteratively with an adapted Eirola-Nevanlinna algorithm. As a result, a memory and CPU time efficient implementation of perturbation theory free of four-center electron repulsion integrals (ERIs) is obtained. Our validation calculations of SC-ADPT static and dynamic polarizabilities show quantitative agreement with corresponding coupled perturbed Hartree-Fock and Kohn-Sham results employing four-center ERIs. The comparison of SC-ADPT hybrid functional polarizabilities with coupled cluster reference calculations yield semiquantitative agreement. The presented systematic study of the dynamic polarizabilities of oligothiophenes shows that hybrid functionals can overcome the pathological misplacement of excitation poles by the local density and generalized gradient approximations. Good agreement with experimental dynamic polarizabilities for all studied oligothiophenes is achieved with range-separated hybrid functionals in the framework of SC-ADPT.

Abstract
A new density functional for the total kinetic energy in the generalized gradient approximation is developed through an enhancement factor that leads to the correct behavior in the limits when the reduced density gradient tends to 0 and to infinity and by making use of the conjoint conjecture for the interpolation between these two limits, through the incorporation, in the intermediate region of constraints that are associated with the exchange energy functional. The resulting functional leads to a reasonable description of the kinetic energies of atoms and molecules when it is used in combination with Hartree-Fock densities. Additionally, in order to improve the behavior of the kinetic energy density, a new enhancement factor for the Pauli kinetic energy is proposed by incorporating the correct behavior into the limits when the reduced density gradient tends to 0 and to infinity, together with the positivity condition, and imposing through the interpolation function that the sum of its integral over the whole space and the Weiszacker energy must be equal to the value obtained with the enhancement factor developed for the total kinetic energy.

Abstract
Electronic structure calculations, such as in the Hartree-Fock or Kohn-Sham density functional approach, require an initial guess for the molecular orbitals. The quality of the initial guess has a significant impact on the speed of convergence of the self-consistent field (SCF) procedure. Popular choices for the initial guess include the one-electron guess from the core Hamiltonian, the extended Hückel method, and the superposition of atomic densities (SAD). Here, we discuss alternative guesses obtained from the superposition of atomic potentials (SAP), which is easily implementable even in real-space calculations. We also discuss a variant of SAD which produces guess orbitals by purification of the density matrix that could also be used in real-space calculations, as well as a parameter-free variant of the extended Hückel method, which resembles the SAP method and is easy to implement on top of existing SAD infrastructure. The performance of the core Hamiltonian, the SAD, and the SAP guesses as well as the extended Hückel variant is assessed in nonrelativistic calculations on a data set of 259 molecules ranging from the first to the fourth periods by projecting the guess orbitals onto precomputed, converged SCF solutions in single- to triple-ζ basis sets. It is shown that the proposed SAP guess is the best guess on average. The extended Hückel guess offers a good alternative, with less scatter in accuracy.

Abstract
We develop and validate a nonempirical generalized gradient approximation (GGA) exchange (X) density functional that performs as well as the SCAN (strongly constrained and appropriately normed) meta-GGA on standard thermochemistry tests. Additionally, the new functional (NCAP, nearly correct asymptotic potential) yields Kohn-Sham eigenvalues that are useful approximations of the density functional theory (DFT) ionization potential theorem values by inclusion of a systematic derivative discontinuity shift of the X potential. NCAP also enables time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations of good-quality polarizabilities, hyper-polarizabilities, and one-Fermion excited states without modification (calculated or ad hoc) of the long-range behavior of the exchange potential or other patches. NCAP is constructed by reconsidering the imposition of the asymptotic correctness of the X potential (-1/ r) as a constraint. Inclusion of derivative discontinuity and approximate integer self-interaction correction treatments along with first-principles determination of the effective second-order gradient expansion coefficient yields a major advance over our earlier correct asymptotic potential functional [CAP; J. Chem. Phys. 2015 , 142 , 054105 ]. The new functional reduces a spurious bump in the CAP atomic exchange potential and moves it to distances irrelevantly far from the nucleus (outside the tail of essentially all practical basis functions). It therefore has nearly correct atomic exchange-potential behavior out to rather large finite distances r from the nucleus but eventually goes as - c/ r with an estimated value for the constant c of around 0.3, so as to achieve other important properties of exact DFT exchange within the restrictions of the GGA form. We illustrate the results with the Ne atom optimized effective potentials and with standard molecular benchmark test data sets for thermochemical, structural, and response properties.

Abstract
We report original analyses of attosecond electron dynamics of molecules subject to collisions by high energy charged particles based on Real-Time Time-Dependent-Density-Functional-Theory simulations coupled to Topological Analyses of the Electron Localization Function (TA-TD-ELF). We investigate irradiation of water and guanine. TA-TD-ELF enables qualitative and quantitative characterizations of bond breaking and formation, of charge migration within topological basins, or of electron attachment to the colliding particle. Whereas the Lewis-VSEPR structure of gas phase water is blown out within a few attoseconds after collision, that of guanine is far more robust and reconstitutes rapidly after impact even though the molecule remains electronically excited. This difference is accounted by the presence of the electron bath surrounding the impact point which enables energy relaxation within the molecule. Our approach should stimulate future studies to unravel the early steps following irradiation of various types of systems (isolated molecules, biomolecules, nanoclusters, solids, etc.) and is also readily applicable to irradiation by photons of various energies.
