A qualitative investigation of adaptation in older individuals with multiple sclerosis

Religious meaning system and life satisfaction: the mediating role of meaning in life among Polish people with multiple sclerosis

Introduction

The complexity of the associations between religiosity and indicators of well-being suggests the presence of a mediating mechanism. Previous studies indicate that religion may influence subjective well-being because it helps to find meaning and purpose. Therefore, the aim of our study was to examine the mediating role of the presence and search dimensions of meaning in life in the relationship between religious meaning system and life satisfaction in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS).

Methods

This cross-sectional study included 600 MS patients recruited from Poland who completed the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), the Religious Meaning System Questionnaire (RMS) and the Meaning in Life Questionnaire (MLQ). Model 6 of Hayes PROCESS was used to test the hypotheses.

Results

The results of our research indicate that there was a significant indirect effect of religious meaning system on life satisfaction through the presence of meaning in life. The specific indirect effect of religious meaning system on life satisfaction through searching for meaning in life was not significant.

Discussion

The results of our study are relevant because they show that religion as a meaning system is positively related to the presence of meaning in life, which in turn positively predicts life satisfaction. This is particularly important in the case of incurable illness, where finding meaning in life is one of the natural stages of adaptation. By incorporating these findings into mental health practice, professionals can enhance the holistic well-being of people coping with MS and contribute to a more comprehensive and effective approach to mental health care.

Unfolding biographies-a participatory narrative study on how older adults with multiple sclerosis make sense of and manage their everyday lives

BACKGROUND

Today, public health research on later life, including the literature on aging with multiple sclerosis, is often centered on aging as a biological phenomenon. By applying a participatory narrative approach, this study conveys how studying biographical aging provides important insights into the elements of aging that people find relevant and meaningful. Based on narratives told by older adults living with multiple sclerosis, we explore how sensemaking unfolds and shapes the management of later life with a chronic and progressive disease.

METHODS

Twenty-four older adults (aged 65 years or older) living with multiple sclerosis in Denmark were engaged in taking photographs of their everyday lives and unfold the stories framed in their photographs in subsequent narrative interviews. Interview data were analyzed using a thematic narrative analysis. Aligned with the narrative approach, the findings of the analysis are presented using five cases chosen because they provide insight into the general patterns and themes identified across the narratives of the 24 participants.

RESULTS

Based on their photographs, the participants narrated stories centered around what they perceived as meaningful activities and social identity when aging with a progressive disease. Three themes emerged from the analysis in relation to how participants made sense of and managed aging with multiple sclerosis: 1) a life woven by non-detachable life experiences, 2) envisioning the future and 3) challenging life circumstances.

CONCLUSION

The findings of the study highlight that aging with multiple sclerosis is not only a biological phenomenon but also something nested in people's biographies. How people make sense of and manage their everyday lives is shaped by strategies from all parts of their lives-past, present and future. This understanding of later life with multiple sclerosis may enhance the care offered to older adults living with multiple sclerosis if greater emphasis is placed on the exploration of their narratives and the things they find meaningful.

‶You look really good, I don't know why you came here″: persons with multiple sclerosis´ perspectives on social support

The aim of this qualitative study is to gain insight into the perspectives of persons with multiple sclerosis on social support. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eleven persons with multiple sclerosis. The results on informal support for persons with multiple sclerosis reveal perceived support and the lack of support from different persons. The results on formal support for persons with multiple sclerosis show perceived support from healthcare professionals, professionals working outside healthcare and social care systems, and associations of persons with MS, but also inadequate support from healthcare professionals and social workers. Close emotional relationship, empathy, knowledge and understanding are the basis for provision of all types of support from informal support system, while perceived support from formal support system is based on professionals´ empathy, their professionalism and knowledge. Persons with multiple sclerosis need accurate and timely emotional, informational, practical and financial support.

A systematic review of self-concept change in multiple sclerosis

Self-concept or sense of self is often altered in the context of neurological illness. Yet, these core aspects of subjective experience are poorly understood for people with multiple sclerosis (MS). This systematic review aimed to synthesize the findings of quantitative and qualitative studies investigating self-concept in MS. PsycINFO, MEDLINE (PubMed), CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science were last systematically searched in May 2021, with the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool and Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualiatative Research used to appraise the quality of the eligible articles. Articles were included if they measured or explored self-concept in MS populations, were published in English and peer-reviewed. A total of 30 studies (11 quantitative, 19 qualitative) were identified. Quantitative studies were synthesized using a narrative approach, with results suggesting that MS is associated with some degree of self-concept change. Qualitative studies were synthesized using thematic synthesis, with results illustrating a complex process of self-concept change that is catalyzed by MS-related events and characterized by varying degrees of resistance to, or acknowledgement of, such changes. Future prospective longitudinal studies are needed to characterize the nature of self-concept change in MS using validated tools that measure relevant aspects of self-concept for the MS population.

"Kicking and Screaming" or "Gracefully Conceding": Creative Nonfiction Stories of Aging With Multiple Sclerosis

Aging with multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex phenomenon. Some individuals report physical and cognitive dysfunctions regarding these combined experiences, whereas others report perceived improvements in quality of life. Beyond this, little is known regarding how people make sense of, and come to embody, negative or positive experiences of MS. Thus, our objectives were to (a) explore how people made sense of aging with MS and (b) present this in an artful, engaging, transformative way. To achieve this, we conducted 40 semi-structured interviews with older adults who had MS, analyzed data using pluralistic narrative analyses, and presented results through two creative nonfictions. We detail our process of creating the nonfictions before presenting the different stories of aging with MS, namely "Kicking and Screaming" and "Gracefully Conceding." We then offer recommendations and implications for using these stories as knowledge translation devices, and further critique the limitations of these stories in practice.

The experience and meaning of aging with multiple sclerosis: An existential phenomenological approach

OBJECTIVES

Over the past 3 decades there have been significant advances in the development of pharmaceutical and rehabilitative treatments for persons with multiple sclerosis (MS), such that life expectancy is continuing to increase. Whilst these advancements are exciting, there are also concerns and unknowns regarding what it is like to age with MS. The objectives of this research were to explore the lived experiences and meaning of aging in conjunction with having MS.

METHODS

Semi-structured interviews with 40 persons with MS over 60 years were conducted. Thereafter data were subject to an existential phenomenological analysis.

RESULTS

Four different ways were discussed with regards to embodied experiences of aging with MS: aging makes MS worse; MS makes aging worse; aging makes MS better; and MS makes aging better.

DISCUSSION

This research highlighted the complexity of aging with MS and the various of ways persons over 60 with MS experience and interpret this phenomenon.

Anticipatory coping: how women deal with the hassles of living with multiple sclerosis

Background: People living with MS confront a variety of changes and challenges that need to cope with. The aim of this study was to explore the coping patterns related to the impact of MS on people's lives including; daily, family, and social functions.Methods: A constructivist grounded theory approach was taken. A purposive sample of 16 women living with MS were recruited from a MS clinic at a teaching hospital in the north of Iran. Participants completed 22 semi-structured interviews. The interviews were digitally recorded, transcribed and analyzed using initial, focused and theoretical coding.Results: Participants described coping with a certain pattern that reflected direction and orientation of coping. Anticipating outcomes related to disease, self or others led the participants to plan ahead to deal with the challenges of living with MS. Indeed, they develop and employed anticipatory coping in disease-directed, self-directed and other-directed. Then they focused on the orientation of coping patterns, which involved actions, reactions, and interactions in order to manage anticipated outcomes.Conclusion: The majority of participants used coping pattern that were anticipatory rather than a reactionary to past or present challenges. The results highlight the value of engaging with people with MS in order to identify ways that they cope with the impact of this condition. This is an important distinction and one that health professionals not only need to be aware of but highlights the value of engaging with people with MS in this frame to develop informed and positive approaches to anticipated outcomes and in responding to anticipated changes and challenges.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONPeople develop the pattern of anticipatory coping in order to deal with issues related to the disease, self and others that they anticipate will happen in order to manage potential dysfunctions related to living with multiple sclerosis.People living with MS employ anticipatory coping based on existing and anticipated abilities and disabilities in order to maintain normality for as long as possible in daily, family and social activities.Proactive approaches to dealing with MS can be promoted in a number of ways, for example through support groups, social media or the development of networks with the aim of providing peer support and education.Developing rehabilitation programmes that reflect individual responses to living with MS would improve the ability of healthcare systems to meet clients' needs related to adjusting to living with a chronic condition.

Independent outdoor mobility of persons with multiple sclerosis - A systematic review

BACKGROUND

Multiple sclerosis (MS) can manifest itself in many ways, all of which can affect the independent outdoor mobility of persons with MS (pwMS). In most studies, mobility of pwMS is defined by the ability to walk. However, mobility comprises more than walking alone. This systematic review provides an overview of the literature on several types of independent outdoor mobility of pwMS. We aimed to identify which specific factors may influence outdoor mobility and how the lives of pwMS may be affected by a reduced mobility.

METHODS

A systematic literature search was performed, using three databases (PubMed, PsychInfo and Web of Science). Studies had to describe a group of pwMS sclerosis and had to concern some type of mobility other than walking.

RESULTS

The 57 studies that fulfilled the criteria included in total 10,394 pwMS and in addition, 95,300 pwMS in separate prevalence study. These studies showed that pwMS as a group have a decreased fitness to drive, make use of a wheelchair or mobility scooter more often and have difficulties making use of public transport. Mobility problems especially occur in patients with cognitive problems, secondary progressive MS or high disability scores.

CONCLUSIONS

The reduced mobility may prevent pwMS participating in society. However, few studies investigating interventions or rehabilitation options to improve mobility were found in the existing literature, highlighting an until now under recognised unmet need.

Beyond Disease: Happiness, Goals, and Meanings among Persons with Multiple Sclerosis and Their Caregivers

The experience of persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) and their caregivers is usually investigated in terms of emotional distress and health-related quality of life, while well-being indicators remain largely underexplored. In addition, findings are often interpreted from the clinical perspective, neglecting socio-cultural aspects that may crucially contribute to individuals' functioning. At the methodological level, most studies rely on scaled instruments, not allowing participants to freely express their needs and resources. Based on the bio-psycho-social perspective endorsed by the International Classification of Functioning, well-being indicators were investigated among 62 persons with MS (PwMS), their 62 caregivers and two control groups, matched by age and gender. Participants completed the Positive Affect Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), and the Eudaimonic and Hedonic Happiness Investigation instrument (EHHI). EHHI provides information on participants' happiness, goals and meanings through scaled and open-ended questions, contextualized within major life domains. No relevant differences emerged among PwMS and caregivers, compared with the respective control groups, as concerns life domains associated with happiness, goals and meaning. Participants across groups prominently mentioned family, highlighting its intrinsic value and its relevance as a sharing context; health did not represent a major theme for PwMS; community, society and religion/spirituality issues were substantially neglected by all participants. PwMS and caregivers reported lower levels of positive affect than their control groups, while no substantial differences emerged for negative affect, happiness and meaningfulness levels in life and across most domains. Results suggest that the experience of MS is associated with well-being in relevant life domains, such as family and close relationships. Although PwMS and caregivers identified a lower number of goals and meaning-related opportunities compared to control groups, they showed a positive adjustment to disease through the development of personal and family resources. These assets are often undervalued by health professionals and social institutions, while they could be fruitfully exploited through the active involvement of PwMS and their families as expert and exemplary informants in initiatives aimed at promoting the well-being of individuals and communities

Spirituality in Rehabilitation Counseling of Adults With Physical Disabilities: Views of Practitioners Across Countries

The purpose of the study is to understand the views of practitioners across countries, on spirituality for rehabilitation counseling of adults with congenital and acquired disabilities. A survey of 1,269 practitioners in the field of disability across 15 countries was conducted. Results showed that practitioners had a favorable view of spirituality. Logistic regression results highlight several cross-country nuances in practitioners’ views toward spirituality for rehabilitation counseling, and more so, differentials in terms of adults with congenital and acquired physical disabilities. Practitioners who focused on a client-centered approach vis-à-vis those who diversified also into macro-level work of networking and advocacy, and specifically those who had high self-reported spirituality, proposed that for adults with congenital physical disabilities, spirituality enabled living with disabilities, as against a rationalization and justification of the disability. They favored mindfulness techniques as the modes of working with the clients and reported that by cultivating relational consciousness, spirituality enabled meeting the social goal of rehabilitation counseling. Furthermore, practitioners from affluent nations placed a premium on the deconstructing potential of spirituality and its facilitative role in enabling the clients themselves, and significant others, to transcend the ability/disability binary. The study foregrounds the importance of spiritually sensitive approaches in rehabilitation counseling.

Ecological Momentary Assessment of Pain, Fatigue, Depressive, and Cognitive Symptoms Reveals Significant Daily Variability in Multiple Sclerosis

OBJECTIVE

To describe the daily variability and patterns of pain, fatigue, depressed mood, and cognitive function in persons with multiple sclerosis (MS).

DESIGN

Repeated-measures observational study of 7 consecutive days of home monitoring, including ecological momentary assessment (EMA) of symptoms. Multilevel mixed models were used to analyze data.

SETTING

General community.

PARTICIPANTS

Ambulatory adults (N=107) with MS recruited through the University of Michigan and surrounding community.

INTERVENTIONS

Not applicable.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE

EMA measures of pain, fatigue, depressed mood, and cognitive function rated on a 0 to 10 scale, collected 5 times a day for 7 days.

RESULTS

Cognitive function and depressed mood exhibited more stable within-person patterns than pain and fatigue, which varied considerably within person. All symptoms increased in intensity across the day (all P<.02), with fatigue showing the most substantial increase. Notably, this diurnal increase varied by sex and age; women showed a continuous increase from wake to bedtime, whereas fatigue plateaued after 7 pm for men (wake-bed B=1.04, P=.004). For the oldest subgroup, diurnal increases were concentrated to the middle of the day compared with younger subgroups, which showed an earlier onset of fatigue increase and sustained increases until bed time (wake-3 pm B=.04, P=.01; wake-7 pm B=.03, P=.02). Diurnal patterns of cognitive function varied by education; those with advanced college degrees showed a more stable pattern across the day, with significant differences compared with those with bachelor-level degrees in the evening (wake-7 pm B=-.47, P=.02; wake-bed B=-.45, P=.04).

CONCLUSIONS

Findings suggest that chronic symptoms in MS are not static, even over a short time frame; rather, symptoms-fatigue and pain in particular-vary dynamically across and within days. Incorporation of EMA methods should be considered in the assessment of these chronic MS symptoms to enhance assessment and treatment strategies.

Cerebellar ataxia and intrathecal baclofen therapy: Focus on patients´ experiences

Elucidating patients´ experiences of living with chronic progressive hereditary ataxia and the symptomatic treatment with intrathecal baclofen (ITB) is the objective of the current study. A multicenter qualitative study with four patients included due to the rare combination of hereditary ataxia and ITB therapy was designed to elucidate participants’ experiences through semi-structured interviews. The transcribed text was analyzed according to content analysis guidelines. Overall we identified living in the present/ taking one day at a time as the main theme covering the following categories: 1) Uncertainty about the future as a consequence of living with a hereditary disease; The disease; 2) Impact on life as a whole, 3) Influence on personal life in terms of feeling forced to terminate employment, 4) Limiting daily activities, and 5) ITB therapy, advantages, and disadvantages. Uncertainty about the future was the category that affected participants’ personal life, employment, and daily activities. The participants’ experience of receiving ITB therapy was expressed in terms of improved quality of life due to better body position and movement as well as better sleep and pain relief.

Healthy Aging from the Perspectives of 683 Older People with Multiple Sclerosis

Purpose. The aim of this study was to determine what factors most greatly contributed to healthy aging with multiple sclerosis (MS) from the perspective of a large sample of older people with MS. Design and Methods. Participants (n = 683; >55 years of age with symptoms >20 years) provided answers to an open-ended question regarding healthy aging and were categorized into three groups, 55–64 (young), 65–74 (middle), and 75 and over (oldest old). Sociodemographic actors were compared using ANOVA. Two independent raters used the framework method of analyzing qualitative data. Results. Participants averaged 64 years of age (±6.2) with MS symptoms for 32.9 years (±9.4). 531 participants were female (78%). The majority of participants lived in their own home (n = 657) with a spouse or partner (n = 483). Participants described seven themes: social connections, attitude and outlook on life, lifestyle choices and habits, health care system, spirituality and religion, independence, and finances. These themes had two shared characteristics, multidimensionality and interdependence. Implications. Learning from the experiences of older adults with MS can help young and middle aged people with MS plan to age in their own homes and communities. Our data suggests that older people with MS prioritize factors that are modifiable through targeted self-management strategies.

Utilized Resources of Hope, Orientation, and Inspiration in Life of Persons with Multiple Sclerosis and Their Association with Life Satisfaction, Adaptive Coping Strategies, and Spirituality

In a cross-sectional survey among 213 patients with multiple sclerosis, we intended to analyze their resources of hope, orientation, and inspiration in life, and how these resources are related to health-associated variables, adaptive coping strategies, and life satisfaction. Resources were categorized as Faith (10 %), Family (22 %), Other sources (16 %), and No answer (53 %). These non-respondents were predominantly neither religious nor spiritual (70 % R-S-). Although R-S- persons are a heterogeneous group with varying existential interest, they did not significantly differ from their spiritual/religious counterparts with respect to physical and mental health or life satisfaction, but for an adaptive Reappraisal strategy and Gratitude/Awe.

Subjective Cognitive Decline from a Phenomenological Perspective: A Review of the Qualitative Literature

BACKGROUND

Subjective cognitive decline is related to greater risk of dementia and biological markers of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but researchers are yet to characterize the phenomenological perspective of cognitive decline in those with and without a diagnosis of AD.

OBJECTIVE

To collate and synthesize studies measuring the subjective experience of cognitive change or decline in healthy older adults and those with mild cognitive impairment and AD.

METHODS

We reviewed 58 peer-reviewed articles that were found to directly or indirectly refer to the subjective experience of cognitive decline.

RESULTS

We extracted eight central themes, dealing with cognitive changes experienced by each diagnostic group, and also related to issues of changing self-identity, the causal attribution of cognitive decline, the anxiety and concern related to perceived decline, the negative perceptions attached to a diagnosis of dementia, changing levels of insight, and perception of well-being in aging.

CONCLUSION

This review is the first step toward characterizing phenomenological profiles of cognitive change in both non-demented and demented older adults. Developing a clearer understanding of subjective cognitive decline, particularly at the earliest stages of AD, will augment the sensitivity of detection of individuals at greater risk of future dementia.

Communicative participation restrictions in multiple sclerosis: associated variables and correlation with social functioning

Individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) are at risk for communication problems that may restrict their ability to take participation in important life roles such as maintenance of relationships, work, or household management. The aim of this project is to examine selected demographic and symptom-related variables that may contribute to participation restrictions. This examination is intended to aid clinicians in predicting who might be at risk for such restrictions and what variables may be targeted in interventions. Community-dwelling adults with MS (n=216) completed a survey either online or using paper forms. The survey included the 46-item version of the Communicative Participation Item Bank, demographics (age, sex, living situation, employment status, education, and time since onset of diagnosis of MS), and self-reported symptom-related variables (physical activity, emotional problems, fatigue, pain, speech severity, and cognitive/communication skills). In order to identify predictors of restrictions in communicative participation, these variables were entered into a backwards stepwise multiple linear regression analysis. Five variables (cognitive/communication skills, speech severity, speech usage, physical activity, and education) were statistically significant predictors of communication participation. In order to examine the relationship of communicative participation and social role variables, bivariate Spearman correlations were conducted. Results suggest only a fair to moderate relationship between communicative participation and measures of social roles. Communicative participation is a complex construct associated with a number of self-reported variables. Clinicians should be alert to risk factors for reduced communicative participation including reduced cognitive and speech skills, lower levels of speech usage, limitations in physical activities and higher levels of education.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The reader will be able to: (a) describe the factors that may restrict participation in individuals with multiple sclerosis; (b) list measures of social functioning that may be pertinent in adults with multiple sclerosis; (c) discuss factors that can be used to predict communicative participation in multiple sclerosis.

Faith as a resource in patients with multiple sclerosis is associated with a positive interpretation of illness and experience of gratitude/awe

The aim of this cross-sectional anonymous survey with standardized questionnaires was to investigate which resources to cope were used by patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). We focussed on patients' conviction that their faith might be a strong hold in difficult times and on their engagement in different forms of spirituality. Consecutively 213 German patients (75% women; mean age 43 ± 11 years) were enrolled. Fifty-five percent regarded themselves as neither religious nor spiritual (R-S-), while 31% describe themselves as religious. For 29%, faith was a strong hold in difficult times. This resource was neither related to patients' EDSS scores, and life affections, fatigue, negative mood states, life satisfaction nor to Positive attitudes. Instead it was moderately associated with a Reappraisal strategy (i.e., and positive interpretation of illness) and experience of gratitude/awe. Compared to spiritual/religious patients, R-S- individuals had significantly (P < .0001) lower Reappraisal scores and lower engagement in specific forms of spiritual practices. The ability to reflect on what is essential in life, to appreciate and value life, and also the conviction that illness may have meaning and could be regarded as a chance for development was low in R-S- individuals which either may have no specific interest or are less willing to reflect these issues.

Functioning and disability in multiple sclerosis from the patient perspective

Multiple sclerosis (MS) has a great impact on functioning and disability. The perspective of those who experience the health problem has to be taken into account to obtain an in-depth understanding of functioning and disability. The objective was to describe the areas of functioning and disability and relevant contextual factors in MS from the patient perspective. A qualitative study using focus group methodology was performed. The sample size was determined by saturation. The focus groups were digitally recorded and transcribed verbatim. The meaning condensation procedure was used for data analysis. Identified concepts were linked to International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) categories according to established linking rules. Six focus groups with a total of 27 participants were performed. In total, 1327 concepts were identified and linked to 106 ICF categories of the ICF components Body Functions, Activities and Participation and Environmental Factors. This qualitative study reports on the impact of MS on functioning and disability from the patient perspective. The participants in this study provided information about all physical aspects and areas of daily life affected by the disease, as well as the environmental factors influencing their lives.

Factors influencing healthy aging with multiple sclerosis: a qualitative study

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to describe the factors influencing healthy aging from the perspective of the older person with multiple sclerosis (MS) in order to build curricula for MS self-management programs.

METHOD

We sourced participants, older than 55 years with MS for more than 20 years, from a database of MS clinic and outpatient rehabilitation visits. Recruitment continued until data saturation was reached (n = 18). Semi-structured interviews explored perspectives on aging and health and lifestyle habits. Demographic, lifestyle and perceived health status information was also gathered. We analyzed the transcribed text for themes and theme relationships.

RESULTS

Work and social engagement, effective and accessible health care, healthy lifestyle habits, and maintaining independence at home were found to be critical proximal factors for healthy aging. The presence of financial flexibility, social support, cognitive and mental health, and resilience provided a supporting foundation to these critical proximal factors. These factors comprised a two-tiered model of healthy aging with MS.

CONCLUSIONS

This two-tiered conceptual model of health aging, based on the perspectives of older persons with MS, provides a potential framework for the development of MS self-management program curricula aimed at optimizing quality of life. Further empirical testing may validate its utility in predicting healthy aging with MS.

Pathways of change experienced by people aging with disability: a focus group study

PURPOSE

To examine the issues related to aging with disability from the perspective of the person with the disabilities.

METHOD

Twelve community-dwelling adults with spinal cord injury (SCI), post-polio syndrome (PPS) or multiple sclerosis (MS) participated in focus groups where they were asked open-ended questions about changes related to aging with disability, accommodations made and perspectives on the future.

RESULTS

Results of qualitative analysis suggested five major themes related to aging with a disability: (1) Participant identity, including comments about how participants described themselves and their lives with a long-standing disability; (2) Physical pathways including comments about the progression of physical symptoms; (3) Psychosocial pathways, including descriptions of adaptations to disability, the development of emotional well-being and strategies to deal with disability; (4) Changing health care, reflecting improvement noted over time in health care services; and (5) Concerns about the future, including comments reflecting participant uncertainty about the potential course of disability.

CONCLUSIONS

The process of aging with disability was characterised by multiple pathways. Some, including positive psychosocial adjustment and medical advancements, were favourable, while others, including physical decline, were not. The co-existence of high quality of life in the presence of physical decline is consistent with a larger literature in older adults, and future research should focus on identifying aging factors that may contribute to the buffering the psychological impact of physical decline.

Aging with Long-term Physical Impairments: The Significance of Social Support

Cet article examine les situations de la vie et l’accès à la prise en charge sociale des personnes vivant dans des communautés, qui sont âgés de 50 à 65 ans, et qui ont vécu avec une déficience physique significative depuis plus de 15 ans. Les données ont été recueillies par le biais d’entretiens approfondis et semi-structurés avec huit hommes et femmes. Les conclusions suggèrent que faire façe à la dégradation à long terme peut être une expérience solitaire lorsqu’un individu ne dispose pas d’un réseau solide de la famille et/ou des amis à apporter le soutien émotionnel. Selon les participants, leurs expériences du vieillissment avec déficience à long terme ont été améliorées lorsqu’ils partagent les pensées, les sentiments et les problèmes avec d’autres. Les conclusions montrent également l’importance du genre concernant l’accès à l’assistance sociale, et indiquent l’importance d’utiliser des ententes subjectives pour déterminer le niveau de soutien social disponible aux individus. Plus généralement, les conclusions soulignent que les personnes qui vieillissent avec des déficiences plongent dans, et souhaitent entretenir, des relations réciproques.
