Thermodynamics of single polyethylene and polybutylene glycols with hydrogen-bonding ends: A transition from looped to open conformations

Investigating the Hydrogen Bond-Induced Self-Assembly of Polysulfamides Using Molecular Simulations and Experiments

In this paper, we present a synergistic, experimental, and computational study of the self-assembly of N,N'-disubstituted polysulfamides driven by hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) between the H-bonding donor and acceptor groups present in repeating sulfamides as a function of the structural design of the polysulfamide backbone. We developed a coarse-grained (CG) polysulfamide model that captures the directionality of H-bonds between the sulfamide groups and used this model in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the self-assembly of these polymers in implicit solvent. The CGMD approach was validated by reproducing experimentally observed trends in the extent of crystallinity for three polysulfamides synthesized with aliphatic and/or aromatic repeating units. After validation of our CGMD approach, we computationally predicted the effect of repeat unit bulkiness, length, and uniformity of segment lengths in the polymers on the extent of orientational and positional order among the self-assembled polysulfamide chains, providing key design principles for tuning the extent of crystallinity in polysulfamides in experiments. Those computational predictions were then experimentally tested through the synthesis and characterization of polysulfamide architectures.

An Enhanced Scheme for Multiscale Modeling of Thermomechanical Properties of Polymer Bulks

While multiscale modeling significantly enhances the capability of molecular simulations of polymer systems, it is well realized that the systematically derived coarse-grained (CG) models generally underestimate the thermomechanical properties. In this work, a charge-based mapping scheme has been adopted to include explicit electrostatic interactions and benchmarked against two typical polymers, atactic poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS). The CG potentials are parameterized against the oligomer bulks of nine monomers per chain to match the essential structural features and the two basic pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) properties, which are obtained from the all-atomistic (AA) molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at a single elevated temperature. The so-parameterized CG potentials are extended with the MD method to simulate the two polymer bulks of one hundred monomers per chain over a wide temperature range. Without any scaling, all the simulated results, including mass densities and bulk moduli at room temperature, thermal expansion coefficients at rubbery and glassy states, and glass transition temperatures (T_g), compare well with the corresponding experimental data. The proposed scheme not only contributes to realistically simulating various thermomechanical properties of both apolar and polar polymers but also allows for directly simulating their electrical properties.

Morphology and thermodynamics of polymers with monofunctional hydrogen bonding ends in dilute and semidilute concentration

Rheological properties of supramolecular polymers (SMPs) depend on their equilibrium structure including the size, the number, and the topology of aggregates. A polymer with a hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) motif at both ends is one widely used precursor to build SMPs. Due to the complex interplay between chain stiffness, H-bonding interaction, polarity along a chain, and polymer conformational entropy, it is difficult to theoretically predict the structure of SMPs. In this work we investigate thermodynamics of SMPs with H-bonding ends in a wide range of densities. A replica exchange stochastic approximation Monte Carlo method with coarse-grained models for polyethylene and polybuthylene glycols is used. Our simulation shows that SMPs have two morphological transition lines with increasing temperature, a ring-linear transition, and a linear-free chain transition. The latter is a thermodynamic transition and turns out to be continuous. Comparing the two different spacers, we find that ring-linear transition temperatures differ from each other at the constant volume fraction due to different looping probabilities, which can be calculated from the average polymer size by mean field. However, the linear-free chain transition temperatures are similar because the entropic penalty to form a hydrogen bond mainly depends on the probability of finding H-bonding groups in a system, which is the same for both systems at a given volume fraction.
