Method Development for Flow Adsorption and Removal of Lead and Copper in Contaminated Water Using Electrospun Nanofibers of Chitosan Blend

Preparation and Characterization of Highly Porous Polyacrylonitrile Electrospun Nanofibers Using Lignin as Soft Template via Selective Chemical Dissolution Technique

In this study, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was mixed with a renewable polymer, lignin, to produce electrospun nanofibers by using an electrospinning technique. Lignin was utilized as a soft template that was removed from the nanofibers by using a selective dissolution technique to create porous PAN nanofibers. These nanofibers were characterized with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) to study their properties and morphology. The results showed that lignin can be homogeneously mixed into the PAN solution and successfully electrospun into nanofibers. FESEM results showed a strong relationship between the PAN: lignin ratio and the diameter of the electrospun fibers. Lignin was successfully removed from electrospun nanofibers by a selective chemical dissolution technique, which resulted in roughness and porousness on the surface of the nanofibers. Based on the BET result, the specific surface area of the PAN/lignin nanofibers was more than doubled following the removal of lignin compared to PAN nanofibers. The highest specific surface area of nanofibers after selective chemical dissolution was found at an 8:2 ratio of PAN/lignin, which was 32.42 m²g⁻¹ with an average pore diameter of 5.02 nm. The diameter of electrospun nanofibers was also slightly reduced after selective chemical dissolution. Porous PAN nanofibers can be seen as the precursors to the production of highly porous carbon nanofibers.

A review on the applications of electrospun chitosan nanofibers for the cancer treatment

In recent years, the incidence of cancer is increasing every day due to poor quality of life (industrialization of life). Therefore, the treatment of cancer has received much attention from therapists. So far, many anticancer drugs have been used to treat cancer patents. However, the direct use of the anticancer drugs has the adverse side effects for patents and several limitations to treat process. Natural chitosan nanofibers prepared by electrospinning method have unique properties such as high surface area, high porosity, suitable mechanical properties, nontoxicity, biocompatibility, biodegradability, biorenewable, low immunogenicity, better clinical functionality, analogue to extracellular model, and easy production in large scale. Therefore, this bio-polymer is a very suitable case to deliver of the anti-cancer drugs to treat cancer patents. In this review summarizes the electrospinning synthesis of chitosan and its therapeutic application for the various cancer treatment.

Electrospun and functionalized PVDF/PAN nanocatalyst-loaded composite for dechlorination and photodegradation of pesticides in contaminated water

A novel approach for the electrospinning and functionalization of nanocatalyst-loaded polyvinylidene fluoride/polyacrylonitrile (PVDF/PAN) composite grafted with acrylic acid (AA; which form polyacrylic acid (PAA) brush) and decorated with silver (Ag/PAN/PVDF-g-PAA-TiO₂/Fe-Pd) designed for the dechlorination and photodegradation of pesticides was carried out. PAN was used both as a nitrogen dopant as well as a co-polymer. Smooth nanofibers were obtained by electrospinning a solution of 12:2 wt.% PVDF/PAN blend using dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent. The nanofibers were grafted with AA by free-radical polymerization using 2,2'azobis(2-methylpropionitrile) (AIBN) as initiator. Both bimetallic iron-palladium (Fe-Pd) and titania (TiO₂) nanoparticles (NP) were anchored on the grafted nanofibers via the carboxylate groups by in situ and ex situ synthesis. The Fe-Pd and nitrogen-doped TiO₂ nanoparticles were subsequently used for dechlorination and oxidation of target pollutants (dieldrin, chlorpyrifos, diuron, and fipronil) to benign products. Structural and chemical characterizations of the composites were done using various techniques. These include surface area and porosity analyzer (ASAP) using the technique by Brunner Emmett Teller (BET), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) analyses were done. After dechlorination, the transformation products (TPs) for dieldrin, chlorpyrifos, diuron, and fipronil were obtained and identified using two-dimensional gas chromatography (time-of-flight) with a mass spectrometer detector (GCxGC-TOFMS). Analysis of total organic carbon (TOC) was carried out and used to extrapolate percentage mineralization. Experimental results showed that dechlorination efficiencies of 96, 93, 96, and 90 % for 1, 2, 2, and 3 h treatment period were respectively achieved for 5 ppm solutions of dieldrin, chlorpyrifos, diuron, and fipronil. The dechlorination of dieldrin, diuron, and fipronil follows first-order kinetics while that of chlorpyrifos followed pseudo-first order. Mineralization performance of 34 to 45 % were recorded when Fe-Pd was used, however upon electrospinning, doping, and grafting (Ag/PAN/PVDF-g-PAA-TiO₂/Fe-Pd composite); it significantly increased to 99.9999 %. This composite reveals great potential for dechlorination and mineralization of pesticides in contaminated water.

Optimization of the Preparation of Mercaptoacetyl Chitosan and its Flocculating Performance

The optimum preparation conditions of the macromolecule flocculant-mercapto-acetyl chitosan (MAC) using orthogonal experiment were investigated, and its performances were tested by using the wastewater containing turbidity and/or heavy mental ions such as copper, cadmium, mercury, nickel ions as the target in different pH value in detail. The experimental results show that: (1)The optimal preparation conditions of MAC are as follows:the mass ratio of m (chitosan):m (mercaptoacetic acid) is 1:1, pH value is 5.0, and the reaction time is 3.5 h. (2)The selectivity order of different heavy metal ions by MAC is Cd2+>Cu2+>Ni2+ for the same experimental conditions. (3)With the increasing in pH value the removal efficiency of Cu2+ by MAC was enhanced. (4) The removal efficiencies of heavy mental ions were greatly promoted by the cooperation effects for the water sample containing turbidity causing substances.
