Evaluation of Potential Exposure to Metals in Laundered Shop Towels

We reported in 2003 that exposure to metals on laundered shop towels (LSTs) could exceed toxicity criteria. New data from LSTs used by workers in North America document the continued presence of metals in freshly laundered towels. We assessed potential exposure to metals based on concentrations of metals on the LSTs, estimates of LST usage by employees, and the transfer of metals from LST-to-hand, hand-to-mouth, and LST-to-lip, under average- or high-exposure scenarios. Exposure estimates were compared to toxicity criteria. Under an average-exposure scenario (excluding metals' data outliers), exceedances of the California Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry toxicity criteria may occur for aluminum, cadmium, cobalt, copper, iron, and lead. Calculated intakes for these metals were up to more than 400-fold higher (lead) than their respective toxicity criterion. For the high-exposure scenario, additional exceedances may occur, and high-exposure intakes were up to 1,170-fold higher (lead) than their respective toxicity criterion. A sensitivity analysis indicated that alternate plausible assumptions could increase or decrease the magnitude of exceedances, but were unlikely to eliminate certain exceedances, particularly for lead.

The health impacts of semiconductor production: an epidemiologic review

BACKGROUND

Despite concerns over the harmful health effects of semiconductor production, epidemiological studies have shown mixed results.

OBJECTIVES

We aim to critically appraise epidemiologic studies to date, and to suggest future research and actions to protect workers in semiconductor industry.

METHODS

Epidemiologic studies were identified through electronic database searches, review of reference lists of relevant published works, and expert consultations, and were narratively reviewed.

RESULTS

Most evidence suggests reproductive risks from fabrication jobs, including spontaneous abortion (SAB), congenital malformation, and reduced fertility. Although chemicals have been suspected as causal agents, knowledge of the likely contribution(s) from specific exposures is still limited. Evidence of cancer risk seems to be equivocal. However, the available studies had serious limitations including healthy worker effects (HWEs), information bias, and insufficient power, all of which are associated with underestimation. Nevertheless, excess risks for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), leukemia, brain tumor, and breast cancer were observed.

CONCLUSIONS

Monitoring and innovative research based on international collaboration with a focus on sentinel events are required.

How important is inadvertent ingestion of hazardous substances at work?

Much is known about human exposure to workplace hazardous substances by inhalation and from skin contact, but there has been little systematic research into ingestion of hazardous substances used at work. This review attempts to identify whether inadvertent ingestion of hazardous substances is an important route of exposure in the workplace and examines possible methods that could be used to quantify ingestion exposure. A number of papers highlight jobs and substances where inadvertent ingestion may be important, typically through case reports or from a theoretical analysis. These scenarios involve exposure to some metals or metal compounds, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, some infectious agents, unsealed radioactive sources and some high molecular weight allergens. In total we estimate that about 4.5 million workers in the UK could have some regular non-trivial intake of hazardous substances by inadvertent ingestion. A conceptual analysis of inadvertent ingestion exposure highlights the role of hand-to-mouth and object-to-mouth events as the primary exposure processes. Two exposure 'compartments' are defined: the peri-oral area (i.e. the area of skin around the outside of the mouth) and the oral cavity. Several options are highlighted for exposure-related measurements, including peri-oral wipes, saliva samples, mouth-rinse samples, hand-wipes and under-nail scrapings. Further research is necessary to define which measurements may be most informative. Human behaviour has a key role in determining inadvertent ingestion exposure. For example, some people are habitual nail biters or repeatedly touch their mouth, both of which will increase the chance of ingesting contaminants on their hands. The frequency that people touch their face is dependant on the circumstances of their work and probably the degree of psychological stress they are under. A proper understanding of the importance of these factors will help in designing interventions to reduce the risks from ingesting hazardous substances at work. When making inhalation or dermal exposure measurements we recommend that details of personal behaviours should be recorded so that some estimate of ingestion risks can be inferred. It is possible that inadvertent ingestion of hazardous substances at work may become more important as employers put more emphasis on controlling inhalation and dermal exposures. Further research is necessary to ensure that risk reduction strategies for inadvertent ingestion of hazardous substances are appropriate and effective.

Effects of arsenic exposure among semiconductor workers: a cautionary note on urinary 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine

Arsenic is a notorious environmental toxicant and was found to cause oxidative stress in cultured cells and animals. However, little work has been done in human studies, especially for the population occupationally exposed to arsenic. In order to investigate the effect of occupational exposure to arsenic in oxidative stress, we measured urinary 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodGuo) from 90 semiconductor workers including 50 exposed and 40 nonexposed subjects. A highly sensitive and specific isotope dilution LC-MS/MS method was used for quantification of 8-oxodGuo. The levels of inorganic arsenic (iAs3+, iAs5+), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) in urine were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography-flow injection atomic absorption spectrometry (HPLC-FIAAS). Results showed that the mean urinary concentrations of total arsenic and 8-oxodGuo were significantly higher for exposed workers compared with the nonexposed workers. In addition, elevated urinary 8-oxodGuo concentrations of exposed workers were correlated with urinary levels of MMA (r = 0.44, P < 0.005) and the extent of primary methylation (the ratio of MMA to inorganic arsenic) (r = 0.40, P < 0.005). These findings suggested that occupational exposure to arsenic could result in the induction of oxidative stress. The presence and/or formation of MMA could play an important role in arsenic-involved injuries.

Enhanced performance of a filter–sensor system

In this paper are addressed two important, but seemingly unrelated issues: long term performance of a gas sensing array and performance of an air purification unit. It is shown that when considered together, the system can be regarded as a "smart filter". The enhancement is achieved by periodic differential sampling and measurement of the "upstream" and "downstream" gases of a filter. The correctly functioning filter supplies the "zero gas" from the downstream for the continuous sensor baseline correction. A key element in this scheme is the synthetic jet that delivers well-defined pulses of the two gases. The deterioration of the performance of the "smart filter" can be diagnosed from the response pattern of the sensor. The approach has been demonstrated on removal/sensing of ammonia gas from air.

Monitoring of arsenic exposure with speciated urinary inorganic arsenic metabolites for ion implanter maintenance engineers

For wafer fabrication in the semiconductor industry, maintenance engineers are potentially exposed to hazards during their work of disassembling machine components for cleanup. One special concern is the presence of arsenic or arsenic compounds in the working environment. This study analyzed speciated urinary inorganic arsenic metabolites of the maintenance engineers using high-performance liquid chromatography-hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry to study the potential arsenic exposure during their maintenance work. In total, from six wafer fabrication facilities, 30 maintenance engineers were recruited as the exposed group and another 12 office-based engineers served as the control group. First morning-voided urine samples of each study subject were collected for 7 consecutive days. The levels of total urinary inorganic arsenic metabolites for the exposed group were 1.7+/-1.4, 1.4+/-1.1, 6.2+/-6.7, 20.2+/-14.1, and 29.5+/-17.2 micro g/L for As3+, As5+, monomethylarsonic acid, dimethylarsinic acid, and total inorganic arsenic, respectively. Both the concentration of monomethylarsonic acid and its percentage in total urinary inorganic arsenic metabolites showed significantly ascending trends for the control group, for the engineers without preventative maintenance work prior to their urine sampling, and for the engineers with such work prior to their urine sampling (P<0.05 and P<0.0005, respectively). The data also suggested that, at low-level occupational arsenic exposure, the concentration of total urinary inorganic arsenic metabolites might be misleading due to the confounding effect resulting from intake of seafood, such as arsenosuger. Nevertheless, monitoring of urinary arsenic species by using the percentage change of monomethylarsonic acid in total urinary inorganic arsenic metabolites as an indicator for the verification of arsenic exposure is helpful and appropriate in such cases.
