Sulfur toxicity and media capacity for H2S removal in biofilters packed with a natural or a commercial granular medium

A review on MXene and its nanocomposites for the detection of toxic inorganic gases

In the search of the viable candidate for the sensing of pollutant gases, two-dimensional (2D) material transition metal carbides (MXenes) have attracted immense attention due to their outstanding physical and chemical properties for sensing purposes. The formation of unique 2D layered structure with high conductivity, large mechanical strength, and high adsorption properties furnish their strong interactions with gaseous molecules, which holds a promising place for developing ideal gas sensing devices. This review looks at recent achievements in diversified MXenes, with a focus gaining on in-depth understanding of MXene-based materials in room temperature inorganic gas sensors through both theoretical and experimental studies. In the first part of the review, the properties and advantages of sensing material (MXene) in comparison with other 2D materials are discussed. In the second part, the unique advantages of chemiresistive based sensors and the demerits of other detection methods are summarized in detail. This section is followed by the unique structural design of MXene bases materials for improving the sensing performance towards detection of inorganic gases. The interaction between MXene and the adsorbed gases on its surface is discussed, with a possible sensing mechanism. Finally, an overview of the current progress and opportunities for the demand of MXene is emphasized and perspectives for future improvement of the design of MXene in gas sensors are highlighted. Therefore, this review highlights the opportunities and the advancement in 2D material-based gas sensors which could provide a new avenue for rapid detection of toxic gases in the environment.

Microbial monitoring and performance evaluation for H2S biological air emissions control at a wastewater lift station in South Texas, USA

A pilot-scale biological sequential treatment system consisting of a biotrickling filter and two biofilters was installed at Waste Water Lift Station # 64 in Brownsville, Texas, USA to evaluate the performance of the system being loaded with variable concentrations of wastewater hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) emissions. In this study, the effectiveness of sulfur oxidizing bacteria along with the distribution of various sulfur species and their correlation with the performance of the biofilters was evaluated. The biofilters were packed with engineered media consisting of plastic cylinders with compacted organic material which was supplied by Met-Pro Environmental Air Solutions (formerly Bio·Reaction Industries). The overall performance of the pilot-scale biological sequential treatment system with an Empty Bed Residence Time (EBRT) of 60s and the overall performance of the biofilter unit with an EBRT of 35s developed a removal efficiency of > 99% at H(2)S levels up to 500 ppm. A decrease in performance over time was observed in the first and second sections of the first biofilter unit with the third section of the biofilter unit ultimately becoming the most robust unit removing most of the pollutant. The second biofilter unit was not needed and subsequently removed from the system. The number of CFUs in sulfur oxidizing T.thioparus selective media grew significantly in all four sections of the biofilter over the two months of pilot operation of the biological unit. The sulfur oxidizer growth rates appeared to be highest at low total sulfur content and at slightly acidic pH levels. This study has implications for improving the understanding of the distribution of sulfur oxidizing bacteria throughout the length of the biofilter columns, which can be used to further optimize performance and estimate breakthrough at these very high H(2)S input loadings.

Hydrogen sulfide removal by Thiobacillus thioparus bacteria on seashell bed biofilters

The aim of this research is to achieve an efficient and cheap methods to remove H2S from the factories emissions. Four serial cylinders are designed, 40 cm in height and 15 cm in diameter each. They are filled with bivalve seashells with 63% porosity which contains Thiobacillus thioparus bacteria to the maximum height of 27.5 cm. By mixing phosphoric acid and sodium sulfide, H2S gas is released and its concentration is measured as mg m(-3) before injecting into the cylinders. A permanent measuring instrument is equipped to control the gas coming out of the cylinders. In order to prevent the outdoor environment from pollution, first the gas is sent through two activated carbon columns and then sent through a ferrous chloride scrubber. Finally it is burnt directly by flames. There were 550 sample readings in 15 weeks. The changes in the discharge of the air which carries the gas are considered between 1-12 L min(-1) and the concentration of the influent pollutant is considered between 1-140 mg m(-3). Also the humidity in the atmosphere is fixed between 77-93% and the optimum temperature required for growing of the microorganisms is retained between 20.5-30 degrees C. After feeding the system for three weeks the efficiency started to increase so that by the end of the final week of this research the efficiency reached to 90% with the discharge of 6 L min(-1) of the carrier gas. The results achieved from this research show that because of not using Filamentous bacteria, clogging did not occur in the biological system in biofilters. The amount of head loss in cylinder was only 2 mm water and during this research, head loss was the same due to unclogging of filter. On the other hand the traditional methods are expensive in terms of using chemicals, carbon recycling and using fuel and etc. Therefore researchers have started new studies in this field. The above mentioned method, according to high efficiency, inexpensiveness and easiness of control and maintenance is considered one of the best methods.

H2S degradation is reflected by both the activity and composition of the microbial community in a compost biofilter

In this study, 16S rRNA- and rDNA-based denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) were used to study the temporal and spatial evolution of the microbial communities in a compost biofilter removing H(2)S and in a control biofilter without H(2)S loading. During the first 81 days of the experiment, the H(2)S removal efficiencies always exceeded 93% at loading rates between 4.1 and 30 g m(-3) h(-1). Afterwards, the H(2)S removal efficiency decreased to values between 44 and 71%. RNA-based DGGE analysis showed that H(2)S loading to the biofilter increased the stability of the active microbial community but decreased the activity-based diversity and evenness. The most intense band in both the RNA- and DNA-based DGGE patterns of the H(2)S-degrading biofilter represented the sulfur oxidizing bacterium Thiobacillus thioparus. This suggested that T. thioparus constituted a major part of the bacterial community and was an important primary degrader in the H(2)S-degrading biofilter. The decreasing H(2)S removal efficiencies near the end of the experiment were not accompanied by a substantial change of the DGGE patterns. Therefore, the decreased H(2)S removal was probably not caused by a failing microbiology but rather by a decrease of the mass transfer of substrates after agglutination of the compost particles.
