Abstract
A photocatalytic thiol-ene aqueous emulsion polymerization under visible-light is described to prepare linear semicrystalline latexes using 2,2'-dimercaptodiethyl sulfide as dithiol and various dienes. The procedure involves low irradiance (3 mW cm-2 ), LED irradiation source, eosin-Y disodium as organocatalyst, low catalyst loading (<0.05% mol), and short reaction time scales (<1 h). The resulting latexes have molecular weights of about 10 kg mol-1 , average diameters of 100 nm, and a linear structure consisting only of thioether repeating units. Electron-transfer reaction from a thiol to the triplet excited state of the photocatalyst is suggested as the primary step of the mechanism (type I), whereas oxidation by singlet oxygen generated by energy transfer has a negligible effect (type II). Only polymers prepared with aliphatic dienes such as diallyl adipate or di(ethylene glycol) divinyl ether exhibit a high crystallization tendency as revealed by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Ordering and crystallization are driven by molecular packing of poly(thioether) chains combining structural regularity, compactness, and flexibility.

Abstract
As an example of molecular design of new polymers, structures and properties of poly(ethylene thionoterephthalate) (PET[S2]) and the related polymers have been predicted from calculations of ab initio molecular orbital (MO) theory, rotational isomeric state (RIS) scheme, and periodic density functional theory (DFT). The MO calculations were confirmed by NMR experiments and introduced to the RIS scheme for PET[S2] to yield its configurational properties, which are compared herein with those of analogous polyester, polythioester, and polydithioester. Configurational properties of randomly thiono-substituted poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), PET[S z O1-z ], were also evaluated as a function of sulfidity (z). On the assumption that the crystal of PET[S2] can be expressed as an isomorphic replacement of the PET crystal, the crystal structure was optimized by a periodic DFT simulation and its Young's moduli in the a-, b-, and c-axis directions were, respectively, evaluated to be Ea = 0.94(7.20) GPa, E b = 19.58(22.26) GPa, and E c = 142.1(182.4) GPa, where the parenthetic values are those of the PET crystal. There is a possibility that properties of PET[S z O1-z ] will be controlled between those of PET and PET[S2] by adjusting the sulfidity. The potential practical applications of the polythionoesters are also discussed herein. By purely theoretical computations, the structures and properties of the not-yet synthesized polymers were predicted quantitatively; that is, the theoretical molecular design of new polymers has been achieved.

Abstract
With proper control over copolymer design and solvation conditions, self-assembled materials display impressive morphological variety that encompasses nanoscale colloids as well as bulk three-dimensional architectures. Here we take advantage of both hydrophobicity and crystallinity to mediate supramolecular self-assembly of spherical micellar, linear fibrillar, or hydrogel structures by a family of highly asymmetric poly(ethylene glycol)-b-oligo(ethylene sulfide) (PEG-OES) copolymers. Assembly structural polymorphism was achieved with modification of PEG-OES topology (linear versus multiarm) and with precise, monomer-by-monomer control of OES length. Notably, all three morphologies were accessed utilizing OES oligomers with degrees of polymerization as short as three. These exceptionally small assembly forming blocks represent the first application of ethylene sulfide oligomers in supramolecular materials. While the assemblies demonstrated robust aqueous stability over time, oxidation by hydrogen peroxide progressively converted ethylene sulfide residues to increasingly hydrophilic and amorphous sulfoxides and sulfones, causing morphological changes and permanent disassembly. We utilized complementary microscopic and spectroscopic techniques to confirm this chemical stimulus-responsive behavior in self-assembled PEG-OES colloidal dispersions and physical gels. In addition to inherent stimulus-responsive behavior, fibrillar assemblies demonstrated biologically relevant molecular delivery, as confirmed by the dose-dependent activation of murine bone marrow-derived dendritic cells following fibril-mediated delivery of the immunological adjuvant monophosphoryl lipid A. In physical gels composed of either linear or multiarm PEG-OES precursors, rheologic analysis also identified mechanical stimulus-responsive shear thinning behavior. Thanks to the facile preparation, user-defined morphology, aqueous stability, carrier functionality, and stimuli-responsive behaviors of PEG-OES supramolecular assemblies, our findings support a future role for these materials as injectable or implantable biomaterials.

Abstract
In the crystal structure, the title compound, C16H14S4, is located on an inversion center and exhibits a gauche+–trans–gauche− conformation in the S—CH2—CH2—S bond sequence. The S—C=S plane makes a dihedral angle of 30.63 (17)° with the phenyl ring. An intermolecular C—H⋯π interaction is observed.

Abstract
Conformational characteristics, solution (melt) properties, and thermal properties of polyselenoethers [-(CH2)ySe-]x ( y=1, 2, and 3) have been revealed by the rotational isomeric state analysis of ab initio molecular orbital calculations and (1)H and (13)C NMR experiments for monomeric model compounds and compared with those of typical polyethers and polysulfides. The comparative results are summarized here as correlations in conformation among model compounds and unperturbed and crystalline states of the polymers, and thermal properties of the polymer crystals are discussed in terms of intramolecular and intermolecular interactions. By ab initio molecular orbital calculations under periodic boundary conditions, helical structures of poly(methylene oxide), poly(methylene sulfide), and poly(methylene selenide), and the crystal structure of poly(ethylene selenide) have been optimized, and their electronic structures have been predicted. A systematic methodology to predict and characterize up to higher-order structures and various physical properties of polymers incorporated in different phases has been attempted to be developed.
