The trisulfur radical ion S3 •- controls platinum transport by hydrothermal fluids

Inorganic Polysulfides in Solution: Structural Properties and Conformational Isomerism

We present a comprehensive theoretical examination of the structural properties of dianionic polysulfides [Sn]2- (n = 2-6), their conjugated monoacids [HSn]- (n = 2-6), and a selection of 1e--oxidized radical anions [Sn]•- (n = 2-4), in aqueous and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solutions. We investigated the structures and stabilities of various conformational isomers within these families of compounds by employing Quantum Mechanics-Molecular Mechanics (QM-MM) Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. The explicit inclusion of solvent molecules in the calculations revealed stable conformational structures that were previously unreported and might have appreciable concentrations in real systems. The interconversions between the isomeric structures proceed on the order of hundreds of picoseconds and are energetically similar to the isomerization processes in substituted cyclohexanes. We also conducted a detailed analysis of the stability of different isomers of the radical anion [S4]•- in solution. Our findings highlight the significant influence of the solvent on the isomerizations, a result that could be particularly relevant for enhancing the performance of metal-sulfur batteries.

Structures and Spectroscopic Properties of Polysulfide Radical Anions: A Theoretical Perspective

The potential involvement of polysulfide radical anions Sn•- is a recurring theme in discussions of the basic and applied chemistry of elemental sulfur. However, while the spectroscopic features for n = 2 and 3 are well-established, information on the structures and optical characteristics of the larger congeners (n = 4-8) is sparse. To aid identification of these ephemeral species we have performed PCM-corrected DFT calculations to establish the preferred geometries for Sn•- (n = 4-8) in the polar media in which they are typically generated. TD-DFT calculations were then used to determine the number, nature and energies of the electronic excitations possible for these species. Numerical reliability of the approach was tested by comparison of the predicted and experimental excitation energies found for S2•- and S3•-. The low-energy (near-IR) transitions found for the two acyclic isomers of S4•- (C2h and C2v symmetry) and for S5•- (Cs symmetry) can be understood by extension of the simple HMO π-only chain model that serves for S2•- and S3•-. By contrast, the excitations predicted for the quasi-cyclic structures Sn•- (n = 6-8) are better described in terms of σ → σ* processes within a localized 2c-3e manifold.

Metal oxide nanoparticles embedded in porous carbon for sulfur absorption under hydrothermal conditions

MO_x (M = Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Ce) nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in porous C with uniform diameter and dispersion were synthesized, with potential application as S-absorbents to protect catalysts from S-poisoning in catalytic hydrothermal gasification (cHTG) of biomass. S-absorption performance of MO_x/C was evaluated by reacting the materials with diethyl disulfide at HTG conditions (450 °C, 30 MPa, 15 min). Their S-absorption capacity followed the order CuO_x/C > CeO_x/C ≈ ZnO/C > MnO_x/C > FeO_x/C. S was absorbed in the first four through the formation of Cu_1.8S, Ce₂S₃, ZnS, and MnS, respectively, with a capacity of 0.17, 0.12, 0.11, and 0.09 mol_S mol_M^-1. The structure of MO_x/C (M = Zn, Cu, Mn) evolved significantly during S-absorption reaction, with the formation of larger agglomerates and separation of MO_x particles from porous C. The formation of ZnS NPs and their aggregation in place of hexagonal ZnO crystals indicate a dissolution/precipitation mechanism. Note that aggregated ZnS NPs barely sinter under these conditions. Cu(0) showed a preferential sulfidation over Cu₂O, the sulfidation of the latter seemingly following the same mechanism as for ZnO. In contrast, FeO_x/C and CeO_x/C showed remarkable structural stability with their NPs well-dispersed within the C matrix after reaction. MO_x dissolution in water (from liquid to supercritical state) was modeled and a correlation between solubility and particle growth was found, comforting the hypothesis of the importance of an Ostwald ripening mechanism. CeO_x/C with high structural stability and promising S-absorption capacity was suggested as a promising bulk absorbent for sulfides in cHTG of biomass.

Nanoantioxidant Materials: Nanoengineering Inspired by Nature

Oxidants are very active compounds that can cause damage to biological systems under specific environmental conditions. One effective way to counterbalance these adverse effects is the use of anti-oxidants. At low concentrations, an antioxidant is defined as a compound that can delay, control, or prevent an oxidative process. Antioxidants exist in plants, soil, and minerals; therefore, nature is a rich source of natural antioxidants, such as tocopherols and polyphenols. In nature, antioxidants perform in tandem with their bio-environment, which may tune their activity and protect them from degradation. In vitro use of antioxidants, i.e., out of their biomatrix, may encounter several drawbacks, such as auto-oxidation and polymerization. Artificial nanoantioxidants can be developed via surface modification of a nanoparticle with an antioxidant that can be either natural or synthetic, directly mimicking a natural antioxidant system. In this direction, state-of-the-art nanotechnology has been extensively incorporated to overcome inherent drawbacks encountered in vitro use of antioxidants, i.e., out of their biomatrix, and facilitate the production and use of antioxidants on a larger scale. Biomimetic nanoengineering has been adopted to optimize bio-medical antioxidant systems to improve stability, control release, enhance targeted administration, and overcome toxicity and biocompatibility issues. Focusing on biotechnological sciences, this review highlights the importance of nanoengineering in developing effective antioxidant structures and comparing the effectiveness of different nanoengineering methods. Additionally, this study gathers and clarifies the different antioxidant mechanisms reported in the literature and provides a clear picture of the existing evaluation methods, which can provide vital insights into bio-medical applications.
