Mechanisms of resonant low frequency Raman scattering from metallic nanoparticle Lamb modes

Sensitivity of Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance and Acoustic Vibrations to Edge Rounding in Silver Nanocubes

Precise knowledge of the dependence of nano-object properties on their structural characteristics such as their size, shape, composition, or crystallinity, in turn, enables them to be finely characterized using appropriate techniques. Spectrophotometry and inelastic light scattering spectroscopy are noninvasive techniques that are proving highly robust and efficient for characterizing the optical response and vibrational properties of metal nano-objects. Here, we investigate the optical and vibrational properties of monodomain silver nanocubes synthesized by the chemical route, with edge length ranging from around 20 to 58 nm. The synthesized nanocrystals are not perfectly cubic and exhibit rounded edges and corners. This rounding was quantitatively taken into account by assimilating the shape of the nanocubes to superellipsoids. The effect of rounding on their optical response was clearly evidenced by localized surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy and supported by calculations based on the discrete dipole approximation method. The study of their acoustic vibrations by high-resolution low-frequency Raman scattering revealed a substructure of the T2g band, which was analyzed as a function of rounding. The measured frequencies are consistent with the existence of an anticrossing pattern of the two T2g branches. Such an avoided crossing in the T2g modes is clearly evidenced by calculating the vibrational frequencies of silver nanocubes using the Rayleigh-Ritz variational method that accounts for both their real size, shape, and cubic elasticity. These results show that it is possible to assess the rounding of nanocubes, including by means of ensemble spectroscopic measurements on well-calibrated particles.

Optomechanical Hot-Spots in Metallic Nanorod-Polymer Nanocomposites

Plasmonic coupling between adjacent metallic nanoparticles can be exploited for acousto-plasmonics, single-molecule sensing, and photochemistry. Light absorption or electron probes can be used to study plasmons and their interactions, but their use is challenging for disordered systems and colloids dispersed in insulating matrices. Here, we investigate the effect of plasmonic coupling on optomechanics with Brillouin light spectroscopy (BLS) in a prototypical metal-polymer nanocomposite, gold nanorods (Au NRs) in polyvinyl alcohol. The intensity of the light inelastically scattered on thermal phonons captured by BLS is strongly affected by the wavelength of the probing light. When light is resonant with the transverse plasmons, BLS reveals mostly the normal vibrational modes of single NRs. For lower energy off-resonant light, BLS is dominated by coupled bending modes of NR dimers. The experimental results, supported by optomechanical calculations, document plasmonically enhanced BLS and reveal energy-dependent confinement of coupled plasmons close to the tips of NR dimers, generating BLS hot-spots. Our work establishes BLS as an optomechanical probe of plasmons and promotes nanorod-soft matter nanocomposites for acousto-plasmonic applications.

Excitation and detection of acoustic phonons in nanoscale systems

Phonons play a key role in the physical properties of materials, and have long been a topic of study in physics. While the effects of phonons had historically been considered to be a hindrance, modern research has shown that phonons can be exploited due to their ability to couple to other excitations and consequently affect the thermal, dielectric, and electronic properties of solid state systems, greatly motivating the engineering of phononic structures. Advances in nanofabrication have allowed for structuring and phonon confinement even down to the nanoscale, drastically changing material properties. Despite developments in fabricating such nanoscale devices, the proper manipulation and characterization of phonons continues to be challenging. However, a fundamental understanding of these processes could enable the realization of key applications in diverse fields such as topological phononics, information technologies, sensing, and quantum electrodynamics, especially when integrated with existing electronic and photonic devices. Here, we highlight seven of the available methods for the excitation and detection of acoustic phonons and vibrations in solid materials, as well as advantages, disadvantages, and additional considerations related to their application. We then provide perspectives towards open challenges in nanophononics and how the additional understanding granted by these techniques could serve to enable the next generation of phononic technological applications.

Inelastic Light Scattering by Long Narrow Gold Nanocrystals: When Size, Shape, Crystallinity, and Assembly Matter

We report the synthesis of long narrow gold nanocrystals and the study of their vibrational dynamics using inelastic light-scattering measurements. Rich experimental spectra are obtained for monodomain gold nanorods and pentagonal twinned bipyramids. Their assignment involves diameter-dependent nontotally symmetric vibrations which are modeled in the framework of continuum elasticity by taking into account simultaneously the size, shape, and crystallinity of the nanocrystals. Light scattering by vibrations with angular momenta larger than 2 is reported. It is shown to increase with the ratio of the nanocrystals diameter to the interparticle separation. It originates from the plasmonic coupling due to the self-assembly of the nanocrystals after deposition.

Acoustic Mode Hybridization in a Single Dimer of Gold Nanoparticles

The acoustic vibrations of single monomers and dimers of gold nanoparticles were investigated by measuring for the first time their ultralow-frequency micro-Raman scattering. This experiment provides access not only to the frequency of the detected vibrational modes but also to their damping rate, which is obscured by inhomogeneous effects in measurements on ensembles of nano-objects. This allows a detailed analysis of the mechanical coupling occurring between two close nanoparticles (mediated by the polymer surrounding them) in the dimer case. Such coupling induces the hybridization of the vibrational modes of each nanoparticle, leading to the appearance in the Raman spectra of two ultralow-frequency modes corresponding to the out-of-phase longitudinal and transverse (with respect to the dimer axis) quasi-translations of the nanoparticles. Additionally, it is also shown to shift the frequency of the quadrupolar modes of the nanoparticles. Experimental results are interpreted using finite-element simulations, which enable the unambiguous identification of the detected modes and despite the simplifications made lead to a reasonable reproduction of their measured frequencies and quality factors. The demonstrated feasibility of low-frequency Raman scattering experiments on single nano-objects opens up new possibilities to improve the understanding of nanoscale vibrations with this technique being complementary with single nano-object time-resolved spectroscopy as it gives access to different vibrational modes.

Monitoring Reaction Paths Using Vibrational Spectroscopies: The Case of the Dehydrogenation of Propane toward Propylene on Pd-Doped Cu(111) Surface

Monitoring reaction paths is not only a fundamental scientific issue but also helps us to understand and optimize the catalytic process. Infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopies are powerful tools for detecting particular molecules or intermediate products as a result of their ability to provide the molecular "finger-print". However, theoretical modeling for the vibrational spectra of molecular adsorbates on metallic surfaces is a long-standing challenge, because accurate descriptions of the electronic structure for both the metallic substrates and adsorbates are required. In the present work, we applied a quasi-analytical IR and Raman simulation method to monitor the dehydrogenation of propane towards propylene on a Pd-doped Cu(111) surface in real-time. Different Pd ensembles were used to construct the single-atom catalyst (SAC). We found that the number of sublayer Pd atoms could only affect the intensity of the peak rather than the peak position on the vibrational spectra. However, with the dehydrogenation reaction proceeding, both IR and Raman spectra were changed greatly, which indicates that every reaction step can be distinguished from the point of view of vibrational spectroscopies. Additionally, we found that the catalytic process, which starts from different initial states, shows different spectral profiles. The present results suggest that the vibrational spectroscopies obtained by the high-precision simulations pave the way for identifying different catalytic reaction paths.
