High-Mobility Electrons in Aqueous Iodide Solutions

The photoexcitation of aqueous iodide solutions is a prototype for the generation of electrons in liquid water. Upon one-photon excitation, the precursors of the solvated electrons are localized states with a radius of a few angstroms. In contrast, with the aid of transient absorption spectroscopy at terahertz, near-infrared, and visible frequencies, we show that the two-photon absorption of ∼400 nm pulses can impulsively generate short-lived (∼250 fs), delocalized electrons that are released tens of angstroms away from the parent ion. We propose that these states can be ascribed to 5p → 6p transitions that, in turn, could be thought of as frustrated Rydberg orbitals or large radius excitons. By capitalizing on the unique capabilities of transient terahertz spectroscopy, we estimate that these delocalized states are characterized by an electronic mobility and diffusivity that are about 500 times greater than those of the fully relaxed electrons.

Phenomenology of Intermediate Molecular Dynamics at Metal-Oxide Interfaces

Reaction intermediates buried within a solid-liquid interface are difficult targets for physiochemical measurements. They are inherently molecular and locally dynamic, while their surroundings are extended by a periodic lattice on one side and the solvent dielectric on the other. Challenges compound on a metal-oxide surface of varied sites and especially so at its aqueous interface of many prominent reactions. Recently, phenomenological theory coupled with optical spectroscopy has become a more prominent tool for isolating the intermediates and their molecular dynamics. The following article reviews three examples of the SrTiO3-aqueous interface subject to the oxygen evolution from water: reaction-dependent component analyses of time-resolved intermediates, a Fano resonance of a mode at the metal-oxide-water interface, and reaction isotherms of metastable intermediates. The phenomenology uses parameters to encase what is unknown at a microscopic level to then circumscribe the clear and macroscopically tuned trends seen in the spectroscopic data.

Caught in the act: real-time observation of the solvent response that promotes excited-state proton transfer in pyranine

Photo-induced excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) reactions are of central importance in many biological and chemical processes. Identifying mechanistic details of the solvent reorganizations that facilitate proton transfer however, is challenging for current experimental and theoretical approaches. Using optical pump THz probe (OPTP) spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations, we were able to elucidate the ultrafast changes in the solvation environment for three derivatives of pyranine: the photoacid HPTS, the methoxy derivative MPTS, and the photobase OPTS. Experimentally, we find damped oscillations in the THz signal at short times and our simulations enable their assignment to vibrational energy transfer beatings between the photoexcited chromophore and nearby solvent molecules. The simulations of HPTS reveal strikingly efficient sub-ps energy transfer into a particular solvent mode, that is active near 4 THz, and which can provide the requisite energy required for solvent reorganization promoting proton transfer. Similar oscillations are present in the THz signal for all three derivatives, however the signal is damped rapidly for HPTS (within 0.4 ps) and more slowly for MPTS (within 1.4 ps) and OPTS (within 2.0 ps). For HPTS, we also characterize an additional phonon-like propagation of the proton into the bulk with a 140 ps period and an 83 ps damping time. Thermalization of the solvent occurs on a time scale exceeding 120 ps.

Terahertz Kerr Effect of Liquids

In recent years, tremendous advancements have been made in various technologies such as far-infrared, low-frequency Raman, and two-dimensional (2D) Raman terahertz (THz) spectroscopies. A coherent method has emerged from numerous experimental and theoretical investigations of molecular dynamics in liquids by comparing linear and non-linear spectroscopic techniques. Intermolecular hydrogen bond vibration, molecular reorientation motion, and interaction between molecule/ionic solute and hydrogen bonds have been demonstrated to occur in the THz region, which are closely related to their physical/chemical properties and structural dynamics. However, precise probing of various modes of motion is difficult because of the complexity of the collective and cooperative motion of molecules and spectral overlap of related modes. With the development of THz science and technology, current state-of-the-art THz sources can generate pulsed electric fields with peak intensities of the order of microvolts per centimeter (MV/cm). Such strong fields enable the use of THz waves as the light source for non-linear polarization of the medium and in turn leads to the development of the emerging THz Kerr effect (TKE) technique. Many low-frequency molecular motions, such as the collective directional motion of molecules and cooperative motion under the constraint of weak intermolecular interactions, are resonantly excited by an intense THz electric field. Thus, the TKE technique provides an interesting prospect for investigating low-frequency dynamics of different media. In view of this, this paper first summarizes the research work on TKE spectroscopy by taking a solid material without low-frequency molecular motions as an example. Starting from the principle of TKE technology and its application in investigating the properties of solid matter, we have explored the low-frequency molecular dynamics of liquid water and aqueous solutions using TKE. Liquid water is a core of life and possesses many extraordinary physical and biochemical properties. The hydrogen bond network plays a crucial role in these properties and is the main reason for its various kinetic and thermodynamic properties, which differ from those of other liquids. However, the structure of the hydrogen bond network between water and solutes is not well known. Therefore, evaluating the hydrogen bond-related kinetic properties of liquid water is important.

Coumarin 343 in aqueous solution: theoretical analysis of absorption

Vibronic coupling and hydration were taken into account when describing the absorption of coumarin C343 (both neutral and anionic forms) in an aqueous media. It was shown that the B3LYP functional with the 6-31 +  + G(d,p) basis set and the IEFPCM solvent continuum model give theoretical vibronic absorption spectra, which are coincide with the experimental ones. Of the structural differences between C343⁰ and C343^-, there is a different twisting of the carboxyl group additionally changing due to excitation. Upon excitation, a significant shift in the electron density occurs from the C10 atom to the C4 atom only. Thus, a charge transfer on the scale of the entire molecule does not occur. Different hydration complexes with strongly bound water molecules have been analyzed.

Integration of a rapid scanning technique into THz time-domain spectrometers for nonlinear THz spectroscopy measurements

We have implemented a rapid scanning technique into THz time-domain spectrometers using an oscillating frictionless delay line, especially adapted for nonlinear THz experiments. Thereby we were able to increase the dynamic range of THz measurements in the frequency range from 40 to 200 cm-1 by up to 24 dB and reduce the scanning time by up to a factor of 200. We report here test measurements on TDS-setups at repetition rates of 80 MHz and 5 kHz. The dynamic range exceeds 64 dB, which allows to record even small changes in the THz absorption upon optical excitation by a THz probe, covering the frequency range of the intermolecular modes and the phonon bands. We demonstrate the potential of this technique for optical-pump THz-probe experiments using a 70 μm thick high-resistivity silicon, excited by 400 nm, ∼50 fs pulses as a sample.
