Growth prediction of young chicks: do equal deficiencies of different essential amino acids produce equal growth responses?

Influence of dietary amino acid reductions and Eimeria acervulina infection on growth performance and intestinal cytokine responses of broilers fed low crude protein diets

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of Eimeria acervulina infection on growth performance, plasma carotenoids, and intestinal cytokine responses of broilers fed low crude protein (LCP) diets with reduced concentrations of selected amino acids (AA). Experiment 1 was conducted to validate a dietary formulation approach in which broilers were fed 1 of 5 diets including a 19.0% CP corn-soybean meal based (CSBM) diet, a LCP control diet (16.7% CP) that matched the AA profile of the CSBM diet, and 3 LCP diets with 30% reductions in standardized ileal digestible concentrations of TSAA, Lys, or Thr from 14 to 23 d post-hatch. Body weight gain and G:F were greatest (P < 0.05) and similar for broilers fed the CSBM and LCP control diets, whereas reductions in Thr, TSAA, and Lys each decreased (P < 0.05) G:F of broilers. In Experiment 2, birds were allotted to 18 treatment groups in a factorial arrangement of 9 dietary treatments × 2 infection states. Dietary treatments included a LCP control diet similar to that fed in Experiment 1 and 8 LCP diets with 40% individual reductions in TSAA, Lys, Thr, Val, Ile, Arg, Phe + Tyr, or Gly + Ser. Broilers received experimental diets from 10 d to 28 d post-hatch and were inoculated with 0 or 4.0 × 10⁵ sporulated E. acervulina oocysts at 15 d. Decreased (P < 0.05) growth performance (10 to 28 d) of broilers was observed with each AA reduction, except Phe + Tyr, compared with birds fed the LCP control diet. Body weight gain and G:F were lowest (P < 0.05) for birds fed diets reduced in Lys or Val. Eimeria acervulina decreased growth performance and plasma carotenoids of broilers, but effects varied among dietary treatment groups as indicated by diet × infection interactions (P < 0.05). Dietary AA reductions did not alter (P > 0.05) the increase in intestinal gene expression of interferon-γ, interleukin-1β, or interleukin-10 observed in E. acervulina-infected birds.

Effects of starter diet supplementation with arginine on broiler production performance and on small intestine morphometry

The effects of starter diet (days 1 to 21) supplemented with arginine (Arg) on the production performance and duodenum and jejunum mucosa morphometry of broilers were studied. Male Cobb broiler chickens (990) were randomly assigned to one of five treatments in a complete random design. Measurements of 33 chicks per treatment were made in six repetitions. The treatments consisted of a basal diet with 1.390% digestible Arg (no supplementation) and four dietary levels (1.490%, 1.590%, 1.690%, and 1.790%), providing a relationship with lysine of 1.103; 1.183; 1.262; 1.341 and 1.421%, respectively. From the age of 22 days on, all birds received conventional grower diet. The data were submitted to regression analysis by polynomial decomposition of the degrees of freedom in relation to the levels of Arg. The Arg supplementation increased (P<0.05) the live weight and the feed conversion ratio without increasing the feed intake of the birds. However, no effect was observed (P>0.05) in the growth phase (days 22 to 42) in the absence of the Arg supplementation. The supplementation of Arg over of NRC recommendation during the starter phase may be necessary for the expression of the maximal weight gain potential in birds. No effect (P<0.05) of Arg dietary supplementation was observed either on small intestine weight and length at any age. However, the duodenum villus:crypt ratio increased and the crypt depth decreased in the first week in response to increasing dietary Arg. It is concluded that broiler Arg dietary supplementation in the starter diet improved production performance and small intestine morphometry, especially in the first week.

[Methodical investigations on the metabolism oriented determination of methionine requirement of broiler chickens. 3. Degradation of 14C-(CH3)- and 35S-methionine after feeding of synthetic diets]

In a chicken experiment was investigated, whether the kind of applied isotope and labelling site influence the results of the metabolism oriented estimation of the methionine requirement. Furthermore it was studied, if this method can give additional informations to weight gain and N-retention data concerning methionine requirement. 48 male broiler chickens received synthetic diets with a complete amino acid mixture from day 7 posthatching. The methionine content of the 8 experimental diets varied from 2.25 to 7.5 g methionine/kg DM (1.17 to 3.87 g/16 g N). The low weight gain (13 to 22 g/d) and N-retention (0.55 to 0.87 g/d; from day 13 to 17 posthatching) was due to the inferior intake of the synthetic diets. Methionine supplementation increased weight gain and N-retention only up to 3 g methionine/kg DM. The metabolic methionine requirement was measured after i.v. injection of 14C-(CH3)- and 35S-methionine by 14CO2-excretion with breath and 35S-excretion with excrements. Both parameters gave similar results and showed an increased methionine degradation at methionine contents exceeding 4.5 g methionine/kg DM. Because there was no increase in methionine degradation up to 4.5 g/kg DM, an increased reutilization of methionine within the range between 3 and 4.5 g methionine/kg DM was supposed, which may act as a spare-mechanism. For practical feeding applications, also in case of low feed intake, a minimal methionine content of 4.5 g/kg DM is recommended.
