Transthoracic Migration of a Foreign Body into the Diaphragm from the Gunshot Injury and Its Management in a Child: A Case Report

Intrapleural foreign bodies (FB) are rare and uncommon, while diaphragmatic FB secondary to gunshot injury in a child is still rarer. We now describe a 9-year-old male with a history of self-inflicted accidental air gun injury on the right side of the midline of the sternum with transthoracic migration of FB—lead bullet—measuring 1cm x1.4cm into the diaphragm managed initially with intercostal tube drainage for right hemopneumothorax at the different center underwent thoracoscopy followed by minithoracotomy and retrieval under C-arm guidance that has not been reported in the literature.

The purpose of study is an objective solution to the issue of gunshot nature of the injury and its differential diagnosis from other injuries caused, for example, by shots from airguns. 11 objective morphological signs of firearms were established (X1-11), which allow categorically solving the question of gunshot nature of the injury and its difference from damage caused, for example, by shots from airguns. The phenomenon of "dieseling" of airguns is considered as a factor in the differential diagnosis of pneumoshot and gunshot injuries.

[The injuries to the nose and paranasal sinuses in the children resulting from shooting an air rifle]

This article reports two clinical cases of the successful treatment of the gunshot wounds in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses of the children resulting from the careless use of the pneumatic weapons. Despite the fact that the shots were fired from a close distance, the intracranial structures and the eyeballs remained unaffected. The bullets were localized in the nasal septum of one child and in the frontal recess of the other as is typical of the injuries inflicted to the nose and paranasal sinuses by the shots from the air rifles. Multi-slice spiral computed tomography (MSCT) is known to have a number of important advantages over the roentgenological examination for determining the location of the bullets. Bullets for pneumatic rifles are manufactured in the form of the balls either from lead or copper-coated steel; therefore, they are a priory can not be removed with the use of a magnet.

Entrapment of an air gun pellet between the thyroid cartilage and the lining mucosa in a patient with a penetrating neck injury: a case report

Introduction

Air guns, either modern or traditional models, are powerful weapons that are capable of causing serious or life-threatening injuries.

Case presentation

Here, we present a case of an air gun pellet injury, with the pellet trapped between the thyroid cartilage and the lining mucosa of a 58-year-old Iranian man.

Conclusion

Entrapment of air gun pellet between thyroid cartilage and the lining mucosa, as presented in our case, may cause diagnostic challenges through the clinical presentation of slight odynophagia.

A rare presentation of pellet injury in the neck

Penetrating neck injuries are dangerous and deserve emergency treatment by virtue of the vital structures present underneath. There is a potential risk of unrecognized vascular injury and retained foreign bodies with their associated complications in these wounds. Therefore, an early diagnostic workup to localize the site of injury and an immediate neck exploration are important.

Carotid artery injury from an airgun pellet: a case report and review of the literature

Historically airguns were powerful weapons. Modern models, though less lethal, are still capable of inflicting serious or life threatening injuries. Current United Kingdom legislation fails to take into the account the capacity for airguns to maim and kill. We believe that airguns should be governed by the same law that applies to firearms. We present a case of a potentially fatal airgun injury to the neck. The airgun pellet caused a defect in the anterior wall of the external carotid artery, which required rapid access and surgical repair. We discuss the mechanism of airgun injury and review the literature in terms of investigation and management.
