Abstract
This article reports a rare case of Brain Mucormycosis in a 12 year-old girl who presented with relapse Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). On the 12th day of chemotherapy, although there was no CNS symptoms, the second Lumbar Puncture (LP) revealedmthe CNS relapse which developed to Into brain abscess presenting with right side hemiparesis. The brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the brain biopsy revealed small, multifocal necrosis and acute inflammation with septal fungal hyphae branching, which was proven to be caued by Mucormycosis according to Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The patient responded to treatment with intravenous liposomal Amohotericin B and Caspofungin after two months, suggesting that Brain Mucormycosis in ALL cases can be managed with sequential therapy by antifungals.

Abstract
Pulmonary mucormycosis is a life-threatening infection caused by a fungus that is part of the Mucorales family. Diabetes ketoacidosis has been classically described as the main risk factor for the disease. Tracheobronchial mucormycosis is an infrequent form of pulmonary mucormycosis that presents as a tracheobronchial tumor obstructing the airway. Few cases have been reported in the literature. We present a case of pulmonary mucormycosis that presented initially as a collapsed right upper lung, mimicking a tracheobronchial tumor. Early detection and treatment are key to avoid fatal outcomes.

Abstract
The current study reports the case of a 15-year-old male who presented to The First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University (Suzhou, Jiangsu, China) with a 3-day history of anergy and epistaxis. The patient was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia according to the results of a bone marrow examination and received chemotherapy. During the agranulocytosis period, the patient developed pneumonia of the right upper lung (RUL). Once complete remission was achieved, the patient underwent a lobectomy of the RUL, together with amphotericin B therapy, following the confirmation of pulmonary mucormycosis by the histopathological results. The patient experienced 12 months of uneventful follow-up post-surgery.

Abstract
Mucormycosis is a fungal infection caused by a rare pathogen most commonly affecting immunocompromised hosts. Successful treatment of pulmonary mucormycosis requires rapid diagnosis, reversal of predisposing factors, aggressive surgical excision, and antifungal therapy. We present a case of pulmonary mucormycosis affecting a young neutropenic male requiring a pneumonectomy.

Abstract
Pulmonary zygomycosis, also referred to as mucormycosis, is a fungal infection of lungs caused by fungi of the order Mucorales in the class of Zygomycetes. It is usually associated with high morbidity and mortality. Here, we report the case of a 14-year-old girl with pediatric acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) on antifungal prophylaxis with posaconazole, who developed pulmonary Lichtheimia corymbifera (formerly Absidia corymbifera) zygomycosis. She was successfully treated by means of liposomal amphotericin B (L-AmB) and surgery. To our knowledge, this is the first published report on pediatric APL and pulmonary zygomycosis in the English language literature. At present, the patient is in complete remission of her APL and without any signs of recurrence of zygomycosis. This report suggests that efficient diagnostics, increased physician awareness, and reliance on adjunctive surgical therapy can result in a favorable outcome of pulmonary zygomycosis in immunocompromised children with hematological malignancies.

Abstract
Rhizopus, Mucor, and Lichtheimia (formerly Absidia) species are the most common members of the order Mucorales that cause mucormycosis, accounting for 70 to 80% of all cases. In contrast, Cunninghamella, Apophysomyces, Saksenaea, Rhizomucor, Cokeromyces, Actinomucor, and Syncephalastrum species individually are responsible for fewer than 1 to 5% of reported cases of mucormycosis. In this review, we provide an overview of the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis of, treatment of, and prognosis for unusual Mucormycetes infections (non-Rhizopus, -Mucor, and -Lichtheimia species). The infections caused by these less frequent members of the order Mucorales frequently differ in their epidemiology, geographic distribution, and disease manifestations. Cunninghamella bertholletiae and Rhizomucor pusillus affect primarily immunocompromised hosts, mostly resulting from spore inhalation, causing pulmonary and disseminated infections with high mortality rates. R. pusillus infections are nosocomial or health care related in a large proportion of cases. While Apophysomyces elegans and Saksenaea vasiformis are occasionally responsible for infections in immunocompromised individuals, most cases are encountered in immunocompetent individuals as a result of trauma, leading to soft tissue infections with relatively low mortality rates. Increased knowledge of the epidemiology and clinical presentations of these unusual Mucormycetes infections may improve early diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Zygomycosis is usually an invasive mycotic disease caused by fungi in the class Zygomycetes. It often occurs in immunocompromised patients, but sporadic cases without apparent immune impairment have been described. This report presents the first case of pleural zygomycosis caused by Rhizomucor pusillus, an uncommon pathogen of human infection. A 19-year-old man was found to have pleuritis several days after a drainage catheter was implanted to cure a pneumothorax caused by a ruptured bulla. Local pneumonectomy to resect the ruptured bulla and vacuuming of the pleural fluid was performed. Rhizomucor pusillus was cultured from the pleural fluid and irregular broad sparsely septate hyphae, consistent with zygomycetes, were histologically detected in the thickened pleura of the resected bulla. The catheter was suspected of having been contaminated with the fungus, but no evidence could be obtained. His fungal pleuritis subsided without any antifungal medical therapy and his immunocompetence seemed to contribute to limiting the infection.

Abstract
Sinus-orbital zygomycosis caused by Rhizomucor pusillus in a patient with acute myelogenous leukemia is described. Identification was achieved by sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of the rRNA gene and by expression of zygospores in mating. This report highlights the value of ITS sequencing as a diagnostic tool for the identification of R. pusillus and expands the understanding of infection types caused by this zygomycete.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Zygomycosis is an increasingly emerging life-threatening infection. There is no single comprehensive literature review that describes the epidemiology and outcome of this disease. METHODS We reviewed reports of zygomycosis in the English-language literature since 1885 and analyzed 929 eligible cases. We included in the database only those cases for which the underlying condition, the pattern of infection, the surgical and antifungal treatments, and survival were described. RESULTS The mean age of patients was 38.8 years; 65% were male. The prevalence and overall mortality were 36% and 44%, respectively, for diabetes; 19% and 35%, respectively, for no underlying condition; and 17% and 66%, respectively, for malignancy. The most common types of infection were sinus (39%), pulmonary (24%), and cutaneous (19%). Dissemination developed in 23% of cases. Mortality varied with the site of infection: 96% of patients with disseminated disease died, 85% with gastrointestinal infection died, and 76% with pulmonary infection died. The majority of patients with malignancy (92 [60%] of 154) had pulmonary disease, whereas the majority of patients with diabetes (222 [66%] of 337) had sinus disease. Rhinocerebral disease was seen more frequently in patients with diabetes (145 [33%] of 337), compared with patients with malignancy (6 [4%] of 154). Hematogenous dissemination to skin was rare; however, 78 (44%) of 176 cutaneous infections were complicated by deep extension or dissemination. Survival was 3% (8 of 241 patients) for cases that were not treated, 61% (324 of 532) for cases treated with amphotericin B deoxycholate, 57% (51 of 90) for cases treated with surgery alone, and 70% (328 of 470) for cases treated with antifungal therapy and surgery. By multivariate analysis, infection due to Cunninghamella species and disseminated disease were independently associated with increased rates of death (odds ratios, 2.78 and 11.2, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Outcome from zygomycosis varies as a function of the underlying condition, site of infection, and use of antifungal therapy.

Abstract
Systemic antifungal chemotherapy is enjoying its most dynamic era. More antifungal agents are under development than ever before, including agents in entirely new classes. Major goals of current investigations are to identify compounds with a wide spectrum of activity, minimal toxicity and a high degree of target specificity. The antifungal drugs in development include new azoles {voriconazole, posaconazole (formerly SCH-56592), ravuconazole (formerly BMS-207147)}, lipid formulations of amphotericin B, a lipid formulation of nystatin, echinocandins {anidulafungin (formerly, LY-303366, VER-002), caspofungin (formerly MK-991), micafungin (formerly FK-463)}, antifungal peptides other than echinocandins, and sordarin derivatives. This discussion reviews the currently available antifungal agents and summarises the developmental issues that surround these new systemic antifungal drugs.

Abstract
The opportunistic pathogens Rhizomucor pusillus and Rhizomucor miehei may be agents of frequently fatal mycotic diseases. In the present study, the susceptibilities of 27 clinical and environmental isolates of R. miehei and R. pusillus to lovastatin under different culturing conditions were investigated. Most of the R. miehei strains grew at lovastatin concentrations as high as 64 to 128 microg/ml. In contrast, the inhibitory effect of lovastatin on all of the R. pusillus strains was evident at lovastatin concentrations as low as 1 to 2 microg/ml. A simple and reliable method for species-level differentiation, based on the significantly higher sensitivity of R. pusillus to lovastatin than that of R. miehei, was elaborated. According this, on malt extract agar containing 6 mug of lovastatin/ml, R. pusillus is not able to produce colonies, while R. miehei will form compact colonies.

Abstract
A 42-year-old man, with a history of immunoglobulin A nephropathy, underwent a living-related kidney transplant. Allograft function progressively deteriorated secondary to chronic rejection and recurrence of IgA nephropathy, and he returned to peritoneal dialysis after 5 years of the transplant. Fifteen months after the discontinuation of immunosuppressive therapy, Eschericia coli peritonitis developed, which was treated with ceftazidime intraperitoneally; he received fluconazole as prophylactic antifungal therapy during this period. After completing his course of treatment, abdominal pain occurred with an increased peritoneal fluid white blood cell count. Peritoneal fluid cultures were negative. He received broad-spectrum antibiotics and fluconazole with no appreciable response. After removal of the Tenckoff catheter, peritoneal fluid cultures grew a zygomycete. The patient was treated with liposomal amphotericin B (AmBisome) intravenously for 6 weeks. He had episodes of recurrent intraabdominal abscesses requiring surgical drainage and antibiotics. A second course of liposomal amphotericin B was administered for histopathologic evidence of filamentous fungal recurrence. After 5 months, the patient remains well without any evidence of infection.
