Abstract
Sleep disorders (SD) in children is a topic of great relevance due to their impact on a child's general health. This has led us to study their prevalence and the factors that disturb them in the developing population. Using a validated Likert-type questionnaire, different behaviors observed by the parents during the different phases of their children's sleep were evaluated during the last 6 months. A total of 206 children between the ages of 7 and 17 who attended a dental office participated in the study. The prevalence of SD was 47.6%. There were no significant differences regarding the SD in relation to sex (p = 0.796). The mean total score for children aged 7 to 11 years old was 42.3 (±14.25) compared to 45.44 (±15.51) for the group consisting of children aged 12 to 17 years old, reporting a statistically significant difference among both age groups (p = 0.01). The most frequent disorder was related to initiating and maintaining sleep (64.9%) while the least prevalent were the respiratory sleep disorders (27.2%). Given the high prevalence of these disorders, it is necessary to intercept them during childhood and establish educational guidelines in this regard throughout primary care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and incisal relationships related to sleep bruxism and parafunctional habits among children. METHODS The study consisted of 106 children (53 with and 53 without bruxism) between the ages of 7 and 10. A general questionnaire and Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders Axis I examination form were used for each child. RESULTS There were significant differences between children according to pain, headache, midline deviation, opening pattern, temporomandibular joint noise, overjet, overbite, corrected deviation, and pain disorders (p < 0.05). According to the logistic regression, the higher scores of "mouth breathing" and "horizontal incisal overjet" were independent risk factors for TMDs. The lack of "bruxism" and "sleeping with open mouth" were protective factors for TMDs. CONCLUSION Children with bruxism showed signs and symptoms of TMDs and divergence in incisal relationships.

Abstract
(1) Background: This study aims to compare the effects of 3D-printed splints and conventional manufactured splints on sleep bruxism (SB) EMG activity. (2) Methods: Twenty-six patients (19 M, 7 F, 25.8 ± 2.6 years) were randomly allocated to a study group (3D splints) and a control group (conventional manufactured splints) and followed for a period of three months with night EMG-ECG recordings. Samples of the involved materials were analyzed for nanoindentation. The outcomes of interest considered were the overall SB index, the total amount of surface masseter muscle activity (sMMA), and general and SB-related phasic and tonic contractions. A statistical evaluation was performed with a confidence interval (CI) between 2.5% and 97.5%. (3) Results: Differences between groups with OAs were observed for general tonic contraction (p = 0.0009), while differences between recording times were observed for general phasic contractions (p = 0.002) and general tonic contractions (p = 0.00001). Differences between recording times were observed for the total amount of sMMA (p = 0.01), for general phasic contractions (p = 0.0001), and for general tonic contractions (p = 0.000009) during night recordings without OAs. (4) Conclusions: Three-dimensional splints seem to have a higher impact on SB-related electromyographic activity but not on the overall sleep bruxism index. The more regular surfaces offered by 3D splints could be related to phasic contraction stabilization.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE This review paper focuses on sleep bruxism (SB) in children and adolescents. It aims to assess the landscape of knowledge published in the last 20 years. METHODS A total of 144 relevant publications from 386 previously identified through Medline were included, of which 83 were on possible SB, 37 on probable SB, 20 on definite SB and 4 were non-applicable. The review places emphasis on the recent evidence on prevalence, pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of SB in children and adolescents, with special focus on probable and definitive SB. RESULTS The prevalence ranges from 5% to 50% depending on the age range and on the SB diagnosis (possible, probable or definitive). The pathophysiology is multifactorial, arousal associated and with behavioural problems and sleep disorders (obstructive sleep apnoea, snoring, nightmares) as risk factors, as well as respiratory conditions (allergies, oral breathing). Screening should include questionnaires and dental assessment. Instrumental recording is helpful to confirm diagnosis although more studies are needed to validate this approach in children. SB management includes controlling orofacial and dental consequences and assessing for any other comorbidity. Management options include occlusal splints, oral appliances (advancement mandibular), rapid maxillary expansion and some medications, although this last option is supported by limited evidences in children. CONCLUSION Suggestions of future topics in research are delivered to better understand comorbidities, diagnosis and management with improved outcomes compared to what is currently available.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the relationship between sleep habits and sleep bruxism (SB) in schoolaged children. METHODS Survey data were collected from the parents of 500 children (267 males and 233 females; age range 6-12 years). The American Academy of Sleep Medicine diagnostic criteria were used to evaluate SB. A Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire was conducted to determine sleep habits. The chi-square test was used for statistical evaluation. RESULTS SB was observed in 160 children (32%). SB awareness was 5.4%. The presence of SB in other family members, mothers' education ≤8 years, and income below minimum wage were found as family risk factors. The presence of sleep disorders was 61.4% and observed to be statistically higher in those with SB. CONCLUSION SB is a prevalent disorder that might be associated with sleep disorders. The parents of children with SB had inadequate knowledge and awareness pertaining to SB.

Abstract
The prevalence of bruxism in the preschool population varies according to different investigations. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of sleep bruxism and its relationship with social and orofacial factors in children aged 3 to 5 years. Three hundred forty-three preschool children were divided into two groups, one with nocturnal bruxism, as reported by parents, and another without this disorder. Questionnaires were distributed to the parents to determine the children's family social status and parafunctional habits at the time of the study. The clinical inspection confirmed the presence of certain parafunctional habits and the children's occlusal characteristics. The data obtained were analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency chi-square tests to identify the influence of qualitative variables. Of the total sample, 28.9% of preschoolers presented sleep bruxism. The highest prevalence was observed in boys (61.6%) at the age of 5 years (41.4%). Characteristics associated with this pathology were lip incompetence, open bite, crossbite, and overbite, with p < 0.05. Sleep bruxism in preschool children has a higher prevalence in boys and is more frequently expressed from 5 years of age. Open bite, overbite, and crossbite should be considered factors associated with parafunction.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sleep bruxism is a parasomnia caused by rhythmic and non-rhythmic activity of the masticatory muscles during sleep. Prevalence of sleep bruxism is reported up to 40.6% in the literature. Sleep bruxism is a multifactorial issue and associated with multiple dental complications, sleep-related disorders, and psychosocial problems. We aimed to investigate if children with sleep bruxism suffer more from lower urinary tract conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS Prospectively 128 children were included in this study. Sixty-four children constituted in the bruxism group and 64 children constituted in the control group. Children who admitted to the pediatric dentistry clinic with bruxism symptoms were recruited in the bruxism group. Control group constituted of consecutive 64 children who admitted to the pediatric dentistry clinic for routine dental examination. Parents were asked to fill out a questionnaire including Dysfunctional Voiding and Incontinence Scoring System (DVISS) form. Children's demographic data, presence of urinary frequency, presence of urgency, behaviour of voiding postponement, presence of daytime urinary incontinence, presence of enuresis nocturna, presence of fecal incontinence, presence of constipation, status of circumcision, and presence of bruxism related symptoms were recorded. Children with a DVISS score above 8 were considered to have functional voiding disorder. All children underwent a dental examination. RESULTS The mean age of children was 73.3 ± 26.9 months. For all children (n = 128), the girl to boy ratio was 40:88. Mean DVISS score was 2.5 ± 3.8 and the mean QOL score was 0.1 ± 0.4 for all children. Eight (6.3%) children were found to have functional voiding disorder based on the DVISS score. There was no statistically significant difference for any lower urinary tract condition between the bruxism group and the control group (Table). Children with bruxism significantly had more tooth wear and masseter muscle hypertrophy (<0.001 and < 0.05). DISCUSSION Sleep bruxism has been linked to a number of health issues including dental, systemic and psychosocial problems. Tooth wears, fatigue/pain in chewing muscles, gum recession, facial pain, masseter muscle hypertrophy and temporomandibular joint damage are the main complications of bruxism. Moreover, bruxism has been associated with systemic diseases and sypmtoms like asthma, respiratory illnesses, enuresis nocturna, anxiety, and stress. CONCLUSIONS Children with sleep bruxism suffer more from tooth wear, masseter muscle hypertrophy, and regional pain over the jaw. Additionally morning fatigue, relationship issues, and respiratory illnesses are more common in bruxist children. Lower urinary tract conditions are not more frequent in children with sleep bruxism.

Abstract
Background: Bruxism in children and adolescents is underreported and needs strong awareness among parents. No study has attempted to validate the sleep bruxism questionnaire, particularly in Saudi adolescents. Objective: This study aims to validate the sleep bruxism questionnaire on the experience of jaw pain and limitation of jaw movement in Saudi adolescents from 10 to 19 years of age. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional (survey) study in which we distributed an Arabic translation of a questionnaire on sleep bruxism among 200 parents of patients who attended the dental clinics of the Faculty of Dentistry, King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for treatment. Cronbach's alpha and interclass correlation coefficients were checked for reliability and internal consistency of the items. For validity, convergent validity analysis was accomplished by analyzing temporomandibular disorder and sleep bruxism. The response rate was 85%. Results: There was a weak association between jaw pain with jaw lock (coefficient value = 0.249) and bruxism (coefficient value = 0.287). Bruxism and jaw lock had a robust correlation (coefficient value = 0.920). Conclusion: The Arabic version of the sleep bruxism questionnaire is reliable and valid for assessing sleep bruxism toward the experience of jaw pain and limitation of jaw movement in Saudi Arabian adolescent patients.

Abstract
Sleep bruxism (SB) is a behavior of central origin that is related to different factors. This systematic review aimed to determine the prevalence of clinical signs and symptoms of the masticatory system and their association in children with SB. A structured search in ten databases were taken. Two authors independently selected studies, extracted the data, study quality assessment and graded the evidence. A meta-analysis of proportion and association was performed under random-effect model, confidence interval of 95% and p < 0.05 for pulled values. Were included 22 studies, and their overall quality was poor. The more common clinical signs and symptoms of the masticatory system in children with SB were primary canine wear (P:84.13, 95% CI:78.13-89.32; p = 0.248; I2 25.05), dental wear (P:73.76, 95% CI:38.73-96.91; p < 0.001; I2 97.62) and headache (P:52.85, 95% CI:38.92-66.56; p < 0.001; I2 93.65). The prevalence of SB in children was 31.16% (P:31.16, 95% CI:22.18-40.92; p < 0.001; I2 98.56). There was no significant risk of dental wear and headache in children with SB. There is low to very low certainty of the evidence. The more prevalent clinical signs and symptoms of the masticatory system presented in children with SB were primary canine wear, dental wear and headache. Further studies of high quality are still needed to elucidate these important questions.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to verify the oral habits, symptoms, and characteristics of some children aged 8 to 10 years that could be associated with possible sleep bruxism. A cross-sectional study was performed. Questionnaires were sent to parents to obtain information on sex, age, school shift, sleep quality, parents' perception of children's behavior, and children's oral habits (nail biting, object biting, and lip biting), and symptoms such as headache or earache. In addition, parents reported the frequency of sleep bruxism (no day to 7 days a week). Descriptive analysis and multinomial logistic regression were performed and the level of significance was set at 5%. A total of 1,554 parents of children aged 8 to 10 years participated in this study. Possible sleep bruxism was reported as mild for 65.7%, moderate for 25.3%, and severe for 9% of the children. In the adjusted multinomial logistic regression, boys were 79% more likely to have sleep bruxism (OR: 1.79; 95%CI 1.23-2.60) and were 2.06 more times at risk of being in the habit of lip biting (OR: 2.06; 95%CI 1.26-3.37). Children with possible severe sleep bruxism were 61% more likely to develop object biting (OR: 1.61; 95%CI 1.09-2.39), 52% more likely to have headaches (OR: 1.52; 95%CI 1.01-2.28), and 3.29 more times at risk of poor sleep quality (OR: 3.29; 95%CI 2.25-4.82). Based on the report, boys with lip and object biting habits, headaches, and poor sleep quality presented a higher chance of possible severe sleep bruxism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bruxism in children and its relation to the development of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) has not been clearly determined yet. AIM The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the possible association between bruxism and TMD in children. DESIGN Seven databases were searched, and 497 articles were assessed. Methodological quality was assessed through Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The meta-analysis was performed with the articles in which extraction of data was possible and the summary effect measure through odds ratio (OR) and respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) was used to assess the certainty of evidence. RESULTS Ten cross-sectional studies were included in the systematic review. Of these, 8 showed a statistically significant association between bruxism and TMD. Seven studies however presented a high risk of bias. The meta-analysis was performed with 3 articles and obtained an OR of 2.97 (95% CI ranging from 1.72-5.15), indicating that children with bruxism are 2.97 times more likely to present TMD, with very low level of certainty defined by GRADE. CONCLUSIONS Although the studies showed high risk of bias, the qualitative analysis of individual studies showed that the children with bruxism have greater chance of developing TMD.

Abstract
PURPOSE The present randomized controlled clinical trial evaluated the efficacy of homeopathic medicines of Melissa officinalis (MO), Phytolacca decandra (PD), and the combination of both in the treatment of possible sleep bruxism (SB) in children. STUDY DESIGN Patients (n = 52) (6.62 ± 1.79 years old) were selected based on the parents report of SB. The study comprised a crossover design that included 4 phases of 30-day treatment (Placebo; MO 12c; PD 12c; and MO 12c + PD 12c), with a wash-out period of 15 days between treatments. METHODS At baseline and after each phase, the Visual Analogic Scale (VAS) was used as the primary outcome measure to evaluate the influence of treatments on the reduction of SB. The following additional outcome measures were used: a children's sleep diary with parent's/guardian's perceptions of their children's sleep quality, the trait of anxiety scale (TAS) to identify changes in children's anxiety profile, and side effects reports. Data were analyzed by ANOVA with repeated measures followed by Post Hoc LSD test. RESULTS Significant reduction of SB was observed in VAS after the use of Placebo (-1.72 ± 0.29), MO (-2.36 ± 0.36), PD (-1.44 ± 0.28) and MO + PD (-2.21 ± 0.30) compared to baseline (4.91 ± 1.87). MO showed better results compared to PD (p = 0.018) and Placebo (p = 0.050), and similar result compared to MO+PD (p = 0.724). The sleep diary results and TAS results were not influenced by any of the treatments. No side effects were observed after treatments. CONCLUSION MO showed promising results in the treatment of possible sleep bruxism in children, while the association of PD did not improve MO results.

Abstract
Sleep bruxism (SB) in children has been associated with several sleep characteristics, which may alter their sleep pattern. This change affects the internal biological clock and consequently the chronotype profile. The aim of this study was to evaluate the existence of an association between possible SB in children with specific chronotype profiles and sleep characteristics. The study included 207 parents/guardians of children aged between 3 and 12 years who were waiting for their children's dental treatment at the Pediatric Dentistry Clinic of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A questionnaire on the socio-demographic characteristics of parents and children as well as on the features of the children's sleep was applied. In addition, the CIRENS scale (Circadian Energy Scale) was completed by the parents to identify the children's chronotype. A chi-squared test was used to determine the association between possible SB, the chronotype, and sleep characteristics. A multiple logistic regression model was implemented to observe the influence of chronotype, age, and other independent variables on the possible SB. The logistic regression model demonstrated that nocturnal agitation (p = 0.009; OR = 3.42) and nightmares (p = 0.045; OR = 3.24) were associated with possible SB in children. Although no significant association (p = 0 .089) between the chronotype profile and possible SB was observed in the 3 to 5 years age group, a proportional difference was observed between the chronotype categories in this age group-12.5% of children with SB had a morning type, while 26.4% had an intermediate type and 47.8% an evening type compared to those without possible SB. Nocturnal agitation and nightmares were associated with possible SB. In addition, young children with an evening chronotype had a tendency toward possible SB.
