Abstract
Background Studies have shown that an antioxidant diet is a protective factor against migraine. However, the association between selenium, an important antioxidant consumed from the diet, and migraine has received little attention. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between dietary selenium intake with migraine, with particular interest in age differences. Methods This study based on cross-sectional data from people who took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 1999 and 2004. The multiple logistic regression model was applied to examine the association between selenium intake and migraine, and subgroup analyses were performed. Non-linear associations were explored with restricted cubic spline (RCS) models. Results The study included a total of 9,849 adults aged 20 years and older. Compared with individuals with lowest selenium intake Q1 (≤59.4 ug/day), the adjusted OR values for selenium intake and migraine in Q2 (59.41-82.70 ug/day), Q3 (82.71-106 ug/day), Q4 (106.01-143.16 ug/day), and Q5 (≥143.17 ug/day) were 0.82 (95% CI: 0.64-1.05), 0.99 (95% CI: 0.77-1.26), 0.74 (95% CI: 0.54-0.99), and 0.68 (95% CI: 0.48-0.97), respectively. Sensitivity analyses showed a robust association between them. Our findings also suggested an interaction between age and selenium intake (p for interaction = 0.04). Additionally, the relationship between selenium intake and migraine in adults with 20-50 years was L-shaped. The OR of developing migraine was 0.97 (95% CI: 0.94-0.98) in individuals with selenium intake ≥101.9 ug/day in adults with 20-50 years. Conclusion A higher dietary selenium intake is significantly associated with a decreased prevalence of migraine, and age can modify the association between them. Therefore, the present study indicate that an appropriate intake of selenium-rich foods in adults aged 20-50 years may prevent migraines.

Abstract
Background Carotenoids are well-established for their potent antioxidant properties; however, their potential association with severe headaches or migraines remains largely unexamined. This study was conducted to explore the relationship between serum carotenoid levels and the prevalence of severe headaches or migraines within the US population. Methods We utilized data from the 2001-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which comprised a total of 8,910 participants. Serum carotenoid levels-specifically α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lutein/zeaxanthin, and lycopene-were quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography. Migraine status was determined based on a questionnaire. The research methodologies employed included multivariate logistic regression, subgroup analysis, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models. Results The prevalence of migraines in the study population was 22.37%. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that serum concentrations of α-carotene (OR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.85-0.97), β-carotene (OR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.81-0.94), β-cryptoxanthin (OR = 0.83, 95% CI: 0.76-0.90), lutein/zeaxanthin (OR = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.67-0.85), and total carotenoids (OR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.70-0.90) were significantly inversely correlated with severe headaches or migraines; however, no significant association was found for lycopene levels. RCS analysis showed that β-cryptoxanthin had an L-shaped non-linear relationship with migraine prevalence at a threshold of approximately 9.392 μg/dL, while subgroup analyses confirmed the consistent inverse association between total serum carotenoid concentrations and migraine prevalence across various groups. Conclusion Serum concentrations of α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lutein/zeaxanthin, and total serum carotenoids were inversely correlated with the incidence of severe headaches or migraines in US adults. This evidence indicates that carotenoids may provide a protective effect against migraines; however, further investigation is warranted to substantiate these associations and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The field of dietary therapies for migraine has grown in popularity. Less research has been conducted to establish the relationship between migraine and the composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI), a crucial indicator for evaluating the overall combined effects of multiple dietary antioxidants. Therefore, this study addressed this gap based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. METHODS Multivariate logistic regression equations were used to investigate the relationship between CDAI and migraine, and smoothed-fitted curves were plotted. After a nonlinear relationship was discovered, the recursive algorithm and a two-stage linear regression model were employed to calculate the turning point. Additional stratified analyses were performed to explore differences between populations. RESULTS This study included a total of 9,190 participants aged 20 years old or older. A U-shaped association was observed between the CDAI and migraine, with an inflection point of 0.2. They were negatively correlated before the inflection point with OR of 0.93 (95% CI = 0.88-0.97) and positively correlated after the inflection point with OR of 1.04 (95% CI = 1.01-1.07). This U-shaped relationship persisted among people aged <60 and ≥60 years, women, and people with BMI <30 and ≥30. CONCLUSIONS We identified a U-shaped association between CDAI and migraine in the U.S. adult population. Further case-control studies and experimental research are needed to explore the underlying mechanisms of action.

Abstract
Background Excessive oxidative stress is one of the key pathophysiological mechanisms underlying migraine, and increasing antioxidant intake has proven to be an effective strategy for the prevention and improvement of migraine symptoms. To explore the relationship between the composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and the occurrence of migraine attacks. Methods Cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 1999-2004 were utilized. Logistic regression, stratified analysis, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were employed to investigate the association between CDAI and migraine attacks. Results A total of 8,137 adults aged ≥20 were enrolled, comprising 1,610 patients with migraine and 6,527 non-migraine individuals. After adjusting for all covariates, CDAI was negatively correlated with migraine. In the overall participants, compared with the CDAI Q1 (-5.83 to -2.14) group, the adjusted odds ratio (OR) for migraine in Q3 (-0.59 to 1.53) and Q4 (1.53-44.63) groups were 0.71 [95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.54-0.92, p = 0.011] and 0.64 (95% CI: 0.47-0.87, p = 0.005), respectively. After stratifying by age and gender, the protective effect was more pronounced in females aged 20-50, with adjusted OR for Q3 (-0.59 to 1.53) and Q4 (1.53-44.63) groups of 0.60 (95% CI: 0.40-0.90, p = 0.013) and 0.48 (95% CI: 0.30-0.78, p = 0.003), respectively. The RCS curve indicated a nonlinear relationship between CDAI and migraine in females aged 20-50, with a threshold of 0.006. Conclusion CDAI is negatively correlated with migraine attacks, and a higher CDAI may be an effective protective factor in preventing migraine attacks, especially in women aged 20-50.

Abstract
Background Severe headache or migraine is a neurological disease that seriously affects the quality of human life. Oxidative stress is considered a main factor in the pathogenesis of severe headache or migraine. The Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) is a score calculated using six dietary antioxidant components (including vitamins A, C, E, selenium, zinc, and carotenoid), which represents a person's level of dietary antioxidant ingredients. Based on the theory of oxidative stress, we speculated that CDAIs may be relevant to the risk of severe headache or migraine, as the relationship between the CDAI and severe headache or migraine is unclear. Hence, the purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the CDAI and severe headache or migraine in participants. Methods We performed a cross-sectional study using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) that were collected from 2001 to 2004. A total of 4,943 participants were included, of whom 1,232 experienced severe headaches or migraines. Participants' CDAIs were calculated based on their intake of six dietary antioxidants. We used logistic regression models, limited cubic spline analysis, and subgroup analysis to assess the association of CDAI with severe headache or migraine. Results The multivariate logistic regression model (correcting for all potential covariates) revealed that the odds ratio (95% Confidence Interval [CI]) for the association between CDAI and severe headache or migraine was 0.97 (95% CI = 0.95-1.00, p = 0.048). Compared with individuals with low CDAIs in Quartile (Q)1, the adjusted Odds Ratio between the CDAI and severe headache or migraine in Q2, Q3, and Q4 were 0.84 (95% CI = 0.69-1.01, p = 0.07), 0.77 (95% CI = 0.63-0.96, p = 0.017), and 0.73 (95% CI = 0.56-0.95, p = 0.02), respectively. Restricted cubic spline regression analysis showed an L-shaped relationship between the CDAI and severe headache or migraine. Conclusion Our findings indicate that higher CDAI was associated with a lower risk of severe headache or migraine.

Abstract
This review summarizes the relationship between diet, the gut microbiome, and migraine. Key findings reveal that certain dietary factors, such as caffeine and alcohol, can trigger migraine, while nutrients like magnesium and riboflavin may help alleviate migraine symptoms. The gut microbiome, through its influence on neuroinflammation (e.g., vagus nerve and cytokines), gut-brain signaling (e.g., gamma-aminobutyric acid), and metabolic function (e.g., short-chain fatty acids), plays a crucial role in migraine susceptibility. Migraine can also alter eating behaviors, leading to poor nutritional choices and further exacerbating the condition. Individual variability in diet and microbiome composition highlights the need for personalized dietary and prebiotic interventions. Epidemiological and clinical data support the effectiveness of tailored nutritional approaches, such as elimination diets and the inclusion of beneficial nutrients, in managing migraine. More work is needed to confirm the role of prebiotics, probiotics, and potentially fecal microbiome translation in the management of migraine. Future research should focus on large-scale studies to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of bidirectional interaction between diet and migraine and develop evidence-based clinical guidelines. Integrating dietary management, gut health optimization, and lifestyle modifications can potentially offer a holistic approach to reducing migraine frequency and severity, ultimately improving patient outcomes and quality of life.

Abstract
Purpose The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying migraine remain elusive, with oxidative stress hypothesized as a potential etiological factor. The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is a comprehensive tool for assessing the impact of diet and lifestyle on oxidative stress, thereby gauging an individual's overall antioxidant capacity. In this cross-sectional study, we explored the correlation between OBS and migraine prevalence among a cohort of US adults. Methods We analyzed data from 6195 participants aged 20 years and above, drawn from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 1999 and 2004. We employed multiple logistic regression, coupled with sensitivity analyses, to investigate the relationship between OBS and migraine. Subsequent subgroup analyses and interaction tests were performed to assess the consistency of this association across the population. Results Multiple logistic regression revealed an inverse relationship between OBS and the likelihood of experiencing migraines. Specifically, individuals in the highest OBS quartile exhibited a significantly reduced migraine risk compared to those in the lowest quartile (OR = 0.98, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0.97-0.99, P = 0.0001). Furthermore, restricted cubic spline curves indicated a non-linear association between dietary OBS and migraine incidence (non-linear P = 0.0258). Discussion Our findings suggest that adherence to an antioxidant-rich diet may be an effective strategy for mitigating migraine, potentially by influencing oxidative balance.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that B vitamins can relieve migraine. However, the association between vitamin B6 and folate, 2 important B vitamins consumed in the diet, with migraine have received minimal attention. This study explored the independent relationships between dietary vitamin B6 and folate intake with migraine and the interaction effect of these 2 nutrients on migraine in US adults. We hypothesized that vitamin B6 and folate intake would be inversely associated with migraine. This study included cross-sectional data from participants aged 20 years and older who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 to 2004. We conducted multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic spline regression to explore the association between dietary vitamin B6 and folate intake on migraine. Also, relative excess risk due to interaction, attributable proportion of interaction, and synergy index were used to assess additive interactions. A total of 7017 participants were included in this study, 1350 of whom were migraineurs. We determined that vitamin B6 and folate intake revealed a negative association with severe headache or migraine (0.66; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.47-0.89; P = .01 and 0.57; 95% CI, 0.42-0.78; P = .002]), respectively. Also, a significant interaction effect between a high mass of vitamin B6 and folate intake was observed for a lower risk of migraine (relative excess risk due to interaction, 0.28 [95% CI, 0.05-0.51]; attributable proportion of interaction: 0.45 [95% CI, 0.05-0.86]; synergy index: 0.58 [95% CI, 0.40-0.83]). A high mass of vitamin B6 and folate intake (vitamin B6 intake ≥ 2.39 mg/day and folate intake ≥ 502.01 µg/day) presented a synergistic interaction with migraine, suggesting that these 2 nutrients might be beneficial in preventing migraine.
