Due to the special property of food waste (FW), anaerobic digestion of food waste is facing many challenges like foaming, acidification, ammonia nitrogen and (NH4+-N) inhibition which resulted in a low biogas yield. A better understanding on the problems exiting in the FW anaerobic digestion would enhance the bio-energy recovery and increase the stable operation. Meanwhile, to overcome the bottle necks, pretreatment, co-digestion and additives is proposed as well as the solutions to improve biogas yield in FW digestion system. At last, future research directions regarding FW anaerobic digestion were proposed.

Effect of ultrasonic and electrokinetic post-treatments on methane yield and viscosity of agricultural digestate

The impact of post-treatment of digestate prior to its recirculation to the digester has been evaluated with industrial-scale ultrasonication and electrokinetic treatment units. Residual methane yields of untreated digestate samples from four biogas plants varied between 99 and 134 ml/g of volatile solids (after 97 days of digestion). At the tested conditions (1.90-7.60 kWh/t for ultrasonication and 4.37-6.06 kWh/t for electrokinetic disintegration), no significant increase in methane yields were obtained. Increases in maximum methane production rates of up to 42% were observed in samples from one of the biogas plants, resulting in net energy gains between 1.06 and 7.04 kWh/t (after 26 and 66 days of digestion). Both treatments significantly reduced digestate viscosities, especially of highly viscous samples. Lower viscosities could reduce the energy demand for pumping and stirring in the digester, enabling the potential for increased organic loading and increased methane production.

Ultrasonic Processing of Food Waste to Generate Value-Added Products

Ultrasonic processing has a great potential to transform waste from the food and agriculture industry into value-added products. In this review article, we discuss the use of ultrasound for the valorisation of food and agricultural waste. Ultrasonic processing is considered a green technology as compared to the conventional chemical extraction/processing methods. The influence of ultrasound pre-treatment on the soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), particle size, and cell wall content of food waste is first discussed. The use of ultrasonic processing to produce/extract bioactives such as oil, polyphenolic, polysaccharides, fatty acids, organic acids, protein, lipids, and enzymes is highlighted. Moreover, ultrasonic processing in bioenergy production from food waste such as green methane, hydrogen, biodiesel, and ethanol through anaerobic digestion is also reviewed. The conversion of waste oils into biofuels with the use of ultrasound is presented. The latest developments and future prospective on the use of ultrasound in developing energy-efficient methods to convert food and agricultural waste into value-added products are summarised.

Microwave Pre-Treatment of Model Food Waste to Produce Short Chain Organic Acids and Ethanol via Anaerobic Fermentation

As an alternative to conventional anaerobic digestion for methane production, anaerobic fermentation (AF) of organic matter can produce short chain organic acids (SCOAs) in a sustainable way. This study investigated the effect of microwave (MW) pre-treatment on the AF of model food waste to SCOAs and ethanol. The MW pre-treatment was investigated at three temperatures (120, 150 and 180 °C) and residence times (2, 5 and 8 min). The MW treatment gave a significant reduction in the pH and volatile suspended solids (VSS). The largest reduction in the VSS was 20%, indicating solubilisation of the organic matter. The latter was also confirmed by the increase, although it was not statistically significant, in the soluble chemical oxygen demand (COD) and soluble carbohydrates. In the fermentation batch tests, the total product yield was higher (17.5% COD COD−1) than for the untreated substrate (11.1% COD COD−1). An electricity price of GBP 0.06 kWh−1 would correspond to the market value of the additional SCOAs produced with the pre-treated substrate. Although this price is lower than the current business price of electricity in the UK, the MW pre-treatment could become economically feasible with scale-up effects and by using free excess electricity coming from renewable resources.

Anaerobic digestion of waste Tunisian date (Phoenix dactylifera L.): effect of biochemical composition of pulp and seeds from six varieties

Large amounts of secondary date waste (pulp and seeds) are produced and discarded in Tunisia without proper valorisation methods. To study the possibility of valorising different varieties of Tunisian date waste (pulp and seeds) via anaerobic digestion, batch biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests were carried out under mesophilic temperature. The bio-methane production curves were fitted to the model of modified Gompertz in search of the kinetic parameters. The bio-chemical characterisation of the substrates from different varieties (total and volatile solids, COD and contents in carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, polyphenols) was realised. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to investigate the correlations between the model parameters and biochemical variables. Results show that the biochemical compositions of date pulp and seeds strongly depend on the varieties. The BMP are in the range of 0.295-0.345 and 0.267-0.327 Nm³ CH₄·kg COD^-1 for pulp and seeds respectively, resulting from the significant biochemical variance among the varieties. The BMP of date seeds was significantly correlated with their VS/TS ratio, carbohydrate and protein contents (p < 0.05). For the pulp, significant correlation was found between BMP, carbohydrate and lipid contents. PCA shows that certain varieties (like pulp and seeds of Deglet Nour and seeds of Bejou) are most suitable for being valorised by anaerobic digestion. The most suitable date varieties for this innovative approach were revealed. This research provided useful knowledge for bioconversion of waste date pulp and seeds to biomass energy.

Improvement of Biomethane Production from Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW) through Alkaline Hydrogen Peroxide (AHP) Pretreatment

The organic fraction resulting from the separate collection of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) is an abundant residue exploitable for biofuel production. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is one of the most attractive technologies for the treatment of organic wastes thanks to the generation of biogas with a high methane content. However, because of its complex composition, the direct digestion of OFMSW can be less effective. To overcome these difficulties, many pretreatments are under development. In this work, the efficacy of alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) oxidation was assessed for the first time as a pretreatment of OFMSW to enhance its anaerobic biodegradability. In this regard, many AHP batch tests were executed at pH 9 and by changing the peroxide dosages up to 1 gH2O2/gCOD, under room temperature and pressure conditions. Afterwards, biomethane potential tests (BMP) were conducted to evaluate the performance of anaerobic digestion both on raw and pretreated OFMSW. The pretreatment tests demonstrated that AHP induces only a weak reduction in the organic load, reaching a maximum COD removal of about 28%. On the other hand, notable productions of volatile fatty acids (VFA) were found. In fact, by applying a peroxide dose of just 0.025 gH2O2/gCOD, there was a doubling in VFA concentration, which increased by five times with the highest H2O2 amount. These results indicate that AHP mainly causes the conversion of complex organic substrates into easily degradable compounds. This conversion made it possible to achieve much better performance during the BMP tests conducted with the pretreated waste compared to that carried out on fresh OFMSW. Indeed, a low methane production of just 37.06 mLCH4/gTS was detected on raw OFMSW. The cumulated CH4 production in the pretreated samples increased in response to the increase in H2O2 dosage applied during AHP. Maximum specific productions of about 463.7 mLCH4/gTS and 0.31 LCH4/gCODremoved were calculated on mixtures subjected to AHP. On these samples, the satisfactory evolution of AD was confirmed by the process parameters calculated by modeling the cumulated CH4 curves through a new proposed formulation of the Gompertz equation.

Strategies to boost anaerobic digestion performance of cow manure: Laboratory achievements and their full-scale application potential

Cow manure represents a surplus manure waste in agricultural food sectors, which requires proper disposal. Anaerobic digestion, in this regard, has raised global interest owing to its apparent environmental benefits, including simultaneous waste diminishment and renewable energy generation. However, dedicated intensifications are necessary to promote the degradation of recalcitrant lignocellulosic components of cow manure. Hence, this manuscript presents a review of how to exploit cow manure in anaerobic digestion through different incentives extensively at lab-scale and full-scale. These strategies comprise 1) co-digestion; 2) pretreatment; 3) introduction of additives (trace metals, carbon-based materials, low-cost composites, nanomaterials, and microbial cultures); 4) innovative systems (bio-electrochemical fields and laser irradiation). Results imply that co-digestion and pretreatment approaches gain the predominance on promoting the digestion performance of cow manure. Particularly, for the co-digestion scenario, the selection of lignin-poor co-substrate is highlighted to produce maximum synergy and pronounced removal of lignocellulosic compounds of cow manure. Mechanical, thermal, and biological (composting) pretreatments generate mild improvement at laboratory-scale and are proved applicable in full-scale facilities. It is noteworthy that the introduction of additives (Fe-based nanomaterials, carbon-based materials, and composites) is acquiring more attention and shows promising full-scale application potential. Finally, bio-electrochemical fields stand out in laboratory trials and may serve as future reactor modules in agricultural anaerobic digestion installations treating cow manure.

Intensifying the biogas production from food waste using ultrasound: Understanding into effect of operating parameters

The present work depicts the novel approach of using ultrasound (US) induced cavitation for feedstock pretreatment with an objective of improving the anaerobic digestion (AD) process for biogas production. Initially the critical analysis of literature based on US for improving the biogas production has been presented briefly followed by study on use of US in pretreatment of food waste (FW) as well as during AD to quantify the intensification in the biogas production. Effect of different operating parameters for pretreatment such as irradiation time (over the range 2-14 min), power density (0.2-1 W/mL), duty cycle (20-80%) and substrate loading (3-11%w/v) has been investigated. Highest increase in soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) with final value as 18500 mg/L (±20) (increase of 61.5%) was obtained at optimum treatment conditions of 10 min as irradiation time, 0.4 W/mL as power density, 60% as duty cycle and 7% w/v as the substrate loading. Pretreated FW was further subjected to low intensity US assisted AD process. Parameters optimized for biogas production were power (over the range of 100-200 W), irradiation time (5-15 min) and duty cycle (10-60%). Increased biogas production (almost two times) with 80% sCOD removal after 15 days was obtained at best conditions of 200 W as the US power (0.04 W/mL as power density), 5 min as the US irradiation time and 10% of US duty cycle while AD process without US resulted in only 48% sCOD removal within same time period. The work demonstrated the effective application of US in the pretreatment of feedstock and subsequent AD process giving much higher yield of biogas in shorter time.

Treatment of feces from beef cattle fed the enteric methane inhibitor 3-nitrooxypropanol

The study evaluated the residual effect of the known enteric methane inhibitor 3-nitrooxypropanol (3NOP) on anaerobic digestion of cattle feces (feces) in a CH₄ potential batch test and two consecutive runs of an anaerobic leach bed reactor at a solids retention time of 40 days. The feces used in this study were collected from beef cattle fed forage- (backgrounding) or grain- (finishing) based diets supplemented with 3NOP in feedlot and metabolism studies. The results showed that CH₄ yields were not significantly different from treatments using control feces and feces collected from cattle fed a diet supplemented with 3NOP in both CH₄ potential and leach bed studies. Spiking feces with 200 mg 3NOP kg^-1 dry matter decreased CH₄ production rate by 8.0-18.1% estimated from the Gompertz equation, increased the lag phase time (0.4-3.4 d) in all the treatments, while there was no significant difference in the overall CH₄ yield. Results from this study showed that 3NOP can be used as an effective enteric CH₄ inhibitor with no residual effect on anaerobic digestion.

A Review of the Role of Critical Parameters in the Design and Operation of Biogas Production Plants

Many operating parameters, individually or together, may influence the performance of anaerobic digestion towards biogas or digestate yield and quality maximization. The most preferred method of optimizing an anaerobic digestion plant often relies on how carefully the crucial parameters, such as pH, temperature, organic loading rate, hydraulic retention time, and pressure, are chosen. There is a large amount of literature available on optimization of anaerobic digestion; however, given the continued development and implementation of innovative technologies, together with the introduction of increasingly complex systems, it is necessary to update present knowledge on process parameters and their role on operational ranges and flexibilities in real-life anaerobic digestion system. Accordingly, the present review discusses the importance of the selection of operational parameters in existing technologies and their impact on biogas yield. Notably, the four broad areas of feedstock utilization (substrate, inoculum, codigestion and pretreatment), process condition (pH, temperature, pressure, and reactor design), reactor control (HRT and OLR) and inhibition (Ammonia and VFAs) are covered in this review. In addition, particular emphasis is placed on the most recent innovations that have been or may be implemented in current or future biogas plants.

Ultrasound-assisted biological conversion of biomass and waste materials to biofuels: A review

Ultrasound irradiation has been gaining increasing interests over the years to assist biological conversion of lignocellulosic biomass and waste materials to biofuels. As such, this study reviewed the different effects of sonication on pre-treatment of lignocellulosic biomass and waste materials prior to biofuel production. The mechanisms of ultrasound irradiation as a pre-treatment technique were initially described and the impacts of sonication on disruption of lignocellulosic materials, alteration of the crystalline lattice structure of cellulose molecules, solubilisation of organic matter, reducing sugar production and enzymatic hydrolysis were then reviewed. Subsequently, the influences of ultrasound irradiation on bio-methane, bio-hydrogen and bio-ethanol production were re-evaluated, with most studies reporting enhanced biofuel production from anaerobic digestion or fermentation processes. Nonetheless, despite its positive impacts on biofuel production, sonication was found to be energetically inefficient based on the lab-scale studies reviewed. To conclude, this study reviewed some of the challenges of ultrasound irradiation for enhanced biofuel production while outlining some areas for further research.
