Fatty acid composition and energy allocation in muscle and gonad tissues indicate that the female mackerel icefish Champsocephalus gunnari is an income breeder

The energy density and fatty acid composition profiles of the muscle and gonad tissues of female mackerel icefish Champsocephalus gunnari from the South Orkney Islands in Antarctica were investigated throughout ovarian development to better understand the reproductive allocation strategy and the role of specific fatty acids in the reproductive process. Energy density in gonads increased from resting to spawning stages as the ovaries developed (19.60-25.10 kJ g-1 dry mass [DM]). In contrast, energy density in muscles remained constant throughout ovarian development (20.13-22.87 kJ g-1 DM), suggesting that the spawning events of the C. gunnari rely on energy income from feeding rather than on the energy stored in body. In addition, the variation in fatty acid composition between muscle and gonad tissues may reflect the role of main FAs as energy source. These results suggest that C. gunnari may utilize an income breeding strategy.

Comparative insights into the integration mechanism of neuropeptides to starvation and temperature stress

Stress is known as the process of biological responses evoked by internal or external stimuli. The ability to sense, integrate and respond to stress signals is a requisite for life. Temperature and photoperiod are very important environmental factors for animals. In addition, stress signals can also be inputted from peripheral tissue, such as starvation and inflammation. Through afferent pathways, stress signals input to the central nervous system (CNS), where various signals will integrate, and the integrated information will transmit to the peripheral effectors. As the regulators of neural activity, neuropeptides play important roles in these processes. The present review summarizes recent findings about the integration mechanism of stress signals in the CNS, emphasizing on the role of neuropeptides.

Photo-thermal regulation of neuropeptide Y (NPY) expression in ovarian follicles and ovarian activity of the catfish, Clarias batrachus

Authors have recently reported a gradual increase in neuropeptide Y expression in the ovarian follicles of Clarias batrachus with the progression of oogenesis, coinciding with increasing photoperiod and temperature. This indicates the involvement of photoperiod and temperature in controlling NPY expression. Therefore, a study was designed to investigate the role of photoperiod and temperature in regulation of NPY expression in ovarian follicles. The catfish were exposed to different photo-thermal regimes during the late-quiescence and late-recrudescence phases for one month, and the expression of NPY was analyzed along with other ovarian activities. Though the exposure of catfish to long photoperiod induced a marginal increase (1.5 fold) in NPY expression in follicular cells, the high temperature stimulated its expression more effectively (6-10 fold), irrespective of photoperiodic exposures. Exposure to long photoperiod and high temperature together induced NPY expression maximally in granulosa and thecal cells of fully grown oocytes, but exposure to low temperature decreased its expression significantly. The oogenic and steroidogenic activities were also promoted simultaneously after the exposure to high temperature and long photoperiod alone or in combination. However, the low temperature exposure suppressed the ovarian activities leading to atresia of advanced follicles. Thus it is suggested that photoperiod and temperature both affect NPY expression and ovarian recrudescence in fish but the influences of temperature seem to be more prominent.

Trans-omics analyses revealed differences in hormonal and nutritional status between wild and cultured female Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica)

Long-term stock decline in the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) is a serious issue. To reduce natural resource utilization in Japan, artificial hormonal induction of maturation and fertilization in the Japanese eel has been intensively studied. Recent experiment on feminized (by feeding a commercial diet containing estradiol-17β for first half year) cultured female eels have shown ovulation problems, which is seldom observed in captured wild female eels. Therefore, the aim of this study is to try to investigate causes of ovulation problem frequently seen in cultured female eels by comparative trans-omics analyses. The omics data showed low growth hormone and luteinizing hormone transcription levels in the brain and low sex hormone–binding globulin transcription levels in the liver of the cultured female eels. In addition, it was found that high accumulation of glucose-6-phosphate and, maltose in the liver of the cultured female eel. It was also found that docosahexaenoic (DHA) acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and arachidonic acid (ARA) ratios in cultured female eels were quite different from wild female eels. The data suggested that ovulation problem in cultured female eels was possibly resulted from prolonged intake of a high-carbohydrate diet and/or suboptimal DHA/EPA/ARA ratios in a diet.

Importance of Photoperiods in the Regulation of Ovarian Activities in Indian Major Carp Catla catla in an Annual Cycle

The present study attempted for the first time to explore the importance of photoperiod in the regulation of seasonal ovarian functions in any subtropical major carp. Adult Indian major carp Catla catla were transferred to a long photoperiod (LP; LD 16:8) or a short photoperiod (SP; LD 8:16) for 30 days on 4 dates corresponding to the beginnings of 4 reproductive phases in an annual cycle, and responsiveness of the ovary was evaluated by comparison with the gonadal weight (IG), relative number of developing oocytes, serum levels of vitellogenin, and the activity of 2 important steroidogenic enzymes, that is, Δ53β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and 17.β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, in the ovary of fish in a natural photoperiod. Exposure of fish to LP during the preparatory phase (February-March) resulted in a significant ( p < 0.001) increase in the values of vitellogenin and in the activity of both the steroidogenic enzymes but not in the ovarian weight and in the relative number of different stages of oocytes. A more stimulatory influence of LP was noted during the prespawning phase (April-May), when precocious maturation of ovary was evident from a significant ( p < 0.001) rise in the values of each studied features of ovarian functions. However, no ovarian response was found when the fish were transferred to LP during the spawning (July-August) and the postspawning (September-October) phases. On the other hand, the SP was found to have an inhibitory influence on ovarian growth and maturation during the prespawning and the spawning phases or to have no influences on ovarian functions during the preparatory and the postspawning phases of an annual cycle. The results of our study provide the first evidence that photoperiod per se plays an important role in the seasonal maturation of ovary in a subtropical freshwater major carp.

Temperature dependent action of growth hormone on somatic growth and testicular activities of the catfish, Clarias batrachus

Effects of growth hormone on somatic growth and testicular activities were studied during late quiescence and early recrudescence phases of the reproductive cycle of the catfish, Clarias batrachus. The administration of exogenous growth hormone (GH) during the late quiescence phase (December-January; ambient water temperature-15.2±1°C) did not influence the somatic growth as well as the testicular activity, as no change in body weight, testis weight, plasma level of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and testicular morphology was detected following GH treatment, though the plasma testosterone was marginally increased. While during the early recrudescence phase (March-April; ambient water temperature-28.1±2°C), GH treatment promoted the production of insulin like growth factor-I and testicular steroidogenic activity in a dose dependent manner, as was evident from the significant increase in the circulating levels of testosterone and estradiol-17β. GH treatment also increased body weight, testicular weight and gonadosomatic index, suggesting its involvement in testicular development. The GH treatment promoted spermatogonial proliferation and accelerated the spermatogenic process in the present catfish. These results, thus, suggest that GH influences the somatic growth and testicular activities depending on the temperature of the rearing water; warmer temperature and longer photoperiod promote testicular steroidogenic and spermatogenic activities in fish. This study has immense practical use in fisheries science.

Reproductive biology of freshwater fishes from the Venezuelan floodplains

This review describes the endocrine changes that occur during the annual reproductive cycle of Pygocentrus cariba, Pimelodus blochii, and Oxydoras sifontesi and their relationships with the environmental characteristics of Venezuelan floodplains. Most reproductive studies of teleosts have focused on changes that occur during annual cycles in temperate species but, in tropical fish, this has been examined less frequently. P. cariba, P. blochii, and O. sifontesi are seasonal breeders widely distributed along the Orinoco River. Under natural conditions they have an annual gonadal cycle closely related to changes in the annual hydrology cycle of the Orinoco River which defines two seasons on the floodplain: inundation and isolation. The reproductive cycle of these species seems to be controlled by cues from the external environment. Relevant data about gonadal maturation, for example gonadosomatic index and sexual hormones secretion, are contrasted. The role of catecholamines in neuroendocrine control of the reproductive axis is also considered in this work.

Seasonal and circadian time-dependent dual action of GH on somatic growth and ovarian development in the Asian catfish, Clarias batrachus (Linn.): role of temperature

Effect of growth hormone (GH), injected either at the morning or evening, on the somatic and ovarian development of the Asian catfish, Clarias batrachus was studied during the late quiescence and early recrudescence phase of the reproductive cycle. GH treatment during the late quiescence phase (December-January; 11L: 13D, average water temperature 16.2+/-1 degrees C) failed to exert any impact on the somatic or ovarian development, except that it increased plasma testosterone marginally, and decreased hepatic level of triglycerides (TG); while during the early recrudescence phase (March-April; 12.4L: 11.20D; average water temperature-28.4+/-2 degrees C), GH had significant circadian time-dependent effect on somatic and ovarian development. GH injection at morning stimulated ovarian growth and development, as was evident from the dose-dependent significant increase in ovarian weight, gonadosomatic index, plasma levels of testosterone and estradiol-17beta following GH treatment. The ovarian morphology also revealed the advancement in follicular development in GH treated fish. GH also induced remarkable increase in ovarian levels of TG, free cholesterol (CF) and phospholipids (PL) with concomitant declines in their hepatic levels. However, evening hour GH injection provoked appreciable increase in body weight without having any significant impact on ovarian weight and GSI. Few oocytes in the ovary of evening hour GH treated fish exhibited advanced stages of development, but number of such advanced stage oocytes was significantly much less than the morning hour GH injected fish. Ovarian TG and PL remained unchanged, while their hepatic levels were increased. The temporal synergism between GH and other intrinsic factors regulating body growth and gonadal development may be suggested herewith to be considered prior to administration of GH in fishes. This study has immense practical use in aquaculture.
