Treatment of antibiotics wastewater utilizing successive hydrolysis, denitrification and nitrification

Enhancing anaerobic digestion performance of oxytetracycline-laden wastewater through micro-nano bubble ozonation pretreatment

This study investigated the potential of micro-nano bubble (MNB) ozonation pretreatment to eliminate oxytetracycline (OTC) from wastewater and improve subsequent anaerobic digestion (AD) performance. The findings revealed that MNB ozonation achieved efficient OTC oxidation (>99 % in 60 min), and significantly enhanced methane production by 51 % compared to conventional ozonation (under 30 min of pretreatment). Additionally, MNB ozonation resulted in a decrease in the soluble chemical oxygen demand and reduced volatile fatty acid accumulation compared to conventional ozonation. Furthermore, the study sheds light on the profound impact of OTC and its oxidation by-products on the sludge microbiome. Exposure to OTC and its oxidation by-products resulted in alterations in extracellular polymeric substances composition and led to significant shifts in microbial community structure. This study highlights the promise of MNB ozonation as an effective approach for pharmaceutical pollutant removal and the optimization of AD performance in wastewater treatment, with implications for improved environmental sustainability.

Highly dispersed Fe7S8 anchored on sp2/sp3 hybridized carbon boosting peroxymonosulfate activation for enhanced EOCs elimination though singlet oxygen-dominated nonradical pathway

The synergistic effect of carbon materials with high sp2/sp3 hybridized carbon ratio and metal materials can enhance the efficiency of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) based advanced oxidation processes. In this study, a composite of highly dispersed Fe7S8 anchored on sp2/sp3 hybridized carbon (Fe7S8@HC) was developed by a facile synthesis for PMS activation. Within 10 min, the removal efficiency of the target pollutant doxycycline (DOX) could reach ca. 96 % in optimal Fe7S8@HC/PMS system through a 1O2-dominated non-radical pathway. Correlation mechanism analysis revealed that thiophene S, sp2/sp3 ratio and Fe(II) were critical factors for elongating of the O-O bond of PMS. Moreover, the Fe7S8@HC/PMS system exhibited favorable adaptability to interference such as common inorganic anions, humic acid and pH changes and could effectively remove various organic pollutants with low ionization potential. Moreover, the system maintained high DOX removal efficiency by running 30 cycles in a continuous flow reactor. Finally, susceptible sites of DOX and four degradation pathways were proposed by density functional theory calculation and LC-MS detection. This work not only offered new insights into the design of high-performance catalysts combining metal and biomass-based carbon materials, but also provided technical support for the remediation of water bodies containing emerging organic contaminants.

The Effect of Quinolones on Common Duckweed Lemna minor L., a Hydrophyte Bioindicator of Environmental Pollution

Plant growth and the development of morphological traits in plants are inhibited under exposure to pharmaceuticals that are present in soil and water. The present study revealed that moxifloxacin (MOXI), nalidixic acid (NAL), levofloxacin (LVF) and pefloxacin (PEF) at concentrations of >0.29, >0.48, >0.62 and >1.45 mg × L^-1, respectively, inhibited the growth (Ir) of duckweed plants and decreased their yield (Iy). In the current study, none of the tested quinolones (QNs) at any of the examined concentrations were lethal for common duckweed plants. However, at the highest concentration (12.8 mg × L^-1), LVF increased Ir and Iy values by 82% on average and increased the values of NAL, PEF and MOXI by 62% on average. All tested QNs led to the loss of assimilation pigments. In consequence, all QNs, except for LVF, induced changes in chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm), without any effect on phaeophytinization quotient (PQ) values. The uptake of NAL, MOXI, LVF by Lemna minor during the 7-day chronic toxicity test was directly proportional to drug concentrations in the growth medium. Nalidixic acid was absorbed in the largest quantities, whereas in the group of fluoroquinolones (FQNs), MOXI, LVF and PEF were less effectively absorbed by common duckweed. This study demonstrated that biosorption by L. minor occurs regardless of the plants' condition. These findings indicate that L. minor can be used as an effective biological method to remove QNs from wastewater and water and that biosorption should be a mandatory process in conventional water and wastewater treatment.

Residual β-lactam antibiotics and ecotoxicity to Vibrio fischeri, Daphnia magna of pharmaceutical wastewater in the treatment process

The discharge of pharmaceutical wastewater introduces numerous pollutants into the environment, and their pollution level reduction has aroused extensive concern. This study investigated the variation in residual antibiotics and ecotoxicity to two nutritional-level model organisms in the pharmaceutical wastewater treatment process (PWTP). The wastewater in the equalization tank contained massive organic matters (2.9-18.7 times higher than the permissible values in GB21903-2008) and antibiotics (310.88 μg/L), posing extremely toxic effects to Vibrio fischeri (V. fischeri) and Daphnia magna (D. magna). The biological anaerobic/aerobic treatment units contributed the most to the reduction of antibiotics and the ecotoxicity to both organisms, with the removal rates of 72% and > 90%, respectively. The ecotoxicity of pharmaceutical wastewater was strongly and positively correlated with the residual antibiotics, amoxicillin, cephalexin, ammonia nitrogen, and total phosphorus (P < 0.05). However, the detected amounts of amoxicillin and cephalexin were approximately 10⁵ times lower than the predicted no-effect concentrations of amoxicillin and cephalexin to V. fischeri and D. magna in freshwater, which implied the joint ecotoxicity posed by multicomponent mixtures, such as the residual antibiotics and organic toxic substances, rather than the specific residual antibiotics. This study provides a better understanding of the variations and residual levels of pollutants in PWTPs, including their ecotoxicity risk to the aquatic environment, highlighting the need to optimize pharmaceutical wastewater treatment technologies.

Formation of anaerobic granules and microbial community structure analysis in anaerobic hydrolysis denitrification reactor

An anaerobic hydrolysis denitrification (AnHD) process was developed to pretreat municipal wastewater for integrating partial nitration/anammox process. The results indicated that the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio of municipal wastewater changed from 4.4 ± 0.3 to 2.2 ± 0.2 after pretreatment by AnHD process, which was favorable to the partial nitration/anammox process. The influent C/N ratio had influence on the formation of anaerobic granules. Two intrinsic factors, cyclic diguanylic acid (c-di-GMP) concentration and core bacterial community, were mainly responsible for the anaerobic granular formation. The higher c-di-GMP content increased the extracellular polymeric substances and decreased the motility of the bacteria, which was beneficial for the formation of anaerobic granules. The microbial community analysis showed that the lactic acid bacteria (Lactococcus) was the core bacteria during anaerobic hydrolysis process, while the denitrifying bacteria (Denitratisoma and unclassified Comamonadaceae) were the core bacterial community during AnHD process, which were responsible for nitrogen removal and anaerobic granular formation.

Ce-Mn modify Al2O3 adsorbent and the effect on adsorption and regeneration properties

The regeneration of adsorbent by thermal method may transfer the adsorbed organic pollutants into the air phase. Herein, manganese and cerium are loaded on adsorbent as catalyst to mineralize the adsorbed organic pollutants during regeneration. The modified adsorbent is characterized by scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometer, Brunauer Emmett Teller-Barrett Joyner Halenda, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Regeneration of modified adsorbent is evaluated by adsorbent yield and mineralization percentage of the absorbed organic pollutants. The results demonstrate that the mineralization percentage of tetracycline increased about 100% after the modification. Besides, the loaded catalyst can significantly reduce the regeneration temperature. Furthermore, cerium can reduce the adverse impact causes by manganese which will decrease the adsorption capacity of adsorbent. Kinetics, equilibrium, thermodynamic, and other adsorption properties of modified adsorbent towards tetracycline are further studied. The theoretical maximum of adsorption capacity calculated by Langmuir model is 196.4 mg g^-1, and the kinetics of adsorption fits pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption of tetracycline on the adsorbent is feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic. The properties of synthesized composite material are stable; the yield of Ce/Mn/Al₂O₃ adsorbent can keep higher than 95% even after five adsorption/regeneration cycles. This research provides another perspective on the design and regeneration of adsorbent, which focus on reducing the secondary pollution during adsorbent regeneration process.

Transformation and utilization of slowly biodegradable organic matters in biological sewage treatment of anaerobic anoxic oxic systems

This study examined the distribution of carbon sources in two anaerobic anoxic oxic (AAO) sewage treatment plants in Xi'an and investigated the transformation characteristics and utilization potential of slowly biodegradable organic matters (SBOM). Results indicated under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, SBOM could be transformed at a rate of 65% in 8h into more readily biologically utilizable substrates such as volatile fatty acids (VFAs), polysaccharides and proteins. Additionally, non-biodegradable humus-type substances which are difficult to biodegrade and readily accumulate, were also generated. These products could be further hydrolyzed to aldehyde and ketone compounds and then transformed into substances with significant oxygen-containing functional groups and utilized subsequently. The molecular weights of proteinoid substances had a wide distribution and tended to decrease over time. Long hours of microbial reaction increased the proportion of micromolecular substances. This particular increase generated significant bioavailability, which can greatly improve the efficiency of nitrogen removal.

Removal of tetracyclines from swine manure at full-scale activated sludge treatment plants

The purpose of this study was to investigate the fate of three tetracyclines (TCs), namely oxytetracycline (OTC), chlortetracycline (CTC) and doxycycline (DC) at two different full-scale swine manure-activated sludge treatment plants. Throughout treatment, OTC, CTC and DC were removed by 71-76%, 75-80% and 95%, respectively. Removal of these TCs under physical treatment was deniable. On the contrary, the flocculation-coagulation and the secondary clarification resulted in a relevant reduction of the concentration of these TCs.

Efficient nitrogen removal via simultaneous nitrification and denitrification in a penicillin wastewater biological treatment plant

Nitrogen-removal performance was investigated in a penicillin wastewater biological treatment plant (P-WWTP) reconstructed from a cyclic activated sludge system (CASS) tank designed for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND). Good performance was obtained during a 900-day operation period, as indicated by effluent chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN) and ammonia nitrogen (NH₃‒N) values of 318 ± 34, 28.7 ± 2.4 and<0.2 mg L⁻¹ when the influent COD, total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and NH₃‒N were 3089 ± 453, 251.4 ± 26.5 and 124.8 ± 26.8 mg L⁻¹, respectively. Nitrification and denitrification occurred at different spaces, that is, 71.4% of TN removal occurred in the first 40% of the aeration tank, while 68.8% of the TKN removal occurred in 40-100% of the aeration tank. Sufficient easily biodegradable organics (EBO) in wastewater were key to the occurrence of SND. The denitrification rate under aeration conditions was 10.7 mg N g VSS⁻¹ h⁻¹ when EBO were sufficient, but 0.98 mg N g VSS⁻¹ h⁻¹ when EBO were completely degraded. Nitrification primarily occurred in the rear of the aeration tank owing to the competition for oxygen between carbonaceous oxidation and nitrification. The nitrification rate was only 7.13 mg NOD g VSS⁻¹ h⁻¹ at the beginning of the reaction, but 14.7 mg NOD g VSS⁻¹ h⁻¹ when EBO were completely degraded. These results will facilitate the improvement of nitrogen removal by existing WWTPs.
