Minireview: Silver-Doped Titanium Dioxide and Silver-Doped Zinc Oxide Photocatalysts

Innovative textiles treated with TiO2-AgNPs with succinic acid as a cross-linking agent for medical uses

Silver and titanium-silver nanoparticles have unique properties that make the textile industry progress through the high quality of textiles. Preparation of AgNPs and TiO2-Ag core-shell nanoparticles in different concentrations (0.01% and 0.1% OWF) and applying it to cotton fabrics (Giza 88 and Giza 94) by using succinic acid 5%/SHP as a cross-linking agent. Ultra-violet visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) are tools for AgNPs and TiO2-AgNPs characterization and the treated cotton. The resulting AgNPs and TiO2-AgNPs were added to cotton fabrics at different concentrations. The antimicrobial activities, UV protection, self-cleaning, and the treated fabrics' mechanical characteristics were investigated. Silver nanoparticles and titanium dioxide-silver nanoparticles core-shell were prepared to be used in the treatment of cotton fabrics to improve their UV protection properties, self-cleaning, elongation and strength, as well as the antimicrobial activities to use the produced textiles for medical and laboratory uses and to increase protection for medical workers taking into account the spread of infection. The results demonstrated that a suitable distribution of prepared AgNPs supported the spherical form. Additionally, AgNPs and TiO2-AgNPs have both achieved stability, with values of (- 20.8 mV and - 30 mV, respectively). The synthesized nanoparticles spread and penetrated textiles' surfaces with efficiency. The findings demonstrated the superior UV protection value (UPF 50+) and self-cleaning capabilities of AgNPs and TiO2-AgNPs. In the treatment with 0.01% AgNPs and TiO2-AgNPs, the tensile strength dropped, but the mechanical characteristics were enhanced by raising the concentration to 0.1%. The results of this investigation demonstrated that the cotton fabric treated with TiO2-AgNPs exhibited superior general characteristics when compared to the sample treated only with AgNPs.

Evaluation of the photocatalytic degradation mechanism of methylene blue using nascent and Ag+ ions-modified TiO2

In photocatalytic removal of organic pollutants, adsorption and degradation are two important processes that take place. Various instrumental techniques and trapping experiments have been used to identify the reactive species and the mechanism of photodegradation. The present work focuses on investigating the mechanism of photo-induced degradation from the comparative characterization of fresh and used samples, isotherm models, competitive adsorption, and desorption studies of pure and Ag+-modified TiO2 NPs. The comparative characterizations of fresh and used NPs were carried out with FT-IR, EDX, and XRF analyses after methylene blue (MB) degradation. The Ag+ doped TiO2 used in this study was fabricated using simple impregnation technique. The prepared NPs were characterized using techniques including XPS, XRD, SEM/EDX, XRF, UV-DRS, and pH point-zero charge analyses (pHPZC). The Ag+-modified TiO2 NPs showed improved efficiency compared to pure TiO2 NPs using normal compact fluorescent light (CFL). The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were applied to test the adsorption behavior on the surface photocatalysts. The investigational data finest fitted to the Langmuir isotherms model compared to Freundlich model, suggesting the homogeneous monolayer adsorption followed by degradations. The competitive removal of MB in the presence of a photo-generated electrons trapper (Cd2+) was enhanced almost 3-folds (115 mg/L) compared to the removal from a single MB solution (40 mg/L). The characterization of the used samples as well as adsorption in the dark and negligible desorption of used samples support the involvement of the proposed photo-induced degradation mechanism.

An efficient multi-functional ternary reusable nanocomposite based on chitosan@TiO2@Ag NP immobilized on cellulosic fiber as a support substrate for wastewater treatment

To effectively remove heavy metals, organic contaminants, and pathogenic bacteria from wastewater, an efficient multi-functional ternary nanocomposite based on chitosan (CS), titanium dioxide (TiO2 NP), and silver nanoparticles (Ag NP) was prepared. Different tools were used to confirm the successful synthesis of the CS/TiO2 NP/Ag NP nanocomposite. Then, the CS/TiO2 NP/Ag NPnanocomposite was immobilized on the cellulosic fiber as a support substrate for its easy removal and reuse. On a lab scale, CS/TiO2 NP/Ag NP nanocomposite@cellulosic fiber was used to remove Cu (II) ions, methyl orange (MO), and methylene blue (MB), as well as inhibit microbes. The results demonstrate that the greatest removal of Cu (II) ions was 95 % at a concentration of 50 mg/L, pH 5, a temperature of 25 °C, an agitation speed of 200 rpm with 1 g adsorbent dose, and a contact time of 150 min. The pseudo-second-order model explained the batch adsorption kinetics well, while the Langmuir model explained the adsorption isotherm well with an adsorption capacity of 7.71 mg/g. Adsorption thermodynamic parameters revealed that adsorption is a spontaneous, exothermic, increased randomness, and non-specific chemisorption approach. The photodegradation of MO and MB by CS/TiO2 NP/Ag NP nanocomposite@cellulosic fiber was investigated. The results reveal that at pH 3, the MO dye showed the highest photodegradation percentage (90 %), while the MB dye displayed the highest photodegradation percentage (94 %) at pH 11, after an irradiation time of 120 min under visible light. The rate constants for MO and MB were 0.01218 and 0.01412 min-1, respectively. The results antimicrobial activities showed that the CS/TiO2 NP/Ag NP nanocomposite@cellulosic fiber showed excellent antibacterial activity against S. aureus (95 ± 2 %) and E. coli (93 ± 3 %) as well as good antifungal activity against C. albicans (77 ± 2 %).

Cube-shaped Cobalt-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles with increased visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity achieved by green co-precipitation synthesis

From the perspective of environmental protection, the highly efficient degradation of antibiotics and organic dyes in wastewater needs to be tackled as soon as possible. In this study, an ecofriendly and green cube-shaped cobalt-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles (Co-ZnO NPs) photocatalyst using Pterocladia Capillacea (P. Capillacea) water extract loaded with 5, 10, and 15% cobalt ions were formed via co-precipitation process to degrade antibiotics. The prepared Co-ZnO NPs were tested as a photocatalyst for the photodegradation of ciprofloxacin (CIPF) in the presence of a visible LED-light source. Co-ZnO NPs have been obtained through the co-precipitation method in the presence of P. Capillacea extract as a green capping agent and reducing agent, for the first time. Several characterization techniques including FTIR, XRD, BET, XPS, TEM, EDX, SEM, TGA and DRS UV-Vis spectroscopy were applied to study the prepared Co-ZnO NPs. XRD results suggested that the average size of these NPs ranged between 42.82 and 46.02 nm with a hexagonal wurtzite structure. Tauc plot shows that the optical energy bandgap of ZnO NPs (3.19 eV) gradually decreases to 2.92 eV by Co doping. Examinations showed that 5% Co-ZnO NPs was the highest efficient catalyst for the CIPF photodegradation when compared with ZnO NPs and other 10 and 15% Co-ZnO NPs. A 10 mg/L solution of CIPF was photo-degraded (100%) within the first 15 min irradiation. The kinetics showed that the first-order model is suitable for displaying the rate of reaction and amount of CIPF elimination with R2 = 0.952. Moreover, central composite design optimization of the 5% Co-doped ZnO NPs was also investigated.

Emerging aspects of metal ions-doped zinc oxide photocatalysts in degradation of organic dyes and pharmaceutical pollutants - A review

In recent periods, a broad assortment of continual organic contaminants has been released into our natural water resources. Indeed, it is exceedingly poisonous and perilous to living things; thus, the elimination of these organic pollutants before release into the water bodies is vital. A variety of techniques have been utilized to remove these organic pollutants with advanced oxidation photocatalytic methods with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles being commonly used as a capable catalyst for contaminated water treatment. Nevertheless, its broad energy gap, which can be only stimulated under an ultraviolet (UV) light source, and high recombination pairs of electrons and holes limit their photocatalytic behaviors. However, numerous methods have been suggested to decrease its energy gap for visible regions. Including, the doping ZnO with metal ions (dopant) can be considered as an effectual route not only the reason for a movement of the absorption edges toward the higher (visible light) region but also to lower the electron-hole pair (e--h+) recombination. This review concentrated on the impact of dissimilar types of metal ions (dopants) on the advancement in the degradation performance of ZnO. So, this work demonstrates a vital review of contemporary attainments in the alteration of ZnO nanoparticles for organic pollutants eliminations. Besides, the effect of doping ions including transition metals, rare earth metals, and metal ions (substitutional and interstitial) concerning numerous types of altered ZnO are summarized. The photodegradation mechanisms for pristine and metal-modified ZnO nanoparticles are also conferred.

Study on Photocatalytic Performance of Ag/TiO2 Modified Cement Mortar

In this paper, Ag-TiO₂ photocatalysts with different Ag contents (1 mol%–5 mol%) were prepared and applied to cement mortar. The photocatalytic performance of Ag-TiO₂ and photocatalytic cement mortar under UV light and simulated solar light was evaluated. The results showed that Ag loading on the surface of TiO₂ could reduce its band gap width and increase its absorbance in the visible region, and 2% Ag-TiO₂ had the highest photocatalytic activity under UV light, the degradation rate of methyl orange (MO) was 95.5% at 30 min, and the first-order reaction constant k was 0.0980 min⁻¹, which was 61.7% higher than that of TiO₂, and 5% Ag-TiO₂ had the highest photocatalytic activity under solar light, the degradation rate of methylene blue (MB) was 69.8% at 40 min, and the first-order reaction constant k was 0.0294 min⁻¹, which was 90.9% higher than that of TiO₂. The photocatalytic mortar prepared by the spraying method has high photocatalytic performance, The MO degradation rate of sample S2 under UV light was 87.5% after 120 min, MB degradation rate of sample S5 under solar light was 75.4% after 120 min. The photocatalytic reaction conforms to the zero-order reaction kinetics, which was 1.5 times–3.3 times higher than that of the mixed samples and has no effect on the mechanical properties of mortar.

Recent progress on Ag/TiO2 photocatalysts: photocatalytic and bactericidal behaviors

For many decades, titanium dioxide (TiO₂) semiconductor has been extensively applied in several environmental applications due to its higher photocatalytic performances toward different organic pollutants, pharmaceutical compounds, and bacteria. However, its shortfall response to visible light, and the expeditious recombination rate of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs, hampers its utilization. Doping TiO₂ semiconductor with silver nanoparticles is a sound strategy to (1) extend its photocatalytic activity to visible light, (2) prevent the electron/holes pairs recombination due to the formation of the Schottky barrier at the interfaces with TiO₂ that act as an electron-trapping center, and (3) enhance its bactericide performances. This review focuses on the recent progress on silver-doped titanium dioxide (Ag/TiO₂)-based photocatalysts. It addresses a wide range of Ag/TiO₂ synthesis techniques, their physicochemical properties and discusses thoroughly the important role of silver (Ag) nanoparticles in enhancing the removal capacity and antibacterial performances of the Ag/TiO₂ photocatalysts.

Microfiltration Membranes Modified with Composition of Titanium Oxide and Silver Oxide by Magnetron Sputtering

In this work, the authors present the possibility of modification of polymer membranes by TiO₂ + AgO coating created by the magnetron sputtering method. The two-component TiO₂ + AgO coating can improve and shape new functional properties such as bactericidal and photocatalytic properties. The influence of magnetron power changes on the structure of the membrane was investigated as well. The structure and elemental composition of TiO₂ + AgO coatings were analyzed using SEM and EDS technique. All deposited coatings caused a total inhibition of the growth of two investigated colonies of Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis on the surface. The photocatalytic properties for membranes covered with oxide coatings were tested under UV irradiation and visible light. The filtration result show that polymer membranes covered with two-component TiO₂ + AgO coatings have a permeate flux similar to the non-coated membranes.

Green synthesis of zinc ferrite nanoparticles for photocatalysis of methylene blue

In this study, zinc ferrite nanoparticles (ZF-NPs) were synthesized using aqueous seed extract of Piper nigrum as a bio-reducing and stabilizing agent. FTIR, SEM, FE-SEM, XRD, and TGA have been used for characterizing ZF-NPs. The results showed that Piper nigrum stabilized ZF-NPs have high purity and size range of 60-80 nm. The performance of the ZF-NPs has been investigated by photocatalytic reduction of methylene blue (MB) in the presence of sunlight. The factors responsible for affecting the degradation values of the reaction were also explored for developing a better understanding of the phenomenon.

Critical review on the chemical reduction of nitroaniline

Conversion of nitroaniline (NA), a highly toxic pollutant that has been released into aquatic systems due to unmanaged industrial development in recent years, into the less harmful or a useful counterpart is the need of the hour. Various methods for its conversion and removal have been explored. Owing to its nominal features of advanced effectiveness, the chemical reduction of 4-NA using various different nanocatalytic systems is one such approach that has attracted tremendous interest over the past few years. The academic literature has been confined to case studies involving silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanoparticles, as these are the two most widely used materials for the synthesis of nanocatalytic assemblies. Focus has also been given to sodium borohydride (NaBH₄), which is used as a reductant during the chemical reduction of NA. This systematic review summarizes the fundamentals associated with the catalytic degradation of 4-NA, and presents a comprehensive and critical study of the latest modifications used in the synthesis of these catalytic systems. In addition, the kinetics, mechanisms, thermodynamics, as well as the future directions required for understanding this model reaction, have been provided in this particular study.
