Motor crosslinking augments elasticity in active nematics

In active materials, uncoordinated internal stresses lead to emergent long-range flows. An understanding of how the behavior of active materials depends on mesoscopic (hydrodynamic) parameters is developing, but there remains a gap in knowledge concerning how hydrodynamic parameters depend on the properties of microscopic elements. In this work, we combine experiments and multiscale modeling to relate the structure and dynamics of active nematics composed of biopolymer filaments and molecular motors to their microscopic properties, in particular motor processivity, speed, and valency. We show that crosslinking of filaments by both motors and passive crosslinkers not only augments the contributions to nematic elasticity from excluded volume effects but dominates them. By altering motor kinetics we show that a competition between motor speed and crosslinking results in a nonmonotonic dependence of nematic flow on motor speed. By modulating passive filament crosslinking we show that energy transfer into nematic flow is in large part dictated by crosslinking. Thus motor proteins both generate activity and contribute to nematic elasticity. Our results provide new insights for rationally engineering active materials.

Competition between lanes and transient jammed clusters in driven binary mixtures

We consider mixtures of oppositely driven particles, showing that their nonequilibrium steady states form lanes parallel to the drive, which coexist with transient jammed clusters where particles are temporarily immobilized. We analyze the interplay between these two types of nonequilibrium pattern formation, including their implications for macroscopic demixing perpendicular to the drive. Finite-size scaling analysis indicates that there is no critical driving force associated with demixing, which appears as a crossover in finite systems. We attribute this effect to the disruption of long-ranged order by the transient jammed clusters.

Kinetic temperature and pressure of an active Tonks gas

Using computer simulation and analytical theory, we study an active analog of the well-known Tonks gas, where active Brownian particles are confined to a periodic one-dimensional (1D) channel. By introducing the notion of a kinetic temperature, we derive an accurate analytical expression for the pressure and clarify the paradoxical behavior where active Brownian particles confined to 1D exhibit anomalous clustering but no motility-induced phase transition. More generally, this work provides a deeper understanding of pressure in active systems as we uncover a unique link between the kinetic temperature and swim pressure valid for active Brownian particles in higher dimensions.

Effect of speed fluctuations on the collective dynamics of active disks

Numerical simulations are performed on the collective dynamics of active disks, whose self-propulsion speed (U) varies in time, and whose orientation evolves according to rotational Brownian motion. Two protocols for the evolution of speed are considered: (i) a deterministic one involving a periodic change in U at a frequency ω; and (ii) a stochastic one in which the speeds are drawn from a power-law distribution at time-intervals governed by a Poissonian process of rate β. In the first case, an increase in ω causes the disks to go from a clustered state to a homogeneous one through an apparent phase-transition, provided that the direction of self-propulsion is allowed to reverse. Similarly, in the second case, for a fixed value of β, the extent of cluster-breakup is larger when reversals in the self-propulsion direction are permitted. Motility-induced phase separation of the disks may therefore be avoided in active matter suspensions in which the constituents are allowed to reverse their self-propulsion direction, immaterial of the precise temporal nature of the reversal (deterministic or stochastic). Equally, our results demonstrate that phase separation could occur even in the absence of a time-averaged motility of an individual active agent, provided that the rate of direction reversals is smaller than the orientational diffusion rate.

Mechanical theory of nonequilibrium coexistence and motility-induced phase separation

Nonequilibrium phase transitions are routinely observed in both natural and synthetic systems. The ubiquity of these transitions highlights the conspicuous absence of a general theory of phase coexistence that is broadly applicable to both nonequilibrium and equilibrium systems. Here, we present a general mechanical theory for phase separation rooted in ideas explored nearly a half-century ago in the study of inhomogeneous fluids. The core idea is that the mechanical forces within the interface separating two coexisting phases uniquely determine coexistence criteria, regardless of whether a system is in equilibrium or not. We demonstrate the power and utility of this theory by applying it to active Brownian particles, predicting a quantitative phase diagram for motility-induced phase separation in both two and three dimensions. This formulation additionally allows for the prediction of novel interfacial phenomena, such as an increasing interface width while moving deeper into the two-phase region, a uniquely nonequilibrium effect confirmed by computer simulations. The self-consistent determination of bulk phase behavior and interfacial phenomena offered by this mechanical perspective provide a concrete path forward toward a general theory for nonequilibrium phase transitions.

Tuning nonequilibrium phase transitions with inertia

In striking contrast to equilibrium systems, inertia can profoundly alter the structure of active systems. Here, we demonstrate that driven systems can exhibit effective equilibrium-like states with increasing particle inertia, despite rigorously violating the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Increasing inertia progressively eliminates motility-induced phase separation and restores equilibrium crystallization for active Brownian spheres. This effect appears to be general for a wide class of active systems, including those driven by deterministic time-dependent external fields, whose nonequilibrium patterns ultimately disappear with increasing inertia. The path to this effective equilibrium limit can be complex, with finite inertia sometimes acting to accentuate nonequilibrium transitions. The restoration of near equilibrium statistics can be understood through the conversion of active momentum sources to passive-like stresses. Unlike truly equilibrium systems, the effective temperature is now density dependent, the only remnant of the nonequilibrium dynamics. This density-dependent temperature can in principle introduce departures from equilibrium expectations, particularly in response to strong gradients. Our results provide additional insight into the effective temperature ansatz while revealing a mechanism to tune nonequilibrium phase transitions.

From predicting to learning dissipation from pair correlations of active liquids

Active systems, which are driven out of equilibrium by local non-conservative forces, can adopt unique behaviors and configurations. Towards designing such materials, an important challenge is to precisely connect the static structure of active systems to the dissipation of energy induced by the local driving. Here, we use tools from liquid-state theories and machine learning to take on these challenges. We first demonstrate analytically for an isotropic active matter system that dissipation and pair correlations are closely related when driving forces behave like an active temperature. We then extend a nonequilibrium mean-field framework for predicting these pair correlations which, unlike most existing approaches, is applicable even for strongly interacting particles and far from equilibrium, to predict dissipation in these systems. Based on this theory, we reveal analytically a robust relation between dissipation and structure which holds even as the system approaches a nonequilibrium phase transition. Finally, we construct a neural network which maps static configurations of particles to their dissipation rate without any prior knowledge of the underlying dynamics. Our results open novel perspectives on the interplay between dissipation and organization out-of-equilibrium.

Bacterial Filamentation Drives Colony Chirality

Chirality is ubiquitous in nature, with consequences at the cellular and tissue scales. As Escherichia coli colonies expand radially, an orthogonal component of growth creates a pinwheel-like pattern that can be revealed by fluorescent markers. To elucidate the mechanistic basis of this colony chirality, we investigated its link to left-handed, single-cell twisting during E. coli elongation. While chemical and genetic manipulation of cell width altered single-cell twisting handedness, colonies ceased to be chiral rather than switching handedness, and anaerobic growth altered colony chirality without affecting single-cell twisting. Chiral angle increased with increasing temperature even when growth rate decreased. Unifying these findings, we discovered that colony chirality was associated with the propensity for cell filamentation. Inhibition of cell division accentuated chirality under aerobic growth and generated chirality under anaerobic growth. Thus, regulation of cell division is intrinsically coupled to colony chirality, providing a mechanism for tuning macroscale spatial patterning. IMPORTANCE Chiral objects, such as amino acids, are distinguishable from their mirror image. For living systems, the fundamental mechanisms relating cellular handedness to chirality at the multicellular scale remain largely mysterious. Here, we use chemical, genetic, and environmental perturbations of Escherichia coli to investigate whether pinwheel patterns in bacterial colonies are directly linked to single-cell growth behaviors. We discover that chirality can be abolished without affecting single-cell twisting; instead, the degree of chirality was linked to the proportion of highly elongated cells at the colony edge. Inhibiting cell division boosted the degree of chirality during aerobic growth and even introduced chirality to otherwise achiral colonies during anaerobic growth. These findings reveal a fascinating connection between cell division and macroscopic colony patterning.

Complete absorption of topologically protected waves

Chiral edge states can transmit energy along imperfect interfaces in a topologically robust and unidirectional manner when protected by bulk-boundary correspondence. However, in continuum systems, the number of states at an interface can depend on boundary conditions. Here we design interfaces that host a net flux of the number of modes into a region, trapping incoming energy. As a realization, we present a model system of two topological fluids composed of counter-spinning particles, which are separated by a boundary that transitions from a fluid-fluid interface into a no-slip wall. In these fluids, chiral edge states disappear, which implies non-Hermiticity and leads to an interplay between topology and energy dissipation. Solving the fluid equations of motion, we find explicit expressions for the disappearing modes. We then conclude that energy dissipation is sped up by mode trapping. Instead of making efficient waveguides, our paper shows how topology can be exploited for applications towards acoustic absorption, shielding, and soundproofing.

Phase Transitions of Oppositely Charged Colloidal Particles Driven by Alternating Current Electric Field

We study systems containing oppositely charged colloidal particles under applied alternating current electric fields (AC fields) using overdamped Langevin dynamics simulations in three dimensions. We obtain jammed bands perpendicular to the field direction under intermediate frequencies and lanes parallel with the field under low frequencies. These structures also depend upon the particle charges. The pathway for generating jammed bands follows a stepwise mechanism, and intermediate bands are observed during lane formation in some systems. We investigate the component of the pressure tensors in the direction parallel to the field and observe that the jammed to lane transition occurs at a critical value for this pressure. We also find that the stable steady states appear to satisfy the principle of maximum entropy production. Our results may help to improve the understand of the underlying mechanisms for these types of dynamic phase transitions and the subsequent cooperative assemblies of colloidal particles under such non-equilibrium conditions.

Entropy production fluctuations encode collective behavior in active matter

We derive a general lower bound on distributions of entropy production in interacting active matter systems. The bound is tight in the limit that interparticle correlations are small and short-ranged, which we explore in four canonical active matter models. In all models studied, the bound is weak where collective fluctuations result in long-ranged correlations, which subsequently links the locations of phase transitions to enhanced entropy production fluctuations. We develop a theory for the onset of enhanced fluctuations and relate it to specific phase transitions in active Brownian particles. We also derive optimal control forces that realize the dynamics necessary to tune dissipation and manipulate the system between phases. In so doing, we uncover a general relationship between entropy production and pattern formation in active matter, as well as ways of controlling it.

Characterizing the spatiotemporal evolution of paramagnetic colloids in time-varying magnetic fields with Minkowski functionals

Phase separation processes are widely utilized to assemble complex fluids into novel materials. These separation processes can be thermodynamically driven due to changes in concentration, pressure, or temperature. Phase separation can also be induced with external stimuli, such as magnetic fields, resulting in novel nonequilibrium systems. However, how external stimuli influence the transition pathways between phases has not been explored in detail. Here, we describe the phase separation dynamics of superparamagnetic colloids in time-varying magnetic fields. An initially homogeneous colloidal suspension can transition from a continuous colloidal phase with voids to discrete colloidal clusters, through a bicontinuous phase formed via spinodal decomposition. The type of transition depends on the particle concentration and magnitude of the applied magnetic field. The spatiotemporal evolution of the microstructure during the nucleation and growth period is quantified by analyzing the morphology using Minkowski functionals. The characteristic length of the colloidal systems was determined to correlate with system variables such as magnetic field strength, particle concentration, and time in a power-law scaling relationship. Understanding the interplay between particle concentration and applied magnetic field allows for better control of the phases observed in these magnetically tunable colloidal systems.

Transverse Density Fluctuations around the Ground State Distribution of Counterions near One Charged Plate: Stochastic Density Functional View

We consider the Dean–Kawasaki (DK) equation of overdamped Brownian particles that forms the basis of the stochastic density functional theory. Recently, the linearized DK equation has successfully reproduced the full Onsager theory of symmetric electrolyte conductivity. In this paper, the linear DK equation is applied to investigate density fluctuations around the ground state distribution of strongly coupled counterions near a charged plate, focusing especially on the transverse dynamics along the plate surface. Consequently, we find a crossover scale above which the transverse density dynamics appears frozen and below which diffusive behavior of counterions can be observed on the charged plate. The linear DK equation provides a characteristic length of the dynamical crossover that is similar to the Wigner–Seitz radius used in equilibrium theory for the 2D one-component plasma, which is our main result. Incidentally, general representations of longitudinal dynamics vertical to the plate further suggest the existence of advective and electrical reverse-flows; these effects remain to be quantitatively investigated.

Optimizing active work: Dynamical phase transitions, collective motion, and jamming

Active work measures how far the local self-forcing of active particles translates into real motion. Using population Monte Carlo methods, we investigate large deviations in the active work for repulsive active Brownian disks. Minimizing the active work generically results in dynamical arrest; in contrast, despite the lack of aligning interactions, trajectories of high active work correspond to a collectively moving, aligned state. We use heuristic and analytic arguments to explain the origin of dynamical phase transitions separating the arrested, typical, and aligned regimes.

Topological localization in out-of-equilibrium dissipative systems

In this paper, we report that notions of topological protection can be applied to stationary configurations that are driven far from equilibrium by active, dissipative processes. We consider two physically disparate systems: stochastic networks governed by microscopic single-particle dynamics, and collections of driven interacting particles described by coarse-grained hydrodynamic theory. We derive our results by mapping to well-known electronic models and exploiting the resulting correspondence between a bulk topological number and the spectrum of dissipative modes localized at the boundary. For the Markov networks, we report a general procedure to uncover the topological properties in terms of the transition rates. For the active fluid on a substrate, we introduce a topological interpretation of fluid dissipative modes at the edge. In both cases, the presence of dissipative couplings to the environment that break time-reversal symmetry are crucial to ensuring topological protection. These examples constitute proof of principle that notions of topological protection do indeed extend to dissipative processes operating out of equilibrium. Such topologically robust boundary modes have implications for both biological and synthetic systems.
