Abstract
The substitution of traditional packaging with bio-based edible films has emerged as a new research direction. The starch biopolymer films currently studied by researchers exhibit issues such as inadequate physical properties, barrier performance, mechanical strength, and biological activity. Consequently, a range of advanced techniques are employed to enhance the properties of biopolymer films. Low-temperature plasma stands out as an emerging multi-functional non-thermal green molecular surface modification technology that has been particularly effective in enhancing starch biopolymer films. Furthermore, owing to its non-thermal characteristics, low-temperature plasma is particularly suitable for heat-sensitive materials. Consequently, this study aims to investigate the impact of low-temperature plasma technology on enhancing the properties of biopolymer film substrates, elucidate its mechanisms of action on starch films and starch composite films, refine methods for modifying biopolymer films, and conduct a rational analysis of any contradictions.

Abstract
Nonthermal technologies, mostly utilized for microbial inactivation and quality preservation in food, are attracting increased interest, particularly in nonthermal plasma. Cold plasma (CP) demonstrates favorable results, such as increased germination, enhanced functional and rheological characteristics, and the eradication of microorganisms. Consequently, CP is a novel technology in food processing that has significantly contributed to the prevention of food spoilage. This study highlights contemporary research on CP technology in food processing. This includes its use in microbial decontamination, shelf life extension, mycotoxin degradation, enzyme inactivation, and surface modification of food products. The CP generation techniques under low pressure, including glow discharge, radio frequency and microwave techniques, and atmospheric pressure, including dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), plasma jet, and corona discharge, are discussed. Additionally, the source for the generation of plasma-activated water (PAW) with its significant role in food processing is critically discussed. The CP is an effective method for the decontamination of several food materials like fruits, vegetables, meat, and low-moisture food products. Also, the review addressed the effects of CP on the physicochemical properties of foods and CP for pretreatment in various aspects of food processing, including drying of food, extraction of bioactive compounds, and oil hydrogenation. CP improved the drying kinetics of food, resulting in reduced processing time and improved product quality. Similarly, CP is effective in maintaining food safety and quality, removing the formation of biofilm, and also in reducing protein allergenicity. The review also underscored the importance of CP as a sterilizing agent for food packaging materials, emphasizing its role in enhancing the barrier characteristics of biopolymer-based food packaging materials. Therefore, it is concluded that CP is effective in the reduction of pathogenic microorganisms from food products. Moreover, it is effective in maintaining the nutritional and sensory properties of food products. Overall, it is effective for application in all aspects of food processing. There is a critical need for ongoing research on upscaling for commercial purposes.

Abstract
The conventional food packaging is creating a significant cause of environmental hazards, posing challenges in disposal and recycling. Lignocellulose fibers possess remarkable biodegradable properties and can be modified or blended with other polymers. Thus, using lignocellulose biocomposite films derived from barley, a renewable source can mitigate and potentially transform into sustainable, innovative packaging material in the food sectors. Hence, this review focuses on barley lignocellulose fibers incorporated into different film matrix phases, showing promising enhanced mechanical, and functional properties. Barley biocomposites provide the necessary protective functions to replace traditional plastic for food packaging applications and that could reduce the negative effects on the environment. In addition, we highlighted various recently developed barley lignocellulose-based biocomposite films for a variety of food packaging applications. Furthermore, an overview of the environmental impact of plastic pollution and its effects on ecological niches has been emphasized. Additionally, aspects of different sustainable goals (SDGs 9, 12, 13) are discussed. Based on the existing research gaps, this article is concluded with the challenges and discussed further perspectives of biocomposites enriched with barley lignocellulose fibers.

Abstract
Increasing the number of resistant bacteria resistant to treatment is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. These bacteria are created in wounds and injuries and can be transferred through hospital equipment. Various attempts have been made to treat these bacteria in recent years, such as using different drugs and new sterilization methods. However, some bacteria resist drugs, and other traditional methods cannot destroy them. In the meantime, various studies have shown that cold atmospheric plasma can kill these bacteria through different mechanisms, making cold plasma a promising tool to deactivate bacteria. This new technology can be effectively used in the food industry because it has the potential to inactivate microorganisms such as spores and microbial toxins and increase the wettability and printability of polymers to pack fresh and dried food. It can also increase the shelf life of food without leaving any residue or chemical effluent. This paper investigates cold plasma's potential, advantages, and disadvantages in the food industry and sterilization.

Abstract
Using three common polymeric materials (polypropylene (PP), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polycaprolactone (PCL)), a standard oxygen-plasma treatment and atomic force microscopy (AFM), we performed a scaling analysis of the modified surfaces yielding effective Hurst exponents (H ≃ 0.77 ± 0.02 (PP), ≃0.75 ± 0.02 (PTFE), and ≃0.83 ± 0.02 (PCL)), for the one-dimensional profiles, corresponding to the transversal sections of the surface, by averaging over all possible profiles. The surface fractal dimensions are given by ds = 3 - H, corresponding to ds ≃ 2.23, 2.25, and 2.17, respectively. We present a simple method to obtain the surface area from the AFM images stored in a matrix of 512 × 512 pixels. We show that the considerable increase found in the surface areas of the treated samples w.r.t. to the non-treated ones (43% for PP, 85% for PTFE, and 25% for PCL, with errors of about 2.5% on samples of 2 µm × 2 µm) is consistent with the observed increase in the length scales of the fractal regime to determine H, typically by a factor of about 2, extending from a few to hundreds of nanometres. We stipulate that the intrinsic roughness already present in the original non-treated material surfaces may serve as 'fractal' seeds undergoing significant height fluctuations during plasma treatment, suggesting a pathway for the future development of advanced material interfaces with large surface areas at the nanoscale.

Abstract
Conventional food preservation methods such as heat treatment, irradiation, chemical treatment, refrigeration, and coating have various disadvantages, like loss of food quality, nutrition, and cost-effectiveness. Accordingly, cold plasma is one of the new technologies for food processing and has played an important role in preventing food spoilage. Specifically, in-package cold plasma has become a modern trend to decontaminate, process, and package food simultaneously. This strategy has proven successful in processing various fresh food ingredients, including spinach, fruits, vegetables, and meat. In particular, cold plasma treatment within the package reduces the risk of post-processing contamination. Cryoplasm decontamination within packaging has been reported to reduce significantly the microbial load of many foods' spoilage-causing pathogens. However, studies are needed to focus more on the effects of in-package treatments on endogenous enzyme activity, pest control, and removal of toxic pesticide residues. In this review, we comprehensively evaluated the efficacy of in-package low-temperature plasma treatment to extend the shelf life of various foods. The mechanisms by which cold plasma interacts with food were investigated, emphasizing its effects on pathogen reduction, spoilage mitigation, and surface modification. The review also critically assessed the effects of the treatments on food quality, regulatory considerations, and their potential as viable technologies to improve food safety and packaging life. In-package cold plasma treatment could revolutionize food storage when combined with other sophisticated technologies such as nanotechnology.

Abstract
Corona treatment (CT), a surface treatment widely used in the plastic industry, can be used to alter the properties of cassava starch. In the present work, CT was performed on dry granular starch (DS), water-suspended humid granular starch (HS), and gelatinized starch (GS). Different properties and structural characteristics of treated starches were studied. A lowering in pH was generally observed after CT and the rheological properties depended on the starch presentation. A reinforcement of DS and HS samples after CT was deduced from higher viscosity values in flow assays and viscoelastic moduli, but weak gels were obtained when CT was applied to GS. Changes in the A-type polymorphic structure, as well as a drop in relative crystallinity, were produced by CT for DS and HS. Additionally, changes in O-H and C-O-C FTIR bands were observed. Therefore, CT can be applied for starch modification, producing predominantly cross-linking in the DS and de-polymerization in the HS. Casting films made from the modified DS showed higher tensile strength and lower hydrophilicity, solubility, water absorption capacity, and water vapor permeability. Thus, the DS cross-linking induced by CT improved mechanical characteristics and hydrophobicity in edible films, which can be better used as packaging materials.

Abstract
In this study, thin films based on hyaluronic acid (HA) with tannic acid (TA) were investigated in three different weight ratios (80HA/20TA, 50HA/50TA, 20HA/80TA) for their application as materials for wound healing. Surface free energy, as well as their roughness, mechanical properties, water vapor permeability rate, and antioxidant activity were determined. Moreover, their compatibility with blood and osteoblast cells was investigated. The irritation effect caused by hyaluronic acid/tannic acid films was also considered with the use of are constructed human epidermis model. The irritation effect for hyaluronic acid/tannic acid films by the in vitro method was also studied. The low surface free energy, surface roughness, and antioxidant activity presented by the obtained films were examined. All the tested compositions of hyaluronic acid/tannic acid films were hemocompatible, but only films based on 50HA/50TA were fully cytocompatible. Regarding the potential implantation, all the films except 80HA/20TA showed appropriate mechanical properties. The specimens did not exert the irritation effect during the studies involving reconstructed human epidermis.

Microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals are significant pollutants in the marine environment, necessitating effective remediation strategies to prevent their release into the sea through sewage and industrial effluent. This comprehensive review explores the current understanding of the co-exposure of MPs and heavy metal-enriched MPs, highlighting the need for effective remediation methods. Various mechanisms, including surface ion complexation, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic forces, contribute to the adsorption of heavy metals onto MPs, with factors like surface area and environmental exposure duration playing crucial roles. Additionally, biofilm formation on MPs alters their chemical properties, influencing metal adsorption behaviors. Different thermodynamic models are used to explain the adsorption mechanisms of heavy metals on MPs. The adsorption process is influenced by various factors, including the morphological characteristics of MPs, their adsorption capacity, and environmental conditions. Additionally, the desorption of heavy metals from MPs has implications for their bioavailability and poses risks to marine organisms, emphasizing the importance of source reduction and remedial measures. Hybrid approaches that combine both conventional and modern technologies show promise for the efficient removal of MPs and heavy metals from marine environments. This review identifies critical gaps in existing research that should be addressed in future studies including standardized sampling methods to ensure accurate data, further investigation into the specific interactions between MPs and metals, and the development of hybrid technologies at an industrial scale. Overall, this review sheds light on the adsorption and desorption mechanisms of heavy metal-enriched MPs, underscoring the necessity of implementing effective remediation strategies.

Abstract
Hydrocolloids are important ingredients in food formulations and their modification can lead to novel ingredients with unique functionalities beyond their nutritional value. Cold plasma is a promising technology for the modification of food biopolymers due to its non-toxic and eco-friendly nature. This review discusses the recent published studies on the effects of cold plasma treatment on non-starch hydrocolloids and their derivatives. It covers the common phenomena that occur during plasma treatment, including ionization, etching effect, surface modification, and ashing effect, and how they contribute to various changes in food biopolymers. The effects of plasma treatment on important properties such as color, crystallinity, chemical structure, rheological behavior, and thermal properties of non-starch hydrocolloids and their derivatives are also discussed. In addition, this review highlights the potential of cold plasma treatment to enhance the functionality of food biopolymers and improve the quality of food products. The mechanisms underlying the effects of plasma treatment on food biopolymers, which can be useful for future research in this area, are also discussed. Overall, this review paper presents a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge in the field of cold plasma treatment of non-starch hydrocolloids and their derivatives and highlights the areas that require further investigation.

Abstract
Antimicrobial agents are safe preservatives having the ability to protect foods from microbial spoilage and extend their shelf life. Many factors, including antimicrobials' chemical features, storage environments, delivery methods, and diffusion in foods, can affect their antimicrobial activities. The physical-chemical characteristics of the food itself play an important role in determining the efficacy of antimicrobial agents in foods; however the mechanisms behind it have not been fully explored. This review provides new insights and comprehensive knowledge regarding the impacts of the food matrix, including the food components and food (micro)structures, on the activities of antimicrobial agents. Studies of the last 10 years regarding the influences of the food structure on the effects of antimicrobial agents against the microorganisms' growth were summarized. The mechanisms underpinning the loss of the antimicrobial agents' activity in foods are proposed. Finally, some strategies/technologies to improve the protection of antimicrobial agents in specific food categories are discussed.

Abstract
Cellulose is the most abundant polysaccharide on earth. It has a large number of desirable properties. Its low toxicity makes it more useful for a variety of applications. Nowadays, its composites are used in most engineering fields. Composite consists of a polymer matrix and use as a reinforcing material. By reducing the cost of traditional fibers, it has an increasing demand for environment-friendly purposes. The use of these types of composites is inherent in moisture absorption with hindered natural fibers. This determines the reduction of polymer composite material. By appropriate chemical surface treatment of cellulose composite materials, the effect could be diminished. The most modern and advanced techniques and methods for the preparation of cellulose and polymer composites are discussed here. Cellulosic composites show a reinforcing effect on the polymer matrix as pointed out by mechanical characterization. Researchers tried their hard work to study different ways of converting various agricultural by-products into useful eco-friendly polymer composites for sustainable production. Cellulose plays building blocks, that are critical for polymer products and their engineering applications. The most common method used to prepare composites is in-situ polymerization. This help to increase the yields of cellulosic composites with a significant enhancement in thermal stability and mechanical properties. Recently, cellulose composites used as enhancing the incorporation of inorganic materials in multi-functional properties. Furthermore, we have summarized in this review the potential applications of cellulose composites in different fields like packaging, aerogels, hydrogels, and fibers.

Abstract
Polylactic acid (PLA) being a renewable polyester have extensively researched in the biomedical field due to its non-toxicity, high biocompatibility, and easy processing properties. However, low functionalization ability and hydrophobicity limit its applications and hence demands physical and chemical modifications to overcome these limitations. Cold plasma treatment (CPT) is frequently used to improve the hydrophilic properties of PLA-based biomaterials. This provides an advantage to obtain a controlled drug release profile in drug delivery systems. The rapid drug release profile may be advantageous in some applications such as wound application. The main objective of this study is to determine the effects of CPT on PLA or PLA@polyethylene glycol (PLA@PEG) porous films fabricated by solution casting method for use as a drug delivery system with a rapid release profile. The physical, chemical, morphological and drug release properties of PLA and PLA@PEG films, such as surface topography, thickness, porosity, water contact angle (WCA), chemical structure, and streptomycin sulfate release properties, after CPT were systematically investigated. XRD, XPS and FTIR results showed that oxygen-containing functional groups were formed on the film surface with CPT without changing the bulk properties. Along with the changes in the surface morphology such as surface roughness and porosity, the new functional groups provide the films hydrophilic properties by reducing the water contact angle. The improved surface properties enabled the selected model drug, streptomycin sulfate, to exhibit a faster release profile with drug-released mechanism fitted by first order kinetic model. Considering all the results, the prepared films showed an enormous potential for future drug delivery applications, especially in wound application where rapid drug release profile is an advantage.

Abstract
Food loss and waste occur for many reasons, from crop processing to household leftovers. Even though some waste generation is unavoidable, a considerable amount is due to supply chain inefficiencies and damage during transport and handling. Packaging design and materials innovations represent real opportunities to reduce food waste within the supply chain. Besides, changes in people's lifestyles have increased the demand for high-quality, fresh, minimally processed, and ready-to-eat food products with extended shelf-life, that need to meet strict and constantly renewed food safety regulations. In this regard, accurate monitoring of food quality and spoilage is necessary to diminish both health hazards and food waste. Thus, this work provides an overview of the most recent advances in the investigation and development of food packaging materials and design with the aim to improve food chain sustainability. Enhanced barrier and surface properties as well as active materials for food conservation are reviewed. Likewise, the function, importance, current availability, and future trends of intelligent and smart packaging systems are presented, especially considering biobased sensor development by 3D printing technology. In addition, driving factors affecting fully biobased packaging design and materials development and production are discussed, considering byproducts and waste minimization and revalorization, recyclability, biodegradability, and other possible ends-of-life and their impact on product/package system sustainability.

Abstract
Sterilization of saffron packaging and maintaining the quality of saffron content are the main priorities in saffron preservation. Common modalities do not offer lasting saffron preservation and it is urgent to develop novel packaging approaches from renewable resources and prevent packaging waste. Here, simultaneous decontamination and quality maintenance of saffron is demonstrated, for the first time, through the synergistic application of nano-clay-loaded carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanocomposites (CNCs) and cold plasmas (CP). Compared to the separate uses of CP and CMC/PVA/nano clay, our results confirm the synergies between CP and CMC/PVA/nano clay cause complete inactivation of Escherichia coli bacteria, while not significantly affecting the concentrations of the essential saffron components (safranal, crocin, and picrocrocin). Overall, the CP-treated CMC/PVA/nano clay fosters saffron preservation, through contamination removal and quality maintenance of the food product. The synergistic application of CP and CMC/PVA/nano clay thus represents a promising strategy for packaging, sterilization, and preservation of high-value food products.

Abstract
Drying is an important and influential process to prolong the shelf-life of food in the food industry. Recent studies have shown that cold plasma (CP) as an emerging drying pretreatment technology can improve drying performance, reduce drying energy consumption, and improve dried food quality. This paper comprehensively reviewed the mechanism of CP improving drying performance, related equipment, energy consumption, influencing factors, and impact on drying quality. This review also discusses the advantages and disadvantages and proposes possible challenges and suggestions for future research. Most studies indicated that CP pretreatment could improve the drying rate and quality and reduce the drying energy consumption. CP can promote moisture diffusion and improve drying efficiency by etching the surface and affecting the internal microstructure. In addition, CP can enhance the quality of dried products by reducing drying time and enzyme activity. Further research is needed to explore the drying mechanisms and equipment innovations to promote the application of CP in the food drying industry.

Abstract
Suitable packaging material in combination with high-pressure processing (HPP) can retain nutritional and organoleptic qualities besides extending the product’s shelf life of food products. However, the selection of appropriate packaging materials suitable for HPP is tremendously important because harsh environments like high pressure and high temperature during the processing can result in deviation in the visual and functional properties of the packaging materials. Traditionally, fossil-based plastic packaging is preferred for the HPP of food products, but these materials are of serious concern to the environment. Therefore, bio-based packaging systems are proposed to be a promising alternative to fossil-based plastic packaging. Some studies have scrutinized the impact of HPP on the functional properties of biopolymer-based packaging materials. This review summarizes the HPP application on biopolymer-based film-forming solutions and pre-formed biopolymer-based films. The impact of HPP on the key packaging properties such as structural, mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties in addition to the migration of additives from the packaging material into food products were systemically analyzed. HPP can be applied either to the film-forming solution or preformed packages. Structural, mechanical, hydrophobic, barrier, and thermal characteristics of the films are enhanced when the film-forming solution is exposed to HPP overcoming the shortcomings of the native biopolymers-based film. Also, biopolymer-based packaging mostly PLA based when exposed to HPP at low temperature showed no significant deviation in packaging properties indicating the suitability of their applications. HPP may induce the migration of packaging additives and thus should be thoroughly studied. Overall, HPP can be one way to enhance the properties of biopolymer-based films and can also be used for packaging food materials intended for HPP.

Abstract
Recently, the research and innovation to produce raw materials from microbial processes has gained much attention due to their economic and environmental impacts. Lactic acid is a very important microbial product due to its wide application in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and chemical industries. In the current study, poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) was produced by the ring opening polymerization (ROP) technique of L-lactic acid recovered from whey fermentation, and was used for the production of nanocomposites films reinforced with chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs) (average diameter ca. 100–200 nm). Three different CNPs concentrations, namely 1, 3, and 5% w/w, were tested, and their influence on the physical, mechanical, thermal, antibacterial and structural attributes of PLLA film was assessed. The results showed that the addition of CNPs up to 3% caused a significant improvement in water vapor permeability, appearance, tensile strength and elongation at break. The antibacterial properties of nanocomposites followed a dose-depended pattern as a result of CNPs addition. Therefore, the best inhibitory effects on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was made by the addition of 5% of CNPs and lower dosages slightly affected the growth of pathogens or didn't cause any inhibitory effects (in 1% of CNPs). It can be concluded that the incorporation of CNPs into the PLLA matrix allows to improve the structural, thermal, physical, mechanical and antibacterial properties of the polymer, generating promising systems for food packaging and biomedical applications.

Abstract
Anthocyanins are excellent antioxidant/antimicrobial agents as well as pH-sensitive indicators that provide new prospects to foster innovative smart packaging systems due to their ability to improve food shelf life and detect physicochemical and biological changes in packaged food. Compared with anthocyanins from other natural sources, red cabbage anthocyanins (RCAs) are of great interest in food packaging because they represent an acceptable color spectrum over a broad range of pH values. The current review addressed the recent advances in the application of RCAs in smart bio-based food packaging systems and sensors. This review was prepared based on the scientific reports found on Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar from February 2000 to February 2022. The studies showed that the incorporation of RCAs in different biopolymeric films could affect their physical, mechanical, thermal, and structural properties. Moreover, the use of RCAs as colorimetric pH-responsive agents can reliably monitor the qualitative properties of the packaged food products in a real-time assessment. Therefore, the development of smart biodegradable films using RCAs is a promising approach to the prospect of food packaging.

Abstract
Plasma treatment is considered a straightforward, cost-effective, and environmental-friendly technique for surface modification of film materials. In this study, air plasma treatment was applied for performance improvement of pure PVA, cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)/PVA, and CNC/oxalic acid (OA)/PVA films. Compared with the original performance of pure PVA, the mechanical properties and water resistance of air plasma treated films were greatly improved. Among them, the CNC/OA/PVA film treated by three minutes of air plasma irradiation exhibits the most remarkable performance in mechanical properties (tensile strength: 132.7 MPa; Young’s modulus: 5379.9 MPa) and water resistance (degree of swelling: 47.5%; solubility: 6.0%). By means of various modern characterization methods, the wettability, surface chemical structure, surface roughness, and thermal stability of different films before and after air plasma treatment were further revealed. Based on the results obtained, the air plasma treatment only changed the surface chemical structure, surface roughness, and hydrophobicity, while keeping the inner structure of films intact.

Abstract
Biopolymers, like polysaccharides and proteins, are sustainable and green materials with excellent film-forming potential. Bio-based films have gained a lot of attention and are believed to be an alternative to plastics in next-generation food packaging. Compared to conventional plastics, biopolymers inherently have certain limitations like hydrophilicity, poor thermo-mechanical, and barrier properties. Therefore, the modification of biopolymers or their films provide an opportunity to develop packaging materials with desired characteristics. Among different modification approaches, the application of cold plasma has been a very efficient technology to enhance the functionality and interfacial characteristics of biopolymers. Cold plasma is biocompatible, shows uniformity in treatment, and is suitable for heat-sensitive components. This review provides information on different plasma generating equipment used for the modification of films and critically analyses the impact of cold plasma on packaging properties of films prepared from protein, polysaccharides, and their combinations. Most studies to date have shown that plasma treatment effectively enhances surface characteristics, mechanical, and thermal properties, while its impact on the improvement of barrier properties is limited. Plasma treatment increases surface roughness that enables surface adhesion, ink printability, and reduces the contact angle. Plasma-treated films loaded with antimicrobial compounds demonstrate strong antimicrobial efficacy, mainly due to the increase in their diffusion rate and the non-thermal nature of cold plasma that protects the functionality of bioactive compounds. This review also elaborates on the existing challenges and future needs. Overall, it can be concluded that the application of cold plasma is an effective strategy to modify the inherent limitations of biopolymer-based packaging materials for food packaging applications.

Abstract
Chitosan-based films are promising for consideration as packaging materials. In this study, we modified the chitosan by phenolic acid addition, such as ferulic acid, caffeic acid, tannic acid, and gallic acid. The mechanical and thermal properties were studied, and the water vapor permeability rate was determined. Moreover, the antioxidant activity and film color were considered. The results showed that phenolic acids are effective cross-linkers for chitosan. The addition of phenolic acids improved the mechanical properties and decreased the roughness of surfaces. The enthalpy value was lower for films with phenolic acids than for pure chitosan. Chitosan with ferulic acid showed the highest antioxidant activity and water permeability value. Based on the obtained results, we determined that films obtained from the chitosan/ferulic acid mixture are the most promising for use as packaging material.

Abstract
The main purpose of the current study was to propose innovative composite films based on a corn starch/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blend (starch:PVA 40:60) and loaded with 3 different levels of chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs) (1, 3, and 5% w/v) to strengthen its physical, mechanical, structural, thermal and antimicrobial attributes. The synthesized CNPs were spherical with a particle size of ca. 100 nm as demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs and dynamic light scattering tests. The results showed that the CNPs incorporation within the starch-PVA 40:60 films promoted a uniform surface without any considerable pores. These films were characterized by a homogeneous CNP distribution within the polymer matrix, causing a significant decrease in water vapor permeability (WVP) (e.g., from 0.41 for the control film to 0.28 g·mm/kPa·h·m2 for the composite film loaded with 5% CNPs). The film solubility, transparency, glass transition and melting temperatures, and elongation at break were also reduced by increasing the CNP content from 1% to 5%, while total color and tensile strength parameters increased. The antibacterial effects of CNPs were more effective against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) than Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium). It can be concluded that the addition of CNPs to the starch-PVA matrix could improve its functional and technological attributes for food packaging applications.

Abstract
Biopolymeric films manufactured from materials such as starch, cellulose, protein, chitosan, gelatin, and polyvinyl alcohol are widely applied due to their complete biodegradability. While biopolymer-based films exhibit good gas barriers and optical properties when used in packaging, poor moisture resistance and mechanical properties limit their further application. Ultrasonication is a promising, effective technology for resolving these shortcomings, with its high efficiency, environmentally friendly nature, and safety. This review briefly introduces basic ultrasonication principles and their main effects on mechanical properties, transparency, color, microstructure, water vapor permeability, and oxygen resistance. We also describe the thermal performance of biopolymeric films. While ultrasonication has many positive effects on the physicochemical properties of biopolymeric films, many factors influence their behavior during film preparation, including power density, amplitude, treatment time, frequency, and the inherent properties of the source materials. This review focuses on biopolymers as film-forming materials and comprehensively discusses the promotional effects of ultrasonication on their physicochemical properties.

Abstract
In the present study, various blended films from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and pinto bean starch (PBS) were prepared and the selected film was used to fabricate an antimicrobial packaging film. Different essential oils (EOs) were also exposed to minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) tests to find the most efficient EO against a range of microorganisms. From the primary studies, the PVA:PBS (80:20) and cinnamon essential oil (CEO) were chosen. Afterward, the blend composite film reinforced by 1, 2, and 3% CEO and several, physical, mechanical, structural, and antimicrobial attributes were scrutinized. The results showed a significant modification of the barrier and mechanical properties of the selected blended films as a result of CEO addition. Scanning electron micrographs confirmed the incorporation and distribution of CEO within the film matrix. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra indicated the interaction of CEO and the PVA-PBS composite. The antibacterial of the tested bacteria showed a significant increase by increasing the CEO concentration within the control film. CEO-loaded films were more effective in controlling Gram-positive bacteria compared to Gram-negative bacteria. It can be concluded that PVA-PBS-CEO films are promising candidates to produce biodegradable functional films for food and biomedical applications.
