Abstract
It is widely recognized that four key health behaviors-regular physical activity, maintaining a normal BMI, eating a healthy diet, and avoiding smoking-offer significant protection against cardiovascular disease in children and adolescents. However, changes in the lifestyle of families have contributed to the emergence of new behaviors that may impact the health of children and adolescents. This narrative review aims to identify existing evidence on the effect of these arising habits on the cardiovascular health of children and adolescents, mainly on blood pressure and endothelial function. A thorough search was conducted across various databases, including PubMed/MEDLINE, the Cochrane Library, Science Direct and EBSCO. CONCLUSION Some of the behaviors most frequently identified in the pediatrician's office are childhood stress and behavioral disorders, new forms of nicotine consumption, the impact of the use of screens and digital devices, changes in sleep patterns, and, finally, the generalization of energy drinks and supplements to promote muscle development, mainly in adolescents. The effect on cardiovascular health, mainly on blood pressure, does not seem negligible. Early identification of these unhealthy behaviors might allow the pediatrician to intervene and prevent the progression of cardiovascular disease. WHAT IS KNOWN • Traditional cardiovascular risks (poor diet, inactivity, smoking, obesity) contribute to hypertension and endothelial dysfunction in youth. • Western family lifestyles have shifted dramatically over two decades, altering pediatric environments. WHAT IS NEW • Emerging risks include psychosocial stressors, novel nicotine products, screen time-induced HTN, sleep deprivation, and energy drink/supplement use. • These factors correlate with blood pressure elevation, endothelial damage, and chronic inflammation, urging pediatricians to address non-traditional factors in holistic care.

Abstract
The 24-h movement guidelines for children and adolescents comprise recommendations for adequate sleep, moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behaviour (SB). However, whether adolescents who meet these 24-h movement guidelines may be less likely to have high blood pressure (HBP) has not been established. The present study assessed the association between meeting 24-h movement guidelines and HBP in a school-based sample of 996 adolescents between 10-17 years (13.2 ± 2.4 years, 55.4% of girls). Blood pressure was measured using a digital oscillometric device, while sleep, MVPA and SB were measured using the Baecke questionnaire. The association between the 24-h movement guidelines and HBP was performed using binary logistic regression adjusted for sex, age, socioeconomic status, and body mass index. It was observed that less than 1% of the sample meet the three 24-h movement guidelines. The prevalence of HBP was lower in adolescents who meet all three movement 24-h guidelines (11.1%) compared to those who did not meet any guidelines (27.2%). Individual 24-h movement guidelines analysis showed that adolescents with adequate sleep were 35% less likely to have HBP (OR = 0.65; 95% CI 0.46-0.91). Meeting sleep guidelines combined with meeting MVPA (OR = 0.69; 95% CI 0.50-0.95) or SB (OR = 0.67; 95% CI 0.48-0.94) was inversely associated with HBP. Adolescents who meet two or three 24-h movement guidelines were respectively 47% (OR = 0.53; 95% CI 0.29-0.98) and 34% (OR = 0.66; 95% CI 0.48-0.91) less likely to have HBP. In adolescents, meeting sleep and 24-h movement guidelines were inversely associated with HBP.

Abstract
AIM Sleep duration has been suggested to be associated with hypertension (HTN). However, evidence of the nature of the relationship and its direction has been inconsistent. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to assess the relationship between sleep duration and risk of HTN incidence, and to distinguish more susceptible populations. METHODS PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and ProQuest were searched from January 2000 to May 2023 for cohort studies comparing short and long sleep durations with 7-8 hours of sleep for the risk of HTN incidence. Random-effect model (the DerSimonian-Laird method) was applied to pool risk ratios (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS We included sixteen studies ranging from 2.4 to 18 years of follow-up duration evaluating HTN incidence in 1,044,035 people. Short sleep duration was significantly associated with a higher risk of developing HTN (HR: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.06-1.09). The association was stronger when the sleep duration was less than 5 hours (HR: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.08-1.14). In contrast to males, females (HR: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.04-1.09) were more vulnerable to developing HTN due to short sleep duration. No significant difference between different follow-up durations and age subgroups was observed. Long sleep duration was not associated with an increased incidence of HTN. CONCLUSION Short sleep duration was associated with higher risk of HTN incidence, however, there was no association between long sleep duration and incidence of HTN. These findings highlight the importance of implementing target-specific preventive and interventional strategies for vulnerable populations with short sleep duration to reduce the risk of HTN.

Abstract
Evidence about the relationship between meal and sleep time and CVD in children is scarce. The aims of this study were to describe the association between life rhythm patterns and blood pressure in children. This research was conducted among 5,608 children aged 6 to 15 years old in Chongqing and Sichuan provinces in 2021 and 2022. Dietary and sleep rhythms information was collected. The time of the first meal and last meal, and sleep time, were obtained. The mean age was 10.48 ± 2.24 years old, with 2958 (52.75%) male participants. The mean feeding window on weekdays was 11.69 h, 12.42 h, and 13.23 h for participants aged 6-7 years old, 8-12 years old and 13-15 years old, respectively. Weekday feeding window and last mealtime were positively correlated with blood pressure levels. And the changes in the feeding window between weekdays and weekends were significantly correlated with BP. Sleep duration and change in wake time were significantly correlated with SBP. Based on these results, this study identified the optimal combination of dietary and sleep rhythm interventions for children younger than 12 years of age and aged 12 and older, respectively. Disorder dietary and sleep rhythms disorders may correlate with elevated blood pressure levels, suggesting developing optimal dietary and sleep rhythm patterns could prevent the incidence of CVDs in children. The optimal dietary rhythm was defined by the indexes of breakfast time, dinner time and daily feeding window. As good meal patterns are defined as satisfied the following three items: for children younger than 12 years should have breakfast after 7:30 am; aged 12 years and over should have breakfast after 7 am; having dinner before 6 pm; daily feeding window less than 12.5 h. And less optimal dietary rhythm should satisfy any condition or eat dinner between 6 pm and 8 pm; and poor dietary rhythm should not satisfy any of the three criteria and eat dinner after 8 pm. Children with optimal dietary rhythm (in group A) had lower SBP (P < 0.001), DBP (P = 0.002) and MAP (P < 0.001) than those in group C.

Abstract
Background Evidence regarding the relationship between sleep duration and blood pressure is controversial. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between sleep duration and blood pressure in children with short stature. Methods A total of 1,085 participants with short stature were enrolled from the Affiliated Hospital of Jining Medical University in China. The variables involved in this study included sleep duration, anthropometric indicators and biochemical parameters. Sleep duration was evaluated in a face-to-face interview. Results The average age of the 1,085 selected participants was 10.2 ± 3.5 years old, and approximately 763 (70.32%) of them were male. The results of adjusted linear regression showed that sleep duration was negatively associated with systolic blood pressure z scores (SBP-Z) and diastolic blood pressure z scores (DBP-Z) after adjusting for confounders (β -0.07, 95% CI -0.13, -0.01 P = 0.038; β -0.05, 95% CI -0.10, -0.01 P = 0.035, respectively). A nonlinear relationship was detected between sleep duration and blood pressure, including SBP-Z, DBP-Z and mean arterial pressure z scores (MAP-Z). The inflection point of the nonlinear relationship between sleep duration and SBP-Z is 10 h, and the inflection point of DBP-Z and MAP-Z is 8 h. Conclusion This study revealed a nonlinear relationship between sleep duration and blood pressure in children with short stature. The findings suggest that the optimal sleep duration in children with short stature was 8-10 h, and sleep durations either too short or too long were associated with increased blood pressure levels.

Abstract
Adolescents' sleep problems and their association with mental health is an important public health concern. This study aimed to investigate sleep and mental health status and the association of sleep with mental health in Chinese high school students. Data came from a cross-sectional study in Guangdong province which included 42,077 high school students. Sleep quality and sleep duration were obtained through self-report. The Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) was used to measure mental health. The association between sleep quality, sleep duration, and mental health was analysed using logistic regression. The prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms were 35.27%, 42.32%, and 21.87% in high school students, respectively. And only 17.71% and 34.41% of the high school students had very good sleep quality and ≥8 h sleep duration, respectively. Poorer sleep quality and shorter sleep duration were risk factors for mental health problems in high school students. Compared to high school students with very good sleep quality and ≥8 h sleep duration, the high school students with poor or very poor sleep quality and <6 h sleep duration had the highest risk of depression symptoms (odds ratio [OR] 5.02, 95% confidence interval [CI] 4.40-5.72), anxiety symptoms (OR 6.02, 95% CI5.25-6.89), and stress symptoms (OR 6.12, 95% CI5.30-7.06). Considering the combined association of sleep quality and sleep duration on mental health, it is important not only to ensure that high school students have sufficient sleep duration, but also to improve their sleep quality.

Abstract
Hypertension is a major contributor to fatal/nonfatal cardiovascular diseases, and timely identification and appropriate management of factors affecting hypertension and its control are mandatory public health issues. By inducing neurohormonal alterations and metabolic impairment, sleep disorders have an impact on a variety of cardiovascular risk factors, including hypertension, and ultimately increase the risk of cardiovascular events. There is evidence that qualitative and quantitative sleep disorders are associated with resistant hypertension and with impaired circadian blood pressure variations. However, sleep disturbances are often unrecognized, or heterogeneity exists in their management by non-specialists in the field. This document by the Italian Society of Hypertension summarizes the updated evidence linking sleep disorders to hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, the major underlying mechanisms, and the possible management strategies. A simplified, evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic algorithm for comorbid hypertension and common sleep disorders, namely obstructive sleep apnoea and insomnia, is proposed.

Abstract
Hypertension affects approximately one third of the world's adult population and is a major cause of premature death despite considerable advances in pharmacological treatments. Growing evidence supports the use of lifestyle interventions for the prevention and adjuvant treatment of hypertension. In this Review, we provide a summary of the epidemiological research supporting the preventive and antihypertensive effects of major lifestyle interventions (regular physical exercise, body weight management and healthy dietary patterns), as well as other less traditional recommendations such as stress management and the promotion of adequate sleep patterns coupled with circadian entrainment. We also discuss the physiological mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of these lifestyle interventions on hypertension, which include not only the prevention of traditional risk factors (such as obesity and insulin resistance) and improvements in vascular health through an improved redox and inflammatory status, but also reduced sympathetic overactivation and non-traditional mechanisms such as increased secretion of myokines.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Hypertension is a common finding in children, and increases the risk for future cardiovascular events. This review focuses on recent advances in pediatric hypertension research including changes in hypertension guidelines, epidemiology, predictors of hypertension, blood pressure (BP) measurement, effects on target organs, and treatment of hypertension. RECENT FINDINGS Changes in the 2017 hypertension guidelines by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) have resulted in increased prevalence of elevated BP and hypertension in the United States, and there is no international consensus on these changes. Despite rising pediatric overweight and obesity in China, hypertension prevalence is stable, suggesting multifactorial effects on childhood BP. Maternal diabetes and exposure to particulate matter are associated with higher childhood BP, and body size in infancy and early childhood is a determinant of adult high BP. Children with elevated BP have evidence of target organ damage with altered retinal vasculature and pulse wave velocity parameters compared to normotensive patients. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers may be the best antihypertensive medications for the pediatric population even for African-American patients. SUMMARY Research continues to illuminate contributors to pediatric hypertension and demonstrates opportunities for further study on the effects of hypertension and its management in children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To review the epidemiological evidence of the association between sleep duration and blood pressure in adolescents. DATA SOURCES We performed a systematic review of observational studies in Medline, Scopus, Lilacs, Web of Science, Science Direct databases and Virtual Libraries in English, Spanish and Portuguese published until September 2018. Studies were selected first by title and abstract, then by complete reading, according to the eligibility criteria. The reference list of selected articles was evaluated in order to retrieve relevant studies. DATA SYNTHESIS Initially, 1,455 articles were retrieved. After exclusion due to duplicity or not meeting the eligibility criteria, 13 articles were included in the review. Studies varied greatly in sample size (143 to 6,940 patients), methods of measuring blood pressure and sleep duration, cutoff points, categorization and adjustment of variables. The main evidence from the studies is that short sleep duration is associated with high blood pressure in adolescence, although the presence of association between high blood pressure and long sleep duration is possible, but not clear in the literature. CONCLUSIONS Sleep duration, especially short duration, is associated with high blood pressure in adolescents. Such evidence draws attention to implications on cardiovascular health in this age group.

Effects of strength training on sleep parameters of adolescents: a randomized controlled trial. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2020-This study aimed to examine the effects of 12-weeks of strength training (ST) on sleep quality and daytime sleepiness in adolescents with sleep complaints. Thirty adolescents were randomly assigned to 2 groups: ST group (ST, n = 18) and control group (CG, n = 12). Anthropometric, body composition, one-repetition maximum test, and sleep parameters (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI] and Epworth Sleepiness Scale [ESS]) were evaluated. Training consisted of 55 min·d (3 times a week, for 12-weeks), 3 sets of 10-12 repetitions with a 1-minute rest interval between sets and exercises. Baseline and postintervention differences were analyzed using Generalized Estimating Equations and the effect size (ES) with Cohen's d coefficient. Significance was set at (p < 0.05). After 12-weeks of ST, a significant decrease in the PSQI score (7.3 ± 0.7 vs. 5.1 ± 0.6; ES = 4.10) was observed in the ST group, but not in the CG (6.3 ± 0.8 vs. 7.4 ± 0.7; ES = 1.53). A significant decrease in ESS score was found in the ST group (10.1 ± 0.7 vs. 8.2 ± 0.7; ES = 3.08), without differences in the CG (10.7 ± 0.8 vs. 11.0 ± 0.7; ES = 0.56). The ST group presented increased total sleep duration (h·min) (6.2 ± 0.2 vs. 6.9 ± 0.2; ES = 3.60), but not the CG (7.0 ± 0.2 vs. 6.8 ± 0.1; ES = 1.32). Individual analyses showed ≈67% of adolescents experienced a reduction in PSQI (8.3; confidence interval [CI] 95% 6.8-10.1) and ESS (8.3; CI 95% 6.7-9.9) scores after ST, whereas only ≈17% of control participants presented reduced scores (PSQI [11.1; CI 95% 9.5-12.9] and ESS [11.0; CI 95% 9.4-12.6]). Strength training improved sleep quality and increased total sleep duration.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hypertension affects up to 5% of children worldwide and predicts later cardiovascular morbidity. Associations of short sleep and hypertension have been frequently reported in adults but less consistently in children. This study aims to examine the role of late bedtimes, a marker of short sleep duration, and potentially misaligned circadian rhythms, on incident elevated blood pressure (BP) in a large cohort of Mexican children. METHODS Participants included 2,033 adolescents recruited from public schools in Morelos, Mexico, free from elevated BP (<90th sex, age, and height-standardized percentile). Fourteen months later, all adolescents had a second BP assessment. We abstracted baseline habitual bedtimes from questionnaires to evaluate the association between bedtime and elevated BP incidence (≥90th percentile). Risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals were estimated with discrete-time mixed survival models, adjusting for potential confounders and accounting for clustering by school. RESULTS Participants were 12.5 (SD = 0.6) years old at baseline. At the follow-up visit 10% of adolescents had developed elevated BP. Compared to participants with a habitual weekday bedtime between 9 and 10 pm, those with a weekday bedtime 11 pm or later had a 1.87 times higher risk of developing elevated BP over the follow-up period (95% CI = 1.09, 2.21), after accounting for confounders. Participants with earlier weekday bedtimes also had a higher risk of elevated BP (RR = 1.96; 95% CI = 1.27, 3.01). The associations persisted after accounting for wake time. CONCLUSION These data showed a U-shaped association between weekday bedtime and elevated/high BP risk among Mexican adolescents.
