Abstract
The cationic herbicides paraquat, diquat and difenzoquat are largely used in different cultures worldwide. With this, there is an intrinsic risk of environmental contamination when these herbicides achieve natural waters. The goal of this work was to propose a novel and low-cost sorbent for the removal of the cited herbicides from aqueous medium. The proposed sorbent was prepared by loading polyurethane foam with sodium dodecylsulfate. The influence of several parameters (SDS concentration, HCl concentration and shaking time) on the loading process was investigated. The results obtained in this work demonstrated that all studied variables influenced the loading process, having significant effect on the extraction efficiency of the resulted PUF-SDS. At optimized conditions, the PUF was loaded by shaking 200mg of crushed foam with 200mL of a solution containing 5.0×10(-3)molL(-1) SDS and 0.25molL(-1) HCl, for 30min. The obtained PUF-SDS was efficient for removing the three herbicides from aqueous medium, achieving extraction percentages higher than 90%. The sorption process followed a pseudo second-order kinetics, which presented excellent predictive capacity of the amount of herbicide retained with time.

Abstract
The use of an appropriate sample handling technique is a must in an analysis of organic micropollutants in water. The efforts to use a solid phase for the recovery of analytes from a water matrix prior to their detection have a long history. Since the first experimental trials using activated carbon filters that were performed 50 years ago, solid-phase extraction (SPE) has become an established sample preparation technique. The initial experimental applications of SPE resulted in widespread use of this technique in current water analysis and also to adoption of SPE into standardized analytical methods. During the decades of its evolution, chromatographers became aware of the advantages of SPE and, despite many innovations that appeared in the last decade, new SPE developments are still expected in the future. A brief overview of 50 years of the history of the use of SPE in organic trace analysis of water is given in presented paper.

Abstract
A physical description of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) is given, both in terms of their characteristic nature in the atmosphere and the processes which control their deposition. The currently adopted methods used to measure the atmospheric concentrations of SVOCs have been summarised, along with their shortcomings. Techniques and associated problems have also been reviewed for measurements of atmospheric deposition. A summary has been given of the requirements necessary for a full assessment of atmospheric SVOCs and their deposition.

Abstract
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) initially associated with microparticulates are incorporated into marine diatom cells. The time course of transfer is rapid; equilibrium is attained within several hours. Assays with chlorophyll a fluorescence in vivo indicate that the transferred PCB's reach sites in the photosynthetic machinery that are sensitive to the effects of these compounds.

Abstract
Traces of volatile organic materials in water have been concentrated by gas phase stripping and adsorption onto a porous polymer. A simple all-glass sampling device is proposed which allows efficient concentration at elevated temperatures. Sample transfer from absorbent into a gas chromatographic column is effected by a simple one-step procedure involving heat desorption. The capacity of the absorbent has been determined for a number of model substances which are found in water. Under the sampling conditions used, compounds being less volatile than benzene are usually quantitatively retained, with some exceptions. Separations were effected with highly efficient glass capillary columns. Water samples, collected from a small number of locations, included both tap water and untreated waters. A number of volatiles have been determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in drinking water and in a river which flows through an industrialized area. The drinking water examined contains a large number of chlorinated and brominated compounds whereas the river water is largely free from this class of substances. Derivatives of camphor and terpenes have been identified in this particular river.

Abstract
The use of Tenax GC for the extraction of organic micro-pollutants such as pesticides and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons from water has been studied. In the absence of other contaminants and under conditions standardized at the time as optimal, the recovery of such substances is, on average, over 90%, both for the organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides and for polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. Research into the effectiveness of extraction with Tenax from natural waters and water artificially contaminated with surfactants, fats and oils etc., in the laboratory is now being carried out.
