Gendered Racial Microaggressions and Black Women's Sleep Health

Gendered racial microaggressions reflect historical and contemporary gendered racism that Black women encounter. Although gendered racial microaggressions are related to psychological outcomes, it is unclear if such experiences are related to sleep health. Moreover, the health effects of gendered racial microaggressions dimensions are rarely investigated. Using a cohort of Black women (N = 400), this study employs an intracategorical intersectional approach to (1) investigate the association between gendered racial microaggressions and sleep health, (2) assess whether gendered racial microaggressions dimensions are related to sleep health, and (3) examine whether the gendered racial microaggressions-sleep health association persists after accounting for depressive symptoms and worry. Gendered racial microaggressions were associated with poor sleep quality overall and four specific domains: subjective sleep quality, latency, disturbance, and daytime sleepiness. Two gendered racial microaggressions dimensions were especially detrimental for sleep: assumptions of beauty/sexual objectification and feeling silenced and marginalized. After accounting for mental health, the effect of gendered racial microaggressions on sleep was reduced by 47 percent. Future research implications are discussed.

Latent Class Analysis of Depressive Symptom Phenotypes Among Black/African American Mothers

BACKGROUND

Depression is a growing global problem with significant individual and societal costs. Despite their consequences, depressive symptoms are poorly recognized and undertreated because wide variation in symptom presentation limits clinical identification-particularly among African American (AA) women-an understudied population at an increased risk of health inequity.

OBJECTIVES

The aims of this study were to explore depressive symptom phenotypes among AA women and examine associations with epigenetic, cardiometabolic, and psychosocial factors.

METHODS

This cross-sectional, retrospective analysis included self-reported Black/AA mothers from the Intergenerational Impact of Genetic and Psychological Factors on Blood Pressure study (data collected in 2015-2020). Clinical phenotypes were identified using latent class analysis. Bivariate logistic regression examined epigenetic age, cardiometabolic traits (i.e., body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m 2 , hypertension, or diabetes), and psychosocial variables as predictors of class membership.

RESULTS

All participants were Black/AA and predominantly non-Hispanic. Over half of the sample had one or more cardiometabolic traits. Two latent classes were identified (low vs. moderate depressive symptoms). Somatic and self-critical symptoms characterized the moderate symptom class. Higher stress overload scores significantly predicted moderate-symptom class membership.

DISCUSSION

In this sample of AA women with increased cardiometabolic burden, increased stress was associated with depressive symptoms that standard screening tools may not capture. Research examining the effect of specific stressors and the efficacy of tools to identify at-risk AA women are urgently needed to address disparities and mental health burdens.

Depressive subfactors and cognitive function in midlife

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to evaluate the heterogeneous association of depressive subtypes with cognitive function, according to age and sex.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study utilized the baseline data from the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disease Etiology Research Center cohort and included 5271 midlife participants. For identifying depressive subtypes of the Beck Depression Inventory Ⅱ items, factor analyses were utilized and yielded two factors -melancholic- and somatic-depressive subtypes. The information of Mini-Mental State Examination was used for screening cognitive function. The association between depressive subtypes and cognitive function was analysed using multiple regression after adjusting for all covariates.

RESULTS

We observed heterogeneous association between depressive subtypes and cognitive dysfunction in midlife participants. The results of sex- and age- stratified analyses indicated that the somatic subtype was associated with dysfunction in cognitive ability. Among women, especially those aged over 60 years, MMSE scores decreased as the somatic depression scores increased. These results might suggest that the somatic subtype, rather than the melancholic subtype, has a greater association with cognitive assessment in a general midlife population, particularly older women.

LIMITATIONS

Although a confirmatory factor analysis was performed, depressive subtypes need validation and reliability tests.

CONCLUSIONS

Given this heterogeneity, characterisation of depressive subtypes according to sex and age may improve our understanding of how each depressive symptom is associated differently with cognitive dysfunction in midlife.

Depressive symptoms, its sub-factors, and augmentation index: the modifying effects according to inflammatory markers

Background This study aimed to investigate the association between depression and the augmentation index (AIx), and to further investigate whether there is a difference in this association according to the patients' inflammatory status. Methods This study included 458 men and 815 women (mean age: 49.35 years), a community-dwelling and middle-aged Korean population. The Korean version of the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) was used to assess depressive symptoms. Arterial stiffness was evaluated via an AIx normalized to 75 beats/min. We confirmed two factors from BDI-II after conducting a factor analysis. Multiple regression models were used after adjusting for socio-demographic factors, lifestyle factors, systolic blood pressure, diabetes history, and body mass index. We further stratified the data according to inflammatory biomarkers with cutoffs of the 75^th percentile. Results There was a significant positive association between the BDI-II score and arterial stiffness (ß= 0.09, p-value=0.037). In women, the somatic-affective factor showed a stronger positive association (ß= 0.20, p-value=0.018) with arterial stiffness than the cognitive factor (ß= 0.12, p-value=0.148). There was no significant association in men (ß= -0.01, p-value=0.943). In subgroup analyses, women showed significant positive associations between the somatic affective factor of depressive symptoms on and arterial stiffness according to both inflammatory markers (IL-6: ß= 0.17, p-value=0.039; hs-CRP: ß= 0.17, p-value=0.094) Limitations The design of the cross-sectional study limits causal interpretation. Conclusion Depression and its somatic-affective factor were positively associated with arterial stiffness in women. Inflammatory status may be involved in modifying the association between depressive symptoms, its sub-factors, and AIx.

Association of Psychosocial Symptoms, Blood Pressure, and Menopausal Status in African-American Women

African-American women have disproportionate rates of hypertension that can be further complicated as they transition through menopause. Stress, coupled with depression and hypertension in perimenopausal African-American women has not been fully explored. This study examines the associations of stress, depression, and social support on systolic blood pressure (SBP) among a sample of 184 perimenopausal African-American women. We used descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and logistic regression to analyze data stratified by menopausal status (perimenopausal or menopausal) and SBP status (<130 mmHg vs. >130 mmHg). Women classified as menopausal reported higher levels of stress and depressive symptoms, and lower levels of social support. Age, body mass index (BMI), health insurance, and perceived health status were significant predictors of SBP in menopausal women. Stress, depression, and social support did not play a role in SBP. It is necessary that future research focus on reducing cardiovascular risk include addressing menopausal health.

A Power Conundrum: Black Women and Their Sexual Partners in the Midwest

The purpose of this research was to determine the extent to which women of African ancestry manifested power in their relationships regarding sexual activities and to examine the influence that specific variables had on their sexual partnerships. A sample (N = 200) of midlife women aged 40-65, who lived in the Midwest participated in this research. The Sexual Relationship Power Scale was used to examine these relationships. Face-to-face interviews occurred in community settings. Multiple regression equations were used to examine the potential impact of specific variables on sexual functioning. Results of the analysis revealed that variables such as mental quality of life, decision-making, and health promotion were positively associated with sexual relationships. Conversely, depression and life stress scores were negatively linked to sexual relationships. Knowledge gained from this research could be used to explore the phenomena of power as expressed in the daily lives of women of African descent. The research can also be discussed from the perspective of a "Black tax," that has burdened Black women for centuries and is manifested through years of discrimination, bias, and the lack of equity in most domains of American institutions.
