Separation efficiency of different solid-liquid separation technologies for slurry and gas emissions of liquid and solid fractions: A meta-analysis

Solid-liquid separation (SLS) technology is widely used in the slurry management in animal farms. This study conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of 45 published articles to evaluate the differences in separation efficiencies (SE_X-SF) of various SLSs and the changes of gas emissions before and after the separation during on-farm slurry storage. The results indicated that the SE_X-SF of the untreated raw slurry and acidified slurry were consistently greater than those of the digested slurry, and centrifugation resulted in greater SE_X-SF than the other mechanical methods. Both measured and simulated data showed that the centrifuge technology had greater reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions relative to the screw press (56.1-58.0% vs. 38.9-40.2% for untreated slurry, and 29.7-30.2% vs. 22.5-23.2% for digested slurry), mainly due to CH₄ reduction. Additionally, we identify the need for further assessment of the environmental risks that are associated with SLSs for the development of an optimal slurry management chain.

Nutrient Reduction of Dairy Manure Through Solid-Liquid Separation with Flocculation and Subsequent Microalgal Treatment

High concentrations of dairy operations in Southern Idaho have brought up big challenges for proper manure management to alleviate the eutrophication stress. In order to explore more technologies confronting the high nutrient load in dairy manure, a sequential process combining enhanced solid-liquid separation through flocculation-centrifuge and the subsequent microalgal growth in the liquid part was studied in this study. Solid-liquid separation by flocculation-centrifuge process, using a natural flocculant chitosan and a flocculation aid kaolin, was optimized through response surface methodology (RSM) technique using central composite design (CCD) method. Under the optimal flocculation-centrifuge pretreatment, i.e., the maximal total suspended solid (turbidity) removal group, turbidity, COD, TKN, and TP have been removed by 92.7%, 72.6%, 58.7%, and 43.0%, respectively. Applying 2-fold dilution, the supernatant from this treatment was further used for microalgae Chlorella vulgaris cultivation. COD, TKN, and TP were further reduced by 82.2%, 90.1%, and 83.4%, respectively. Turbidity was largely removed from the original dairy manure, providing a relatively clear solution that became suitable for photo-mixotrophic culture of microalgae.

Coagulation-flocculation process applied to wastewaters generated in hydrocarbon-contaminated soil washing: Interactions among coagulant and flocculant concentrations and pH value

Wastewater produced in the contaminated soil washing was treated by means of coagulation-flocculation (CF) process. The wastewater contained petroleum hydrocarbons, a surfactant, i.e., sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as well as salts, brownish organic matter and other constituents that were lixiviated from the soil during the washing process. The main goal of this work was to develop a process for treating the wastewaters generated when washing hydrocarbon-contaminated soils in such a way that it could be recycled to the washing process, and also be disposed at the end of the process properly. A second objective was to study the relationship among the coagulant and flocculant doses and the pH at which the CF process is developed, for systems where methylene blue active substances (MBAS) as well as oil and greases were present. The results for the selection of the right coagulant and flocculant type and dose, the optimum pH value for the CF process and the interactions among the three parameters are detailed along this work. The best coagulant and flocculant were FeCl(3) and Tecnifloc 998 at doses of 4,000 and 1 mg/L, correspondingly at pH of 5. These conditions gave color, turbidity, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and conductivity removals of 99.8, 99.6, 97.1 and 35%, respectively. It was concluded that it is feasible to treat the wastewaters generated in the contaminated soil washing process through CF process, and therefore, wastewaters could be recycled to the washing process or disposed to drainage.
