Compressed exponential decays in correlation experiments: The influence of temperature gradients and convection

Delicate Analysis of Interacting Proteins and Their Assemblies by Flow Field-Flow Fractionation Techniques

We study the efficiency of several asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) techniques to investigate self-associating wheat gluten proteins. We compare the use of a denaturing buffer including sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and a mild chaotropic solvent, water/ethanol, as the eluent, on a model gluten sample. Through a thorough analysis of the data obtained from coupled light scattering detectors and with the identification of molecular composition of the eluted protein, we evidence coelution events in several conditions. We show that the focus step used in conventional AF4 with the SDS buffer leads to the formation of aggregates that coelute with monomeric proteins. By contrast, a frit-inlet device enables the fractionation of individual wheat proteins in the SDS buffer. Interestingly conventional AF4, using water/ethanol as eluent, is an effective method for fractionating gluten proteins and their complex dynamic assemblies, which involve weak forces and are composed of both monomeric and polymeric proteins.

Global population: from Super-Malthus behavior to Doomsday criticality

The report discusses global population changes from the Holocene beginning to 2023, via two Super Malthus (SM) scaling equations. SM-1 is the empowered exponential dependence: P t = P 0 e x p ± t / τ β , and SM-2 is the Malthus-type relation with the time-dependent growth rate r ( t ) or relaxation time τ ( t ) = 1 / r ( t ) : P t = P 0 e x p r t × t = P 0 e x p τ t / t . Population data from a few sources were numerically filtered to obtain a 'smooth' dataset, allowing the distortions-sensitive and derivative-based analysis. The test recalling SM-1 equation revealed the essential transition near the year 1970 (population: ~ 3 billion): from the compressed exponential behavior ( β > 1 ) to the stretched exponential one ( β < 1 ). For SM-2 dependence, linear changes of τ T during the Industrial Revolutions period, since ~ 1700, led to the constrained critical behavior P t = P 0 e x p b ' t / T C - t , whereT C ≈ 2216 is the extrapolated year of the infinite population. The link to the 'hyperbolic' von Foerster Doomsday equation is shown. Results are discussed in the context of complex systems physics, the Weibull distribution in extreme value theory, and significant historic and prehistoric issues revealed by the distortions-sensitive analysis.

Microgravity Removes Reaction Limits from Nonpolar Nanoparticle Agglomeration

Gravity can affect the agglomeration of nanoparticles by changing convection and sedimentation. The temperature-induced agglomeration of hexadecanethiol-capped gold nanoparticles in microgravity (µ g) is studied at the ZARM (Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity) drop tower and compared to their agglomeration on the ground (1 g). Nonpolar nanoparticles with a hydrodynamic diameter of 13 nm are dispersed in tetradecane, rapidly cooled from 70 to 10 °C to induce agglomeration, and observed by dynamic light scattering at a time resolution of 1 s. The mean hydrodynamic diameters of the agglomerates formed after 8 s in microgravity are 3 times (for low initial concentrations) to 5 times (at high initial concentrations) larger than on the ground. The observations are consistent with an agglomeration process that is closer to the reaction limit on thground and closer to the diffusion limit in microgravity.

Glassy dynamics in polyalcohols: intermolecular simplicity vs. intramolecular complexity

Using depolarized light scattering, we have recently shown that structural relaxation in a broad range of supercooled liquids follows, to good approximation, a generic line shape with high-frequency power law ω^-1/2. We now continue this study by investigating a systematic series of polyalcohols (PAs), frequently used as model-systems in glass-science, i.a., because the width of their respective dielectric loss spectra varies strongly along the series. Our results reveal that the microscopic origin of the observed relaxation behavior varies significantly between different PAs: while short-chained PAs like glycerol rotate as more or less rigid entities and their light scattering spectra follow the generic shape, long-chained PAs like sorbitol display pronounced intramolecular dynamic contributions on the time scale of structural relaxation, leading to systematic deviations from the generic shape. Based on these findings we discuss an important limitation for observing the generic shape in a supercooled liquid: the dynamics that is probed needs to reflect the intermolecular dynamic heterogeneity, and must not be superimposed by effects of intramolecular dynamic heterogeneity.

Flexible Sample Environments for the Investigation of Soft Matter at the European Spallation Source: Part I—The In Situ SANS/DLS Setup

As part of the development of the new European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund (Sweden), which will provide the most brilliant neutron beams worldwide, it is necessary to provide different sample environments with which the potential of the new source can be exploited as soon as possible from the start of operation. The overarching goal of the project is to reduce the downtimes of the instruments related to changing the sample environment by developing plug and play sample environments for different soft matter samples using the same general carrier platform and also providing full software integration and control by just using unified connectors. In the present article, as a part of this endeavor, the sample environment for in situ SANS and dynamic light scattering measurements is introduced.

A facile evanescent-field imaging approach for monitoring colloidal gel evolution near a surface

A facile evanescent-field imaging approach is developed to probe the aggregation behavior of near-wall colloids/clusters during colloidal gel evolution. Total internal reflection microscope (TIRM) images are directly utilized to access the structural relaxation time via density-fluctuation theory. The behaviors of cluster-cluster aggregation and physical aging of the colloidal gel networks are resolved in both time and space under fractal scaling criteria.

Use of continuous sample translation to reduce radiation damage for XPCS studies of protein diffusion

An experimental setup to measure X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy during continuous sample translation is presented and its effectiveness as a means to avoid sample damage in dynamics studies of protein diffusion is evaluated. X-ray damage from focused coherent synchrotron radiation remains below tolerable levels as long as the sample is translated through the beam sufficiently quickly. Here it is shown that it is possible to separate sample dynamics from the effects associated with the transit of the sample through the beam. By varying the sample translation rate, the damage threshold level, D_thresh = 1.8 kGy, for when beam damage begins to modify the dynamics under the conditions used, is also determined. Signal-to-noise ratios, R_sn ≥ 20, are obtained down to the shortest delay times of 20 µs. The applicability of this method of data collection to the next generation of multi-bend achromat synchrotron sources is discussed and it is shown that sub-microsecond dynamics should be obtainable on protein samples.

Intermolecular cross-correlations in the dielectric response of glycerol

We suggest a way to disentangle self- from cross-correlation contributions in the dielectric spectra of glycerol. Recently it was demonstrated for monohydroxy alcohols that a detailed comparison of the dynamic susceptibilities of photon correlation and broadband dielectric spectroscopy allows to unambiguously disentangle a collective relaxation mode known as the Debye process, which arises due to supramolecular structures, and the α-relaxation, which proves to be identical in both methods. In the present paper, we apply the same idea and analysis to the paradigmatic glass former glycerol. For that purpose we present new light scattering data from photon correlation spectroscopy measurements and combine these with literature data to obtain a data set covering a dynamic range from 10^-4-10¹³ Hz. Then we apply the above mentioned analysis by comparing this data set with a corresponding set of broadband dielectric data. Our finding is that even in a polyalcohol self- and cross-correlation contributions can approximately be disentangled in that way and that the emerging picture is very similar to that in monohydroxy alcohols. This is further supported by comparing the data with fast field cycling NMR measurements and dynamic shear relaxation data from the literature, and it turns out that, within the described approach, the α-process appears very similar in all methods, while the pronounced differences observed in the spectral density are due to a different expression of the slow collective relaxational contribution. In the dielectric spectra the strength of this peak is reasonably well estimated by the Kirkwood correlation factor, which supports the view that it arises due to dynamic cross-correlations, which were previously often assumed to be negligible in dielectric measurements.

Physical aging and compressed exponential behaviors in a model soft colloidal system

Diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS)-based micro-rheology has been used in different optical geometries (backscattering and transmission) as well as different sample thicknesses in order to probe system dynamics at different length scales [D. J. Pine, D. A. Weitz, J. X. Zhu, E. Herbolzheimer. J. Phys., 1990, 51(18), 2101-2127]. Previous study from this lab [Q. Li, X. Peng, G. B. McKenna. Soft Matter, 2017, 13(7), 1396-1404] indicates the DWS-based micro-rheology observes the system non-equilibrium behaviors differently from macro-rheology. The object of the present work was to further explore the non-equilibrium dynamics and to address the range of utility of DWS as a micro-rheological method. A thermo-sensitive core-shell colloidal system was investigated both during aging and subsequent to aging into a metastable equilibrium state using temperature-jump induced volume fraction-jump experiments. We find that in the non-equilibrium state, significant differences in the measured dynamics are observed for the different geometries and length scales. Compressed exponential relaxations for the autocorrelation function g2(t) were observed for large length scales. However, upon converting the g2(t) data to the mean square displacement (MSD), such differences with length scale diminished and the long-time MSD behavior was consistent with diffusive behavior. These observations in the non-equilibrium behaviors for different length scales leads to questioning of some interpretations in the current field of light scattering-based micro-rheology and provides a possibility to interrogate the aging mechanisms in colloidal glasses from a broader perspective than normally considered in measurements of g2(t) using DWS-based micro-rheology.

Globulelike Conformation and Enhanced Diffusion of Active Polymers

We study the dynamics and conformation of polymers composed by active monomers. By means of Brownian dynamics simulations we show that, when the direction of the self-propulsion of each monomer is aligned with the backbone, the polymer undergoes a coil-to-globulelike transition, highlighted by a marked change of the scaling exponent of the gyration radius. Concurrently, the diffusion coefficient of the center of mass of the polymer becomes essentially independent of the polymer size for sufficiently long polymers or large magnitudes of the self-propulsion. These effects are reduced when the self-propulsion of the monomers is not bound to be tangent to the backbone of the polymer. Our results, rationalized by a minimal stochastic model, open new routes for activity-controlled polymers and, possibly, for a new generation of polymer-based drug carriers.

Three-Dimensional Enantiomeric Recognition of Optically Trapped Single Chiral Nanoparticles

We optically trap freestanding single metallic chiral nanoparticles using a standing-wave optical tweezer. We also incorporate within the trap a polarimetric setup that allows us to perform in situ chiral recognition of single enantiomers. This is done by measuring the S_{3} component of the Stokes vector of a light beam scattered off the trapped nanoparticle in the forward direction. This unique combination of optical trapping and chiral recognition, all implemented within a single setup, opens new perspectives towards the control, recognition, and manipulation of chiral objects at nanometer scales.

Debye Process and β-Relaxation in 1-Propanol Probed by Dielectric Spectroscopy and Depolarized Dynamic Light Scattering

We revisit the reorientational dynamics of 1-propanol as a prototype of a monohydroxy alcohol and H-bonding system by dielectric spectroscopy (DS) and depolarized dynamic light scattering (DDLS). In particular, we address the question of whether the Debye relaxation, which is seen as a dominant process in DS, is visible in light scattering and discuss how the Johari-Goldstein (JG) β-process, which is also a prominent feature of the dielectric spectrum, appears in photon correlation spectroscopy. For that purpose we performed depolarized photon correlation experiments with an improved setup and performed additional time domain dielectric experiments which gives us the possibility to compare dielectric and light scattering data in a broad temperature range. It turns out that the improved setup allows to unambiguously identify the JG β-process, which shows almost identical properties in DDLS as in the dielectric spectra, but a Debye relaxation is not present in the DDLS data and can be excluded down to a level of 2.5% of the α-process amplitude.

Diffusive dynamics during the high-to-low density transition in amorphous ice

Water exists in high- and low-density amorphous ice forms (HDA and LDA), which could correspond to the glassy states of high- (HDL) and low-density liquid (LDL) in the metastable part of the phase diagram. However, the nature of both the glass transition and the high-to-low-density transition are debated and new experimental evidence is needed. Here we combine wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) with X-ray photon-correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) in the small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) geometry to probe both the structural and dynamical properties during the high-to-low-density transition in amorphous ice at 1 bar. By analyzing the structure factor and the radial distribution function, the coexistence of two structurally distinct domains is observed at T = 125 K. XPCS probes the dynamics in momentum space, which in the SAXS geometry reflects structural relaxation on the nanometer length scale. The dynamics of HDA are characterized by a slow component with a large time constant, arising from viscoelastic relaxation and stress release from nanometer-sized heterogeneities. Above 110 K a faster, strongly temperature-dependent component appears, with momentum transfer dependence pointing toward nanoscale diffusion. This dynamical component slows down after transition into the low-density form at 130 K, but remains diffusive. The diffusive character of both the high- and low-density forms is discussed among different interpretations and the results are most consistent with the hypothesis of a liquid-liquid transition in the ultraviscous regime.
