Assessing the impact of draught load pulling on welfare in equids

About 112 million working equids are the source of income for 600 million people globally. Many equids are used for pulling loads (up to 15,000 kg per day) to transport goods. Most of them are associated with brick kilns, mining, and agriculture industries in developing countries. They may suffer from welfare issues such as overloading, being beaten, and being forced to work for long periods. These issues may occur due to a poor understanding of load-pulling equids. Understanding their capabilities and the elements that influence them is critical for efficient performance and welfare. The measurement of stride characteristics and gait kinematics can reveal loading adaptations and help identify loading limitations. It is known that both loading and fatigue change the locomotor patterns of load-pulling horses. Heart rate is a stress quantifying metric and an important representative of the speed of work and draught force. Heart rate variability is a regularly used statistic to quantify a physiological response to stresses, but it has never been used for load-pulling equids. Changes in blood lactate, nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide contents are reliable biochemical indicators of the effects of load pulling. Changes in plasma cortisol levels reflect the intensity of exercise and stress levels in horses while pulling a load. However, eye blink rate is a cheap, simple, and immediate indicator of acute equine stress, and we suggest it may be used to aid in load-pulling equine welfare assessment. However, further research is needed for a standardized and evidence-based draught load pulling capacity of working horses, mules, and donkeys.

Benefits and risks of barefoot harness racing in Standardbred trotters

There is a lack of research on the benefits and risks of shoeing conditions in harness racing. Thus, our objectives were to: (a) investigate whether velocity times (VT; s/km) are affected by racing unshod (N = 76,932 records on 5,247 horses); (b) determine the potential risks of galloping, being penalized, and disqualification when competing unshod (N = 111,755 records on 6,423 horses); and (c) identify additional environmental factors that affect VT and risks. VT was found to be significantly influenced by shoeing condition (e.g., unshod, shod front, shod hind, or fully shod), but also by sex, age, season, track, track condition, start method, start position, distance, and driver-horse performance level (p < 2e-16). The risks of galloping and disqualification were significantly influenced by shoeing condition, sex, age, season, track, start method, start position, or driver-horse performance level (p ≤ .05). Horses racing unshod had 0.7 s/km lower VT than fully shod horses and showed better performance when racing on neutral tracks during the late summer than horses with other shoeing conditions during the same period. However, racing unshod increased the relative risks of galloping and disqualification by 15%-35% in all seasons. Horses shod only on the hind hooves showed better performance than fully shod horses, without higher risks associated with competing unshod.

Objectively measured movement asymmetry in yearling Standardbred trotters

BACKGROUND

Lameness evaluation of Standardbred trotters can be challenging due to discrepancies in observed movement asymmetry between in-hand and track exercise, and between different trotting speeds. There are few studies on objective measurement of movement in Standardbreds, and little knowledge regarding biological variation and clinical significance of measured movement asymmetry in this breed.

OBJECTIVES

To quantify the prevalence and magnitude of objectively measured movement asymmetry in young Standardbred trotters, and identify associations with trainer, sex, height, track type and in-hand measurement prior to or after track trials.

STUDY DESIGN

Cross-sectional, observational study.

METHODS

A total of 114 Standardbred yearlings were evaluated with a wireless inertial sensor system during trot in-hand and when driven on a track. After exclusions relating to lameness or technical difficulties, 103 horses were included in the study; 77 were evaluated in-hand and on the track, 24 only in-hand and 2 only on the track.

RESULTS

Front and/or hindlimb parameters were above asymmetry thresholds previously established for other breeds during in-hand trials for 94 (93%) horses and during track trials for 74 (94%) horses. Most horses showed mild asymmetry. A minority of horses (20%) switched side of the asymmetry for one or more parameters between in-hand and track trials. Mixed model analyses revealed no significant effects of trial mode (in-hand or track trial, in-hand trial pre- or post-track trial, straight or oval track), trainer or horse height. Females had a significant but small reduction in asymmetry in one front limb parameter (HD_max ) compared with males (1.7 mm, 95% CI 0.18-3.28, P = .03).

MAIN LIMITATIONS

High data variability, reflected in large trial standard deviations, relating mainly to a lack of horse compliance.

CONCLUSIONS

A high proportion of Standardbred yearlings showed movement asymmetries. There was no group-level effect between in-hand and track trials, however, considerable individual variation was observed.

Clinical findings and prognosis of interference injuries to the palmar aspect of the forelimbs in Standardbred racehorses: A study on 74 cases

BACKGROUND

Information on interference injuries in racehorses is lacking.

OBJECTIVE

To describe clinical findings and prognosis of palmar forelimb interference injuries in Standardbreds.

STUDY DESIGN

Retrospective cohort study.

METHODS

Records of 74 racehorses sustaining palmar forelimb interference injuries were studied; 7 occurred during training and 67 during racing. The number of starts before injury, hind shoeing status, gait penalties and racing speeds in cases occurring during racing were compared with negative controls (67 age, sex and speed category matched horses) from the same races. The number of starts and racing speed in 30 racing days preceding recruitment were compared with those following recruitment (negative controls) or return to racing (cases). Clinical aspects and outcome in interference-induced superficial digital flexor (SDF) tendonitis were compared with 77 horses with overstrain-induced SDF tendonitis.

RESULTS

In 89% of cases, there was SDF tendonitis and this was associated with a longer time to return to racing (6 months vs. 1 months; P<0.001). The presence of gait penalties (odds ratio (OR) 11.13; 95% CI 3.74, 41.64; P<0.001) and unshod hind feet (OR = 6.26, 95% CI 2.26, 19.62; P<0.001) increased risk of interference injuries. After recruitment/return to racing, horses with interference injuries participated in a lower number of races (24 starts per racing day, interquartile range [IQR] 20-32) compared with controls (49, IQR 43-55, P<0.0001). Interference-induced tendonitis cases (n = 58) had a shorter time to return to racing (245 ± 137 days) than overstrain-induced tendonitis cases (331 ± 118 days, P<0.001).

MAIN LIMITATIONS

Data were collected retrospectively; time of ultrasonographic assessment varied and health status of the racing controls is unknown.

CONCLUSIONS

SDF tendonitis is common with palmar forelimb interference injuries in Standardbreds and increases time to return to racing. Interference-induced SDF tendonitis has a better prognosis than overstrain-induced tendonitis.

Epidemiology of musculoskeletal injuries in a population of harness Standardbred racehorses in training

Background

There is a substantial paucity of studies concerning musculoskeletal injuries in harness Standardbred racehorses. Specifically, little is known about the epidemiology of exercise-related musculoskeletal injuries. Most studies on this subject involve Thoroughbred racehorses, whose biomechanics and racing speed differ from Standardbred, making comparisons difficult. Here, a population of Standardbred racehorses trained at the same racecourse was studied over four years and a classification system for exercise-related musculoskeletal injuries was designed. The incidence rates of musculoskeletal injuries causing horses’ withdrawal from training for 15 days or longer were investigated. A mixed-effects Poisson regression model was used to estimate musculoskeletal injury rates and to describe significance of selected risk factors for exercise-related injuries in this population.

Results

A total of 356 trotter racehorses from 10 different stables contributed 8961 months at risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Four-hundred-and-twenty-nine injuries were reported and classified into 16 categories, based on their aetiology and anatomical localisation. The overall exercise-related injury rate was 4.79 per 100 horse months. When considering risk factors one by one in separate univariable analyses, we obtained the following results: rates did not differ significantly between genders and classes of age, whereas one driver seemed to cause fewer injuries than the others. Racing speed and racing intensity, as well as recent medical history, seemed to be significant risk factors (p < 0.001), while being shod or unshod during racing was not. On the other hand, when pooling several risk factors in a multivariable approach, only racing intensity turned out to be significant (p < 0.001), since racing speed and the racing intensity were partially confounded, being strongly correlated to one another.

Conclusion

Characterizing epidemiology of exercise-related musculoskeletal injuries in trotter racehorses provides baseline incidence rate values. Incidence rates of stress fracture are lower in Standardbreds compared to Thoroughbreds, whereas the opposite is true for tendon and suspensory ligament injuries. In addition to identification of risk factors for musculoskeletal injuries among Standardbred racehorses, results suggest that racing intensity seems to be a protective predictor of risk and recent medical history could be used to identify horses at risk of injury.

Body composition in young Standardbreds in training: relationships to body condition score, physiological and locomotor variables during exercise

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY

Body composition is an essential factor in athletic performance of human sprinters and long distance runners. However, in horses, many questions remain concerning relationships between body composition and performance in the different equine activities.

OBJECTIVES

To determine relationships between body composition, body score, physiological and locomotor variables in a population of young Standardbreds in training.

METHODS

Twenty-four 2-year-old Standardbreds were studied, body condition on a scale 0-5 and bodyweight recorded, and height at withers measured. Percentage of fat (%F), fat mass (FM) and fat free mass (FFM) were estimated echographically. During a standardised exercise test on the track, velocity, heart rate, respiratory frequency and blood lactate concentrations were measured. V4 and V200 (velocity for a blood lactate concentration of 4 mmol/l and velocity of 200 beats/min) calculated. Basic gait variables were measured at 3 different speeds with an accelerometric device.

RESULTS

Body composition variables: %F and FM were significantly related to body condition score and physiological variables. Body score was highly correlated to %F (r = 0.64) and FM (r = 0.71). V4 was negatively correlated to %F (r = -0.59) and FM (r = -0.60), P<0.05. V200 was also negatively related to %F and FM, (r = -0.39 and r = -0.37, respectively, P<0.1). No relationships were found between body composition and gait characteristics.

CONCLUSIONS

Body composition was closely related to indirect measurements of aerobic capacity, which is a major factor of athletic performance in middle distance running horses.

POTENTIAL RELEVANCE

As in human athletes, trainers should take special note to evaluate optimal bodyweight and body composition of race horses to optimise performance.
