Ecofriendly solidification of sand using microbially induced calcium phosphate precipitation

This study introduces microbiologically induced calcium phosphate precipitation (MICPP) as a novel and environmentally sustainable method of soil stabilization. Using Limosilactobacillus sp., especially NBRC 14511 and fish bone solution (FBS) extracted from Tuna fish bones, the study was aimed at testing the feasibility of calcium phosphate compounds (CPCs) deposition and sand stabilization. Dynamic changes in pH and calcium ion (Ca2+) concentration during the precipitation experiments affected the precipitation and sequential conversion of dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) to hydroxyapatite (HAp), which was confirmed by XRD and SEM analysis. Sand solidification experiments demonstrated improvements in unconfined compressive strength (UCS), especially at higher Urea/Ca2+ ratios. The UCS values obtained were 10.35 MPa at a ratio of 2.0, 3.34 MPa at a ratio of 1.0, and 0.43 MPa at a ratio of 0.5, highlighting the advantages of MICPP over traditional methods. Microstructural analysis further clarified the mineral composition, demonstrating the potential of MICPP in environmentally friendly soil engineering. The study highlights the promise of MICPP for sustainable soil stabilization, offering improved mechanical properties and reducing environmental impact, paving the way for novel geotechnical practices.

Eco-friendly soil stabilization method using fish bone as cement material

The method of soil improvement by calcium phosphate precipitation is a novel, environmentally friendly, and non-toxic technique. Such technology provides advantages over ureolytic induced calcite precipitation (UICP), the most popular and widely used method in the field of geotechnical engineering. In this paper, an investigation of the consolidation of fine and coarse sand samples by enzyme induced calcium phosphate precipitation (EICPP) was carried out. Tuna bones were used as an alternative source of calcium and phosphorus ions, as one of the most popular fish species in Japan and the main source of food industry waste. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of the samples after 21 days of daily injection of the solution showed an increase in strength up to 6,05 MPa in fine and up to 4,3 MPa in coarse sand samples. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis were performed to investigate the nature and type of deposition. Analyses confirmed that deposition is composed of brushite with needle-like crystals in the case of Toyoura sand and flower-like crystals in the case of Mikawa sand. SEM-EDS showed a presence of both, calcium, and phosphorus in the precipitate, indicating the presence of calcium phosphate compounds (CPCs). This study reveals that tuna bones are a rich source of calcium and phosphorus for EICPP, which results in a strengthening of silicate soil up to 3.4-6.05 MPa and is able to reduce ammonia emissions by 85.7 % - 97.5 % compared to UICP.

Closing the Nutrient Loop-The New Approaches to Recovering Biomass Minerals during the Biorefinery Processes

The recovery of plant mineral nutrients from the bio-based value chains is essential for a sustainable, circular bioeconomy, wherein resources are (re)used sustainably. The widest used approach is to recover plant nutrients on the last stage of biomass utilization processes-e.g., from ash, wastewater, or anaerobic digestate. The best approach is to recover mineral nutrients from the initial stages of biomass biorefinery, especially during biomass pre-treatments. Our paper aims to evaluate the nutrient recovery solutions from a trans-sectorial perspective, including biomass processing and the agricultural use of recovered nutrients. Several solutions integrated with the biomass pre-treatment stage, such as leaching/bioleaching, recovery from pre-treatment neoteric solvents, ionic liquids (ILs), and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) or integrated with hydrothermal treatments are discussed. Reducing mineral contents on silicon, phosphorus, and nitrogen biomass before the core biorefinery processes improves processability and yield and reduces corrosion and fouling effects. The recovered minerals are used as bio-based fertilizers or as silica-based plant biostimulants, with economic and environmental benefits.

Production and Evaluation of Quality Characteristics of Edible Fish Powder from Tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) and Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix)

Fish is recognised as the most nutritious animal protein source, but because of its high deterioration nature, a huge number of fish are being wasted and susceptible to nutritional losses, resulting in a significant hurdle for expanding fish production. This research aimed to lessen these losses through the use of fish powder and to enhance the nutrients in people’s diets. In order to prepare fine fish powder, a dried fish paste was milled and sieved. Proximate analysis, mineral content, and physical and microbiological qualities were determined using standard analytical procedures. The protein content of Tilapia and Silver Carp fish powder was 63.63 g/100 g and 73.58 g/100 g, respectively. An appreciable amount of potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, and zinc was also found in Tilapia and Silver Carp fish powder. The powder also holds an angle of repose of 29.4° and 26.7°, which assures a good flow property. Both Tilapia and Silver Carp fish powder have shown a near neutral pH value (6.40 and 6.32). The hedonic rating scale was used to assess the acceptability of fish powder-fortified cakes. The results showed that the cake fortified with Silver Carp fish powder outperforms the control and Tilapia fish powder sample in terms of taste, flavour, colour, texture, and overall acceptance, while the panellists also preferred the Tilapia fish powder sample. As a result of this research, a high-quality nutritious fish powder from Tilapia and Silver Carp can be prepared and adopted as a food fortifier.

Effects of Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) Bone Powder on Consumers’ Liking, Emotions, and Purchase Intent of Fried Catfish Strips

Catfish are the predominant U.S. aquacultural product. However, byproducts from filleting, including bones that are high in calcium, typically go to waste or are sold as a low-valued feed. This research evaluated the potential use of catfish bone powder (CBP; 21.07% calcium) as a food ingredient. Catfish fillet strips were dredged with a breading mix (CBPM) containing 0% (0CBPM), 10% (10CBPM), and 20% (20CBPM) CBP before frying. Consumers (N = 211) evaluated sensory liking (nine-point hedonic scale) and attribute intensity (JAR scale), emotions (check-all-that-apply), and purchase intent (PI, yes/no) of samples. Color and texture were measured instrumentally. CBP did not show any negative effects on liking scores, although crispiness was scored higher for 20CBPM (mean = 6.88) than 10CBPM (mean = 6.43). Positive emotions were most relevant to CBP-containing samples, with significantly higher rates of adventurous and understanding. Information about calcium fortification using CBP increased PI to 81.04% for the 10CBPM and 83.89% for the 20CBPM samples and showed a greater effect on Latin Americans/Hispanics than U.S. Americans. Consumers were not averse to the consumption of CBP which can contribute to sustainable nutrition through waste reduction. Successful calcium fortification of fried catfish dredged with 20% CBP did not compromise sensory liking and may be feasible in other products.
