Engaging Audience on Social Media: The Persuasive Impact of Fit Between Humor and Regulatory Focus in Health Messages

Drawing upon construal level theory and regulatory fit literature, this research examined the effect of fit between humor and regulatory focus on audience engagement with health information on social media. The results of two studies showed that incongruity humor (vs. aggressive humor) induced greater social proximity between the source and the viewer, and humor type interacted with regulatory focus of a message to impact audience engagement. Specifically, incongruity humor paired with a prevention-focused message (vs. a promotion-focused message) resulted in greater content endorsement and health information engagement, whereas aggressive humor combined with a promotion-focused message (vs. a prevention-focused message) led to greater content endorsement. Results further identified processing fluency as a mediator of the fit effect on audience engagement. This research offers important theoretical and practical implications for public health interventions on social media.

Use of Internet Memes in PSAs: Roles of Perceived Emotion, Involvement with Memes, and Attitudes Toward the Issuing Organization in Perceived PSA Effectiveness

To help solve the diabetes problem in Singapore, we developed humorous and fearful public service announcements (PSAs) based on popular Internet memes and investigated how the emotions derived from PSAs affect Singaporean millennials' perceptions of PSAs' effectiveness. In total, 416 people participated in the study through a Singaporean online survey company. Multivariable linear regression methods with SPSS were used to examine our hypotheses and research questions. According to the results, message manipulation significantly increased participants' perceived emotion (i.e. perceived humor and fear). Moreover, the results showed that perceived humor and fear were positively associated with perceived PSA effectiveness in both models, testing the humor effect and fear effect separately. As per the moderation analysis, the association between the perceived emotion (i.e. humor and fear) and the perceived PSA effectiveness is likely to increase when attitudes toward the organization are less positive. Moreover, the association between perceived fear and perceived PSA effectiveness is likely to increase when participants' involvement with memes is low. Our findings highlight important theoretical and practical implications for future studies investigating the effectiveness of Internet meme-based PSA messages regarding serious health issues.

Reaching Communities Through Food Allergy Advocacy, Research, and Education: A Comprehensive Analysis

This article explores the multifaceted approach of food allergy (FA) advocacy, research, and education to address the diverse challenges associated with FA, such as disparities in socioeconomic status, food security, quality of life, and the overall burden of the disease. Advocacy initiatives are instrumental in driving policy changes, raising public awareness, and directing substantial research funding, with a focus on reducing disparities. They have influenced allergen labeling regulations and improved access to epinephrine, emphasizing the importance of school-based management plans, especially in underserved communities. Research in FA informs medical practices and offers them hope for improved treatments. Recent breakthroughs in peanut allergy prevention and oral immunotherapy trials exemplify the potential for advancements while highlighting the need to address disparities in health care access. Education is a critical tool for prevention, raising awareness, and reducing the risk of allergic reactions. Efforts should be tailored to reach marginalized communities, particularly in schools where education on FA management is essential. Collaborating directly with communities is imperative to ensure inclusivity and address disparities. Barriers such as mistrust, language and cultural differences, and lack of diversity among researchers must be overcome to encourage diverse participation in research studies. This article concludes by emphasizing the significance of a comprehensive approach to FA research that prioritizes equity and inclusivity. The call to action highlights the need for global initiatives to reshape the landscape of FA care and address disparities in health care access and outcomes.

Creating persuasive health messages on social media: Effects of humor and perceived efficacy on health attitudes and intentions

This study examined how humor (incongruity humor vs. no humor) interacts with individual differences in perceived efficacy to influence health attitudes and behavioral intentions. Results of a controlled experiment (N = 294) revealed that among individuals with lower levels of perceived efficacy, incongruity humor, relative to no humor condition, resulted in greater source liking, which in turn, enhanced their attitudes and intentions to perform preventive health behaviors. However, for individuals higher in perceived efficacy, incongruity humor (vs. no humor) had an indirect negative effect on intentions via decreased attitudes. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

An online, peer-mentored food allergy education program improves children's and parents' confidence

BACKGROUND

Children with food allergy, and their families experience substantial burdens because of efforts necessary to minimize the risk of anaphylaxis. To this end, peer-to-peer education is paramount. Food Allergy Canada offers an online, peer-to-peer mentoring program. However, the impact of this program has not previously been formally evaluated.

OBJECTIVE

To determine if Allergy Pals, an online, peer-to-peer mentoring program, for children aged 7-11 years, increased child and parental food allergy competency, and confidence. Our secondary aim was to qualitatively describe the experiences of the program.

METHODS

From May 2020-May 2021, children and their parents were invited to participate in an online, anonymous survey about Allergy Pals, at pre-program, and post-program. Primary outcomes, which were described and compared using chi2 or t-tests, as appropriate for the respective variables, included food allergy competence (epinephrine carriage, signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis) and food allergy confidence (e.g. comfort asking other for food allergy-related support). Secondary outcomes included child and parent perceptions of the program, which were analysed thematically.

RESULTS

Overall, 17 children completed the pre-program, and 11 completed the post-program survey. Corresponding numbers for parents were 25 and 23. Food allergy competence was high pre-program, and remained so post-program. Food allergy confidence improved from pre-program to post-program. E.g. Children tended to feel less left out (5/12, 41.7%; 3/10; 30.0%, respectively), a finding that was reflected also in parents' scores. Themes identified for child and parent perceptions further supported improved food allergy confidence.

CONCLUSION

Although food allergy competence was high pre-program, Allergy Pals improved food allergy confidence.

The Development and Validation of the Colonoscopy Joking Scale

Joking is an important communication behavior that helps people cope with colorectal cancer and colonoscopy screening. However, whether joking serves a beneficial or maladaptive function in the context of colorectal cancer screening remains unknown. The lack of a valid scale impedes our understanding of how joking influences colonoscopy uptake. This study aims to develop and validate the Colonoscopy Joking Scale, a scale of joking behaviors in colonoscopy screening. A sample of Mturk participants aged 50-75 (N = 105) who were not compliant with colonoscopy screening recommendations was recruited to rate items for three joking factors and a measure of colonoscopy screening intentions. Two joking factors (i.e., screening-related and sexual connotation) related to colonoscopy screening and one related to general health were identified in the analysis. The psychometric analysis demonstrated strong convergent, predictive, and discriminant validity. The Colonoscopy Joking Scale will be helpful to understand what joking factor is associated with specific barriers to colonoscopy for different patients so that effective educational and interventional programs can be implemented.

Portrayals of Vaccination in Entertainment Television: A Content Analysis

Entertainment media have been found to influence viewers' health perceptions and behaviors, yet little is currently known about how vaccination, an issue that has become controversial, is being portrayed in fictional television. The present study combined constructs from the health belief model and entertainment theory to conduct a quantitative content analysis of 51 television episodes released in 2000 or after. Results indicate that vaccination is portrayed in a variety of different program types including, but not limited to, medical dramas. The tone of vaccination portrayals was mostly positive across the episodes examined. Episodes with a positive vaccination tone tended to have more information than those presenting vaccination negatively, but overall there was little information provided. Pro-vaccination characters tended to be cast as the protagonists in a main starring role, whereas anti-vaccination characters played supporting characters, typically as parents making vaccination decisions for their children. The majority of episodes featured anti-vaccination arguments, such as those perpetuating the link between vaccines and autism.

Effect of Message Format and Content on Attitude Accessibility Regarding Sexually Transmitted Infections

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are widespread in the United States among people ages 15-24 years and cost almost $16 billion yearly. It is therefore important to understand message design strategies that could help reduce these numbers. Guided by exemplification theory and the extended parallel process model (EPPM), this study examines the influence of message format and the presence versus absence of a graphic image on recipients' accessibility of STI attitudes regarding safe sex. Results of the experiment indicate a significant effect from testimonial messages on increased attitude accessibility regarding STIs compared to statistical messages. Results also indicate a conditional indirect effect of testimonial messages on STI attitude accessibility, though threat is greater when a graphic image is included. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.
